iLEAD
PROGRAM HANDBOOK

ABOUT iLEAD
iLEAD is the University of Newcastles International Leadership Experience
and Development Program. It is an exceptional opportunity for University of
Newcastle students to gain experience and skills in the areas of leadership
and international awareness.
As part of the program students will:

Attend dynamic, interactive lectures with real world take home


messages.

Hear from highly respected international figures people who are


famous in their fields of expertise, who have travelled the world,
who have led and been part of significant international events and
organisations.

Have the opportunity of taking part in countless events domestically or


around the world.

The flexible delivery allows students to design an individual path through


the program, and complete the program at an individual pace.
Program completion will be recorded on the students Australian Higher
Education Graduate Statement (AHEGS), and is a highly valuable addition to
a students resume on completion of their studies.

THE PROGRAM THEMES


Students gain leadership experience, skills and competencies under the
following themes:

Leadership in an International Context covers the fundamentals


of leadership and the skills it requires in the context of intercultural
communication and cross-cultural environments

International Awareness covers understanding and critical analysis of


global issues and the role of international frameworks

Community, Diversity and Pluralism covers the concepts of belonging


to, and playing a role in, a community; and cultural pluralism in
employment and community environments

ELIGIBILITY AND HOW TO JOIN


All students currently enrolled at the University of Newcastle are eligible
to take part in the iLEAD Program. Students need to complete the Online
Induction found on the iLEAD Website. After completing the induction
students enrol in the iLEAD Blackboard site.

iLEAD AT A GLANCE
INTERNATIONAL LEADERS SERIES (ILS)
High-profile distinguished leaders and speakers with international and
domestic experience will present on varying topics of leadership. These
events are an excellent networking opportunity and allow students to
engage with notable leaders. Students are required to attend a minimum
number of 4 ILS lectures throughout the program.

SKILL BUILDING LECTURES


Skill building lectures involve interactive and dynamic University academics
and external speakers delivering engaging hands on and practical lectures
that integrate the three iLEAD themes. Students are required to attend a
minimum number of 9 Skill Building lectures throughout the program.

ACTIVITIES

In order to complete the program, students must accrue a certain number of


points of experience through participation in a range of selected activities.
Students can only participate in a non-paid structured task with a respected
government or non-government organisation.
Examples can be found below:

Student exchange

International short courses or study tour

International internships/placements

Learning a language

Approved academic units

Serving on the executive of a club/society

Local Community project work/volunteering

THE iLEAD SHORT PROGRAM


This program is for students that are studying at the University of Newcastle
for up to a maximum of one year. This includes inbound Study Abroad
and Exchange, and postgraduate coursework students. The structure
and steps in the program are identical to the full version, however the
lecture participation and iLEAD points have been reduced. To complete the
program, students are required to attend a minimum of one International
Leadership Series (ILS) events, three skill building lectures, and acquire 50 iLEAD
points.

iLEAD POINTS TABLE


The iLEAD Points table will help you determine how many points you are entitled
to after you complete an Activity.
NOTE: Students can claim no more than 60 points for participating in the same
activity. e.g. undertaking a leadership role in an on-campus association for a
maximum of 3 years (3 x 20 points = 60 points)
TIP: Always keep a log book adding up the number of hours you are volunteering.
Then when you have completed the Activity, use the points table to work out how
many points you receive

CREATING THE iLEAD PORTFOLIO


Students are required to present a portfolio on completion of the program.
The portfolio will include:

An iLEAD checklist (see page 11)

An iLEAD Attendance and Critical Analysis Summary sheet from each of


the Skill Building Lectures and ILS events attended. (see page 12)

An iLEAD Activity Critical Analysis Summary for each Activity with a


Supervisors signature OR evidence of participation e.g. transcript,
external letter etc. (see page 13)

ATTENDING THE iLEAD


COMPLETION CEREMONY
The iLEAD Completion Ceremony will include the following:
1. Presentation of iLEAD Certificates
2. Special Awards presented to the highest achieving students.
Students will have the opportunity to complete the program at the following
levels:
