determine the bearing capacity in a given soil sample.

describe the procedure in performing the bearing capacity analysis
3. Discussion:

Terzaghis bearing capacity theory

Shear stresses based on Terzaghis soil bearing capacity theory

Based on Terzaghis bearing capacity theory, column load P is resisted by shear stresses at edges of
three zones under the footing and the overburden pressure, (q=D) above the footing. The first term
in the equation is related to cohesion of the soil. The second term is related to the depth of the footing and
overburden pressure. The third term is related to the width of the footing and the length of shear stress
area. The bearing capacity factors, Nc, Nq, N, are function of internal friction angle, .

1. Data and results in Direct Shear Test and Moisture Content Determination
2. Final plan and schedule of 5-Storey Apartment Building.
5. Procedure:

1. Compute the bearing capacity. Use the equation 2 of Terzaghi since the footings of the building
are square footings.
Qu=1.3 cN c + D N q +0.4 B N y

2. Compute the loads induced by each square footings to the soil.

3. Tabulate the computed data in bearing capacity and the maximum loads induced by footings to the
soil.
4. The ultimate bearing capacity of soil should be greater than the maximum loads induced by the
footings to the soil. Indicate if the soil can carry the footings.

7. Conclusion
Through the use of Terizaghis equations, we concluded that the soil we have tested is not capable to support the
footings of a 5-Storey Apartment Building. The maximum loads induced by the footings to the soil are greater than
the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil.
It is recommended that soil embankment is needed in this soil type to support the entire building.
