ADVOCACY

Dear Students,
As you've learned in the last few years (through community resource mapping), anywhere you practice medicine, it is
essential to know the basic services offered by the city, state, and federal governments. Some services are particularly
utilized by families with young children (lead inspections, WIC, etc.). It is also important to stay aware of legislation that
affects your area of practice. For example, the 2006 Amendments to the Illinois Perinatal HIV Prevention Law have greatly
improved HIV testing of pregnant women and, in some cases, infants of mothers whose status is unknown. Please take the
time to familiarize yourself with these websites and review the resources in this section.
Best,
Robert and Julie

-Rear-facing carseat until 2 years old (or exceeds weight/height limit).
-Change to forward-facing carseat at 2 years old or when the child outgrows the rear-facing seat (whichever occurs first).
Use forward-facing carseat as long as possible, that is, until the weight/height limit exceeded. This should occur around 4
years old.
-Change to belt-positioning booster seats once the forward-facing carseat is outgrown. Use the belt-positioning booster seat
until the vehicle lap-and-shoulder seat belt fits properly. This typically occurs when a child reaches 4 ft 9 in and is between
8y and 12y.
-Use the lap-and-shoulder seats belts for all children who have outgrown their boosters seats.
-All children under 13 years of age should be restrained in the rear seats of vehicles for optimal protection.
