FAMOUS FOREIGN SCIENTISTS

Thomas Edison (1847 - 1931)

He is the author of a large number of inventions,
but the most well-known one is the electric bulb.
Among other discoveries of Thomas Edison there
are telegraph devices, phonograph, carbon
transmitter, direct current generator, universal
electric motor, and more.

Thomas Edisons Light Bulb

Thomas Edison is most well-known for his
invention of the light bulb. Contrary to popular
belief, Edison did not invent the light bulb; it
had been around for a number of years. The
electric lights at the time, however, were
unreliable, expensive, and short-lived. Over
twenty distinct efforts by other inventors the
world over were already underway when Edison
entered the light bulb invention race.
By creating a vacuum inside the bulb, finding
the right filament to use, and running lower
voltage through the bulb, Edison was able to
achieve a light bulb that lasted for many hours.
This was a substantial improvement, and one
that led with more improvements, to making
the light bulb practical and economical.
Of course, Edison also later invented the entire electric utility system so he
could power all those light bulbs, motors and other appliances that soon
followed.

Alexander Graham Bell (1857 - 1922)

During the experiments he carried out with
the telegraph, Bell came up with the idea of
the telephone.
The inventor of one of the most popular
devices today thought that the telephone
was intruding, which is why he did not have
one in his workplace.

TELEPHONE

A
telephone,
or
phone,
is
a
telecommunications
device
that
permits two or more users to conduct a
conversation when they are too far
apart to be heard directly. A telephone
converts sound, typically and most
efficiently the human voice, into
electronic
signals
suitable
for
transmission via cables or other
transmission
media
over
long
distances, and replays such signals
simultaneously in audible form to its
user.

Sir Alexander Fleming (1881 - 1955)

During the World War I Fleming worked as an
army medical corp.
He is the inventor of penicillin that prevented a
lot of soldiers from being infected.
The discovery of penicillin managed to
significantly boost the evolution of medicine
industry.

PENICILLIN

Penicillins are a certain collection of

antibiotics
that
eliminate
infection
causing bacteria. Also known in short as
pen or PCN, they originate from a type of
fungi called Penicillium fungi. They are
used in the treatment or prevention of
many different bacterial infections,
usually
caused
by
Gram-positive
organisms.
They are well known in medicine as they
are one of the first types of antibiotic
used for major infections and diseases,
and are still used regularly in modern
medicine. Penicillins are all -Lactam
(Beta-Lactam) antibiotics, which are
antibiotic molecules with a -Lactam
nucleus.

Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955)

One of the greatest scientists of the 20th century
is the author of numerous inventions and theories
that transformed a lot of concepts linked to space
and time, with the most important discovery being
the theory of relativity. Other discoveries of
Einstein include the photoelectric effect and the
Einstein calculator.

E = mc2

E = mc2 is the worlds most famous equationa

mathematical formula with the power to
transcend the barriers of language and culture.
Matching its popularity is its deceiving
complexity.
Its
symbols,
although
easily
recognized, embody concepts contrary to the
way things seem to be.

Evangelista Torricelli (1608-1647)

The famous Italian physicist and mathematician is
the author of the barometer (scientific tool used in
the field of meteorology to estimate atmospheric
pressure), built in 1643. It would be interesting to
note that a number of Italian Navy submarines
were named after the inventor.

BAROMETER

A barometer is a scientific instrument used in

meteorology to measure atmospheric pressure.
Pressure tendency can forecast short term
changes
in
the
weather.
Numerous
measurements of air pressure are used within
surface weather analysis to help find surface
troughs, high pressure systems and frontal
boundaries.

FAMOUS FILIPINO SCIENTISTS

Pedro Flores
Inventor of YO-YO one of the most popular toy
in the world.
The word yo-yo is a Tagalog word, the native
language of the Philippines, and means 'come
back.' In the Philippines, the yo-yo was a
weapon for over 400 hundred years. Their
version was large with sharp edges and studs
and attached to thick twenty-foot ropes for
flinging at enemies or prey. People in the United
States started playing with the British
bandalore or yo-yo in the 1860s.
It was not until the 1920s that Americans first
heard the word yo-yo. Pedro Flores, a Philippine
immigrant, began manufacturing a toy labeled
with that name. Flores became the first person to mass-produce yo-yos, at
his small toy factory located in California

YO-YO

A yo-yo is a toy which in its simplest form is an object consisting of an axle

connected to two disks, and a length of string looped around the axle, similar
to a slender spool. It is played by holding the free end of the string known as
the handle (usually by inserting one finger in a slip knot) allowing gravity or

the force of a throw to spin the yo-yo and

unwind the string (similar to how a pull string
works), then allowing the yo-yo to wind itself
back to one's hand, exploiting its spin (and the
associated rotational energy)

Fe del Mundo
Inventor of Incubator=Fe del Mundo, the first
Asian to have entered the prestigious Harvard
University's School of Medicine, is also credited
for her studies that led to the invention of
incubator and jaundice relieving device. Del
Mundo, an International Pediatric Association
(IPA) awardee, is an alumna of the University of
the Philippines (UP) College of Medicine. Since
1941, she has contributed more than 100
articles to medical journals in the U.S.,
Philippines and India. In 1966, she received the
Elizabeth Blackwell Award, for her "outstanding
service to mankind". In 1977, she was bestowed
the Ramon Magsaysay Award for outstanding public service.

INCUBATOR

An incubator is a special cot that keeps

your baby warm and sometimes controls
the moisture level (humidity) around her.
Some incubators have lids, some don't.
Some have overhead heaters.

Gregorio Zara
Famous Filipino Scientist. Gregorio Zara famous Filipino scientist Gregorio Y Zara.
Filipino scientist Gregorio Y. Zara (D.Sc.
Physics) invented, made improvements to,
or discovered the following: invented the
two-way
television
telephone
or
videophone (1955) patented as a "photo
phone
signal
separator
network";
discovered the physical law of electrical
kinetic resistance called the Zara effect
(around 1930); invented an airplane
engine that ran on plain alcohol as fuel
(1952).

VIDEOPHONE

A videophone is a telephone with a video

display, capable of simultaneous video and
audio for communication between people in
real-time. Videophone service provided the
first form of videotelephony, later to be
followed by videoconferencing, webcams,
and finally high-definition telepresence.

FELIX MARAMBA
Felix Maramba built a coconut oil-fueled power
generator. He also is the developer of one of
the world's most profitable biogas systems.
Other Achievements:
Felix Maramba is the president of the
Philippine Association of Flour Millers, Inc.
Felix Maramba wrote: Biogas and Waste
Recycling, The Philippine Experience.

Roberto del Rosario

Karaoke Sing Along System: Karaoke is
a Japanese expression for singing along to a
famous record with the vocals removed.
Roberto del Rosario described his sing-along
system as a handy multi-purpose compact
machine which incorporates an amplifier
speaker, one or two tape mechanisms,
optional tuner or radio and microphone
mixer with features to enhance ones voice,
such as the echo or reverb to stimulate an
opera hall or a studio sound, with the whole
system enclosed in one cabinet casing.

KARAOKE SING ALONG SYSTEM

KARAOKE is a form of interactive entertainment

or video game in which an amateur singer sings
along with recorded music (a music video) using
a microphone and public address system. The
music is typically a well-known popular song
minus the lead vocal. Lyrics are usually displayed
on a video screen, along with a moving symbol,
changing color, or music video images, to guide
the singer.
