Background Statement
A recent challenge for Jenkinsons Aquarium deals with a Kemps Ridley Sea turtle
named Ace. As a reptile that lives on land and in water, Ace needs a habitat that reflects that.
Currently, her enclosure entails a water tank with sand on the bottom. This fulfils her artificial
sea, however; she needs a land habitat. Bringing Ace above the tank manually details the current
temporary solution. Ace requires an area to comfortably dock to fill her yearly desire to get out
of the water. An opportunity for students to design and build a platform for Ace presents itself.
Students will work with the aquarium to produce the best possible enclosure for the turtle.

Educating the public on marine life and conservation describes the purpose of
Jenkinsons Aquarium. Located in Point Pleasant Beach, the aquarium houses many marine
organisms. The staff takes advantage of the organisms to promote awareness of the animals, their
habitats, and conservation. Having run for almost twenty four years, the aquarium has
encountered numerous problems dealing with animal stimulant and enclosure structure.
Professional mechanical engineers, biologists, interns, and even students work to benefit the
animals of the aquarium. The people involved in the Ace project are the staff who work with her.
This includes Aquarists Angela Pizza and Evan Mooney, Curator Laura Graziano, and Assistant
Curator Katie Canady. They will oversee the project and make suggestions and corrections along
the way. The design will be formed by the students and molded by the guidance of the clients at
Jenkinsons for the user: Ace.

This product must be developed as it directly affects the well-being of a living creature
that is going extinct due to human activity. Humans are constantly using up non-renewable
resources and destroying environments. According to the Environmental Wisdom Worldview, we
share the Earth with every species and are responsible for our destruction. Ace is used to promote
this view in the aquarium and thus deserves an adequate home. The area needs to be suitable for
Ace to lay eggs as she cannot lay eggs in water. Kemps prefer to nest in dunes and can lay 110
eggs in a clutch. Ace requires a special UVB light to act as an artificial sunlight. The light does
not currently reach the bottom of the tank. A trap system would aid staff in keeping Ace safe and
out of the way during divings. Ace does not utilize the sand at the bottom of the tank the same
way as on a beach. She cannot lie in the sand and bask in the light or return to a beach to
follow normal nesting periods. Kemps nestings are particularly dramatic in that females take
over entire beaches and dig deep holes to find the best spots. The enclosure problem deals with
an endangered animal that requires precise attention. Humans must ensure the best care for all
endangered animals so they can endure and we can enjoy them.

The stakeholders in the project are the Systems II advisors, Jenkinsons aquarium staff,
and Ace. The advisors have an active interest in the completion of the project and guide the
member throughout the process. The staff is the sponsor of the project. They influence the
direction of the design and may give monetary support and materials. Ace is the product tester.
She is the one who will be using the product and either declining or accepting it. Ace has the
most control as a stakeholder.

Ace, sulking in the bottom of her tank, will be a difficult consumer to

please. (Keller, Cassy. Underwater Ace. 2015. Jenkinson's Aquarium.2015.)

The indented mood for the design is natural and clean. The product should engender
feeling of serenity and inquisition as water does. It should be fun to look at for all ages, yet not
look too childish. The design must continue the naturalistic shipwreck theme that the rest of
Jenkinsons has. Murals, driftwood, and rocks are used to achieve this theme. Cool tones of blue,
green, and sometimes yellow are incorporated into the existing designs. The product must look
realistically natural, but still maintain an effortless design to achieve the mood.

Different products do similar tasks as the desired design. The most obvious is a box turtle
dock. This device allows turtles to climb out of their tank onto a dry surface. This product lacks
the need for the all of the platform to be partially submerged. A similar product for this need is a
hot tub connected to a pool. For this kind of structure, water is always trapped in. One goes from
deeper water to a shallow, smaller tub for a different experience. Ace requires a structure that
will allow her also to go from a deep pool to a shallow one for various reasons. Sea Pools, or
open docks, share this same notion of containing and enclosed area of water with surrounding
water. To get onto the device and back into the water, a ramp or some other structure is
necessary. Amphibious navy stern ramps off of military ships operate for the same reason. For
the egg laying aspect, an ant farm displays the same elongated container of sand as the device
may. The right combination of existing ideas and innovation will create the product Ace desires.

Ace the turtle needs to get out of her tank and perform other basic needs. This includes
being under her light, laying eggs, and being separated from the rest of the tank. Ace must almost
always be partially submerged, but does not always have to be swimming. The most important
part of the design is allowing Ace a place to get UV rays from her light. The light is strong, but
cannot penetrate the saltwater down to the bottom of the tank. How many pounds the device can
hold, what level of salinity certain materials can withstand, and how much abrasive wear the
device can tolerate will be measured. This problem is important because it greatly affects an
endangered animals wellbeing whose natural habitat is being destroyed by humans. The main
concerns from the stakeholders are making sure the product does not harm any animals in the
tank or the water, can stay intact and afloat in the water, and that the product is finished in time
to slowly introduce Ace to it. Jenkinsons staff has been taking care of Ace for nine years and
has introduced many inventions created specifically for her. They know Aces needs and the
process of changing and introducing a device. The advisors know the process of designing a
system. The combined information is extremely credible.
A sloped structure that resides half in the water and retains water would remedy the
problem. Ace would be able to get off and on the device and also be put in and either closed off
or raised to trap her in. It must be under her light and able to keep eggs. This remedy would
allow Ace to get her proper nutrients from the artificial sun. It would also allow her to live a
more diverse life and have eggs. Staff would more easily get her for medical examinations and
feed her without other fish taking her food by trapping her on the structure. Aces enclosure
would be more dynamic and she would live a fuller life. The Jenkinsons staff knows to the
extent this would improve her life. An animal in captivity is still an animal just like humans are
and deserves the opportunity for a happy and healthy life.
