Use of Tell me More

Free mode and guided mode
The disponibility of these modes is function of the definition of the product and the corresponding pedagogical choices.
For the Immersion Pro product, only the guided mode is available.

Choice of lessons in free-to-roam mode

Utilization
Clicking on the costumes from the main menu can access the lessons. They are arranged in increasing order of
difficulty, in a clockwise direction.
Once you have selected the lesson, click on the armchair of the task bar to access the lesson main menu.
English Dvd-rom Reference 501
During the choice of lessons in free-to-roam mode, the lessons are not displayed.
Just add the following line at the end of the file "c:\tell me more nv\bin\tmm.ini":
KEYi_CourseDisplayMode=6

Dutch learning
A dozen of voices can be heard (male and female) on the 2 levels to learn dutch. Most of the female voices are of
Flamand rigin, different from the standard dutch.

Activities
Pronunciation
In the pronunciation exercises, you do not automatically go to the next word or sentence.
After a few recordings, the user must manually click on the next word or next sentence button.
The number of times one can pronounce a word depends on the importance accorded by the user to that activity.
Exercises
Saisies de caractres accentus
Un clavier spcifique est affich dans chaque exercice ncessitant de saisir des caractres accentus (cours de
Franais, Allemand, Espagnol, Italien).
Crossword puzzle
Their number is infinite. They are generated randomly from the word list of the glossary corresponding to the lesson.
The 100% threshold which appears on the progress chart is reached for 10 completed grids.
A grid is considered correct when all the letters are correct.
Note: Crossword puzzles: Translate
If the glossary is not accessible (glossary unavailable for the interface language selected, or use of the software in the
interface language identical to the learning language), the crosswords in translation mode are not accessible:
Either the column "Crossword puzzle: Translate" is greyed in the progress chart;
or, with the first versions of the software, the column "Crossword Puzzle: Translate" corresponds to the column
"Crossword puzzle: Listen and Write", and the scores are entered in this second column only.
Dictation
Some Spanish letters may be missing on the specific keyboard, that problem is very rare. To enter the characters , the
ASCII table can be used :

http://www.asciitable.com/ - section Extended ASCII Codes at teh bottom of the page.

To enter a character, the user should press the alt key and the corresponding number. example: alt-162 =

Written exercise
An error message appears when you click on solution in the written exercise.
That problem can appear randomly, on Windows 2000, with Spanish and French lessons. To decrease the frequency of
the problem, you should do the written exercise at the beginning of ork with Tell me More, or start again Tell me More
before doing the exercise.
Note specific CD_L508ins installation CD-ROM : Can happen with every language. To solve the problem, we
recommend to download the following file and run it on the computer : -> Update TMM.exe
Grammar exercise
When the Windows font size is "personalized", in some exercises of the "Businesses" levels, the words of the sentence
to be written do not fit in the allocated box.
The solution is to temporarily set the Windows font size to its initial value:
- right-click on the Windows desktop screen and choose "Properties"; or go to "Start/Settings/Control panel/Display"
- select the "Configuration" tab (Windows 95) or "Settings" (Windows 98 and later).
- under Windows 95, modify the font size (select "Small fonts")
- under Windows 98, click on the "Advanced" button and modify the font size (select "Small fonts")
- validate the various dialog boxes.
Grammar
The display of the bottom of the pages is truncated
When the Windows font size is "personalized", the texts of some pages are truncated.

- validate the various dialog boxes.
Error message when sending a message to the tutor
When a sound is being played on a grammar page and the user sends a message to the tutor, it may generate an error
message in the software.

Progress chart/Diary
Can the results of the guided and free-to-roam modes be shared?
No, they can't. Each course of the guided mode corresponds to a specific learning project. Thus its results cannot be
shared with the results of another course or the results obtained in free-to-roam mode.
Results of the progress chart
- Dialogue, all modes: with the first versions of the software, the 100% were very difficult to reach
Solution: send the latest lesson and installation CD-ROMs. In this case, to obtain the 100%, it is necessary to pass by
all the questions of the dialogue. It is thus sometimes necessary to practise the dialogue several times to obtain a
passage in all the questions by different routes.
- Crossword puzzle: 10 grids = 100%. The grids are generated randomly, their number is infinite.
Note: in immersion mode (interface language = learning language, for the first versions of the software, the column
"crossword Puzzle: Translate" does not fill, because it is transformed into " crossword Puzzle: Listen and write". In the
recent installation CD-ROMs, this column was greyed.
- Written expression: it is necessary to click on "Solution" to validate the exercise and make the corresponding result
appear in the progress chart. Clicking on "Correction" is not sufficient.
- Dictation, Grammar Practice, grammar Exercise: it is necessary to succeed in all the sentences of an exercise to have
the exercise counted as right.
Lesson report in free-to-roam mode:
1. Picture/Word association, The Right Word and Word Order exercises
The exercises are classified according to 2 different options, namely with and without speech recognition.
To complete them all and obtain a 100% score in the lesson report, you must:
- go to the option screen
- untick Speech recognition

- go back to the exercises

- complete the remaining exercises
2. Crossword puzzles
For an exercise to be validated and right, all the letters in all the words are to be found out by the user.
To obtain a 100% score in the lesson report, 10 grids have to be completed.
3. Comprehension and expression dialog.
To obtain a 100% complete score, one must go through all questions, and therefore complete the dialog several times
by taking different paths with different questions.
As for the Comprehension Dialog, tick the Comprehension button in the option screen of the dialog. It may be
completed with or without speech recognition.
The Expression Dialog may be completed after activation the vocal recognition.
Diary
Revalidating a diary which was generated previously on another date modifies the starting date, and therefore the
advancement of the progress chart. To solve the problem, you must modify the system date of the computer to set it
to the creation date of the learning program, launch the software and revalidate the diary.

Tools (Options Translations - Dictionary)

Options
In guided mode, only the non pedagogical options may be modified by the user, i.e. noise level, acceptance level.
The teaching options were set by the Auralog tutoring services for an optimal training.
In the first version of Immersion Pro product (USA), the option to slow down the speech has been disabled because of
technical reasons, and cannot be set again.
Our pedagogical team said also that it is better to remove thator pedagogical reasons, in order to listen to the original
text.
In Free-to-roam mode you can modify the options you wish in order to adjust the level of difficulty of the software to
your own level.
Traductions
The translations of the Tell me More activities are available:
For the texts:
- by clicking on the translation flag on the task bar for the dialog, the video, grammar, conjugation
Pour the words:
- by a right mouse-click, Translation menu, or through the appearance of a tool tip when pointing the word
- in some exercises, this functionality is available only at the end of an exercise, because of a choice by the pedagogical
team. The contrary would have made the exercise too easy.
- In guided mode, this display has been deactivated for some activities for pedagogical reasons, since the vocabulary of
the activity has been learned in a previous activity.
Dictionary
The dictionary is accessible through the free-to-roam mode of the program: click on Reference Works", represented by
the books on the starting page of the free-to-roam mode, then select Dictionary.
It is present only in the following language combinations:
- English into French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch.
- French into English; German into English; Spanish into English; Italian into English; Dutch into English.

Tutoring services/Internet
These functions are available only for some offers.
How does the tutoring service message system work?
The exchange of messages with the Auralog Tutor is conducted as follows:
- messages sent to the Tutor must be sent from the Tell me More program, by clicking on the write to your tutor
menu, or from the Online Services screen. This permits the Tutor to receive your message along with the tracking of
your results, as well as the context of your question. They can also visualize the activity where the question was sent
from. Having the tracking of your work permits the Tutor to differentiate between those areas where you are having
difficulties and those with which you handle with ease, in order to send you some advice corresponding to your learning
objectives.
- messages received from your Tutor arrive directly in the mailbox of your usual mail program. They consist in an
attached file with an ams extension, and content the text of your Tutors message, as well as further elements that
you activate by clicking on the Activate button at the bottom of the page. These elements can be the test results
that are displayed on your screen, or a personalised learning path that is automatically copied in the Tell me More
directory and which you will have access to for the next software use.
What is the interest in completing an evaluation test requested by the Tutor?
This test allows your Tutor to better understand your current knowledge of the language and your difficulties, in order
to send you a learning path adapted to your level and objectives.
I cannot send a message to my Tutor
First of all, we recommend that you verify the connection parameters of Tell me More, namely the SMTP address. This
address is usually given by your Internet Service Provider. If the field SMTP address is not given, you can use the
following address: smtp.auralog.com.
To connect to your tutoring services, it may be necessary to access the Internet temporarily. In fact, we have noticed
that with some providers, it is necessary to be online in order to send messages to your Tutor through TeLL me More.
If the SMTP protocol cannot be used, other protocols can be selected, from the installation CD-ROM CD_L512ins. :
Modify the following keys in the options.ini file located in the users folder ( c:\tell me more
nv\users\name_of_user00 ) :
KEYi_MailSendingMode=0

KEYb_CanChooseMailSendingMode=TRUE
I am unable to send a message to my Tutor from my computer at work
First of all, you must carry out the verification of the previous section, I am unable to send a message to my Tutor.
If this does not work, you need to ask your network administrator if you have the right to send messages through the
SMTP protocol from your computer, that there is not a specific protection (Firewalls, etc.).
The evaluation test on the club.auralog.com site cannot be carried out from a company computer.
Contact your network administrator, and ask him if there are some specific protections (Firewalls...) preventing the
execution of JavaScript code.

Sounds
The sound is set to zero when starting Tell me More
That problem can occur with some cards (SB Live and some cards from the Guillemot brand).
It is solved in most cases starting from the Installation CD-Rom reference CD_L509ins, as follows:
- double-click on the file "mixeroff.ams" (on the Installation CD-Rom, directory "Aurtech")
or
- go in the Tell me More installation directory (c:\Tell me more NV\bin)
- open the file "tmm.ini" using Notepad.
- change the value of the KEYb_UseMixerDefault=FALSE key into KEYb_UseMixerDefault=TRUE
- save the file
- check the volume control settings of the card, in particular the selection of the microphone in recording.
- Launch Tell me More.

Internal errors
General
There are 8 internal errors.
Only the errors related to the speech recognition DLL give further information on the type of error.

Internal error N 1
Clock problem
Symptom:
Can appear in the dialogue and the exercise of pronunciation. It is a very rare error. It has never been reported.
Explanation:
Too many applications use the Windows internal clock.
Solution:
Close the other applications. If it is not sufficient, restart Windows.
Internal error N 3
Problem of VIDEO PROFILING
Symptom:
This error appears only under Win3.1. It appears in the dialogue right before the broadcast of a video. It is not an
inhibiting error, but the Videos will not be broadcast.
Explanation:
It indicates that the profiling for the video was not carried out. It is not carried out from TMM because that freezes the
computer.
Solution:
open the Multimedia Player, and play a video (you may find some files in the "Business" CD-ROM, in the video
directory). It is not necessary to leave TMM to proceed to these operations.

Internal error N 2
Cause
Problem of INITIALIZATING RECO
Symptom:
Appears when starting the application or when a lesson is loading.
Solutions
The management of the speech recognition cannot be initialized for one of the reasons below.
This error can provide a further information on the encountered problem.
Error 2 + X Where X is the further information.
Possible values of X
No X : indefinite problem.
X = 1 : memory allocation problem.
X = 4 : Error due to the recognition engine; this error generally follows an error 1020.
X = 6 : Problem of initialization of the object COM (DLL LHInt not present or bad version of the technology of reco).
Can also occur when the COM libraries are not correctly installed (dcom95 or dcom98).
occurs when the installation CD-Rom is < July 2001 and the lesson CD-Rom is > July 2001. In particular for many
people who took part in the "1=2" promotion in France.
Occurs when TMM was installed in a directory whose name could not be read by the recognition: example installation
directory with non European characters (like Japanese, Turkish, Greek,.).
Under Windows nt/2000, give total control to all the users for the key "hkey_local_machine\software_auralog" using
"regedt32"
X = 8 : Problem loading the ASR DLL (asr32313.dll or asrapi.dll) or file does not exist "asrapi.ini" or is corrupted. Or-in
the case of the latest speech recognition technology of L&H, LH3nt.dll --- problem decompressing a RES file when
opening a lesson (cf 12).
TMM Pro: with the first installation CD-Rom (CD_P501ins), occurs when the local copy of the units is selected in the
options of the Administration tools, and no unit of the language has been previously loaded on the computer. - >
deselect this option or send the latest installation CD-ROM.
TMM Pro: random - > indicates data access problems, network flow or speed of the hard disks of the waiter.
X = 10 : The speech recognition technology is not adapted to the cours.al.
X = 11 : Error while reading the TMM ini files.
X = 12 : Problem while decompressing asr32(_16).res or bad file CRC. Among the possible causes:
No rights to write in the installation directory of TMM. In particular under NT, if the administrator installs TMM, a
lambda user obtains this message if it does not have the appropriate rights.
Solution: give the appropriate rights to the user: total control on the installation directory of TMM on his computer.
and Under Windows NT, give total control to all the users using "regedt32" for the key "hkey_local_machine \
software \ auralog"
other: RES file does not exist (installation problem). Or File is corrupted (installation problem).

Internal error N4
Problem accessing the course
If the error appears only for the dialogue activity
the following file should be deleted :
C:\TELL ME MORE NV\Users\user_name00\script.aur
General public. e-learning
problem reading the lesson CD-Rom
in guided mode, the courses corresponding to the lesson selected by the user are not available.
Example: in general public, the user has several levels. He already worked on level 1. He inserts Cd level 2, but selects
a course in guided mode corresponding to the courses of level 1.
for Tell me More Pro
If the user does not belong to a linguistic group corresponding to the learning languages present on the network
example: Only an American tutor (language suggested by default in French interface) and an American linguistic group
are created. However British English lessons are installed on the network. The student then obtains errors when
starting TMM, in particular an internal error n4. And the access to free-to-roam mode is possible, but all the activities
are greyed.

(version of installation Cd > 01/01/2001)

Other
Problem of UNDO
The error appears during a change of screen. Problem during creation, initialization of a screen. The cause will depend
on the screen which one wanted to load. Ask the developers...
If not, but very rare, problem reading or writing in a file UNDO. * (backup file of "the screens" during navigation in
TMM). The file is corrupted... (by restarting TMM, there should not be any more errors).
Can occur in specific configurations: use of the same TMM.exe on the network, use of computers which do not have
any Windows operating systems, but only screens and keyboard.

Internal error N5
Cause
Problem with the tracking file
Symptom:
Appears with the launching of TMM while entering the first page.
Significance:
Impossible to write in the tracking file and information for the lesson report (course.fup for version < 4.01.11,
course.tmp for the versions > = 4.01.11).
Or the disk space is insufficient.
Solution
For Tell me More Pro, use a different loggin name on all the workstations.
If it is the case, some files may still be open after a problem of the student's computer. It is necessary in this case to
restart the student's station and the server at the same time. If this kind of error occurs frequently, it is then necessary
to determine the cause of the problems.
((If it is not solved, remove the file course.fup corresponding to the corrupted tracking file.))

Internal error N6
Rare FILE ALREADY OPEN
Symptom:
Appears when starting TMM, while entering the first page.
Explanation:
The file course.fup (temporary tracking file and information for the lesson report) is probably already opened by
somebody, the two users have the same tracking folder and they used the same student name or they re-entered
without any name ("default" folder).
Solution:
Use different names.

Internal error 1020

Problem when calling functions of speech recognition.
