A fully loadedmine lift cagehasa massof 5000kg. The lifting specificationrequires:
(I) Lifting speedof 5 meterVsecond
(steadystate)
(II) Lifting time from startto steadystatg l0 seconds.
Assuminga constantiifting forceduringaccelerationanda systemefliciencyof 45Yo,
i) What minimummotor sizeis requiredduringacceleration
in kW andin HP?
ii) What is the lifting powerrequiredin steadystatein kW andin FIP?
g:9.81 m /s

2. (10 marks)
The starter motor on a car draws 75 amperesstarting current, which lowers the battery
voltage from 12.6 volts to 9.1 volts. What would be the battery voltage if it were being
chargedat 30 amperes?

3. (20 marks)
For the circuit shownbelowdeterminethe following:
i) ThevalueofR to receivethe maximumpower

A 120-voltsourcewith an impedance
of (0.05+ j0.025)ohmssuppliesa motor,
which at the instantof startinghasan impedanceof (0.25+ j I .0) ohms. Giventhat
themotorwill startthreetimesper hour, would you agrewith supplyingan
incandescent
lighting load from the samecircuit? Explainwhy.

The impedanceup to the terminals of a residential wall outlet plug is calculatedto be
(0.2 +j0.4) ohms. With no load plugged into the outlet, the voltage is measuredat
120volts.
i) The circuit is protectedby a fuse. A short circuit, having no impedance, occurs at
the plug. What are the symmetrical and the asymmetrical short circuit currents?
ii) An electric heaterrated 1500 watts at 120 volts (pure resistanceload) is plugged
into the outlet. Calculatethe voltage supplied to the heater.
iii) Calculate the heat provided by the heaterin watts, assumingthat its resistance
remains constantat its rated value-
