the city for the past nine years.
“That was a good comeback.
You like to win to build their
confidence, but it is not the most
important thing. You want them
to have fun.”
Shelly Wik, who handles the
scorebook for her husband’s
team, said it teaches the players
about team sports.
“You learn the skills and all
about sportsmanship,” she said.
The kids in the Farm League
range in age from 6 to 8. They
have 20 practice games and then
they go into playoffs. The games
are played on Saturdays and
Mondays. The season lasts
about three months.
“We try and move the players
around, so they learn all the
positions,” John Wik added. “It
is kind of cool watching these
kids grow up. I still see kids who
I coached a few years ago and
they come up to me and say,
‘hey coach.’ That’s really cool.”
Dan Rush, who is in his sec-
ond year coaching in the
Deerfield Beach Little League, is
in his first year as head coach of
the Blue Claws.
