Standard Drink:

Keeping track of what or how much u drink. Cant eyeball them.


Need Standard Drink Measurement.
Why? If you drink more than u plan, u can end up in danger.
o Watch it being poured. Watch bartender
o If at party, make it yourself. Know what and how much is in your drink
o Dont leave drink unattended. Probably goes without saying.
o Steer clear from mystery punch bowls.
US Standard Drink is about 0.6 fl. Oz. of alcohol.
o 1.5 ounces of liquor, 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine.
o Most liquor is about 40% alcohol, beer at 6-15%, then wine as 12%

Where Do You Stand:

There are several factors that can affect pepoples risk of experience alcohol
related problems, including gender, ethnicity, extra currics, and more
The biggest risk factors are how much alcohol I drink and how often I drink
and those are choices I make.
Many students not drink for variety of reasons.
Blood Alcohol Concentration, BAC, is the amount of alcohol in a persons
blbood.
The more heavily students drink, the greater their chances of experiencing
drinking-related problems.

Drinking and Motivation:

11% of incoming students are frequent heavy drinkers. (small group)


38% of students did not consume alcohol the past year.
34% of student drinkers who would like to drink alcohol in a safer way.
Several Factors for drinking:
o Assumptions
o Family Background
o Peer Influence
o Stress
Easy to assume everyone drinks and parties, but that actually isnt true.
Under half of college students who drink have indicated that they were either
thinking about, ready to, or currently trying to drink alcohol in safer ways.
Factors influence drinking or not: Misperceptions of actual campus drinking
norms, family background, peer influence, and stress.
Ads target men and women ifferently using stereotypes and dont show
negative side.

Brain and Body:

Clummsiness = cerebellum
Hangover = hypothalamus and dehydration
Peeing a lot = Pituitary
Memory Hippocampus

Factors of BAC include sex, weight, time, other liquids, food, and other drugs.
Risk factors include prescription, drugs, energy drinks, sugary mixes, and
drinking games.
Protective factors; eating before drinking, drinking water, and slower drinking.
Dangers of Alcohol: intensified with the addition of other drugs.
Majority of sex assaults in college involve alcohol.
Alcohol interferes with central nervous system and disrupts normal functions
of your brain and body.
Stay in .02to .04 % BAC

Helping Friends

Keep a friend from too much drinking


o Remove all alcohol from sight
o Tell him the alcohol is gone
o Pour out the drink when not looking
o Give him nonalcoholic drink
Alcohol Poisoning Signs:
o Passed out or in semiconscious state
o Difficult to wake up or get to talk
o Having abnormall slow or irregular breathing
o Having cool pale bluish or clammy skin
Alcohol Poisoning to do:
o Lay on side, not sleep it off
o Monitor his or her breathing and call 911
o Continue to monitor and stay
