Title

Radiation Safety Procedure at Shop during Radiography Testing by the Third


Party Inspection (TPI) Company.

2.

Scope

This procedure covers the Radiation Safety requirements and recommendations


that are to be followed by the shop floor personnel, QC & Radiographers during
the RT Work at our PEB Premises to carry out the RT Safely.

4.1

Safety Manual of the TPI Company.

Review of Safety Manual:


QC Shall obtain & review the safety manual of the TPI Company and should forward to
the company Safety Department for their supervision & monitoring whenever deemed
necessary.

4.2

Responsibility of the QC:


4.2.1

Audit & approval of the TPI Company.

4.2.2

Ensures that the certified Radiographers crews to ASNT Level II are deployed by
the TPI Company.

4.2.3

Ensures that the Radiographers follow the Safety Manual during the RT Work.

4.2.4

Ensures that the RT Jobs are properly & safely placed by the shop on the skids.

4.2.5

Ensures that the RT is carried out only during the Night Shift and at an isolated
area where the employees and public movements are less / nil.

4.2.6

Ensures that the Radiation survey meter is calibrated and the radiographers
cordon the radiation area during RT.

4.2.7

Ensures that the Radiographers alert the surrounding by keeping the radiation
warning sign boards / signals at appropriate places (all directions).

Responsibility of the Radiographers:


4.3.1

The ASNT Level II Radiographers Crew (2 min.) shall carry out the RT safely as
per the Radiation Safety Manual of their company. The safety manual should be
available at the point of work for ready reference.

4.3.2

They should ensure that the radiation source is well secured and safe. The
following items shall be brought with them:
i)

Radiation Warning Sign Boards (both in Arabic & English) reflective in


nature.

ii)

Red or Yellow flashing warning lights.

iii)

Barrier tapes or ropes.

iv)

2 nos Calibrated Survey meters Geiger Mueller type ranging from 2


micro Sv/hr to at least 10m Sv/hr v) Blowing whistles.

v)

Radiation source carrying vehicle with radiation warning signs.

vi)

Emergency contacts.

4.3.3

Radiographers before operating the radiation source should barricade the


radiation areas with ropes or tapes to restrict access to this areas by the public
(non radiation workers). During holiday, if no workers are present then
barricade with ropes / tapes can be avoided. Shall keep all the four sides (if
required more) the radiation warning sign boards and flash lights to notify the
public that radiation work is in progress.

4.3.4

Shall conduct a dummy exposure & evaluate dose levels by using the calibrated
survey meter at the barricades and will adjust the safe distance wherever
required. That is the radiation dose level shall not exceed 2.5 micro Sv/hr. Shall
stop the work if found any of the survey meters are malfunctioning.

4.3.5

Shall not start the radiation exposure without evacuating all the people around to
safe distances or away from the radiation controlled areas.

4.3.6

At the start and end of each radiation exposure it is highly recommended to blow
the audible whistles to alert the public not to enter the restricted areas. Also, to
survey the boundaries to ensure the safe dose levels.

4.3.7

Radiographers crew shall watch the radiation areas under constant surveillance
to protect against any unauthorized or accidental entry. If any such entry
happens then the radiation source shall be retracted and no exposure shall be
made until the area is fully cleared. The ZSI QC NDT Specialist shall be notified
and if deemed necessary, it can be reported as Incident and further
investigation can be carried out.

4.4

Responsibility of the Safety Officer:


4.4.1

Upon receipt of the RT work notification from the Production / QC, the safety
officer will alert the securities of that shift to be more cautious.

4.4.2

Safety Officer will periodically monitor / audit / inspect the RT Work for the safety
procedures compliance.
