From the
This Thursday, September 17, is Constitution Day, in commemoration
the signing of the U.S. Constitution 226 years ago. In honor of this
anniversary, Clemson will be holding a symposium on "Citizenship
and the Constitution." We hope you'll join us!
The Fourteenth Amendment grants citizenship to all persons "born or
naturalized in the United States." This idea of "birthright citizenship"
has helped America assimilate millions of immigrants from across the
globe, but it has also generated controversy. As Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump recently declared, the U.S. is "the only
place just about thats stupid enough to" grant citizenship to everyone born here.
On Thursday, I'll be joined in a discussion of citizenship by my colleagues Dr. Vernon Burton of the History Department and Dr. Elizabeth Jemison of the Religion Department. The symposium will be held
from 5:00-6:15pm in Room 118 of the Academic Success Center.
See you there!
