enduringimageofthePaperDolls,asseen,forexample,onBBCTelevision'sTopofthePops,was
inescapablythatofthreeyoungwomeninminiskirts,thepopularityandbrevityofwhichwereattheirheight
atthetime.Moreover,thenameofthegroupwasitselfsuggestiveof"dollybirds",aratherimpersonalterm
which,inthe1970s,journalistChristopherBookerassociatedwith"girls[being]transformedintothrowaway
plasticobjects".[2]

Followupreleases

Severalfollowups,notably"MyLife(IsInYourHands)"and"Someday",failedtochart.Theirgreatest
disappointmentcamewhentheirproducersarrangedforthemtorecordanotherMacaulaycocomposition
"BuildMeUpButtercup"laterthatyear.Duetoamisunderstandingtheyneverturnedupforthesession,and
insteadthesongwasgiventoTheFoundations,whoseversionbecameatransatlantichit.Theflipsideof
"Someday",entitled"AnyOldTime(You'reLonelyandSad)"wasalsorecordedbyTheFoundations,for
whomitchartedintheUK.
ThePaperDollsreleasedasinglealbum,PaperDollsHousein1968,whichwasreissuedwithbonustracks
onCDin2001.ThefirstreleaseincludedacoverofTheBeachBoys'song"Darlin'"thelaterversion
substitutedacoverofthePaulMcCartneysong"StepInsideLove".
In1970theysignedtoRCA.Buttwofurthersingles,acoverofTheAngels'"MyBoyfriend'sBack"andthe
originalsong"RememberDecember"(featuringbackingvocalsbyBrianConnollylaterofSweet)didnot
chart,andthetriosplitup.Thustheyremainasonehitwonders.

Afterthesplit
In1978,billedas'TigerSue',MathisreleasedasolosingleoftheJackieDeShannonpennedsong,
"WhenYouWalkintheRoom".[3]
Mathishadanothermomentofgloryin1980asvocalcoachfortheStWinifred'sSchoolChoir,whose
single"There'sNooneQuiteLikeGrandma"wasaChristmasnumberonein1980.
Mathisbecamealocalradiopresenter,appearingonPiccadillyRadioandBBCRadioManchester.
Also,Mathiswentontobecomeafundraisingcoordinatorforthe"KirstyAppeal"onbehalfofthe
FrancisHouseChildren'sHospice,inDidsbury,Manchester,andwasinvolvedwithvariousother
cancercharities.Ironically,shewasdiagnosedwithbreastcancerherself,earlyin2004.[4]
