welcomE to the fifth az aWards issue, our annual celebration of the very
best in design and architecture. Each year, we invite a group of experts to
Toronto to plow through a mountain of submissions, in the hope of surfacing with a short list of exceptional projects and products. Hundreds of
entries came in from near and far 720 in total, representing 43 countries.
Needless to say, its a big job that leaves the jurors feeling both exhausted
and exhilarated. As Brendan MacFarlane commented at the end of it all,
Its like a trawl through the sea of creativity.
First, a big thank you to the jury. All of the members brought their own
fields of knowledge to the table, from product design (Philippe Malouin)
and interior design (Anwar Mekhayech) to architecture (Winka Dubbeldam
and MacFarlane) and landscape architecture (Janet Rosenberg). Nineteen
major award winners have been chosen, along with 47 finalists. Two new
categories have also emerged: the Social Good Award and the Environmental Leadership Award, both of which recognize projects that have
spearheaded new frontiers for positive change.
Collectively, the awards encompass an uncompromising breadth of
talent and diversity. In the Architecture category alone, the winners include
a state-of-the-art design school in Melbourne, and a community centre
in Bangladesh made of bricks and bamboo. In the Design category, the
products range from a smartly engineered task chair with no visible levers
to a line of glass tiles handcrafted from crushed TV screens. What all of
the winners and finalists share is that wow factor, often expressed on jury
day with such words as stunning, fantastic, ingenious, and why didnt
I think of that? Congratulations to this years AZAward winners and merit
award honourees. You keep reminding us how great design can inspire,
uplift and awe.

beauty in
the beast

PHOTOs by nic lehoux

In an age of signature

museum buildings that

resemble large-scale sculptures, the new Whitney
Museum of American Art is an anomaly. Designed
by Renzo Piano, it rises as a hulking mass at the
southern tip of the bustling High Line Park, where
Manhattans Meatpacking District meets the
Hudson River. From the outside, its no jewel. The
20,500-square-metre, nine-storey structure, which
cost US$422million, has been compared to a
hospital, a factory, a power plant and an oceangoing freighter.
But stepping inside feels like cracking open a
geode, as the tough exterior gives way to a welcoming environment of unexpected beauty. When
you approach from Gansevoort Street, as most
visitors will, the base of the building peels upward
to reveal an expansive glass-walled lobby. From
there, four elevators with interiors by artist
Richard Artschwager and an intimate winding
staircase lead to the column-free main galleries,
starting on the fifth floor. Levels 5 through 8 each
have outdoor sculpture terraces overlooking the
High Line, holdout meatpacking operations, and
skyscrapers to the northeast, bringing the museum
into close conversation with its surroundings.
Over the years, Piano has proven adept at buildings of all scales and styles: sculptural icons like the
California Academy of Sciences in SanFrancisco;
surgical expansions at sensitive architectural sites,
like LeCorbusiers Notre Dame de Haut chapel in
Ronchamp, France; and industrial-inspired structures like the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The Whitney,
with its imposing exterior of grey-blue metal panels,
glass and concrete, clearly channels the latter.
It also pays respect to the museums former
home on Manhattans Upper East Side a brutalist,
granite-clad behemoth designed in 1966 by Marcel
Breuer, which shocked many of its neighbours
at the time but has since been acknowledged as a
masterpiece. The Whitney moved to its new site
after 20 years of ill-fated expansion proposals (it is
now leased to the Metropolitan Museum of Art).
In many ways, the stout new structure recalls
the spirit of Breuers design, even reinterpreting
some of the details, such as gridded ceilings in the
galleries. I dont call it the New Whitney, says Piano,
suggesting that his plan represents a continuation
rather than a break from the past. That was a big

cutting-edge couture and technology come together at the Maison Margiela

boutique, in Milans ber-chic Montenapoleone district. Now headed by the

impossibly eccentric John Galliano, the fashion house is famous for being
experimental with its interiors. The predominantly white flagship store opened
in April during Milan Design Week, and the results are dramatic. Draped like
a curtain over the elevator and covering the floors and countertops, a faceted
finish wraps effortlessly from surface to surface. But what is it?
Imagine a material as delicate and flexible as fabric but as rigid as wood.
Imagine it used as cladding inside and out, or to craft objects and furniture
without a single screw. It sounds futuristic, but its not. Wood-Skin is the brainchild of four young multimedia designers and architects from local creative
studio Mammafotogramma. Introduced in 2013, the tessellated, ultra-malleable
medium employs a unique layering technique. A synthetic textile or fibre such
as nylon mesh is sandwiched between sheets of MDF or plywood with glue. The
boards are then milled to a computer-generated pattern of polygonal tiles
in varying sizes.
Every line becomes a digital hinge, explains Wood-Skin co-founder Giulio

Masotti, which allows the sheets to bend into numerous geometric shapes.
Todays software makes it easy to design complex forms, he says. But when
it comes to producing large-scale objects, designers dont know how or they
make a base onto which thousands of laser-cut pieces must be attached by
hand, which is incredibly time consuming. Wood-Skin enables a 3D piece to be
created and then rendered flat for easy transport. Once on site, the sheets
can be manipulated like origami to recreate the original form. Masotti calls
this process unfolding.
Masotti and his team envision myriad applications for the process, even
beyond its lavish use at the Maison Margiela boutique. It can be applied to
aluminum, plasterboard, concrete or ceramic, he says. Meanwhile, they are
developing two other projects. The firstis a customizable series of tables,
lamps, bookshelves and chairsthat ships flat and can be put together without
tools. And, in collaboration with MIT, the team is working on a self-assembling
table that snaps into shape at the slightest push or pull. If the prototype is
anything to go by, it could certainly give Ikea a run for its money.

The founder of Beijings radical MAD

studio wants large-scale architecture
to embrace the landscape
BY john bentley mays

The massive Harbin Cultural Island,

soon to be completed in northern China,
emulates a mountainous landscape.

What kind of work do you hope to get now

that youre in North America?
Cultural and residential. Thats basically our
experience in China. We already have a mixeduse building in Beverly Hills, condos and retail
on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, and a new
museum underway in Chicago. Im interested in
cultural institutions, like the exhibition centre and
opera house weve done in Harbin, the northern
capital of China, or like the competition we just
won to design a concert hall in Beijing.

With the recent opening of a Los Angeles office,

Beijing architect Ma Yansong, 39, has at last
put down roots east of the Pacific. He does not,
however, arrive as a perfect stranger. Ma is
the quixotic, imaginative author of Absolute, the
foxily curvaceous residential towers that put
the Toronto suburb of Mississauga and him
on the architectural world map. Acurrent
rumour (which he wont discuss) suggests that
he will soon craft another high-rise in the area.
Be that as it may, Mas poetic meldings of
nature and modernism in his dramatic, landscape-scale Chinese projects make him an
artist worth watching especially now that he
has positioned himself to take on the North
American market from the inside.

P38_Q+A_JA15_F.indd 38

Your work frequently mimics nature the fluid

lines of the body, shapes in the landscape and
you have criticized contemporary skyscrapers
as barren, inhuman memorials to power and
capital. What ideas for tall buildings are you
bringing to North America?
The modern high-rise cannot satisfy contemporary needs. Its too much about privacy and not
enough about how people and nature can meet.
Right now, skyscrapers are containers. Its about
whats called maximum efficiency. In the future,
efficiency will be about how long people want to
stay in a building. We want green spaces courtyards, sky bridges, gardens where people can
meet. In one of our tall buildings, we created a
three-storey garden on every third floor. This is
very efficient, since the people use the gardens,
and so they become a community.

How do art and nature meet in your new

Harbin complex?
The idea was to build cultural buildings in a nature
park within a city. Our architecture comes from
this context. The opera house and museum look
like snowy hills, and they will indeed have snow on
them for half the year. They show how architecture
can blend into the land, and the landscape. We
designed a ramp on the buildings facade, so you
can reach the top, an open-air theatre, like climbing
a mountain. In good weather, the stage can be
opened to the outdoors, so that the beautiful park
and lake become the background of the shows.
Do you have a dream project you would like
to do on this side of the Pacific?
The one Im working on now in Chicago is my dream
project. Its filmmaker George Lucass Museum
of Narrative Art, storytelling art, on the lakeshore
campus with several other important museums.
We want to make the building very organic, and we
treat it as an environment. Chicago is a modern
city, its already there, so the design of the museum
has to bring that modern legacy forward. I am
curious about what future architecture should be.
Im about the cultural context. Thats what is
important to me. i-mad.com

london
The Bouroullecs, Hella Jongerius, Doshi Levien, Neri & Hu,
Shigeru Ban and Jaime Hayn these are just a few of the top
designers who have worked with Spanish footwear giant Camper.
The company has invested heavily in design, for its retail outposts
as well as its products and packaging; in the past year alone, it
has launched a Milan shop by Kengo Kuma, another in Stockholm
by Nendo, and a new line of shoes and coordinating bags by the
Campana brothers. That handcrafted collection was inspired by
Pelotas one of the brands best-known lines in a release timed to
coincide with the Design Museums celebration of the companys
40th anniversary. The exhibition takes a tour through the decades,
starting in 1975 when Lorenzo Flux Rossell transformed a
100-year-old family business into the brand we know today. With
recreated retail spaces, graphic design and, of course, shoes on
display, the show presents an impressive roster of designers, and
steps into the future to contemplate how technology may one day
affect footwear and the experience ofwalking. designmuseum.org

Urban Capital pioneers residential developments in untapped urban locations, often creating flourishing new neighbourhoods. Forward-thinking
in terms of architecture and interior design, it has also led the trend towards modern, clean-looking buildings that complement their urban
surroundings. From its first unit in 1996 to the over 5,500 it has since delivered or now has under development, Urban Capital has always
pushed the envelope in terms of urban location, high-end yet functional design and green living. Today Urban Capital is continuing to build on
that corporate DNA while exploring new markets that extend from Toronto west to Winnipeg and east to Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax.

and John Wardle with Arthur
Chang, John Chow, Meaghan
Dwyer, Stephen Georgalas and

the melbourne school of design is a riot
of architectural gestures, aesthetic quirks and
unusual material applications, all rolled in to one
powerful structure, realized by John Wardle
Architects with NADAAA of Boston. The collaborative proposal won an international competition
in 2009 that drew 133 entrants, and the project
reached completion last December, with the rare
achievement of finishing ahead of schedule.
What guides the buildings form, and in particular its unusual interior volumes, is the idea
that the school itself should be an educational
tool for the 2,000 students who inhabit it. The
exposed internal workings and the construction
site rawness act as an instructional living organ,
to be seen as much as understood. The school
is large, housing various types of study areas that
encourage collaboration, along with lecture
theatres, a library, a caf and two exhibition
spaces. It also offers new links to the existing
campus property, via the central Studio Hall.
The four-storey atrium serves as the main
congregation place and the buildings most jaw-
dropping feature, dominated by a prismatic,
plywood-clad construction that appears to hang
from the coffered timber roof, not quite touching
the ground floor. Three intimate meeting rooms
are contained within, making this muscular
addition a rather large gesture for such limited
functionality. One of its roles, though, is to bring
awareness to the theatre of architecture, along
with the contrast of weight and strength versus
lightness and suspension. One local critic noted
that some people might feel slightly uneasy within these small rooms, where the floor has a slight
bounce. Its a detail that the architects likely
understood as a mind-over-matter challenge, a
way for the building to seem alive underfoot.
Equally unnerving are the informal meeting
spaces built in along the atriums perimeter,
with vertiginous balcony views due to the almost
invisible woven mesh balustrade. The net-like
barrier stretches from the first floor to the ceiling and, we are assured, it is all perfectly safe.

John Wardle Architects, of Melbourne, Australia, has

garnered numerous awards for highly experimental
projects, from beachside houses to office towers.
NADAAA was co-founded in Boston by Nader Tehrani in

Community

Architects, Rotterdam Team:
Gerrit Schilder and Hill Scholte
with Dick van Gemerden
sustainability is not simply a factor in
how a project is built; it also determines how a
building serves the community and perpetuates
its own ideals. Dutch architects Gerrit Schilder
and Hill Scholte ensured that their design for
a community centre in northern Bangladesh
would meet these criteria when they decided on
the self-imposed restriction of sourcing all
materials and skilled trades for the project from
a radius of 25kilometres or less.
This meant using bamboo (an indigenous
resource considered an inferior construction
material in that part of the world) for the entire
roof, the support columns and the wall and
door cladding. It meant cheating slightly by
introducing to the locally crafted bricks a foreign
masonry pattern for stacking and arranging
called monk bond. In doing so, the firm managed
to reduce costs while maintaining a connection
to the regional trades. The 910square-metre
centre which houses a school, a bike shop, a
workshop, a meeting space and a bank of toilets
cost less than $60,000 to realize. Keeping the
project local meant using recycled steel and
corrugated panels, along with mango wood,
increasingly popular for its sustainable nature.
Instead of imposing their building on the
environment, the architects positioned it so
the surrounding vegetation and a nearby pond
would facilitate a cross-breeze to ventilate the
classrooms. They painted the interior walls
and window frames with naturally occurring
colours that the insect population avoids; blue,
for instance, is shunned by flies. And by sticking
close to home for the construction, they barely
left a carbon footprint.
In donating their services to the Pani Foun
dation, a charitable organization fighting poverty
in Bangladesh, Schilder and Scholte wanted the
process to stimulate further like-minded development; encourage more independent, locally
supported projects; and, eventually, render both
their contribution and the foundations work
redundant. Through this initiative, a self-sustaining community is emerging, one grounded
in the ideals of sustainability.

Haffenden
house
Location: Syracuse, New
YorK, U.S. Firm:PARA Project,
NewYork Team: Jon Lott with
Paul Knepley, Minh Lam, Hilary
Pinnington and Cristina Webb
Non-conformist is one way to describe
Haffenden House in Syracuse, New York a
beautiful misfit in a neighbourhood defined by
traditional clapboard and shingled houses.
Designed by PARA Project, it is a playful and
gutsy solution to a relatively conservative brief:
to design a self-contained writing studio and
library extension for two poets.
Rather than replicate the original barn-roofed
house, the New York firm, led by principal Jon
Lott, devised a three-storey cuboid structure to
sit alongside it, with a facade animated by rows
of tiny windows, each one slightly askew. The
105-square-metre addition both contrasts and
complements the main house while adding a
vivid new dimension to the streetscape. Though
the two sides connect via the second floor, the
extension is otherwise a separate building, with
a garage and a breezeway on the main level.
The exterior walls are swathed in a membrane
of translucent silicon-impregnated fabric, which
provides both privacy and light control. Inside,
the malleable textile is repurposed as a curtain
to cover a larger back window. This residential
application of a material more often used in
stadium roofing transforms the exterior by softening the buildings crisp lines.
As extensions go, Haffenden House is radical.
It delivers on the desired library and writing
studio, but it also embodies a profound sense
of freedom and luxury. The white floors in the
third-level reading room invite lounging anywhere, while a ceiling in gold leaf and a mirrored
finish on the bookshelves bounce light throughout the space. On the second storey, a sunken
tub at one end of the library takes reading in the
bath to a new level. The deep concrete soaker
doesnt interfere with the blank-canvas aesthetic
of the space, which is purposefully devoid of
furnishings and adornments. It gives the owners
the getaway they were after, a place to clear their
minds and think, right on their doorstep.

Nantes, located on the Loire River,

takes quality of life very seriously: the affable city

enjoys one of the highest standards of living in
France. So why not extend that ethos to its social
housing? Laetitia Antonini and Tom Darmon of
the firm Antonini Darmon, lent this positive
mindset to the Oiseau des les residences, which
put well-being at the forefront with large outdoor
spaces, beautiful private surroundings and
integrated community elements that define the
mixed-use development.
The all-white main building rises 10 storeys
to form a 45degree angle, reminiscent of a boat
sail and clad in solar panels. Framed-in balconies
create a powerful geometric plan on the exterior,
a hallmark statement for the Paris firm. The grid
pattern is animated by a series of solid and open
blocks, and the building further comes to life as
residents open and close the full-height shutters
in perforated aluminum. From inside, chunky
supports and privacy walls frame views to
the outdoors. Internally, the complex is divided
into individual houses, duplexes and standard
flats, options designed to accommodate different
lifestyles, for both single dwellers and families
with children.
At street level, the residence appears to sit atop
an extended bank of garages and such public amenities as shops, open spaces and patios. Sculpturally
clad in natural timber, the ground-level structure
looks as though it is lifting the building right off
the street. Repetition of the vertical wood slats
and an undulating roofline help to soften the
presence of the angled white tower, which feels
simple, warm and approachable.
Antonini Darmons commitment to sustainability and the use of affordable yet beautiful
materials has set a new standard for social
housing, one that benefits the inhabitants and
the larger community.
Founded in Paris in 2006 by Laetitia Antonini and Tom
Darmon, Antonini Darmon strives to build better, faster,
cheaper. The firm focuses on creative, sustainable
projects that transcend established norms.

Hylozoism, the belief that all things are

imbued with life, goes back to pre-Socratic
philosophers, who proposed metaphysical theories about the inherently animate nature of air,
water and magnets, among other things. Skip
forward a couple of millennia, and the material
world has been revivified, only this time through
technology. With the advent of smart devices
and the Internet of Things, the future has much
in common with those ancient beliefs; however,
everything we build for tomorrow will not only
be alive, but also intelligent. Toronto architect
Philip Beesley is a leading progenitor of responsive architecture, and his creation, Epiphyte
Chamber, on display last year at Seouls Museum
of Modern and Contemporary Art, provides a
glimpse into the shape of things to come.
Any description of his near-living environment starts with mechanics servos, sensors
and microprocessors before inevitably shifting
into the biological terminology of glands and
pores. The assemblage of thousands of individual
components reflects lifes complexity as it strives
to simulate, on a magnified scale, a basic level
of vitality. Beesleys masses of translucent cells
resemble clusters of microscopic phytoplankton
made gigantic. Touching the fibrous whiskers
that line the hanging tendrils elicits quasi-organic
reactions that echo through the automated
organism. It works through hundreds of simple
responses to generate an enveloping experience
of connectivity instigated by human presence.
Contemporary research into artificial intelligence is not simply in the pursuit of super-smart
computers: it looks to primitive models of lifelike
behaviour to replicate and interact with. The
Epiphyte Chamber mimics sentience while speculating on the potential of our built environment
to become living organism. In an uncanny way, it
uses advanced technology and digitally fabricated
parts to bring us back to nature and ourselves.

Staffed with artists, scientists, architects and engineers,

intelligent sculptural environments. Beesley recently collaborated with Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen on a line of

I believe in kindness, remarked the late

June Callwood during her last televised interview, in 2007. Soon after, those words became
the sonic blueprint for a park in Torontos
central waterfront district, dedicated to her
legacy as one of Canadas leading journalists
and social activists.
Designed by Toronto firm gh3, the park sits on
a wedge-shaped 0.5-hectare parcel of land surrounded by a burgeoning neighbourhood of glass
condominiums, and a lakeside promenade that is
one of the citys biggest tourist draws.
A waveform sampled from Callwoods voice as
she spoke those famous last words was used to
map out the paths along the parks pink granite
planks, and to carve out openings throughout
a grove of urban forest. At one corner is the
vibrant pink Puzzle Garden, clad in a thermal
plastic vulcanized rubber, a permeable surface
material made from reconstituted granules of
recycled rubber. The bench sculpture, which
gh3 describes as a crawlable, modern answer
to the conversation pit, provides places to sit
and talk and risers for kids to clamber on. The

Maze is formed by snaking rows of beech hedges,

and at the centre is the Pink Field, an activity
area framed by red oaks and covered with more
springy pink TPV surfacing. In all, more than 300
trees have been planted, 89 of which are flowering crabapples (Callwood loved pink).
Raised pavers at the southernmost end form
an urbanized version of a classic wetland, with a
shallow pool in a continuous fill-and-drain cycle
during the summer months. At night, light posts
by Louis Poulsen, with branch-like lattice detailing, illuminate the park. Callwoods life and spirit
are further embodied in a permanent acoustic
installation by Steve Bates and Douglas Moffat
of Montreal: sensors aimed at the sky turn the
shifting cloud coverage into an orchestration of
sound across the park.
Founded in Toronto in 2005, gh3 has earned accolades
for both its urban landscape design and its minimalist
architectural aesthetic. The studios portfolio includes
such statement-making public buildings as the circular
washroom pavilion in Borden Park, in Edmonton, which is
clad entirely in mirrors. g h3.ca

Now that the cubicle wall has fallen,

replaced by more loosely defined work environments where cafs double as boardrooms,
contract furniture has undergone a seismic shift
as well. Kinesit by Arper, launched last year at
Orgatec in Cologne, Germany, responds to the
new office terrain by turning the task chair into
what looks like an ordinary seat. Observing how
todays best technological innovations are integrated, intuitive and invisible, the design team,
Lievore Altherr Molina of Spain, decided to
invest in its own soft-tech thinking by sculpting
the mechanisms and command levers right into
the seats profile. What is most remarkable about
Kinesit cannot be seen, because its not there:
no complicated levers, spring-loaded appendages
or protruding knobs. The exoskeletal backrest
has also vanished.
The polished aluminum frame is embedded
with an automatic tension mechanism, meaning
that the seat and backrest respond in sync with
the users weight and pressure. Users experience
continuous reclining movement up to 18degrees,
and the seat breathes by up to 15millimetres to
improve stability and circulation. Meanwhile,
the backrest locks into three reclining positions,
every nine degrees, and the armrests are stripped
away, leaving a modest but supportive L.
Despite its outward simplicity, Kinesit meets
performance norms, and it even fulfills safety
regulations for workplace seating, including the
European requirement that all desk chairs have
an adjustable lumbar support. By tidying up the
task chair and giving it impressive versatility,
Kinesit is going places, as a valued contributor
and a better team player.

like a master yogi, Grip uses its centre of

gravity to sink into a grounded, statuesque pose.

The movement reveals a new kind of built-in
flexibility for the table, which strengthens and
stabilizes as more weight is put on it. Designed
by architect Troels Grum-Schwensen of
Copenhagen for Randers + Radius, the three
components assemble almost effortlessly into a
free-standing piece. Each set of cast aluminum
legs operates like a pair of pliers that pry open,
then tighten around a central extruded beam.
No tool needed.
This structure allows for the table to take on
various configurations. Users have the freedom
to space the legs anywhere along the beam
span, and to change their positioning on the spot.
While the various tops come in a fixed width
of 80centimetres, the table can extend to an
infinite length, only requiring a set of legs every
three metres.
Flexibility is an appealing feature for any
work environment prone to change, especially
start-ups that can mushroom overnight, and
that require space for hot desking rather than
enclosed offices. Given Grips universal nature,
its surprising that it wasnt invented sooner.
Had Grum-Schwensen come up with the design
sooner, perhaps children would draw tables
differently today.

BY reversing the usual roles assigned to

diffusers and other components, where the wiring

is primary and explicitly decorative, Wireflow
has cracked open a new topology, part drawing,
part sculpture and part lamp. This groundbreaking series of pendants and chandeliers, each
handcrafted in Barcelona by lamp maker Vibia,
raises several visual tensions between presence
and absence, transparency and luminosity.
According to designer Arik Levy, who debuted the
series in 2013, Wireflow manages to fill a room
with a special presence yet seem weightless and
unobtrusive.
Inspired by his own rudimentary drawings of
chandeliers, Levy decided to recreate them as
convincingly as possible as three-dimensional
objects. One of the biggest challenges was to
keep the electrical wiring as thin as a pencil line.
Three-watt LED units encased in pressed glass
diffusers proved to be the perfect solution, since

the LED capsules require only a very thin diameter of copper wire to conduct a current.
The volumetric shape can be custom or prt-porter, as each wire is strung onto as many
square and hexagonal metal frames as desired,
and the fixture is ridiculously easy to install.
The only variable with the off-the-shelf models
is the length of the cords.
Now based in Paris, Arik Levy has produced furniture and
lighting for some of the biggest international brands,
including E15, Desalto, Living Divani and Molteni&C.

Licht, bonn and berlin, Germany,

team: Maik Czarniak, Andreas

Schulz and Volker Staab
The five conjoined buildings that together
make up the Art Museum Ahrenshoop are a
contemporary translation of the thatch-roofed
houses found in the tiny northern German town.
Designed by Staab Architekten of Berlin, the
steeply pitched rooftops and exterior walls are
also dramatically clad in irregularly bevelled
bronze panels, which from a distance bear a
striking resemblance to hatching. Internally,
however, the backdrop for the artworks housed
within is crisp white, illuminated day and night
by diffuse light that emanates from skylights
at the peak of the gallerys ceiling.
Principal Volker Staab, working with Berlin
lighting studio Licht Kunst Licht, prioritized
shadow-free lighting in the design. To achieve
a constant level of light, which bathes the
collection of some 500 works by local artists,
the collaborating teams employed two modes
of lighting. During the day, natural light filters
through a series of prisms integrated into a
skylight that runs from end to end in each
gallery space. Sunlight bounces off the sloping
ceilings to evenly distribute illumination. In
the evening, LED fixtures mounted around the
perimeter of each skylight cast bright light onto
the prisms, which once again deflect it evenly
into the galleries.
The artificial light can be controlled by activating one or two lamps per luminaire, or simply
by dimming. In addition, the design incorporates
a three-phase track, mounted just below the
luminaires, to accommodate LED projectors for
accent lighting. The central lounge/porch and
store are lit with warm atmospheric downlights;
while the entrance is brightened by low-voltage
halogen lamps. The result is a subtle yet masterful
strategy that complements the architecture and
brings the artworks to life.

crt glass
tiles
designer:Paul Burns
manufacturer: fireclay tile,
San francisco
Crowd sourcing has launched some ingenious products over the years. One example is
CRT Glass tiles, made from old television sets
and computer monitors, when cathode ray tube
technology reigned. With advances in liquid
crystal displays over the past decade, CRTs have
drifted into oblivion except that the harmful
waste they leave behind is difficult to dispose
of. For the most part, the material is exported,
dumped into landfills, or stored in warehouses,
where it sits waiting for recycling methods to
develop. Paul Burns, a lifelong ceramicist who
runs Fireclay Tile in San Francisco, set out to
turn the grey glass into something useful. He
spent years working out a process in which the
top layer of the screen is shaved off, demagnet
ized, crushed into particles tiny enough to be
melted, then handcrafted into brilliant, luminescent tiles with soft, pillowed edges.
In 2013, he embarked on a Kickstarter
campaign and raised over US$16,000, enough
to launch the tiles on the market and recycle
an average of 13 devices into every 4.6square
metres of product surface. While that may be a
drop in the bucket compared with the available
raw material (there is some 390,000 cubic tons
of CRT glass in the U.S. alone), Burns is proving
that end users exist for even products derived
from toxic man-made materials.
Available in three sizes including 1.25inch rounds, ideal for corners and curves the
tiles are stain- and frostproof, so they can be
used indoors and out, or as flooring in a matte
finish. For now, CRT Glass tiles are sold in their
natural light grey, but Burns is experimenting
with other hues.

casa G
Location: Cefal, Sicily, Italy
Firm: Francesco Librizzi
Studio, Milan Team: Francesco
Librizzi with Dilara Guneri,
Piergiorgio Italiano
AND Marianna Piscitello
at the heart of this modestly sized two-

storey residence in northern Sicily, a staircase

appears to float on a breath of air, similar to the
ones that regularly pass through seaside cities
like Cefal. Framed by an artful grid of scaffolding
made of 14millimetre-thick blackened iron rods
with oak treads, the stairway winds its way up
to a rooftop terrace overlooking the Tyrrhenian
Sea. The architect, Francesco Librizzi of Milan,
added solid wooden boxes that act as platforms,
to encourage those ascending to pause en route
and enjoy their journey to the top.
Casa G is the third house to be transformed by
one of Librizzis sculptural staircases. Each tread
is firmly fixed within the metal framework, and
as a whole it connects with but never overwhelms
the simplicity of the four-bedroom house, once
owned by a fisherman. The new owner, who
commissioned the renovation in 2014, is a journalist for the Italian newspaper LaRepubblica.
To support the vertical load, the stairs are
affixed to the floor by a base shaped like one of
the hexagonal tiles that surround it. Made by
local master ceramicists, they unify the first floor
by alternating colour and pattern as they flow
through the arched doorways of each room. A
palette of coral, golden yellow, slate and cerulean
reflects the shades of light that flood the interior
throughout the day.
Librizzi is well aware of the poetic indulgences
he has taken within this jewel-like space. When
designing in such a scenically arresting locale, he
says, you shouldnt resist being inspired by the
stereotypes of the area, or by the clichs of great
seas and white sands. There is only one possible
strategy when offered such great luxury, he
observes. Totally abandon resistance. We are
glad he did.
Based in Milan, Francesco Librizzi founded his studio
in 2005, developing projects in architecture, interiors,
exhibition design and product design. For the 2010
Venice Biennale of Architecture, he collaborated with
Salottobuono as an exhibition designer for the Italian
pavilion. francescolibrizzi.com

for a retail brand, a phenomenal interior

can be a game changer. That is certainly the case

at Galleria Luxury Hall West in Seoul, where
a bold facelift by Burdifilek proved to be the
secret weapon that crushed the competition.
In most South Korean malls, the shop-in-shop
experience, where each brand occupies its own
sovereign turf, still prevails. Beyond an LEDilluminated facade by Ben van Berkel, Galleria
Luxury Hall West has instead collapsed all
barriers to tailor an open plan environment akin
to a department store, where customers browse
various labels all at once. Fashion houses, you
might think, would balk at this arrangement.
But with sales up by over 33percent, business is
booming all because of the bright new interior.
With a sharp eye on the details, Burdifilek
curated a singular brand identity that unifies
9,926square metres and four levels, including
mens and womens departments and a lifestyle
shop. Elemental racks in blackened steel showcase frocks by Gareth Pugh and Kenzo, while
glass-topped wooden tables display a single Issey
Miyake purse, say, or a pair of Stuart Weitzman
pumps. Sculptural feats of micro-architecture,
such as the black egg halves that house the
womens change rooms behindmirrored doors,
create focal points and break up the sprawling
layout. More faceted forms appear on the mens
level, where the shoes are displayed on illuminated shelves carved from two boulder-like
blocks. On every surprise-filled floor, minimalist
lighting keeps the focus on the carefully selected
clothing, accessories and homewares. Retailers,
take note: this is how interior design can cloak
your brand in major prestige.

inspired by the domes that cap the majestic

Roman baths, this masterful vision for a thermal
spa bridges past and future an aim that goes
hand in hand with the projects site. Liepja,
perched between the Baltic Sea and a lake in western Latvia, is known as the city where the wind
is born. When excavations uncovered thermal
springs with high levels of wellness-inducing
minerals and salts, the bustling city hosted a
competition for a pool park that would revive
its nature-worshipping past.
American architect Steven Christensen
accepted the challenge of taking the dome form
to unprecedented heights. Once a jewel of
Renaissance architecture, domes developed
fascist overtones in the 20th century, and no
amount of postmodern lightheartedness
could rehabilitate them back into fashion. In
Christensens vision for the public baths, a
proliferation of domes democratizes the architectural element and diffuses its symbolic
power, transforming it into a whimsical motif.

Recalling a block of Swiss cheese, the horizontal

volume is carved into a series of spheres. At the
buildings core, there are no vertical or horizontal
lines; all of the curving surfaces merge to form
a modern twist on the grotto. On four floors,
Christensen has imagined hotel rooms hugging
the periphery, while spa amenities take precedence. The first level alone features three types of
Roman baths (a frigidarium, a tepidarium and a
caldarium), as well as a childrens pool. The pice
de rsistance is the third-floor outdoor pool, suspended in a hemisphere with a glassed-in view of
the surroundings. This antechamber embodies
the entire plans visionary audacity.
Steven Christensen worked with architect Preston Scott
Cohen and at CORE in Washington, D.C., before starting
his own firm in Santa Monica, California. With an
interest in how design can be experienced on multiple
intellectual and perceptual levels, he has designed
paradigm-shifting projects, including the multi-planar
Heptagon House on the Oregon coast. ssca.com

A TIDY SQUARE BOX is relatively easy to execute,

architecturally speaking; its the seemingly

random that tests ones mettle. While software
is making the design side easier, fabrication
of different components with unusual angles
continues to pose difficulties. Architecture
Challenge, an annual workshop conducted by
the University of Applied Arts Vienna, brought
together students and experts to explore new
frontiers in digital fabrication, culminating in
a full-scale structure. The medium of choice:
expanding polyurethane foam, combined with
gypsum, water and a hardener to produce a
material similar to pizza dough, which then stiffens into a rigid substance akin to Styrofoam.
Using three ABB industrial robots, the team
stretched the gooey concoction into unusual Y
forms and waited for them to set. Because the
system allows for any shape to be made, it can
produce unique joints without wasting materials.
This is accomplished by simply positioning the
robots in various formations and letting the
material find its Gaudesque shape organically.
While each joint is distinct, they are hardly
random. Before fabrication began, the team
workshopped a digital design using Grasshopper
plug-ins such as HAL (for robotic programming)
and Karamba (3D printing) and the genetic
algorithm Galapagos to determine each connectors load-bearing capacity. To demonstrate the
joinery, the students linked the finished forms
with PVC tubes to create a branching lattice that
they installed in the universitys atrium.
Practical applications remain far off, but a
lightweight, infinitely adaptable system has many
advantages, since it can produce joinery tospec
on site. Made-to-order structural components
would be ideal for use in deep caves, or even in
space anywhere that materials and specialized
equipment are difficult or costly to transport in.

The Institute of Architecture at the University of

Applied Arts Vienna is a leader in material exploration
and parametric design. Each year, assistant professor
Andrei Gheorghe leads the 10-day Architecture
Challenge in which students propose solutions to
an architectural problem and work as a team to
realize one of them. ioa.at

A recent graduate of the masters of architecture program at SCI-Arc, Danny Jens Karas
has a vision for how the buildings of the future
could look, and how they might be built. Its the
stuff of science fiction. He is a masterful artist,
rendering prototypes with his team that are fully
interpreted 3D models, and videos that show
Mad Max-ian structural components assembled
and disassembled in mid-air. Our jury was struck
silent watching the video of M&N, a wildly imagin
ative proposal for a fire station in San Francisco
in which floors, walls and ramps majestically
swim in a sea of black before locking into place,
not unlike a Transformer.
As otherworldly as Karass renderings seem,
his concepts are based on a plausible theory of
how they might be realized someday. M&N stems
from the idea of duplication without repetition.
In other words, by taking a simple element and
treating it as though it has its own genealogy,
that form can evolve from one generation to the

next, changing shape with each iteration yet

maintaining a connection, a kind of visual lineage
that harmonizes one element, M, to its nearest
cousin, N. This allows structures to grow like
beanstalks, twisting and warping as they cultivate.
Karas further proposes that his fire station
would have three outer layers, with perforated
metal and white polycarbonate panels sandwiching a skeletal beam system strong enough to
support a multi-level interior without the need
for columns. A concrete base would reach to the
ocean bedrock for support, creating the illusion
that this massive hulk, which houses a dozen or
so fire trucks and a rooftop helipad, is buoyant
enough to float, like a mighty battleship tethered
to the edge of a pier.

of architecture project with thesis adviser Hernan Diaz

we may take plumbing for granted, but
15percent of the global population still lives
without toilets. In Vietnam, up to 88percent of

rural schools have no sewage facilities. Thats

what makes Toigetation such a life-changing
accomplishment. Sited on a hillside in northern
Vietnam, the washroom which contains
showers, toilets, urinals and washbasins was
constructed to serve 485 children from the
nearby Son Lap School in Cao Bang province.
H&P Architects, a firm based in Hanoi and
run by principals Don Thanh H and Tran
Ngoc Phuong, began work on Toigetation with
three objectives in mind: quick construction,
cost effectiveness, and a design that could easily
be reproduced at other schools. Remarkably,
Toigetation was built in three weeks for just
US$3,000. The simple brick structure is shaded
on all sides by bamboo trellises that reach from
the ground to the roof. Vegetation climbs up the
struts to provide shade and privacy, and also
to look good, as an unobtrusive addition to the
treed setting.
Urinals and washbasins have been made out
of repurposed sewer pipes, and waste water and
rainwater are filtered and reused to maintain
the garden. With solar panels on the corrugated
sheet metal roof, the facility is lit up at night.
Whats also remarkable about Toigetation is
how it was built. H&P had the students, teachers
and neighbours pitch in with construction as a
way to pass on the skills needed to build more
units, and to introduce children to the guiding
principles of good design.

with its brilliant white cladding and

stilt-like legs, the Fogo Island Inn has an air of
confidence, rising as it does at the windswept
edge of the Atlantic Ocean. It represents the sort
of confidence the small island hasnt known for
a long time, not since the collapse of the cod fishery decades ago. Now, owing to the work of the
Shorefast Foundation and its president,
Zita Cobb (who grew up on the island), the community of fewer than 3,000 is experiencing a
cultural and economic renaissance.
Shorefast has spearheaded various initiatives aimed at revitalizing the island, including
a residency program where artists from around
the globe experience the islands dramatic
natural conditions, living in one of four bunkies
designed by Norwegian architect Todd Saunders.
But the Fogo Island Inn, also designed by
Saunders, is the foundations greatest achievement thus far, attracting tourists from everywhere to its 29 rooms. Built using local labour

and Newfoundland timber, the inn is staffed by

islanders, most of the furniture was crafted there
and its profits are funnelled into the community.
As bold a statement as the inn makes, it doesnt
look out of place. The architecture references the
local vernacular by situating the main entrance
at the rear, a common detail of traditional
Newfoundland homes; and those slightly skewed
stilts recall a typical Fogo way of building to
withstand the rising tides. Eco-friendly features
have been sensitively worked in, with rainwater
collected for toilets and sinks, a wood-burning
boiler for heat, and solar panels on the rooftop.
But the conservation efforts run deeper for
Fogo Islanders, who can now envision a brighter
future for their far-flung corner of the earth.

IN AN AGE WHEN MELTING ICE caps have

become inevitable, it is both tragic and necessary
that efforts are underway, at least in theory, to
preserve climatic records of the past hundreds
of millennia. Sofia Ceylan, Katharina Laekamp
and Leonie Otten, architecture students at the
Technical University of Berlin, decided to site
their concept for preserving ice cores in the
North, intuitively grasping the irony of building
an archive in the very place where the substance
they hoped to preserve is quickly disappearing.
For thousands of years, annual snowfalls in
parts of the world where there is no such thing
as runoff have been compressed like fossils.
Snowflakes are packed down until they turn to
ice. Afterward, like digging into the recesses of
a frost-clogged freezer, drilling through the
strata becomes a journey through time. The
resulting ice cores can tell stories of epochal
changes in temperature and atmospheric gases.
Memory of the Arctic, then, is an archive of
that history, built to maintain the permanence
of permafrost; to do so, it would have to be a
massive refrigerator. Instead of keeping out the
cold, the archive draws it in with a coolant piped

through rods that perforate the cylinder at the

heart of the structure, located many metres
underground. Thus, what the designers refer to
as a frozen soil corpse guarantees the security
of the encased ice cores.
Advent Fjord, located on the island of Spitz
bergen in the north of Norway, is the proposed
site for this frigid library. While a circular
structure sits above ground to mark the location,
standing as an emblem for the project, the ice
core library is contained within a shaft excavated
through the underlying sandstone via drilling
and explosives. Another irony to this project: the
out of sight, out of mind blindness that led
to global warming in the first place will be
perpetuated in the depths of this isolated haven,
where the fragile remnants of the storms that
came before us will remain.
Sofia Ceylan, Katharina Laekamp and Leonie Otten
collaborated on Memory of the Arctic while studying
for their masters degrees at the Technical University
of Berlin. The project was also named a finalist for
the A+ Award for best student work.

Entrepreneur Zita Cobb has described her

fellow Newfoundlanders as predisposed to
profound hospitality. So it made sense to
develop an inn with a contemporary design

42 Institution of
Un-Natural Fictions

Transposing fiction on top of fact to create

original and credible trains of thought is
the premise behind this striking concept.
Referencing Londons Natural History
Museum as its vault of facts, it imagines
a parasitic structure elevated above and
descending into the museum. Apertures
encourage a pataphysical approach to
natural history, reaching beyond the conventional metaphysical model. Fanned vaults

This concept for a museum of underwater

antiquities would connect people with Greek
shipping, ancient and modern, in two ways.
As a museum, laboratory and archive, it tells
of the ancient shipwrecks around Greece
via stunning displays and in-depth study.
Speaking to the more recent history of local
shipping, in decline since the 1990s, the site
occupies a disused silo in Piraeuss port of
Kantharos. This ideal location introduces visitors to the waterfront and its seafaring past.

each year, we hear rumblings that Milan Design Week has grown too big, its

focus too market driven, that there is more hype than good design. Some of
that is true. Besides the fair itself, which attracted over 2,000 exhibitors and
some 310,000 visitors this year, hundreds of off-site displays fill spaces in
various city districts. Its a foot-blistering event, but I subscribe to the Marcel
Wanders school of thought: that Milan is one giant celebration, intended to
wear you down while getting your creative juices flowing. Wanders, creative
director of Moooi, is one of the biggest names connected to Milan Design
Week. Off site, his brand filled a warehouse with stunning furniture vignettes,
this year highlighting the launch of Moooi Carpets, a line of jaw-droppingly
beautiful rugs that employ state-of-the-art printing technology.
At the Rho fairgrounds, many booths were equally theatrical. Kartell, for
instance, lined its walls with emerald and white marbleized laminate, meant

100 jul aug 2015

P100-105_Milan_JA15_F.indd 100

to emulate the retro decor of a bourgeois home, circa 1960s. Tacchinis booth
was drenched in tangerines, reds and mossy greens. The most consistent
colour in upholstery, one that popped up everywhere, was dusty rose, a
hue that also ruled last year. At the Cappellini booth, chief designer Giulio
Cappellini used multi-tiered cakes in similar pastel tones as visual props.
The Italian brand, however, showcased more of a pop aesthetic overall, especially with Paola Navones Panda collection of cartoonish furniture pieces
(including a giant panda) in poppy red, white, black, and die-cast aluminum.
One of the strongest collections was at the Glas Italia booth, where such
stars as Philippe Starck, the Bouroullec brothers and Patricia Urquiola crafted
exquisite all-glass furnishings, many of them in the same range of pinks,
yellows and oranges. There may have been too many products angling for
attention in Milan, but great design still finds a way to shine through.

circus acts

During Milan design week, the entire city embraces the event. its hard to
escape the dreaded fear of missing out by elizabeth pagliacolo
warning: milans off-site program may induce an acute case of FOMO. Did you
catch Tom Dixons band performing at Designjunction? Did you get your turn
on Caesarstones swing set in a palazzo once owned by Napoleon Bonaparte?
Even if you couldnt conquer every event, with almost 400 design happenings
around the city, everyone came away with a magical experience or 10.
One inspired installation, staged in the courtyard of Viabizzuno, invited
guests to walk through seven internally connected weathered steel silos. Within,
one fantastic lighting scenario after another played out, including Cubo Doccio
shower heads raining down illuminated water. Viabizzuno also showcased a
chic assortment of interchangeable fittings for the N55 light, by such architectdesigners as Kengo Kuma and Peter Zumthor. The eco-innovative unit comes
with an electrical housing that can be shipped back to the company at the end of
its useful life, to be refurbished and replaced.
In the San Gregorio district, British designer Lee Broom transformed a row
of disused shops into a solo exhibit, called the Department Store, complete
with Instagrammable window displays worthy of a Mad Men set. Inside, Broom
presented a retro-mod range of furniture and lighting, from his Acid Marble
tables to the stylish Hoop chairs, each set against grey backdrops.
One of the most magnificent installations contrasted strikingly modern design
within a 16th-century cloister. Mindcraft, a group exhibit devoted to Danish
artisanship, paved the inner courtyard in a mirrored floor and filled it with giant
bird cages. The exotica captured inside, including Jakob Wagners Point of
View, a bench in 29 acrylic slices that morph from blue to red, was reflected to
wondrous effect, together with the hundreds of observers passing through.

Implicit in every work of

architecture are the

married concepts of time and space. It is difficult,
though, to make such abstract qualities visible
in a manner that is not kitschy or over the top. The
challenge to articulate these ephemeral concepts
was central to Phyd Arquitecturas retrofit of an
industrial building into a bold new space, envisioned
by the architects as a time-capturing machine.
The Renova factory complex in Almonda,
Portugal, is the site of this shop and showcase for
the products manufactured by the European
company (best known for inventing coloured toilet
paper). Phyd split an existing structure into two,
leaving a courtyard void to separate the showroom
from a small informal theatre.
Full-height windows and a glass door flank either
end of the storefront, while a large circular aperture adorns the back wall of the theatre. Several
interventions play up the time machine metaphor.
Unfinished steel cladding, a shooting line of interior
tube lighting, and the astral pattern of portholes in
the asymmetric gabled roof all evoke the sense
that the building is hurtling through time and space.
A opening on the south elevation that resembles
a cargo door features shutters in the same steel as
the exterior cladding.
The industrial materials, heightened by the
bright orange of the interior, emphasize the contrast between light and shadow and exaggerate
reflections of the sunlight that streams through
the skylights. The architects use of time as a
conceptual point of departure, manifested through
the manipulation of light via a series of simple
design decisions, has indeed rendered the Renova
Store and Theatre a machine one that not only
captures the essence of time, but is also a vessel
that enables new temporal conditions to be
experienced. phydarquitectura.com

like a traditional double-hung wooden window, until it

opens with its patent-pending hinge mechanism. Located
at the middle rail, the component allows the window to
fold inward and slide up on hidden tracks. Recommended
for residential and light commercial applications, it can
be crafted in a variety of wood species, such as mahogany,
white oak, Douglas fir or Spanish cedar.

Jeld-Wen Siteline is a new collection of windows and

patio doors constructed from AuraLast, a wood engineered

through a proprietary vacuum pressure process where
protective additives are injected into a core of natural
pine. The resulting material is highly resistant to rot, water
saturation and termites. Backed by a limited lifetime
warranty, they come standard with LoE366 glass to block
infrared rays, increase thermal efficiency and meet 2016

Living on the edge

Britains varied coastline is the ultimate border, a
line often literally drawn in sand, at once beautiful
and harsh. Lincolnshires North Sea strand is an
unbroken 80 kilometres of sand dunes fronting salt
marshes, lagoons and wet grasslands that support
major bird migrations. And boy, does the wind blow.
So much so, these coastal waters host one of the
worlds largest offshore wind farms.
The Wind Tower, by London architects Rhys
Cannon and Matthew Springett, responds to this
extreme environment as part of Structures on the
Edge, a publicly funded project that has commissioned several seaside installations, including a

salt lick observation deck and a whimsical cloudwatching platform. Signalling the idea of being on
the edge, the angular sky-blue tower juts upward
from a berm that protects the low-lying land from
the invasive sea.
On approach, a water view is deliberately denied.
But as a visitor steps inside, the added weight
tilts the yellow interior chamber forward to align
the inner and outer viewing slots. Revealed is a
focused seascape strip of water, beach, and windmills sprouting from the brine. The shift gently
pulls the viewer forward, echoing the sensation of
leaning into the wind as a child, with the prevailing

gale rushing in to envelop ones face and ears.

Additionally, the movement of the inner pod
creates a resonant gong sound, amplified by the
shape of the tower and suggesting the clang
of metal buoys.
Catherine the Great once observed, A great
wind is blowing, and that gives you either imagination or a headache. The Wind Tower resolutely
leans to the former.
Rhys Phillips grew up on Vancouver Island, searching for the best vantage point from which to enjoy
the wind and waves on stormy days.
