EXERCISES
1. Create a new library
Open EndNote: click start > all programs > EndNote > EndNote program
2. Styles
a. Selecting and viewing a style:
- Choosing Select another styles > choose ex. APA
- Select edit > Output styles > Open styles manager > Find > tick the styles to select
these styles as favourites > close the styles box
b. Editing styles
Select edit > Output styles > Open styles manager > Find the style and edit it
3. Enter a new reference
Select references > new reference > select appropriate reference type (ex. Book, journal
articles) and enter data in the library (also add file into the file attachment) > close the box
to save it
4. Sorting the references
- Click the column heading (Ex. Author)
- Select references > sort references
5. Searching the references
Select references > search references
6. Hide and show references
Select references > Show all/ selected/ hide references
7. Copy record from one library to another
Select the references (all/selected) > copy > paste to the other library
8. Create a quick list of citations
Select required references (all/ selected) > file > export > save as type: specify .rtf (rich text
format) > open file in Word then save with a .doc extension or copy the recorded data in
a.rtf then paste into file Word as needed
9. Insert references in a paper and create a bibliography (Cite while you write)
- From Word menu bar > select tools > EndNote X1 > Find citation
- Select references from .enl > insert selected references From Word menu bar
- Editing citations: Highlight the citation > edit citation > click exclude author > OK

10. Importing files to EndNote

From PubMed for use in EndNote
1. Export ALL references from your search results:

Select MEDLINE as the display from the Display drop-down menu.

Select File from the Send to drop-down menu.
Choose Save it to disk from the pop-up box and click on OK.
In the window labeled Enter name of file to save to
Choose a folder (the desktop is a good choice).
Type in a File name.
Save as type should be *.txt.
Click on Save.

2. Export selected references from your search results:

Check the box next to the references you want to save.

At the end of each page of references, select Clipboard from the Send to drop-down
menu. This will save the checked references into the PubMed clipboard.
Repeat this for each page of references until you have put all your selections into the
clipboard.
Click on the Clipboard tab.
Select MEDLINE as the display from the Display drop-down menu.
Select File from the Send to drop-down menu.
Choose Save it to disk from the pop-up box and click on OK.
In the window labeled Enter name of file to save to

Type in a File name.
Save as type should be *.txt.
Click on Save.

3. Importing Your PubMed Results into EndNote

Open or create an EndNote library.

Select File >> Import
The Import Option should be set at PubMed (NLM). If this
is not listed, in the drop-down menu, select Other filters
and then select PubMed (NLM).
Duplicates defaults to Import All. You have the option of
changing that to Discard Duplicates if you like.
Leave Text Translation as No Translation.
Click on Choose File, locate and select the .txt file you
downloaded, and click on Open.
Press Import.
