Why do some dry wines taste sweet?
34

Wineology
BY LEn nAPOLiTAnO
most people at around 4 grams per liter. But even at 4 grams per
liter, sweetness still may not be noticeable because acidity balances it,
making the wine taste relatively dry.
Here are examples of some popular wines with varying degrees of
sweetness:
The popular Rex Goliath Merlot, a dry wine, contains 4 grams per
liter of residual sugar.
Sweet low-alcohol Moscato, such as made by Barefoot, has
residual sugar around 64 grams per liter, while some other Moscatos
are as high as 120 grams per liter. You are not reducing calorie
consumption by choosing a low-alcohol wine with significant
residual sugar.
The classic French wine, Sauternes, viscous and elegantly sweet,
has about 150 grams per liter.
Although rare today, the worlds original great sweet wine,
Hungarian Tokaji Essencia (also spelled Tokay) has residual sugar
content between 400 and 500 grams per liter, and sometimes higher
than 800 grams!
Counteracting components like acidity can make residual sugar
an imperceptible, but significant contributor to the wines pleasing
impression on the palate. Its all about balance.

Something HUGE
has Arrived in calistoga
Founded by the owners of Knights Bridge Winery, the Huge Bear namesake comes
from an early twentieth-century newspaper article chronicling a local bear who
repeatedly surprised an early 1900s Knights Valley Justice of the Peace, in whose
home amongst others he could often be found, raiding for food. The bear was never
actually caught, giving motivation to organizers of the Bear Flag Revolt and therefore
was acknowledged on the Bear Flag of the short-lived independent Republic of
California. Today, the winery channels this story of unbridled, unstoppable selfdirection into its releases, and gives back to the community. Currently, with each
bottle sold in the Tasting Room, Huge Bear will donate back $1 to support local and
national non-profits. After each Tasting Room purchase, customers can choose to
donate this $1 per bottle to either the Calistoga Boys & Girls Club, The Napa Vine
Trail or The Bear League.

impressive Beginning
Adorned by very a whimsical, intricate label adapted from
Lynd Wards classic Caldecott Medal-winning book The Biggest
Bear. The Huge Bear Wine releases most certainly reward
second or even third looks and tastes. The winery currently
produces a half-dozen small-lot bottlings of Napa and Sonoma
County fruit including current releases of Cabernet Sauvignon,
Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Ros, Sauvignon Blanc and LateHarvest Sauvignon Blanc, and the red blend, Ursa Gigantes,
which deftly showcases its Knights Valley origins. A new Napa
Cabernet Franc is due to be released later this fall, and I am
sure more surprises await future visitors.
Given how recently the winery was founded and the
vineyard oversight taken overless than a decade at this
pointits really quite impressive to already be seeing 90+
scores from Connoisseurs Guide and Wine Enthusiast and lots
of print space dedicated to the wines in the Contra Costa
Times, Decanter, New York Magazine, and The Tasting Panel.
Visits to the tasting room also allow access to older library
bottlings of many of these releases, tooanother reason to
come on up to Calistoga. New wineries are often afraid to
showcase their history; clearly, that is not the case in many
ways with Huge Bear. They dont hide from their history but
revel in it!

locations in Napa Valley. Owned by Craig and Kathryn Walt Hall, its
vineyard collection features five Certified Organic estates producing
classic Bordeaux varietals. Each vintage, Director of Winemaking
Steve Leveque crafts 16 distinct Cabernet Sauvignon wines which
demonstrate the unique characteristics and diversity of Napa Valley.
HALLs highly rated wines include the 2008 Kathryn Hall Cabernet

WALT
WALT specializes in premier, small-lot Pinot Noir and
Chardonnay from some of the most coveted vineyards along the
Pacific Coast, Central Coast, Sonoma County and Anderson Valley in
California and Willamette Valley, Oregon. WALTs philosophy of noninterventionist winemaking allows our winemakers to create
expressive wines that reflect the signature personality of each growing
region. Owned by Kathryn Walt Hall and her husband Craig, the
winery was named to honor Kathryns parents, Bob and Dolores
Walt, who were grape growers in Mendocino County and inspired
Kathryns passion for vineyards and vine. For the wine to reflect the
vineyards terroir, WALT winemakers Steve Leveque and Megan
Gunderson combine elements of old-world winemaking style with
new age technology, letting nature take its course through the
winemaking process with as little human intervention as possible.
WALT, a sister brand to the acclaimed HALL Wines in Napa Valley,
has consistently earned praise by industry critics with over 45 wines
being rated 90 points and above. The WALT Tasting Room opened in
2011 and is located at the Sonoma Plaza in Sonoma, CA, and is open
to the public. For more information, visit www.waltwines.com or by

Passion project is a phrase you see in a lot of marketing material, but though its
nowhere mentioned in the winerys own statements, it is the best description of what has
been going on with fruit from the Pinot vineyards of Californias Anderson Valley,
Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast, guided by one mans pursuit of excellent wine
produced through a singular philosophy: My goal is to produce food friendly wines
with subtlety, elegance and finesse, all qualities I want in my life and expect to share
with my customers, says James MacPail. I like full flavors without compromising
balance. I enjoy complexity and mystery too, and I appreciate the challenges and
rewards of making natural wines.
In the mid-1990s, MacPhail began working as an old-style winemakers apprentice,
with little formal training. After working with California Pinot Noir legends Mary
Edwards and Gary Farrell, and developing a curiosity for cool climate fruit, James
launched MacPhail Family Wines in 2002. Forging partnerships with growers who share
his views of sustainability and the ability of wine to tell its story, he has gained a
reputation for crafting wines truly reflective of their place.
Absolute minimal intervention is the foundation of winemaking at MacPhail. Native
yeasts are used for primary fermentation, and secondary malolactic fermentation occurs
naturally, too, without introducing a culture. James always uses traditional methods:
pre-fermentation cold maceration, gentle punch downs by hand, barrel aging in French
oak, no fining and no filtration. MacPhail winery is equipped with small fermenting
tanks to allow James to isolate exceptional fruit and produce the range of small-batch
wines.
As one would expect given the above, the winerys emphasis is on Pinot Noir,

Gateway to napas Wine Bounty
Jamieson Ranch Vineyards is the southernmost winery in the Napa Valley, within eyeshot of
the coastline, in fact. The estates more than 300 acres of gently rolling hills and terraced
vineyards of Chardonnay, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Viognierand soon Cabernet
Sauvignonbenefit from the cooling fog and breezes from the nearby San Pablo Bay, climatic
conditions that favor the production of exceptional, balanced wines. The unique architecture of
Jamieson Ranch Vineyards is reminiscent of a timeless western mountain lodge, replete with a
long, tree-lined drive through the vines, soaring ceilings and log columns, seating around a
cozy fireplace, an observation gallery overlooking the barrel room and production area, and a
spectacular wraparound veranda with tables and couches that affords sweeping views of the
lower Napa Valley and the San Pablo Bay.
Jamieson Ranch Vineyards bottles under multiple brands and tiers, and amongst the
offerings are the Jamieson Ranch, Double Lariat, and single-vineyard Rutherford Cabs;
Merlot; Petite Sirah; Silver Spur Sauvignon Blanc; the Sweet Jane Dessert Wine; Viognier;
and Zinfandel. Equally, there are Light Horse Three County Cab, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir
while Whiplash presents a Red Blend and a Zinfandel. Lastly, the Reata tier offers Carneros and
Egan Vineyard Sonoma Coast Chardonnays, Three County and Culbertson Sonoma Coast
Pinot Noirs (the latter the personal blend of legendary jazz musician Brian Culbertson, created
in conjunction with Reata), Ros of Pinot Noir and the Aurelius White Blend.
As you can see, Jamieson Ranch Vineyards has created a plethora of wines and ways to
enjoy them, and for those who want the joy of the experience throughout the year, the Spur
Clubs make that happen with pre-release offers, winery exclusives and priority access, not to
mention discounts. Clearly, the folks at JRV have gone out of their way to make it difficult to
forget them, and why would you want to forget wines with dozens and dozens of awards, using
fruit from a spot naturally perfect for balanced wines of flavor and finesse? Do yourself a favor
the next time wine country is calling to your soul and stop at the light just eastward before the
intersection of Highways 12 and 29 for some delicious wines, fun people and amazing views

If you havent visited Italy, experience what Old World Charm means to Mario
Andretti and Joe Antonini. Mario was born in Montona, Italy and migrated to the United
States with his family. Mario and Joe founded Andretti Winery in 1995 to bring Old
World charm and Italian winemaking processes to the Napa Valley.
Its a gorgeous tasting room, and you have to respect the Andretti familys racing
legacy, said Joe, a tasting room guest from Oakland, California. The grounds remind you
of an Italian villa, relaxed but sophisticated at the same time. I was referred here by a
tasting room manager from Black Stallion and was not disappointed.
Today, guests of Andretti Winery are transported back in time as they arrive and walk
up to a beautiful Tuscan Villa nestled alongside a quiet country lane, in the heart of the
legendary Napa Valley. Sounds of Italian music fill the air and the staff ensures that every
guest is greeted with warm Italian hospitality. Wow...what a great place to visit for
tastings, said Larry K, a pleased visitor from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The wines are
varied and deliciouswith an Italian flair. The tasting area is beautiful and sun-drenched,
right next to the vines and a garden that is reminiscent of an Italian villa. The staff that
poured for us was fun and friendly. Andretti Winery is a must for our next visit to Napa
Valley.
Surrounding Andretti Winery, in the esteemed Oak Knoll region of the Napa Valley, is
the 42-acre estate vineyard, planted with Cabernet, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and
Merlot. The Oak Knoll location is a blessing as the climate is cooler than the upper
reaches of the Napa Valley, yet warmer than the Carneros region to the south, making it
especially conducive to growing diverse varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc and
Chardonnay. This unique climate, combined with quick-draining soils, yields small but
intensely flavored grapes, just the sort of fruit that produces the very best wines.

2012 Winery of the Year by Connoisseurs guide to fine wine.
SATURDAYS | 12 PM | 90 MINUTES
Expand on HALLs signature winery tour with a guided wine and food
pairing experience. Let our wine educator and house chef lead you in an
interactive discussion of the essentials of creating and enjoying pairings. Guests
are served four delecious bites paired with HALLs newly releasead wines.
Reservations required.
Founded in 1992, today Frank Family owns 380 acres of the finest vineyard land
in Napa Valley and has one of the biggest word-of-mouth followings in the wine
country. First constructed as the Larkmead Winery in 1884, the historic stone
building on the property was refinished with native sandstone from the nearby
hills in 1906. The massive stone edifice is considered one of the finest structures
in the Napa Valley; it appears on the National Register of Historical Places and is
listed as a Point of Historical Interest in the state of California.

V. Sattui Launches new Tours, Wine & Food Pairing Menu
instaSomm Tour
While it takes many years of study and
experience to become a Sommelier, youll be
one step closer after spending just 90
minutes with V. Sattui! This in-depth tour
gives guests a close up view of the different
grape varieties grown in the certified organic
Vittorios Vineyard, and what goes into
growing and harvesting those grapes at the
peak of flavor. Guests will follow the journey
of the grapes as they travel from the field to
the crush pad, to the fermenting tanks and
all the way to the bottle. Finally, they get to
experience the finished product in a seated
tasting, with a bite of house-made
charcuterie and an assortment of cheeses
from around the world.
Offered every Sunday at noon
Reservations are required
$65.00 members, $75.00 non-members
(only for guests 21 years and older)

V. Sattui Winery
V. Sattui Winery is a family-owned
property located in the heart of Napa Valley,
that was founded in 1885 and makes more
than 60 different wines with dozens of 90+
point rated wines among its current vintages.
V. Sattui wines are only sold direct to
consumer and the winery features three
beautiful tasting rooms where customers can
find and purchase their favorites. It is a
stunning, must-see Napa Valley destination
for picnics, weddings and events, offering an
impressively robust Cheese Shop with more
than 200 selections. Executive Chef Gerardo
Sainato and his staff create mouthwatering
salads, sandwiches, paninis, and entrees in
the Deli. V. Sattui also makes house-cured
meats from its own Salumeria, and gelato
and sorbetto from its own Gelateria. The
sprawling estate includes two-dozen picnic
tables nestled beneath ancient Valley Oak
trees and tri-level terraces that overlook
beautifully manicured gardens and vineyards.
V. Sattui wines are sustainably farmed

picnic from the Gourmet Marketplace in the Oak Grove with your
family and friends. It doesnt get any better than this.
TASTinG OPTiOnS
Ledson Winery and Vineyards is open daily
from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for tastings.
LEDSON WINERY
& VINEYARDS
There is not one single reason why visitors to Sonoma County want to visit Ledson
Winery & Vineyards there are many. Founded by Sonoma County native and fifthgeneration farmer and winemaker, Steve Ledson, the winery always puts its best foot
forward, providing extraordinary hospitality, an exquisite atmosphere and impeccable
wines. To get the full Ledson experience, visitors should plan to taste beautifully crafted
wines, enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch from the marketplace at the iconic Normandy Castle,
tour its exclusive mountainside vineyard retreat, and stay at Ledsons vintage-style
boutique hotel on the historic Sonoma Plaza.
In addition to the variety of wine tasting options, be sure to browse the beautifully
appointed estate and grounds, shop for luxury wine accessories, apparel and home goods
at the Gift Boutique, or savor locally grown and produced epicurean delights at the
Gourmet Marketplace and Deli. Whether picking up a taste of Sonoma to bring home, or
putting together the perfect lunch to complement Ledson wine, shoppers can choose
from a tempting selection of gourmet meats, artisan cheeses, fresh-baked breads, made-toorder sandwiches, salads, desserts and more.

Begin the tour at Quarryhill Botanical Garden with a docent-led
tour of Sonoma Valleys secret garden and explore 25 acres of 20,000
wild-origin plants and flowers. Quarryhill is a woodland garden
cradled in the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains. Winding gravel
paths pass among flowering shrubs and exotic trees, by tranquil
ponds and seasonal waterfalls, and over gently rolling hills planted
with rare and endangered species grown from seed, wild-collected in
East Asia.
12 p.m.
Continue the tour at Jack London State Historic Park. When you
visit Jack London State Historic Park you will discover what the
author of Call of the Wild packed into 40 short years. War reporter,
gold prospector, social reformer and world famous novelist, a desire
to connect with the natural world brought London to Glen Ellen
where he devoted himself to the redemption of the land. His
improvements were at the forefront of sustainable agriculture. This
portion of the tour includes a picnic lunch followed by a docent-led
tour about the farming practices of the Beauty Ranch and cottage
where he and his wife Charmian lived.
2 p.m.
Finish the tour at Benziger Family Winery. Enjoy a close-up look
at their Biodynamic vineyards, visit the fermentation facility, crush
pad and explore the barrel caves. The Biodynamic wine tour is
approximately 45 minutes, including a special tasting of the Benziger
award-winning wines.
Lunch selections are made when you reserve. Reservations can be
made online at www.jacklondonpark.com

WinESOnG 2015 Mendocinos Premier Wine and Food Event Keeps it Local
For the last 31 years, the weekend after Labor Day, wine and
food aficionados from all over the country (and even the world!)
have gathered along the stunning coast of Mendocino Country to
join together for WineSong. These welcomed visitors have
participated in overwhelmingly generous ways to support the local,
Mendocino commitment to maintain its rural hospital.
In 2015, the Mendocino Coast Hospital Foundation Board, in
tandem with local business people and long-time residents,
established an informal group to go local by taking on the work of
the auction chairs. Under the theme of My Mendo, My Hospital,
this dedicated group worked tirelessly to draw on their local,
national and worldwide resources to assemble an array of auction
lots that represent the best of Mendocino and the world beyond
all for one purpose: to create a show-stopping weekend on behalf of
the Mendocino Coast Hospital.
The fruits of their efforts this year brought to guests in part by
Celebrity Cruises will include travel packages to the French Alps,
Barbados, Italy and more. Local getaways hosted by such wineries
as Golden Eye and Handley. Among the wine packages will be a
collection of 52 Anderson Valley Sparkling Wines (one for every
week of the year!), verticals of Bordeaux, Dalle Valle Cabernet,
Chateauneuf du Pape (20 bottles), as well as an abundance of the
areas best Pinot Noir.
Beginning Friday, September 11, Winesong Weekend will kick
off with A Pinot Noir Celebration at Little River Inn produced in
partnership with Anderson Valley Winegrowers Association. On
Saturday, September 12, guests can stroll through the enchanting
Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens while enjoying a spectacular
assortment of wine and food from 100 highly acclaimed wineries
and 50 top-notch Northern California restaurants. The glorious
wine celebration continues on into the auction tents for the main
attraction: the live and silent auctions, which is the where much
needed funds are raised for the Mendocino Coast District Hospital.

GUGLIELMO WINERY
Celebrating its 90th Anniversary
Guglielmo Winery welcomes 2015 as it marks the 90th anniversary of the founding of
the Emilio Guglielmo Estate Vineyard and Winery. The Guglielmo family will commemorate
the event of their grandfather, Emilio Guglielmos, signing of the deed to the original 15 acres
of land in Morgan Hill, by hosting a black tie celebration at the winery on Saturday,
September 12. In addition prizes and special events throughout the year will be planned for
both the general public and their wine club members (Guglielmo Wine Group).
Purchased in 1925, Emilio and Emilia Guglielmo, hailing from Italys Piemonte region,
planted the seeds of a dream that still blossoms today. Grandsons George E., Gene and Gary
operate the winery facility that has grown to 82 acres upon the original estate property.
When our grandfather first purchased the property, it was only 15 acres and the house
we grew up in, said George E. Guglielmo, eldest brother and Head Winemaker. Over time
the family was able to purchase the surrounding property, add a larger winemaking facility,
tasting room and multi-purpose event center. Gene Guglielmo, Director of Sales and middle
brother continues, After his service in WWII our father, George W., joined the business,
married our mother, Madeline, and together they continued making wines and building the
business through their hard work and hospitality. Gary Guglielmo, General Manager and
youngest of the three brothers notes, Its not often that any business makes it to 90 years,
especially in the same family and at the same location. Were proud of what our family has
accomplished and want to celebrate by thanking our loyal customers and welcoming new
ones.
Visit www.guglielmowinery.com for additional information on future events, activities
