COOLING
INTRODUCTION
The cooling system receives hot bleed air from the engines or APU
(Ref. 36-00) and supplies cooled air to the distribution system (Ref.
21-20).
DESCRIPTION
The cooling system has two bootstrap three-wheel Air Cycle Machines
(ACM) of high capacity. The pneumatic system (Ref. 36-00) supplies
the energy which the air cycle machine requires.
There are two valves in the cooling inlet to control the air pressure
and flow to the cooling packs. Two switches installed on the overhead
panel control these valves.
The figure COOLING - MAIN COMPONENT LOCATIONS shows
the location of the main components of the system.
The COOLING includes this (these) sub-subsystem(s):

COMPONENTS
COOLING PACK SYSTEM (21-51)

The cooling pack system automatically controls the temperature and

decreases the humidity of the cockpit and cabin air. It has two cooling
packs installed in the forward part of the wing-to-fuselage fairing.
OPERATION
As soon as bleed air from the engines or from the APU (Ref. 36-00) is
available, the cooling pack can start operating. When the PACK 1
switch is pushed, DC Bus 1 energizes the pack valve 1 solenoid to
supply bleed air to the left air cycle machine.
When the PACK 2 switch is pushed, DC Bus 2 energizes the pack
valve 2 solenoid to supply bleed air to the right air cycle machine.
Both pack systems (1 and 2) depend on the system condition to
operate or not.
In normal operation, they supply conditioned air to the crew and
passengers, according to the temperature (Ref. 21-60) adjusted on
the air conditioning/pneumatic panel.
The figure COOLING - PACK VALVE OPERATING LOGIC shows
the control logic.

The pack valve automatically adjusts the pressure to the air conditioning pack. There are two adjustment modes for the valve: Normal
(29.5 psig at sea level) and High (42.5 psig at sea level). These
values vary with altitude.
The adjusted bleed air flows into the cooling pack (Ref. 21-51) . There
the temperature is controlled (Ref. 21-60) and then the air flows to the
distribution ducts to supply the cockpit and the passenger cabin (Ref.
21-20). If there is a leakage in the pack ducts and the temperature
near the temperature switch increases to 91 3oC (195 5oF):
The temperature switch sends a signal to the CMC for air conditioning duct leakage indication.
The related pack valve closes.
The operation for pack valve 2 is the same but with electrical supply
from DC Bus 2.
