RISD,asanartisticandacademiccommunity,intendstoprovidearesidentialatmospherewhereart,design,study,andlearningcantakeplace
alongsidehealthyrecreation,relaxationandsocialdevelopment.ThisbalancedatmosphereisdependentuponthewillingnessofallRISDcommunity
memberstoassociateinsuchawaythatpersonalfreedomandresponsibilitycoexist.
Anystudentapplyingto,orhavingmovedintoaRISDresidentialfacility,acknowledgestherefore,theneedforsociallyresponsiblebehavior.They
recognizetheroleoftheResidenceLifeStaffinpromotingsuchbehaviorandwillacceptreasonabledisciplinaryactionfordisregardingsuchbehavior.
ThestudentagreestoabidebyallrulesandregulationspertainingtoResidenceLifeandDiningServicesduringtheperiodcoveredbythisagreementas
outlinedherein,andwithintheResidenceLifeHandbookavailableonlineathttp://www.risd.edu/Policies/Student_Life/.Thiscontactcoversboth
AcademicYear,andSummerSessionprograms.Certainprovisions(whereindicated)donotapplytostudentsonlylivingoncampusinthesummer.
Studentsdonotneedtosubmitasignedcopyofthisform.Theactofsubmittingahousingapplicationofanytype,ortheactofacceptingentryto

AcademicYearResidentialGuestPolicy
AtthediscretionoftheDirectorofResidenceLife,permissionmaybegrantedforestablishedDomestic/LongTermPartnersofRISDstudents,orother
individualsaffiliatedwiththeinstitution,toresideindesignatedhousingasaResidentialGuest.AResidentialGuestisdefinedasanonRISDaffiliate
withindependentaccesstoaresidencefacility.Unliketypicalguests,whoaregrantedaccesstoRISDfacilitiesthroughtheirhost,ResidentialGuests
mayholdtheirownRISDissuedkey/IDcardandmayaccessapprovedfacilitieswithoutanescort.NoRISDstudentcanbeaResidentialGuest.
CurrentlyCharlesLandingonebedroomprivateapartmentunitsaretheonlylocationswhereResidentialGuestsarepermittedtolivewithstudents.
AResidentialGuestfeeof$1000persemesterischargedtotheaccountoftheirRISDStudentpartner.StudentsmustapplytohaveaResidentialGuest
throughtheResidenceLifeOffice.ResidentialGuestswhoaregrantedpermissiontoresideinRISDhousingderivetheirrighttooccupancyfromtheir
studentpartner,andmaycontinuetoresideinRISDhousingonlyaslongastheirstudentpartnerdoesso.Furthermore,allResidentialGuestsare
subjecttothetermsandconditionsofthiscontract,andmustabidebyallrulesandregulationsthatapplytootherstudentresidentsofRISDhousing.
Permissionmaybewithdrawnatanytime.ThewithdrawalofpermissionforaResidentialGuesttoliveinRISDhousingwillnotrelievetheRISDstudent
partneroftheirresponsibilitiesunderthishousingcontract.
AcademicYearVacancyBuyoutPolicy
Ifspaceallows,residentsindoubleortripleroomswhofindthemselveswithanemptybedintheirroommaypaytoconvertthatdouble(ortriple)
roomintoasingle(ordouble)roombypayingforaVacancyBuyout.Thisisallowedonacasebycasebasiswhenadequatespaceisavailable.The
costofabuyoutisthepriceofacomparablesingleroom+2%.Forexample,asingleinanEssentialRISDroomis$7,325persemesterwithmealplan.
TobuyoutadoubleroominanEssentialRISDroomfortheacademicyear,thepricewillbe$14,943(7325x2)plus$293(14,943x.02).Theextracost
coverstheadditionalspaceandfurnitureprovidedinadoubleroomversusatypicalsingleroom.Buyoutchargesaddedmidsemesterormidyearare
proratedbaseduponthetime.Intheeventthatabuyoutspaceisneededtobeusedduetoovercrowdingorforemergencyhousing,afullrefundof
thebuyoutcostdifferencewillbeissuedfortheentiresemester.Studentsmayonlybuyoutaspaceatdefinedtimesatthebeginningorendofeach
semester,orwithin7daysofaroommatemovingout.Nobuyoutswillbeacceptedincaseswhereastudentisattemptingtomoveintoavacancyand
thebuyoutisbeingusedtoblockthatrelocation.
MedicalAccommodationPolicy
Allstudentswhohaveamedical,psychologicalordisabilityrelatedcondition(s)mayapplyforahousingaccommodation.Thesubmittedrequestand
supportingdocumentationarereviewedcarefullyonacasebycasebasisbytheMedicalAccommodationCommittee.Documentationconsistsofa
writtenevaluationbyanappropriateprofessional(notarelativeofthestudent)thatexplainsthenatureoftheconditionandwhytheconditionresults
inaneedforhousingaccommodation(s).Studentsmustcompleteallformsinentiretyandsubmitthemalongwiththenecessarydocumentationeach
academicyearbeforethedeadline,priortoroomselection,orsoonafteridentifyingtheneed(basedondateofdiagnosis,changeinstatus,etc.)tothe
ResidenceLifeOffice.Partofthecommitteesconsiderationisthewrittendocumentationbythetreatingprofessional.Afollowupconversationwith
thestudentandthetreatingprofessionalbyamemberoftheHealthServicesand/orCounselingstaffmaybenecessaryinsomeinstances.Residence
LifeandRISDcannotguaranteethatstudentswillbeprovidedtheirpreferredaccommodationchoices,butifastudentspreferredchoiceisnot
granted,thenRISDwillprovideequallyeffectivealternativessubjecttolimitationsasoutlinedintheStudentHandbookoronlineat;

EmotionalSupport,Therapy,andServiceAnimalPolicy
AllstudentslivinginCharlesLandingmayapplytohaveanapprovedanimallivewiththem,regardlessofrequestreason.Studentswithmedical
documentationsupportingtheirneedforanEmotionalSupport,Therapy,orServiceAnimalmaybeallowedtohavesuchananimalinotherRISD
HousingFacilitiesifthefollowingconditionsaremet:1)Thestudentmusthaveapprovedmedicaldocumentationsupportingboththeirneedforthe
animal,andtheirneedtoliveinalocationwhereanimalsarenottypicallypermitted,2)Theanimalandownermustcomplywiththeconditions
outlinedintheResidentialAnimalPolicy,3)Allroom/suitematesmustsignanagreementtolivewiththeanimal.NotallRISDhousingissuitableto
animalcare,andassuch,RISDreservestherighttorelocatestudentstoensurethehealthandsafetyoftheoverallresidentialcommunity,residential
animals,andowners.
OccupancyandVacancyGuidelines
1.
Ahousingapplicationoracceptedcontractdoesnotguaranteeanyspecificassignment.Assignmentswillbemadeaccordingtotheprocedures
establishedbytheOfficeofResidenceLife.Underthiscontract,studentsmayliveinanyroomtypemanagedbyRISDResidenceLife,including
roomsinCharlesLanding.
2.
StudentswishingtochangetheirroomassignmentmustobtainpriorapprovaloftheResidenceLifeoffice.TheCollegereservestherightto
reassignstudentroomsatanytimeduringtheresidenceperiodforanyreasontheCollegedeemsappropriate.Additionally,thecollegemay
utilizeanystudentroomsinanymannerdeemednecessaryasconditionswarrant,includingchangingnormaloccupancylevels.
3.
Studentswholiveinasharedroomwithoneormorevacanciesmustmaintaintheroominawaythatallowsforaroommatetomoveinatany
time.Combiningbeds;usingextradesks,dressersorclosets;removingfurniture;overdecoratingtheroom;orkeepingtheroominastateof
disorderwhichdeterspotentialroommatesisstrictlyprohibited.Moveinreadyisdefinedasastateinwhichapotentialroommatecouldbegin
movingthingsintoaroomimmediatelywithoutnecessaryrearrangementorrelocationofpersonalproperty.Forexample,ifastudentwereto
arriveinaroomtofindthesecondbeddismantledoratelevisionontheseconddesk,thiswouldnotbeconsideredmoveinready.
4.
StudentswhodonotoccupytheirassignedroomsbythefirstdayofclassandhavenotnotifiedtheResidenceLifeOfficepriortothatdayoftheir
intendedlatearrivalmaybereassignedtoadifferentspaceatthediscretionofthecollege.Sublettingofyourroomand/orlendingoutyourroom
keytoanotherstudentarenotallowed.TheUniversitymayalsoassignanewroommateatanytimeduringtheacademicyearwhenaroomhasa
vacantspace.
5.
Residencefacilitiesaretobeusedaslivingquartersandinamannerastocomplywithallfederal,stateandmunicipallawsandtherulesand
regulationsoftheCollege,mostparticularlytherulesandregulationscontainedintheResidenceLifeHandbookand,forresidentsofCharles
Landing,thoserulesandregulationsdisseminatedbytheMountVernonCompany.Residentsshallnotengageindisorderlyconduct,makeor
permitdisturbingnoises,includingwithoutlimitationtotheloudplayingofradios,televisions,stereos,ormusicalinstruments,norperformor
permitanyactsthatintheCollegesjudgmentwouldunreasonablyinterferewiththerights,comfort,orconvenienceofotherresidents.
6.
Studentswhoholdkey/cardaccessrightstoaroomareexpectedtoresideinthatroomconsistently.Studentswhoholdaroomoncampusbutdo
notactivelyresideinitforanyreasonshouldturnintheirkeyorsurrenderaccesstothatspaceiftheremainingresident(s)areuncomfortable
withthemhavingaccessbutnotlivingthereconsistently.
7.
Itemsandmaterialsprohibitedfrompossessionand/orrestrictedinuseinhousingincludebutarenotlimitedtocandlesandothersourcesof
openflame,firearms,illegalknivesorotherweapons,improperlystoredvolatilesolutions,explosives,alcohol,controlledsubstancesor
prescriptiondrugsnotaccompaniedbyaprescription,drugparaphernalia,orotherdangerousmaterials.Smokingisnotallowedinanyresidential
facility.Allanimalsareprohibitedfromresidentialfacilities,exceptasnoted.Theuseofelectricalheatingorcoolingdevicesinadditiontothose
providedwiththelivingunitorotheritemsthatviolateconditionsoutlinedinresidentialrulesandregulationsareallstrictlyprohibited.Anysuch
prohibitedanimals,materials,devicesorobjectsmaybeimpounded.FurtherclarificationoftheseprohibitionsmaybefoundintheResidenceLife
Handbookand,inaddition,forresidentsofCharlesLanding,intheMountVernonCompanyTenantHandbook.
GeneralContractTermsandConditions
1.
StudentsarerequiredtoliveoncampusforfoursemestersoruntilJuniorstatusisachieved.Studentswhoaremarried,over21yearsofageby
September1,orwholivewithaparentorguardianwithincommutingdistanceofcampusmayrequestawaiverofthisrequirement(please
contactResidenceLifefordetails).AcademicYearStudentswhoreachJuniorstatus,completetheir4semesterrequirement,ordecidetobecome
acommuterstudentmidyearremainboundtothecontractcancellationterms(asitisafullyearagreement).
2.
ResidentsofCharlesLandingremainRISDresidentialstudents;howeverthecomplexisownedandmanagedbyMountVernonCompany(MVC),
anindependententity.ResidentsofCharlesLandingwillthereforebesubjectnotonlytoRISDsstudentandresidencelifecodesofconduct,but
alsotoMVCsrulesandregulations.DaytodayfacilitiesissuessuchaslostkeysandmaintenancerequestswillbeprimarilyhandledbyMVC,not
RISD.Otherissues,includingfinancialarrangementsandobligations,shouldbereferredtoRISDsResidenceLifeOffice.Eachstudentis
responsibleforallassignedkeys.Failuretoreturnkeysorlossofsamewillresultinchargesforreplacementand/orlockchanges.Unauthorized
possession,use,loaningorduplicationofkeysisprohibited.
3.
Atanytime,theCollegemayreassignorremovefromhousingthosewhoexhibitdisregardfortheresidentialcommunity,thetermsand
conditionsofoccupancy,orotherapplicablerulesandregulations.TheCollegemayterminatethisagreementandtakepossessionoftheroomat
anytime.Anyofthestudentspossessionsremainingonthepremises48hoursaftersuchtermination,orimmediatelyfollowingtheenddateof
thisagreement,shallbedeemedabandonedandcostsincurredintheremovalofthepropertywillbechargedtothatstudent.
4.
Studentsarenotpermittedtomakeorauthorizemodificationstothebuildingsortheircontents.Roompaintingorremovalofcollegefurniture
fromtheroomisnotpermitted.Theroommustbevacatedintheconditioninwhichitwasfounduponassumingoccupancy.Studentsmustatall
timesuseinareasonablemannerandkeepincleanconditionallelectrical,plumbing,sanitary,heating,ventilation,airconditioningorother
facilities,fixtures,andappliancesintheresidentialfacilities.Norefuseofanytypeorotheritemsbelongingtothestudentwillbeallowedinthe
hallwaysorcommonareasatanytime.Studentsshalladequatelypackage,store,orcontainrefuseandregularlydisposeofitinareceptaclemade
availableateachresidentialfacility.Chargeswillbeassessedforviolationoftheseregulationsandfordamagesorvandalismtotheroom,
apartment,suiteand/orcommonareasofthebuilding,and/oroccupantsmayberequiredtoenterintoamandatorycleaningcontract.Charges
willbedividedamongallstudentssharingresponsibilityfortheapplicableroomorcommonareas(asdeterminedbyResidenceLifestaff),
wheneverindividualscausingsuchdamagesorvandalismcannotbespecificallyidentified.
5.
AlldisputesbetweenstudentsinRISDHousingwillbehandledviatheconductprocessasoutlinedintheRISDCodeofStudentConductand
Proceduresfoundathttp://www.risd.edu/Students/Policies/.Atnotimewillastudentbeforcedtorelocateorberemovedfromhousingbased
solelyonthecomplaintsofanotherstudent.Thisistoprotecttherightsofallstudents.Insituationswhereastudentsactionsmaywarrant
relocationorremovalfromhousing,thoseactionswillbereferredtotheCoordinatorofStudentConductandComplianceandhandledviathe
conductprocess.
6.
Solicitationin,orcommercialuseof,anypartoftheresidencefacilitiesorgroundsbyanypersonisstrictlyforbidden.Studentsshallnotplaceany
signs,orotheradvertisingmatteruponorinthewindows,doors,hallwaysoroutsidethebuilding.Nowindowdisplaysareallowed.
7.
TheCollegeisnotliablefordamageorlossofanystudentspersonalpropertyfromanycausewhatsoever.Studentsagreetoinsure,attheirown
expense,allpersonalpropertybroughtintoanyresidentialfacilitythroughrentersorotherinsurance.
8.
TheCollege,atitsdiscretion,mayenterandsearchyourroomanditscontents,includingpersonalpossessions,toverifyoccupancy;toperform
housekeepingandmaintenancefunctions;toinvestigateand/orfindandseizeevidenceof,potentialillegalactivityorviolationsofCollege
regulations;forhealthandfiresafetyinspections;andforanyotherreasonandinanyothersituationinwhichtheCollege,initsdiscretion,deems
itnecessarytodosoinordertoprotecttheinterestsoftheCollegeorthegeneralwelfareofoneormoreofitsstudents.
9.
Mealplanprivilegesarenontransferable.Mealhoursandfoodservicelocationsmaybeadjustedbythecollegeascircumstancesrequire.
