The Caro Clinic honors Dr. Richard J. Caro's 40 Years of continuous

service as a Primary Care Physician to the residents of
Gonzales and Ascension Parish.

On the evening of

Dr. Richard J. Caro's forty

years of service. The event took
place at the clinic (609 E
Worthy Street, across from East

forty years. The event was

thrown by current owner and

Monteyne, and all the staff of
the Caro Clinic.

In attendance at the party were most of

Dr. Caro's immediate and extended family,
many of whom came from out of state. In

colleagues and former employees from his
many years in practice were also there to
commemorate the occasion. To top off
the evening, the Mayor of Gonzales, the
Honorable Barney D. Arceneaux,
presented Dr. Caro with a plaque
celebrating July 1st, 2015 as Richard J.

EATEL Awards
Six Local
Students
with Laptop
Computers
Six outstanding scholars from our local high
schools were honored on April 22, 2015 at
EATELs annual Technology Awards Ceremony,
now in its 29th year. Focusing on the
importance of both technology and academic
success, EATEL presented one outstanding
graduating senior from each high school in its
serving area, Donaldsonville, Dutchtown, East
Ascension, French Settlement, Maurepas and
St. Amant, with a touch-screen, ultra-portable
laptop computer. The ceremony was held in
the lobby of EATELs Administration Building
(406 E. Worthey Road, Gonzales, LA).
EATEL Technology Award applicants must have
an overall grade point average of 3.0 or
higher, actively participate in school and
community activities, and plan to pursue their
studies at a Louisiana-accredited college or
university. These students must also plan to
pursue a major in one of the STEM categories:
science, technology, engineering, or math. The
2015 recipients were chosen from a pool of
applicants by a counselor from each school.
My hope for these students is that theyll
continue to persevere in their academic success
as they seek their undergraduate degrees,
said Ashley Phillips, EATEL Executive Vice
President, Infrastructure. I hope that when
they graduate, our Louisiana economy will
provide them with great jobs, so that they can
raise their families here and continue to be an
integral part of our thriving community.
Its such an affirmation of our community, of
the work that we do in our school system,
when we see these top-notch students who
have profited so much from their opportunities
and have accomplished so many things, at
such a young age, and who are so well-poised
and launched for the next phase of their lives,
said Dr. Patrice Pujol, Ed.D., Superintendent of
Ascension Parish Public Schools. I have no
doubt that these will be amazing leaders in our

community one day. Id like to say a heartfelt

Colored
Diamonds:
Fancy and
Fabulous
with Layne Gautreau
Clear white diamonds are world
famous for their brilliant sparkle and
fire. But surprisingly enough,
diamonds also come in a rainbow
of vivid, flashing colors that add a
magic look to holiday jewelry.
Colored diamonds are called fancies
and are available in red, blue, pink,
canary yellow, brown, peach, orange,
purple, green, violet, gray, and black.

In addition, colored diamonds come

Most colored diamonds are rare and

more expensive than colorless white
diamonds. Only diamonds have the
brilliant inner fire that sets them apart
from all other gems.
More intensely colored diamonds are
usually cut to ideal proportions to
deliver maximum brilliancy and life.
These cuts include round, triangle,
square, and rectangular. More subtle
colored diamonds are cut in less
refractive shapes, such as oval and
radiant, to enhance and deepen the
delicate color.

Radiant red ruby has been highly

esteemed for centuries because of its
vivid, fiery-red color representing
passion and romance. While there are
several other red gemstones only ruby

Prevention

Skin Cancer
Screening and
Prevention

Skin Cancer is the most

common form of cancer, yet is
the most preventable. Here are
some things to keep in mind
when looking out for signs of
skin cancer.

Skin Cancer Types

Most skin cancer is classified as
basal cell carcinoma, also called
BCC. Some of these cancerous
growths have visible blood
vessels throughout, can look
like open sores, and can be pink
and flat or multi-colored and
raised. These are most often
found around the head and
neck, including the scalp, which
is quite difficult to examine

yourself.
Squamous cell carcinoma, or
SCC, is the second most
common form of skin cancer.
Unlike basal cell, this cancer is
in the upper layer of the skin.
Its also more deadly than
BCC, but preventable and
treatable. Its mostly caused
from UV exposure over time
but can also be caused from
skin inflammation and diseases.
BCC is more commonly found
in older adults; however, more
cases are being diagnosed in
younger adults.

Justin Harvey has been named
President of A+ Corporation, a
family-owned and operated business with headquarters in
Gonzales, La. At 30 years of
age, Harvey grew up in the
company, having been formally
employed for 11 years.
Harveys grandfather, Donald
Mayeaux, founded A+
Corporation in 1989. Mayeaux
created product concepts that
changed the way natural gas was
being sampled. He pioneered
the use of membranes for
removing liquids to protect analyzers in both gas and liquid
streams with the Genie
Membrane Separators.
The company applied this technology in sample extraction
probes for high pressure natural
gas pipelines that can be installed
under pipeline pressure. This
patented technology is the only
one of its kind written into and
accepted by industry standards.
When Donald Mayeaux transitioned ownership and control of
the company to his children, A+
Corporation continued to practice his devotion to inventions
based on scientific principles.
A+ Corporation now holds 32
patents and has 10 patents pending, having sold 9 additional
patents. This innovative company has grown to include a network of distributor inventory in
more than 20 countries.
Now, 26 years since its inception, the third generation takes
the reins.
I am excited to get started in
this role and to lead A+

of our business, said Harvey.

My grandfather was my inspiration and role model, and Im
proud to follow in his footsteps.
I will strive to ensure A+ continues to lead the market with
exciting new technologies based
on expert data and sound
research, and Im fortunate to
have the right team in place to
make that happen.
Since he was a boy, Justin
Harvey prepared for this position by working in almost every

his mother, company

for his work that my father did,
she added. We are confident in
his leadership and excited both
for him and for A+.

Mouth Sores
By Calvin Bessonet, DDS,FAGD

Mouth sores come in several

different varieties and can
have any number of causes,
including:
Infections from bacteria,
viruses or fungus
Irritation from a loose
orthodontic wire, a denture
that doesnt fit, or a sharp edge
from a broken tooth or filling
The symptom of a disease or
disorder.
Your dentist should examine
any mouth sore that lasts a
week or longer. Among the
most common mouth sores are:

Canker sores.
Small ulcers with a white or
gray base and a red border,
canker sores appear inside the
mouth. They are not contagious, but can return frequently
and may be only one canker
sore or several. Their exact
cause is uncertain but some
experts believe that immune

system problems, bacteria or

viruses may be involved. Canker
sores usually heal on their own
after a week or two. Over-thecounter topical anesthetics and
antimicrobial mouthwashes may
provide temporary relief. Stay
away from hot, spicy or acidic
foods that can irritate the sore.
Antibiotics from your dentist
and some oral bandages can
reduce secondary infection.

Cold sores (also

called fever blisters.)
Groups of fluid-filled blisters
that often erupt around the lips
and sometimes under the nose
or around the chin. Cold sores
are caused by the herpes
simplex virus type 1 and are
very contagious. The initial
infection (primary herpes) may
be confused with a cold or flu
and can cause painful lesions to
erupt throughout the mouth.
Once a person is infected with
primary herpes, the virus stays
in the body and causes
occasional attacks. Cold sore
blisters usually heal in a week
by themselves. Over-the-

counter topical anesthetics can

provide some relief. Your
dentist may prescribe antiviral
drugs to reduce these kinds of
viral infections.

Leukoplakia.
Thick, whitish-color patches
that form on the inside of the
cheeks, gums or tongue, these
patches are caused by excess cell
growth and are common
among tobacco users. They can
result from irritations such as
an ill-fitting denture or the
habit of chewing on the inside
of the cheek. Sometimes leukoplakia is associated with oral
cancer. Your dentist may recommend a biopsy if the patch
appears
suspicious. Your dentist will
examine the lesion and check
the biopsy results to help
determine how to manage the
disease. Treatment begins with
removing the factors that
contribute to the lesion:
quitting tobacco or replacing
ill-fitting dentures or bridges.

Candidiasis.
This fungal infection (also
called moniliasis or oral thrush)
occurs when the yeast Candida
albicans reproduce in large
numbers. It is common among
denture wearers. Most often it
occurs in people with weak
immune systemsthe very
young, elderly or those
debilitated by disease, such as
diabetes or leukemia. In
addition, people with dry
mouth syndrome are
susceptible to candidiasis.
Candida may also flourish after
antibiotic treatment, which can
decrease normal bacteria in the
mouth. Controlling candidiasis
means focusing on preventing
or controlling the condition
that causes the outbreak. Good
oral hygiene is essential. Clean
your dentures to remove
Candida and remove them at
bedtime. If the cause is dry
mouth saliva substitutes and
prescription medications may
be helpful when the underlying
cause of dry mouth is incurable
or unavoidable.

YOUR ESTATE MATTERS

By Linda Melancon
receive an 8% increase for each
year after FRA that he waits to
start his benefits until reaching
age 70. This could result in a
32% increase in the total amount
of payments available throughout
lifetime if FRA is 66 but he waits
until 70 to receive benefits. Also
remember, that if married, a
spouse can draw their own benefit
or of their spouses benefit.

Social Security
Benefits
the Strategies
Last month, we discussed the
basics of Social Security and also
discussed that married couples
have several options when
deciding when to take their benefits. This month, we will describe
two strategies used by married
couples to maximize benefits
the file and suspend strategy
and the claim now, claim more
later strategy.
As discussed last month, a person
can delay filing for benefits at full
retirement age (FRA) and

The file and suspend strategy

works best where one spouse
worked and the other did not
work or rarely worked and will
not be entitled to social security
benefits or their amount will be
small. It requires that one spouse
be at (FRA). When the working
spouse reaches FRA, he files for
and immediately suspends receipt
of benefits which allows his
benefits to continue to grow at
8% per year until 70. Since he
filed for benefits, his spouse can
draw on his record and start
receiving of his benefit amount.
Then, when he reaches 70, he can
start receiving increased benefits.
For example, assume John and
Jane are both at FRA. John
worked outside the home and
Jane was a homemaker. He is
entitled to receive $1,000 a
month in Social Security benefits

but he wants to delay his benefits

for 4 years so he can receive
$1,320 a month, as opposed to
$1,000 a month. However, if he
simply delays his benefit, Jane will
be unable to receive benefits
because she has no work record of
her own to draw on. By using the
file and suspend strategy, John
can file for his benefits, then
immediately suspend his payments
while allowing Jane to file to
receive benefits immediately based
on his work record. Then, when
he reaches 70 he will receive the
higher benefit amount.
The claim now, claim more later
strategy can also boost a married
couples return from Social
Security. This strategy works by
allowing one spouse to claim benefits early, while the other spouse,
who is already at FRA, claims only
spousal benefits, which allows his
or her personal benefits to grow.
For example, Jane claims her
$2,000 benefit at the age of 62.
Her husband, John, who is at
FRA, files to receive only spousal
benefits based on her record,
which is equal to of her benefit
since he has already reached FRA.
This allows John to receive
income from his spousal benefit
immediately, while still allowing
his own benefit payments to grow.
Finally, by combining both
strategies, a married couple can
both increase their benefits. Both
spouses must be at FRA for this to
work. Assume Jane is the higher

earner and she files for and

immediately suspends benefits
until age 70. John then files for
and receives spousal benefits of
of Janes amount on her record.
At age 70, Jane will claim her own
benefits which will have grown by
8% per year and John will switch
from spousal benefits to his own
benefits which continued to grow
at 8% per year.
As you can see, knowing when to
file for Social Security benefits and
which benefits to file for can be a
confusing task. There are factors
specific to certain individuals that
exclude them from taking advantage of the above strategies or
reasons why they may be better
served by not using these
strategies. Before making any
decisions about taking your Social
Security, you should always consult with someone well versed in
these benefits and strategies.
Failure to do so before making an
election may impact the amount
of income you will receive
throughout your retirement years.

LATISSE Q & A
What is
LATISSE?
LATISSE (bimatoprost
ophthalmic solution) 0.03% is
the first and only prescription
treatment approved by the FDA
for inadequate or sparse
eyelashes lashes grow longer,
fuller and darker.

Does LATISSE
change the color
of my eyes?
This is the most common
misconceptionabout LATISSE.
It is applied topically so only if
you are careless and get
it in your eyes, and only if you
have hazel eyes, blue/brown or
green/brown eyes. Pure blue or
green eyes do not have enough
melanocytes to get darker. If
you are already dark brown, it
can not get any darker.

How is LATISSE
applied?
LATISSE is applied each
evening to the base of the upper
eyelashes. Before applying
LATISSE makeup should be
removed as well as contact
lenses (If applicable). Contact
lenses can be placed back in the
eye after 15 minutes following
the application of LATISSE.
Using the single-use applicator
brush provided in the package,

one drop of LATISSE is

placed on the applicator brush
and applied to the base of the
upper eyelid lash margin. The
same process is repeated using a
fresh applicator brush to avoid
cross contamination.

How long does it

take to see results
using LATISSE?
LATISSE users may see results
as soon as 4 weeks with full
results at 12 to 16 weeks. The
growth is gradual and over time.
If the use of LATISSE is
discontinued, eyelashes are
expected to return to their
previous appearance over several
weeks to months.

What are potential

side effects of
LATISSE?
The most common side effects
after using LATISSE solution
are an itching sensation in the
eyes and/or eye redness. This
was reported in approximately
4% of patients in the clinical
study. Other less common side
effects include skin darkening,
eye irritation, dryness of the
eyes and redness of the eyelids.

and here is his story.
On May 30, 2010 around 8am
He was in a guard tower in
Pashmul, Afghanistan. As he
was getting a back brief from
the previous guard shift and
waiting for his soldier to come
to the tower for guard duty a
rocket propelled grenade hit his
tower and he came under small
arms fire. After he came to,
from the shell shock, he
checked on the two soldiers in
his tower and got one calling it
in on the radio. He raised up to
return fire with the others and
call out the six shooters with
AK-47s. He dropped to make
and see mist on one shooter.
While reloading a round goes

he dropped. He went threw a

From there he went to Walter

WE COME TO YOU!

Spotless Auto Mobile Detailing is a self contained

Rain
I can't tell you how many
times this past April and May
that I've heard the statement
"I wish it would stop raining".
I must admit that I felt that it
kinda needed to dry up a little
myself, but I really steer away
from asking for the rain to stop
and plus, there's nothing you
can do about it anyway. I
probably would feel different to
some degree if I had two feet of
water in my living room, but
I've learned through the years to
watch what you ask for, because
you might just get it and you
probably won't like those results
either. It won't take long after it
quits raining before you begin
to hear, "we need a little rain".
You'll even begin to see some
folks running sprinklers in their
yards to water grass. This is a
practice that I do not agree
with, but that's my opinion
and as opinions go, we all
have them.
For years I've struggled
inside my brain to find one
thing on this earth that's more
important than water. To this
date water is still at the top of
the list. If you don't believe me
try living without it at your
house for just one hour. Our
entire food source depends on
water. Crops, livestock, poultry,
wildlife, shellfish, fish and most
other forms of life depend on
water to survive.
Most of the things that I
truly love are directly related to
the water resources. It's true
that too much water can have a
negative effect on crops, fish and
wildlife, but too much is usually
better than not enough. Turkey
reproduction can be hindered by
wet springs, but severe drought

can hurt even worse. Several

years ago our midwestern states
suffered from very low amounts
of rain. Not only did this affect
ranching and farming, it also
affected wildlife populations in
these states also. Turkey
numbers dropped significantly
and since the rains have now
reappeared, the birds are now
on the road to recovery.
Every drop of water that you
see came from some form of
precipitation- rain, sleet, ice or
snow. I cannot think of any
other way that water is produced
other than condensation. It
would be great if we all could
get just the right amount of
water we need whenever we
wanted it, but that ain't about
to happen. I know that a
rainstorm can put a damper on
some very finely laid out plans
and it's always been a pain to
work in it, but through the years
I've learned to take it for what it
is. I love the rain and I don't
care to live without it, as a
matter of fact, life as we know it
can't survive without it.....

Give us a call and We come to you.

Historical-or Hysterical-Downtown Districts

Like many other
grandparents in this area, our
social calendar is determined
by when, where and whatever
sports our grandkids are
playing.
Which is why we found
ourselves in Branson, Missouri,
a few weeks ago watching our
grandson Will participating in
the USSA Under 11 World
Series. A good time was had by
all and the Prairieville Pirates
battled all the way back from
two early losses to take home a
second place trophy.
And Branson is a nice enough
town if you ignore the traffic
snarl on the main drag and the
endless number of tribute
bands. On one stretch alone
there were groups covering
everything from ABBA, the Bee
Gees and the Beatles to Neil
Diamond, John Denver and
Elvis. So there were some big
names in lights-just no traffic
lights to be seen.
Now one familiar theme that
we noticed in Branson and in
many smaller towns in Arkansas
was that everyone seemed to
have a Historical Downtown
District. I can understand
how towns like Hope, Delight
and Fordyce are justifiably
proud of native sons Bill
Clinton, Glen Campbell and
Bear Bryant respectively. But
some of these villages like
Hardy (population 722) must
have had to create a little
history of their own to qualify
for a historical classification.
Then I started thinking
(Danger, danger)-if I could
create a bit of local history
and use my Journalism 101 rule
of thumb-Never let the truth
get in the way of a good
story.-I believe we could conduct an interesting, and perhaps
profitable, tour of Historical
Downtown Gonzales.
Before we begin, please
remember how my brain-cell
depleted cerebral cortex
functions. Most of my remaining memory is in the way
back mode so that I can recall
images of the 60s and 70s
much better than I can
remember what happened
yesterday. Thus, some of the
places and people youll hear

by Bill Delaune
about on this tour may no
returned brandishing the 12
longer exist. Also, some of the gauge, Butch ran through the
stories may classify as urban
backdoor into a clothesline,
legends or have an air of
Ralph made it across the street
mystery surrounding them.
to an EATEL phone booth
In fact if we visit enough old

I find this place

to be adequate.
Horses are
allowed!

days gone by, we can call it the

Magical Mystery Tour of the
Ghosts of Gonzales and maybe
well qualify for a reality show.
Now if youll climb aboard our
Calco bus, well begin this tour
de farce
Today, we are starting from
Airline Highway and headed
south down Burnside. If you
look to the right, youll see a
blue auto parts store. But once
there was a quaint little spot
there called the KYI lounge.
Legend has it that one night a
trio of patrons-lets call them
Butch, Ralph and Billy- were
playfully picking on a local
physician-lets call him Doc.
When another lounge denizen
misinterpreted their sarcastic
jibes, he went home to fetch a
shotgun to defend the popular
physicians honor. When he

and Billy later told the authorities, Thats not the gun he
pointed at me. The one he
pointed at me was much bigger!
By the way, there were never
any shells in the gun.
Now to the left was once the
site of Gonzaless only drive-in
movie where many classic
romances appeared on the big
screen. Later the location
became Galleries Gonzales with
a huge parking lot where many
of Gonzaless own romances
took place in the back seats of
cars under the guise of waiting
for their order from Quik
Snack.
And if a guy ran short of cash
and couldnt afford a burger
from that establishment for his
date, he could circle back to
the block building on your

30

right-once known as Dairy

Kurl-and get a chili bun and a
cherry coke for about 50 cents.
Up here on the left is the
historic St. Theresas Church
where a chorus of well-meaning
repenters showed up at early
morning mass after an
all-nighter at the Festival and
mistakenly sang Jum-ba-la, my
Lord instead of Kum-ba-ya.
And next door is the Riverside
Barber Shop where Bobby,
Pomp and Jim would fish off
the porch in New River on
slow days.
Now pay close attention to
the lots on both sides of
Lamendolas Grocery. On one
side was Cassos Bar where
during one crowded Sunday of
the aforementioned Jambalaya
Festival, a Winestoned
Cowboy-lets call him
Mike-rode a horse into the bar
and ordered a drink for both
of them.
On the other side was the
legendary Town Tavern where
Gonzaless finest would gather
at halftime of the Bulldogs
games to discuss second-half
strategy and perhaps hedge a
few bets. And further up on
the left was Roy Marchandsthe home of the best chicken
loaf in the universe. The eatery
was also the northernmost
boundary of the Festival when
it was held on Burnside and
locals learned to jitterbug on
eight to ten inches of beer cans
in the street.
Of course, Spartan Field to
our right was the scene of some
historic victories but one
incident of the not-so-glorious
variety occurred one night
when the kicker-lets call him
Ronnie-missed the ball on the
opening kickoff. Not to be
denied, he circled around and
missed it again. The event led
to an epic poem-Trumpets
blew the fanfare, Whistles blew
for play, Kicker blew the
kickoff, We always start
that way.
And the soccer fields on the
right were once the baseball
field where all of Gonzales
played. Across the road was a
small version of Town Hall and
the Sheriffs Office and the
story goes that Bruce Lavigne

once hit a ball that bounced

right here on Burnside and hit
the door causing an officer to
answer the knock.
A little further down on the
left was Fiesta Grill-a place
where the steaks and burgers
were so good that when the
owners decided to purchase
new equipment, customers
revolted and demanded their
food be cooked on the old
grill. It would later become
the first home of Leaders Fried
Chicken but store the memory
of this location for a later stop.
Remember this red light at
Cornerview for future reference
also and while were stopped,
gaze a ways down to your right
at the former home of Francess
Grocery where Mr. Myles tried
to remove a rather large
television off the wall one night
to keep the Yankees from
winning the World Series and
losing a bet to Bud.
And now for our final stop
on this tour, well pull into the
parking lot of this Mexican
Restaurant that was once
Daltons-an establishment with
a history all its own. But if you
want to grab a margarita, Ill

take you back even further in

time to a place called
Fish-N-Pic-a little bar that
featured a cast of characters that
Hollywood would have trouble
duplicating.
One busy Friday when
Burnside was only two lanes,
one of the regulars-lets call
him Gordon-arrived to find
someone had parked in his
parking space. Our hero
decided to station his vehicle
about 10 feet directly behind
the intruder so that he could
pull into his spot when the
guy left and took his seat at
the bar for a few rum and
cokes. Sometime later, the
poor fellow got ready to leave
and decided he needed more
room to get out.
Can you move your car? he
asked Gordon.
Dont you have enough
room? Gordon replied
incredulously.
No, came the answer.
Cant you back this car up?
Oh, I can back it up all
right, said Gordon reaching
for his keys.
And back it up he did, ladies
and gentlemen. Back into the

busy traffic on Burnside. All

the way back to the signal I
alluded to a moment ago on
Cornerview-dutifully stopping
at the red light. And-still in
reverse-into the parking lot of
Leaders Fried Chicken.
Is that enough room for
you? Gordon shouted back.
Can you get out now? And
then to no one in particular,
Can I back this car up?
These have been only a few
of the highlights of Historic
Downtown Gonzales, ladies
and gentlemen. May I suggest
you take the music and arts

the white kids always wanted to
sit in the balcony which was
reserved for minorities and
the Jungle House where we

Its All
About
Time
By Brandt Bourque

Its hard to say exactly what it

is about Swamp Pop music
that lends itself so well to
Ascension Parish. There are
plenty of different musical styles
that are popular in the area but
the one genre that all ages and
types will agree on is good ole
swamp pop. The music just
moves you and puts you in a
good mood, whether you are
out dancing, cooking or changing the oil in you car, swamp
pop is the go to music for so
many people around this area.
Local band Kenny Cornett

and Killin Time have been

pumping out great swamp pop
music for over 25 years now!
The band style is influenced
mostly by local artists such as
Van Broussard, Mike Broussard,
Cookie and the Cupcakes,
Warren Storm, Johnny Allen
and Little Alfred. Based out of
Gonzales, LA, the band played
their first gig in 1990 and
haven't looked back. They first
began performing in Livingston

32

Parish and quickly branched out

covering the South, from
Jackson Mississippi, all the way
down to Grande Isle. Kenny
Cornett and Killin Time
started out as a four piece band,
and has now grown into a
seven piece band featuring twin
keyboards and horns!
Committed to providing the
best show possible, night after
night, they hired a full time
sound technician that travels to

performances with them.

The bands line up includes
three generations of the
Cornett family:
Kenny Cornett
Keyboard and Vocals,
Rhett Cornett Percussion,
Justin Cornett Saxophone.
Completing the line up for
Killin Time is
Buddy Borum
Bass guitar and Vocals,
Horace Shows
Trumpet and Vocals,
Jim Aime Lead Guitar,
Gerry Eiermann Keyboard,
Trumpet and Vocals,
and full time sound technician,
Russ Peanut Luquete.
Although the band is known
for its Swamp Pop style of
music, a normal nights set list

PAYING
ATTENTION
TO DETAILS
Pay attention young man! my
Mom used to say. Sometimes
I swear. I dont think you know
if you are coming or going, get
the lead out! my coaches used
to say. We get pushed along
through life and I believe that
hustle and bustle helped me
turn out alright.
Imagine if we had cell phones
when we were 15. Hell we
found the parties by word of
mouth and actually talking to
each other. But today social

media is bothering me and may

be my demise.
This past year I have been in
two car wrecks while I was
sitting still at the light or a
STOP sign. I can give you one
guess as to the reason for the
crashes, but your not going to
need it. You know that they
were looking at their cell
phones. Its a wonder young
folks make past 20 years old.
I went to the drive through
teller at the bank a couple of
weeks back. I sat in line behind
a small compact car. I watched
the driver put her deposit in the
opened drawer. After a few
minutes the drawer opened and
she retrieved the contents. The
drawer closes and I prepare to
move up. I sit and sit for about
4 minutes because I thought
she had another transaction.
Finally I gave a small honk on
the horn. She pressed the gas
and drove off. When I got to
the window the teller rolled her
eyes at me. She told me the girl
finished and just started texting.
She then thanked me for
honking because she couldnt
get her attention from inside
the bank. She wasnt paying

attention.
One night I went to turn into
Snos Seafood and there was a
car with no lights sitting and
looking abandoned in the
middle of the entrance. Half on
the entrance side and half on
the exit side. Upon a closer
look I did see a dim light in the
drivers seat. After squeezing
through I turn around and
pulled up be hind and got out
to see if she needed help. When
I approached I realized she was
just sitting there texting. What
has the world come too? I went
back to my car and layed on the
horn. She jumped and then
took off. My Lord, Pay
attention.
Last week I had the need to
go by Walmart. It took me a
while to find a parking place
without walking a mile. Finally
one became available. As I got
out I noticed the call of nature
had come upon me and I
scooted toward the restroom in
the store. I dont know about
you but my bladder becomes
impatient the closer I get to the
facility. By the time I arrived at
the restrooms I dashed in. The
stalls were closed and I noticed
there were no urinals. Whoops?
Im in the girls room.
Fortunately there were no ladies
or at least I thought. As I

walked out I looked back to see

high heels under the stall wall
which confirmed it was the girls
room. Unless Bruce Jenner was
visiting Prairieville.
You may say to me pay
attention but I want to take
issue with the restroom door
signs. If you notice there is very
little difference from the Mens
symbol as to the Womens
symbol. Sure I see the little
dress wing thing for the
Womens but I wear my shirt
tails out and have a few pounds
on me. If you look and think
the Womens symbol could be
considered a portly man with
his shirt out. I know its a
stretch but why dont we put
one sign in red and the other in
blue. No mistaking that. I know
Im making excuses. In reality
Im trying to cover my
embarrassment. Maybe I should
pay attention.
Well its summer time and I
am playing all the golf my body
will allow. Two or three times a
week I am chasing that little
white ball around. Its great
hobbie and sport but it has its
draw backs. It can get hot out
there. I spray sun screen
every time I play. My arms, my
face, ears and neck but not my
legs. I noticed a couple of
weeks that I was two toned

from my legs and feet. It is a little embarrassing when I wear

my flip flops. Ive even had
people comment on the white
feet at BBQs and such. Short of
playing golf barefoot, which
protocol will not allow, I dont
know the solution. One thing
for sure is Im going to play
golf. I did start wearing a
shorter sock to tan more of my
leg but that created a new
problem. I still have a sock foot
tan but the shorter socks have
created a striped effect. Now I
look like candy striped gum.
I dont know what I was

thinking but at least I was

thinking. Maybe I should pay a
little more attention but know
this. I aint sitting in a dark car
parked in the middle of the road
or crashing into vehicles sitting
still. And yes, my bladder
sometimes has mind of its own.
He who has not ever hurried
and made a mistake cast the first
stone.Im sure there are lots of
folks not paying attention to the
signs and have made similar
decisions.

The Difference
is in the Details

By Tracy
Farewell
Well yall it has been such fun
writing for Ascension Magazine,
but Im afraid Im calling it
quits. Managing a full-time
job, a home, family and working our land on the weekends,
this old girls schedule is busting at the seam. And until they
make a 30 hour day that gives
me the time to do all I want
Im having to let something go
in order to have time for a new
interest of mine-Wood Carving,
so, Im trading my writing time
for carving time and stepping
off the page to allow someone
else a turn.
From the good grace of Mike
Strong and all the readers Ive
been given the opportunity
share my thoughts and
discovered that many more than
I thought share the same views
as I. Conversing with each of
you has been so rewarding for
me. Ive learned so much from
your insight.
Ive been asked about the name
Intrepid Thoughts. I decided
on Intrepid as it describes me
very well -fearless, bold and
brave which is evident of the
subjects on which Ive written.
As I go, Id like to recap a few
of the messages. While some
were ambiguous and others
direct all were what used to be
called common sense. That is
what most of the readers
enjoyed the most, they said.
Before you follow anyone,
ask where theyre going.
Being your own biggest fan
is tacky.
Real life is far more beautiful
than a picture of it on your
phone.
There is good in everyone.
Treat people nice.

Stop texting while driving.

Youre not nearly as good at it
as you believe. No, youre not.
Dont take more than you
really need. Others may need
too.
Try. You might surprise
yourself.
Easy doesnt do it.
Equal doesnt depend on
others to provide their living.
Acceptance of all people is
far different than acceptance of
all behavior. Stop grouping
their meaning and calling it discrimination.
Dont under estimate
anyone. Were all good at
something.
There are consequences, like
it or not.
Dont be the house on the
block that everyone hates. Be
considerate.
Smile. It looks good on
you.
Just because someone thinks
theyre better than you, its only
true if you believe them.
If we cant say youre fat.
Dont say were skinny.
Perception of offense is no
excuse.
Give compliments.
Everyone has something
beautiful about them.

Grass Rangers is dedicated to making

your life easier by providing trained
crews to Design, Build and Maintain
almost any aspect of your landscape.

Thank you everyone for having

me around and reading my
thoughts. And thank you again
to Mike Strong for allowing me
the opportunity to be part of
his magazine. I had a great
time!
Well, on to the next
adventure. Write me anytime
