Computer
an electronic device designed to accept data, perform
instructions;
input devices, such as a keyboard and a mouse, through
which data and commands enter the computer;
memory that enables the computer to store programs and
data; and
output devices, such as printers and display screens, that
show the results after the computer has processed data.
History of Computers
Electrical Numerical Integrator and Calculator
ENIAC
First successful high speed Electronic Digital
Computer (EDC)
Used 1946 to 1955
Used 167 square meters of space
The vacuum tube, used up to this time in almost all the computers and
calculating machines, had been invented by American physicist Lee De
Forest in 1906.
Vacuum tubes were highly inefficient, required a great deal of space, and
needed to be replaced often.
Computers of the 1940s and 50s had 18,000 tubes in them and housing
all these tubes and cooling the rooms from the heat produced by 18,000
tubes was not cheap.
The transistor promised to solve all of these problems and it did so.
The main problem was that transistors, like other electronic
components, needed to be soldered together.
Mainframe to Personal
Computers
1960s saw large mainframe computers become much
more common in large industries and with the US
military and space program.
IBM PC - 1981
IBM-Intel-Microsoft joint venture
First wide-selling personal computer used in
business
Apple Computers
Founded 1977
Apple II released 1977 - widely used in schools
Macintosh (left) - released in 1984, Motorola 68000

Internet
1960 email developed for Mainframes
1969 Stanford research Institute in Santa Barbara to the University of Utah,
an early version of the Internet was born
Early 1990 Bulletin Board Systems Allows users to connect to a system and
communicate with the specific community
Convergence
Terminologies
Hardware:
device that is physically connected to the computer
or something that can be physically touched.
It is the physical part of a computer, including the
digital circuitry, as distinguished from the computer
software that executes within the hardware.
SOFTWARE:
general term used to describe a collection of
computer programs, procedures, and documentation
that perform some task on a computer system.
