Mayor Initiates New Era of Ethics Jay-Z’s Casino Deal

The last bill Stephanie Rawlings-Blake signed as City
Council president has become one of her first priorities as
mayor — restoring trust in city government. By introducing
what she calls “some of the most sweeping ethics legislation
in two decades,” Rawlings-Blake said taxpayers can expect
their elected officials to be held accountable. She began
the process by restructuring the city’s Ethics Board and
appointing a new inspector general.

to restoring the people’s

the mayor said. “I am very
pleased to hire Mr. [David]
McClintock as inspector
general, charged with delivering a more results-driven
approach to investigating potential fraud, waste and abuse.”
Selected after a nationwide search, McClintock began his
career as a Baltimore City police officer and later became
captain of the Maryland-National Capital Park Police, where
he gained over 20 years of law enforcement experience.
There, he served as staff attorney for the agency’s Office of
the General Counsel, commander of criminal investigations
and commander of the Office of Professional Standards. One
of his first tasks as inspector general will be prioritizing areas
where the city hopes to maximize fraud, waste and abuse
prevention.

Rangel Resigns Chairmanship Amid Controversy

Charles B. Rangel, head of the New
York Congressional delegation,
announced March 3 that he would
temporarily leave his post as
chairman of the Ways and Means
Committee.

Committee completes its work,”

Jobs Bill
Organizations Speak Out

While the Jobs Bill passed by the U.S. House on March 4
and the Senate on Feb. 24 could potentially open over 1 million
new jobs, Marc H. Morial, CEO and President of the National
Urban League, views the bill as “timid.”
“This bill simply does not go far enough,” Morial said in
a press release. “It’s a tiny step when what we need is a giant
leap.”
The Senate jobs bill is a $13 billion program – the
House version is $15 billion – that lifts social security taxes
from companies throughout the year on new employees.
Additionally, if the employees remain on payroll
for at least a year, companies will also receive a $1,000 tax
credit.
United States mayors rallied together in a bipartisan
delegation last week that urged lawmakers on Capitol Hill
to put their differences aside and quickly pass the bill, as
Elizabeth Kautz, president of the U.S. Council of Mayors,
pointed out that it is a time-sensitive matter. “These
unemployment rates will continue to plague our cities for years

While the U.S. Conference of Mayors recognizes this is
a big step in the right direction, they also inform that no one
should be under the illusion that this bill alone can address the
nation’s unemployment problem.
The National Urban League also believes that the bill won’t
solely be the nation’s savior on jobs. “Even if the bill saves or
creates the proposed 1.3 million jobs, there is still a lot more
work to be done,” Morial said in a press release.
The National Urban League devised a series of provisions to
the bill deemed as the “Six-Point Jobs Plan.”
“The central feature of [the plan] is the creation of direct
jobs, which means the Federal Government would contract
with cities, states, nonprofit organizations, community colleges
and universities to give them money to hire people that they
need to do various things,” Morial said in an interview with the
AFRO this week. “So, the first part of our plan is to create 3
million direct jobs by committing $150 billion from the unused
prompt dollars.”
Other points in the plan include giving $5 million to
summer programs for youth, increasing the loan limit in the
Small Business Administration’s Community Excess Loan
Program, and the creation of green empowerment zones, which
will prevent businesses that are in high-unemployment areas
from paying federal taxes for a three-year period.
The Urban League’s Jobs Plan was discussed in full detail
in a letter addressed to the nation’s leaders, where Morial
explained that while the pace of economic recovery will be
slow, the plan promptly addresses the urgent needs of families
nationwide.
Morial also explained additional provisions which include
expanding the Urban League’s job training program, which
trains high-school dropouts and unemployed citizens for jobs,
and expanding the number of housing counselors nationwide
to help delinquent borrowers work with their loan servicers to
secure more affordable mortgages.

Appalled at the Larry Young Morning Show
As a member of the African-American race who has resided in Baltimore for 48 years, I am
appalled at the “Larry Young Morning Show” and can’t understand how the host is allowed to
manipulate our people for so long.
It appears that 30 or so callers call to express anger and division daily. They call to
express venom toward the co-host, but when someone calls to express their concern about the
manipulative con games displayed by the host, they are banned from the program and told “it’s
not good talk radio.” What’s up?
It’s not good talk radio when we hear such comments from the host, like “milk and cookie
crowd at City Hall” or when he tries to divide our councilman, senators and delegates by
pretending to be a friend or to be concerned in order to gain information to use to divide or create
controversy.
He cares about no one but will go to any length to be recognized and brags continually about
his endeavors. He disrespects people, even his co-host.
He has the audacity to refer to his listeners as family. Is that a tactic to con and manipulate?
How long will this be allowed to continue?
We don’t need this kind of programming insulting our intelligence.
Can’t we use Black radio to inspire, inform and motivate instead of daily criticism and
allowing the egotistic, nice-nasty con artist to divide and conquer our community. How long?

When Independence is Not a Virtue
Years ago, in a fit of political stupidity, I changed my party affiliation from Democrat to
Independent, in effect, no party at all. I paid the price in Maryland as both parties, in an act of
unity, denied me the right to vote in primary elections, limiting me to general elections, only. I
started paying taxes, the responsibility of all citizens, before I was old enough to vote. No matter.
My financial contributions to the democratic system hold no power when I decided to venture
into independent territory. I hold no personal grudges against either party, I just don’t believe I
should be required to vote for a party and not a person.
Party supporters will point to their contributions to the advancement of our society as proof of
their existence. Fair enough, but, if they’re that good, why fear a minority not beholden to either
one? As the old spiritual says, “Let the work I’ve done speak for me.” If you build it, and it’s  Parenthood? Planned Parenthood receives federal dollars, and it has broken the laws on
good, they will come.
Power given is never regained. I learned my lesson after sitting out a few primaries and
returned to the fold. Then, I read about places where you have the right to vote for whomever
you want, regardless of party affiliation and they seem to do just fine. Since I can’t move on
principle, here I am and here I remain, a prisoner of party politics.
The Missionary Baptist Ministers’ Conference of D.C. and Vicinity is disheartened at the
decision released this week by Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler to recognize
same-sex marriage in Maryland.
“Of course, this is the same political bait and switch that led to the apparent legalization of
same sex marriages in the District of Columbia,” says the Rev. Patrick J. Walker, chairman of the
Task Force Against Same Sex Marriage of The Missionary Baptist Ministers’ Conference of DC
and Vicinity. “It’s like déjà vu.”
The recognition of same sex marriages performed in other states is just a catalyst to move
from acceptance to legalization. It is the hope of the Missionary Baptist Ministers’ Conference
that all citizens will join together and let their voices be heard on this generation affecting
decision. Walker says, “Recognition is the molehill that will quickly turn into a mountain. We
will stand solidly with our members who are pastors and ministers in Maryland in opposition to
this first phase of same sex legalization.”

Planned Parenthood Exposed
The Department of Health investigated a Planned Parenthood facility in Birmingham, Ala.,
and issued a report citing that Planned Parenthood, “failed to obtain parental consent for 9 of 9
minor patients in a manner that complies with state legal requirements.”
It also said, “Neither the registered nurse, the medical doctor, nor any other center staff
reported the suspected abuse or neglect [of a 13-year-old child] to the authorities as required by
law.”
This investigation was prompted by undercover work done by Lila Rose (pro-life activist) and
her team in Birmingham. Lila posed as a 14-year-old seeking an abortion and was told by clinic
workers that she could substitute someone with the same last name as hers “to sign for parental
consent instead of her parents.” When Lila told clinic workers her boyfriend was 31, she was
told that the clinic director “does sometimes bend the rules a little bit.” You can view this video

Will someone please tell me why ACORN gets de-funded by Congress but not Planned
more than one occasion. Lila Rose said, “The Health Department report documents the same
malpractice that we have found in state after state. Sexually abused minors are being neglected
by [Planned Parenthood], which puts its own ‘abortion-first mentality’ before the child’s
protection.”

Winning the Fight for Our Lives

that every one of us
understands all that is at stake
in our national health care
debate. As more and more
Americans are coming to
realize, we are in a fight for
our lives.
Last week, the ongoing
political struggle that may
well determine whether
universal health care will
ever be recognized as a
fundamental civil right once
again took center stage during
President Obama’s “Summit”
on health care reform.
As Iowa’s Democratic
Senator Tom Harkin observed:
“We don’t allow segregation
on the basis of race, gender
or disability. Now, we must
stop segregating people on the
basis of their health.”

seemingly endless debates
about improving education,
too often one key factor is
underestimated: the power of
parents.

news in Hawaii, Kenneth said,
“A tremendous 8.8-magnitude
earthquake struck Chile.”
“That’s awful,” I
responded, and went to bed
thinking no more of it —until
5:20 a.m. when my cell phone
rang and rang and rang.
“Oh, damn. Nobody calls
this time of morning unless it
is bad news.”
By the time I was fully
awake, the landline rang.
“Yes Scott, no Scott – thank
you, Scott,” Kenneth said and
promptly turned on the TV.
“We have a tsunami warning
because of the earthquake in
Chile.”
“Oh dear, I must get
Kaspar’s (the cat) carrying
case ... do we have enough
fresh water? I hate canned
foods …” I began the
emergency check list in my
head, knowing full well we
had everything. Living next
to the water demands a level
of preparedness most people
don’t have to deal with.
HoneyGirl, the dog, was

bed and Kaspar was standing

year’s health care debate
has graphically illustrated,
Democrats and Republicans
do disagree -- at least on how
to overcome this inequity.
Our policy arguments are
not about the human costs of
this health care “segregation.”
In fact, the widespread extent
of Americans’ suffering is
well-known.
For some time now, we
have understood that at least
18,000 Americans die every
year because they lack the
affordable health insurance
that could have saved their
lives. More recently, Harvard
University research has
asserted that the annual death
toll could be as high as 45,000
casualties.
If radical terrorists were
killing tens of thousands of
American every year, there
would be national outrage
and an overwhelming public
demand for the President
and the Congress to act
immediately and decisively.
Yet, the uninsured neighbors
in every community who
are perishing as the result of
callous political indifference
and delay are just as lost to
their families.
Many of their concerns
that parents are a child’s
first teacher. The meaning
of that statement extends far
beyond teaching our children
to tie their shoes and button
their coats. Research shows
that parents are one of the
most important determining
factors in children’s academic
success.
In the 1996 book Beyond
the Classroom, author
Laurence Steinberg describes
a study in which he asked
students what was the lowest
grade “they could receive
without their parents getting
angry.” Asian students said
A-. White students said
“somewhere between a B and
a C.” African American and
Latino students said C-.

of a particular group of
people at a particular time in

was not a sound to be heard.
Peering through the darkness,
the water was flat, the trees
were still and the first rays of
light crept over Haunauma
Bay. This was looking like the
twilight zone.
At 6:01 a.m., sirens
pierced the silence across
Hawaii, leading up to the
first tsunami arrival at 11:32
a.m. Saturday, and the water

Americans who are fortunate
enough to have health
insurance coverage.
A recent Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation poll
found that one out of every
four Americans is worried
that he or she will lose health
insurance coverage during
the next 12 months. They
also are worried about rising
health insurance costs and
whether an injury or serious
illness might push them into
bankruptcy.
Their fears are well-
founded. Shrinking employer-
based coverage, combined
with insurance industry efforts
to deny individual coverage
to those who are aging or
might have a “preexisting
condition,” are leaving
more and more Americans
“segregated” from health
security.
Even those who qualify
for individual coverage are
facing prohibitive costs, as
demonstrated by the 30-39
percent premium hike now
confronting the policy-holders
of Anthem Blue Cross and
Blue Shield coverage in
California.
These premium increases,
I should note, are being
particular circumstances, but
it is noteworthy that often
the academic achievement of
students, what many call the
achievement gap, follows the
same pattern – with Asian
students achieving at the
highest level, followed by
White students, followed by
African-American and Latino
students.
Patterns, however, can
be broken. No race is more
capable than another. In fact,
many scientists find even
the notion of race just that
– a notion, not a meaningful
biological difference. As an
educator for more than 40
years, I do not need science
to tell me that all children can
succeed; I see it every day.
Education is more
important now than ever.
Decades ago, someone in

It is hardly surprising,
therefore, that the same

Whether we live or die -
keep our homes or are pushed
by ill health into bankruptcy
- should not be determined
by having the wealth or
good fortune to afford the
health care. Yet, for all the
high sounding declarations
and political “spin,” this is
precisely where Democrats
and Republicans disagree.
We Democrats understand
that health care reform is
essential, demanding a
this area could graduate from
high school and get a factory
job that paid enough to buy
a home and raise a family.
That is no longer the case.
Moreover, our children are no
longer competing just against
others in the area. They are
competing against people
around the world.
To succeed in college,
careers, and life, our children
need to be well-prepared.
They need to take rigorous
courses, to push themselves
academically, and they need
to expand their horizons,
exploring interests and
developing their talents.
Unfortunately, too many of
our children are not focused
in this way; a Kaiser Family
Foundation study released last
month shows that American
children spend 53 hours per

last seven years for a true,
single-payer, national health
care system based upon
Medicare.
Yet, although we would
go further toward assuring
universal coverage, there
is little doubt that the
Democratic reform proposals
that have passed the House
and Senate would do much
to alleviate the hardships that
millions of Americans are
struggling to endure today.
In contrast to our
Democratic initiatives, those
Americans who watched or
listened to President Obama’s
“Summit” last week also
heard a scripted Republican
position that asserted a
different message.
“We can’t afford the
week using electronics (e.g.,
televisions, MP3s, computers
and cell phones).
Children model us –
when they are young and
throughout our lives. Sending
them to school is only a
start. Children do best when
they have caring, involved
parents who set high levels of
expectation.
Children know that we
care about their education
when we check their
homework, participate in
school events, communicate
with their teachers, and ask
questions about what they are
learning.
Parents make the
difference. Parents have
the power to help children
understand how education
can enrich their lives.
I challenge the parents

KW: Laz Lyles asks, what
drew you to “Brooklyn’s
Finest’s” script, especially
with the screenwriter
[Michael C. Martin] being a
first-timer?
WS: Well, it wasn’t as
much the script, as it was
working with this cast and
with Antoine Fuqua. So, I’d
have to say that the idea of
working with them motivated
me more so than the script.
KW: Why so?
WS: I wanted to work
with the ensemble of great
actors that Antoine Fuqua had
assembled. He and I had talked
about doing a film together
maybe about three or four
years prior to actually working
on this one. We were trying
to find the right project. He
was working on other things. I
was working on other things,
and was out of the country.
Then there was a window if
opportunity, and he said, “Wes,

I want you to play this.” I had
some reservations, because of
that Nino Brown reference [the
character he played in New
Jack City]. But he basically
explained to me, “that’s part
of the reason I want you to
do this. The characters have
some overtones of that old
Nino’s type of lifestyle.”
When he told me that Don
[Cheadle] would be playing
the other character, and who
else would be in the cast, I
was like, “Well, let’s do this!”
[Chuckles]
KW: Richard Gere…

WS: It’s always great
when you can work with
an ensemble of very, very
talented people. And Ellen
and I had worked on The Fan
together.
KW: Don’t you sometimes
have a clash of egos, when
you have so many stars on the
same set?
WS: I didn’t experience
that. I actually love the
ensemble environment.
That’s what I come from,
the so called “bus and truck”
repertory theater. So, you put
me in with a group of artists,
and it’s like a breakdance
battle. “Let’s go!”
KW: I know that your
family moved back to Florida
while you were attending a
prestigious acting academy
in NYC. How did you prevent
that disruption from spoiling
your dreams?
WS: After I finished high
school, the first chance I got,
I caught a Greyhound bus
back to New York where I
ended up being accepted to a
program in drama at the State
University at Purchase.
KW: Children’s book
author Irene Smalls says that

“Blade” you have handled
many different roles. She
wants to know which one is
your all-time favorite?
WS: That is.
KW: Documentary

produced it, but it still must
have been a major task.
WS: It was challenging.
It was one of our firsts, and

done before, and some of my
management at the time didn’t
approve of the idea. They
actually told me I shouldn’t

Maryland General Hospital Opens New
$57 Million Expansion

MEAC Offers ‘Big Stage’ for HBCUs

college athletes an opportunity to perform under the
national spotlight.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference basketball
championship tournament, scheduled to begin March 8, has
attracted more followers than normal this year, thanks in
large part to the outstanding play of its top-ranked team, the
Morgan State Bears. The Bears have won 23 games this season
(nine losses), and are 10-1 in the MEAC. If they win their
conference tournament, they will become the first team to win
the MEAC season and tournament title in back-to-back years
since Hampton University did so in 2001-2002.
But winning the MEACs, which has been described by
many as the “battle of the HBCUs,” isn’t the reason why
several fans are looking forward to the MEAC tournament
finals. It’s the prize offered to the MEAC champs that has most
Black college fans tuning in.
Since summer 1980, the MEAC has been classified as
a Division I conference by the National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA), and any team to win a Division I
conference tournament receives an automatic qualification
to the NCAA men’s basketball championship tournament.
Howard University became one of the first HBCUs to compete
in the NCAA tournament when they captured the MEAC
tournament title in 1981. Coppin State made NCAA history
16 years later when they claimed a first round victory as a No.
15 seed against No. 2 seed South Carolina. Hampton is the
only other MEAC representative to win a game in the NCAA
tournament when they beat No. 2 seed Iowa State in 2001.
Both victories are ranked among ESPN’s Top 10 greatest
tournament upsets in NCAA history because not many
expected such low-ranked teams to beat the more popular,
traditionally White programs in the nation. But Howard
University Sports Information Director Edward Hill Jr. said
expectations were even lower when MEAC was created 40
years ago.
“There were a lot of naysayers when Black folks decided
they were going to bring together multiple Black colleges
and universities to form a conference that would compete in
Division I of the NCAA,” said Hill, who will be inducted into
the MEAC Hall of Fame on March 6 after nearly three decades
of service. “A lot of people didn’t believe it would ever
happen; some folks didn’t think there would be an all-Black
school conference in existence, even today. But not only are
we here, our conference has also produced world class athletes
that have performed on the greatest stages of nearly every
professional sport in America. So when you think about that,
you have to be proud of how far we’ve come.”
But since the integration of collegiate athletics, a majority
of the best African-American athletes have taken scholarship
offers to traditionally White universities with well-established
athletic programs because the national stage they compete
on offers a greater chance of being recruited by the pros.
However, Coppin State Athletic Director Derrick Ramsey
said there’s still a ton of talented athletes that choose HBCUs
instead, thanks to the MEAC.
“I still remember when [Coppin State] coach Fang
[Mitchell] led our Eagles to a huge victory against South
Carolina back in 1997, and how that upset win really put
HBCU athletics back on the map,” said Ramsey, a pro football
legend who attended Kentucky University, currently one of the
top-ranked basketball programs in the country.
“[Head coach] Todd Bozeman has been doing the same
thing this year with our neighbor, Morgan State. Even if they
don’t reach the NCAA tournament, they’ve already won
enough to show the world they have one of the better programs
in the NCAA, HBCU or not.”
The Bears have climbed their way up to 20th place in the
CollegeInsider.com Top 25 Mid-Major programs rankings
because of their success against some of the tougher non-
conference opponents this season. They beat popular programs
like University of Arkansas, claiming their first win in school
history against a Southeastern Conference team (SEC), and
nearly defeated Top 25-ranked University of Louisville of the
powerhouse Big East Conference.
Those non-conference wins have helped the Bears record
three straight 20-plus-win seasons, which is a first.
“Morgan State is doing a great job of promoting our
conference by not only taking on these high-profiled non-
conference teams, but also beating them,” Hill said. “And
because we’re producing winners from our conference, we’re
putting pressure on the national media to provide consistent
coverage. We’ve had national TV coverage before, but it
would be off and on. Now, we have an excellent agreement
with ESPNU, which helps those outstanding athletes who
decided to attend an HBCU to showcase their talents
nationally, too.”

John Wall. If you only
glance at college basketball
every now and again, you
would probably assume that
Wall is the only thing flying
in the NCAA. And it’s
hard not to like Kentucky’s
Wildcat wonder. He flies
in and out the lane like a
Ferrari and jumps higher
than Super Mario.
The freshman point
guard is in the lead for
Player of the Year honors
and the top overall draft
pick, but running right
beside him in each race is
Ohio State’s Evan Turner.
While Turner, a junior,
might not have the cameras
and stage-promoting head
coach to talk him into a
household name, he has the
game of a perennial All-Star.
His statline is ridiculous: 20
points, nine rebounds, six
assists, two steals and one
block per night. Compare
that with Wall’s 17 points,
four rebounds, six assists,
two steals and half-a-block
per game and it’s not hard
to see who should win both
races.
Wall gets a lot of love
because he’s the freshest on
the scene, the newest face in
the crowd, the new kid on
the block and all those other
good analogies. But frankly,
Turner’s just better. This
past weekend’s victory over
rival Michigan truly showed
Turner’s versatility. The
6-foot-7-inch point guard/
forward’s 11 rebounds and
four blocks are numbers
you’d be lucky to get from
your average center –
professional or college– let
alone your point man. His
ability to play positions one
through three is something
only a select company
can lay brag to. Add in his
playmaking abilities –he
had 18 points and seven
assists against Michigan–
and he’s a NBA franchise
savior waiting to happen.
Several scouts compare
Wall to ex-Memphis Tigers
guard Derrick Rose. To find
Turner’s comparison in my
opinion, you might as well
stay in Memphis. Former
Tiger Penny Hardaway’s
numbers as a junior are
similar to Turner’s 23
points, 8.5 rebounds, 6.4
assists 2.4 steals and 1.2
blocks per game. Turner
may not have the flash and
splash of Hardaway, but
when Turner’s 6-foot-7-
inch frame is jogging down
the court whipping passes
behind his back, it’s hard
not to think Penny.
Turner has the
experience edge over Wall
from having played an extra
two seasons. As fantastic
as Wall has been in his
freshman year already,
there’s no telling where his
game will be in another two
years. But Turner is already
there and at only 21, he’s
still young enough to get
better.
His outside shot could
use a little work (what
college kid’s jumpshot
doesn’t), but his midrange
game is solid enough to
keep defenses from sagging
off him. He’s tall enough to
see over defenses and he’s
the humble, hardworking
kid you would want to build
your franchise around.
But Wall’s going to be
the No. 1 pick; that you
can count on. The fact that
he’s two years younger
than Turner and the talk of
college basketball world
will allow him to be a crowd
filler wherever he goes.
However, a remarkable
college season should land
Turner the Player of the
Year award and a selection
in the top three of June’s
NBA Draft.
It’s unfortunate that
Turner has to sit in the
background while Wall
gets all the publicity, but
that’s the difference when
you play for famous coach
John Calipari versus the less
known coach Thad Matta
of the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Turner may not be the
headlining name of the
NCAA but when it comes
to collegiate basketball, he
might just be the best player.

Coppin State celebrated their homecoming on Feb. 27 in a bigger way than they’ve ever done
in the past. The university invited Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown,
U.S. Congressman Elijah E. Cummings and Kweisi Mfume to celebrate the grand opening of its
new $136 million Physical Education Complex.
The PEC has been open for use since December 2009 when the Eagles played their first home
game in the 4,100-seat arena housed in the center. But the rest of the PEC remained off limit
while construction was completed. But Lt. Gov. Brown said Coppin State finally has what they
deserve.
“A top flight university like Coppin State deserves a top flight physical education facility,”
Brown said. “It’s going to attract quality athletic students. It’s also going to attract students who
are not athletes who want to be part of a university that has this kind of facility that generates a
real exciting atmosphere. So we’re excited for Dr. (Reginald) Avery [and] the students here at
Coppin State University. This is a good day for Coppin and for Maryland.”
The state-of-the-art facility houses an eight-lane Olympic style swimming pool, several
basketball courts, and a fitness center which includes racquetball courts, dance studios and
classrooms for physical education. This complex also boasts a new softball field, an outdoor
track and brand new tennis courts.
“This is a great honor not only for Coppin State University and our active students, but it’s
for our alumni, faculty, staff and also for West Baltimore,” said CSU Athletic Director Derrick
Ramsey. “This is just a tremendous day for something that has been a long time coming. I’ve
consistently found that it was a student issue, faculty issue and it was an alumni issue. So it was
something for all of us to be very proud of.”
Congressman Cummings believes the new complex will provide a sense of comfort to its
students at Coppin State.
“It’s very important because students are attracted to places where they want to feel
comfortable,” Cummings said. “They want to feel like the facilities will make them feel good
and where they can accomplish the things they want to accomplish. When you have a state of
the art facility like this one, it does just that. It gives them a great sense of self worth. When you
think about the old gym and you look at this one, there’s no comparison.”

Questions Christianity’s Path

How is it that Christianity has come to
be so closely associated with the Religious
Right and conservative political causes?
This is the fundamental question being
asked by director Dan Merchant in Lord,
Save Us from Your Followers, an alternately
humorous and sobering look at how far the
practice of Christianity has deviated from
the teachings of Jesus.
“You can tell you’ve created God in
your own image,” suggests one of his
interviewees, author/activist Anne Lamott,
“when it turns out God hates all the same
people you do.” Her tongue-in-cheek
assessment of the state of religion in the
U.S. reflects the perspective shared by
Merchant, who proves himself something of
a Michael Moore here, as he perambulates
the country, microphone in hand,
deliberately provoking outrage amid an
array of self-righteous Bible thumpers.
But his goal, ostensibly, is not to
generate controversy for controversy’s sake,
but to raise the consciousness of what he
sees as a well-meaning, if narrow-minded
Christian community. For again and again,
he asks worshippers whether their Lord and
savior Jesus Christ would be as intolerant of
gays and other groups that the Born Again
demographic seems so dead set against.
Dan thinks Christ would be appalled by
what has evolved in his name, since “We’re
raising consumers, not people committed to
the mission of God in the world.”

Windemere Long Term Care LLC is currently soliciting Contractor´s
Qualification Statements for the purpose of selecting qualified contractors
to submit bids for the construction of The GREEN HOUSE  Residences
at Stadium Place. The project will be located at 1010 East 33rd Street,
Baltimore, Maryland 21218 and consists of a 4 story 49 bed skilled
nursing facility. The project is designed to follow the trademarked model
of THE GREEN HOUSE project, serving 12 elders per floor developed
in accordance with a modified certificate of need issued by The Maryland
Health Care Commission, dated November 19, 2009. Each floor has 2
screened porches a living room, dining room, kitchen, laundry, and spa.
The building will be approximately 40,560 sq. ft and has a full basement
containing utility services, dry storage, and an office space. Landscape,
paving, and other site improvements are required as part of the scope
of work and the project will follow the requirements for LEED silver
certification.

Contractor´s Qualifications Statements, in duplicate, will be received at

Qualified bidders will need to have 1) completed construction of an I-2
building type as a Prime or General Contractor, 2) worked on a LEED
project, and 3) evidence of availability to secure a performance and
payment surety bond for the value of the construction contract. The
GREEN HOUSE  Residences at Stadium Place will use funding
provided by the City of Baltimore and the State of Maryland Capital
Grant Program and will require adherence to Maryland State wage
requirements and The City of Baltimore Minority and Women´s Business
Enterprise Program.
A Qualified Bidder´s list will be issued on Wednesday, March 10, 2010
at 2:00 p.m. when detailed specifications and bid documents may be

PURPOSE: The Maryland Environmental Service (MES) is soliciting
competitive sealed bids from qualified contractors to furnish and install
of ”Start-Stop” anti-idle control devices including monitoring equipment,
associated hardware, and materials on seven (7) locomotives located
within the Port of Baltimore in Maryland.
MBE SUBCONTRACT PARTICIPATION: This project is being funded
by American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA) through the United
States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). Bidders responding
to this solicitation are required to follow the Federal Minority Business
Enterprise (MBE) six good faith efforts (as described in MBE Attachment
A) for Minority and Women´s Business Enterprise/ (MBE/WBE) Partici-
pation. The Bidder shall include a detailed discussion of the work to be
completed by any contractor/subcontractors hired to meet the Minority
Business Enterprise (MBE) goal established for this project. The mini-
mum MBE goal established for this project is twenty-two percent (22%).
The minimum subgoals are eleven percent (11%) MBE goal, and eleven

by the Department of Transportation to certify the qualifications of engineering
firms to provide services to the Conduit Division.
The scope of services requires that interested firms have experience in utility
work with specific emphasis on electrical/telecommunication conduits, manhole
inspection, developing blow down diagram, photographing manhole conditions,
documenting conduit occupants and re-assessing manholes surveyed.
1. The consultant shall have the ability to perform manhole inspections in a
manner that will provide the following products and services to the City of
Baltimore - Conduit Division:

Inspect manholes at various times of the day to optimize production.

Develop blowdown diagrams consistent with the existing conditions found in
the field. This includes size/shape of manhole, physical measurements of duct

Obtain all required permits for work on underground utilities.

such information should be incorporated into the appropriate pages. Applications

of additional material may result in the applicant being disqualified from
