Adifferentiatingaspectofcaseworkisthatthecaseflowcanrarelybecompletelypredeterminedand,
therefore,cannotcompletelybeprescribedatdesigntime.Mostcaseworkrequiressomedegreeof
adaptivebehaviorintheruntimeexperience,whichenablesthecaseworkertoaddresstheuniqueneeds
ofhisorhercase.BuyersofBPMplatformbasedCMFsmustdeterminetherightdegreeofadaptability
neededfortheirsolutiondomain.Typically,theprogressionofacaseispartiallystructured
(predetermined)andpartiallyunstructured.
Therearetwoapproachesfordelimitingtherangeofadaptability:
Atoneendofthespectrum,caseworkcanbeperformedaccordingtoadesign(doingbydesign),
wherehandlingoptionsarepredefinedaspartofthedesign.Here,workerschoosethemost
appropriateoptionfortheircase.
Attheotherendofthespectrum,casehandlingcanbeperformedcompletelyatthediscretionof
thecaseworker(designbydoing),wherethecaseworkerdecideswhatshouldhappennext,based
oncontext.Casehandlingisimprovisedbasedonthecontextualsituation.
Mostbuyerrequirementsexistsomewherebetweenthesetwoextremes.Thus,akeyrequirementisto
considerhowadaptivecasehandlingneedstobe.
Waysofstrikingabalancebetweenplannedandunplannedactionsincludelimitingprivilegesandaccess
rightsbasedonrole,namedworkerorsomeothercriterialimitingthetypeofadhocaction(thatis,
humanperformedtasksonly)orlimitingthetiming/contextofwhentheactionscanoccur.

Caseworkersoftenneedtheabilitytodecideonthebest,nextactiontotakeonacase,basedonthe
context.Adaptivebehaviorreferstothetypeofactionspossible(plannedandunplanned,humanand
systemperformed)andthetimingofwhensuchactionscanoccur(plannedandunplanned).

theapplication.Themorecustomization,themoredifficultupgradesbecome.WithBPMplatformbased
CMFs,the"modelasmetadata"approachfacilitatestheeaseandvisibilityofchanges.Additional
mechanismsarealsoneededtoreconcilepotentiallyduplicative,contradictoryandoverlapping

actionsonthecaseisveryadhoc,andeventandmilestonedriven.Examplesincludetax,creditand
