Horace Albert Kersey was born July 21, 1870 in Pottowatomie County, Kansas. He was the third child born
to Martha Mariah Teeter and Robert Butler Kersey. Robert B. had a brother named Horace who died at age
14, thus the name was handed down to "Bert" as he was always known throughout his life. Bert's father was
thought to be a stone mason by trade but did mostly farming when raising the family. His father's health was
never good after the experiences he had as a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War. Bert's mother
was a teacher and taught at various schools in the county, including Westmoreland, Ks. Bert's older brother,
George, died at age twenty-five when Bert was age twenty-three and with their father not well this left Bert
the oldest son with more responsibility. Bert had one older sister and two younger brothers and one younger
sister. Bert and his brothers did farming at their own farm and often times worked for other farmers in the
area. They were a close knit family and always looked out for the welfare of one another. Bert met Rebecca
Jane Domeny at various school, church and county activities. They married on October 13, 1897.
Rebecca Domeny and Bert Kersey were married October 13, 1897 in Pottowatomie County Kansas. They
were married at Rebecca's parents home near the Broderick area. Their first home was on the Widow
Burgess place which is north of Ghoerings. Martha Emza was born there in September, 1898 and Fleda La
Vanche was born there in November, 1900. In the spring of 1901 Bert took his family and Becky's sister,
Alzira " Allie" Domeny, age 19 or just turned 20 at that time, and they went to Newkirk, Oklahoma by
covered wagon. Bert's uncle Albert had taken his family there years before where he died but his widow and
Bert's cousins were still living. The Oklahoma Land Runs and Lotteries were from 1889--1893. We think that
there was still unclaimed land and there was a chance for Bert to possibly homestead some land there and since
Bert was always looking for ways to improve life for his family and we assume that is why they made the trip.
Their son, Robert George, was born there in June of 1902. They returned by train to Pottowatomie Co.
Kansas in the fall of 1903.
After their return to Kansas, they lived with Becky and "Allie's" father, George W. Domeny and their
stepmother Elma, in the Broderick neighborhood close to the Mc Proud farm. Becky and Bert soon moved
their family to the Bain farm located between Grandpa Domeny's farm in Broderick and the County Poor
House. This is where Clara was born in May of 1904. They later moved northwest of Wamego to the Schuler
farm (near Ed Daylor's farm). They lived there for about seven years. It was here that Howard was born in
January, 1906; Agnes in January, 1908; Sarah in February, 1910; and Ruth in December, 1911. It was during
this time that several of the children attended school in District #82. This is where Clara started school and
she still remembers her teacher whose name was Kate Kahler. This was short-lived for Clara though because
they soon moved four miles north of St. George. Becky loved this place which had many fruit trees and since
Becky was a wonderful cook and with a large family to cook three meals a day for, the fruit must have been a
special treat for all. Now all of the children entered a new school and they lived there until Bert was elected
Sheriff for the first time in 1912.
Bert was elected Sheriffand they moved to Westmoreland in December, 1912. Bert held office from 1913 to
1916. Their first house was the Hick House where Esther was born in September, 1914. It was during these
years that they moved often as Bert did a lot of buying and selling of houses. He probably was known to do a
little horse trading in his younger days. Some of the houses that they lived in (some rented and some owned)
were the Cochrun stone house, Huckstadt house, Cree house, Plummer house (the Campbell house then) and
Bob Arnold house. During 1917 and 1918 they moved to a farm just south of Louisville where they lived
when Ruth started to school. Their last child was born while they lived there but the child did not live and is
buried in the family plot in Wamego, The marker reads "Baby Kersey". Bert was elected Sheriff again for
1919 and 1920. Emza had graduated from high school in Westmoreland in the year 1916 and started teaching
school soon thereafter. Fleda was allowed to remain in Louisville to live with her grandmother, Martha
Kersey, and her aunt Jesse Kersey Ferguson, so she could graduate from high school there, while the family
moved once again back to Westmoreland for Sheriff duty.
Bert opened a Ford Automobile Agency around the year 1921 in Westmoreland. This business included
automobiles and trucks as well as tractors. His son Robert was one of the mechanics along with Ralph
Hockett and his salesman was Bob Springstead. Bert was a member of the local and state draft board and
was successfully involved in many county and state official functions which made him well known and
respected. It was from the encouragement of these many friends and acquaintances that he decided to run for
the office of Kansas State Representative. In 1924, Bert was elected to the Kansas State Legislature from the
41st district where he served one term from 1925 to 1927. I believe it was at one of the first official State
functions that Becky and Bert were attending, on January 12, 1925, in Topeka when the garage burned down.
Clara and Agnes were getting breakfast that morning when they heard the fire bell ringing. When they looked
out the window and saw the smoke, Clara thought it looked like the garage was on fire. Clara was the
bookkeeper for her dad so she tore out of the house still in her slippers and no coat but she arrived in time to
save the books from the fire. Ernza called her folks at their hotel to tell them and Bert's first response was "
Was anyone hurt?". Fortunately no one was but there was very little to salvage. They did move what tools
and other things that they could to a new temporary location. Bert did not like the pressure put upon him by
the Ford Co. about the amount of merchandise he must buy in order to do business with them so he chose to
discontinue his relationship with the Ford Company. Bert eventually moved his garage to a permanent
location on main street where there had been a garage owned by the Zables ( this is the garage that Wayne
Grutzmacher, Ernza's husband owned later). It was here that Bert made a deal with the Hudson-Essex
company and he took on that dealership, however the business was never too lucrative as the Essex auto never
gained popularity. The family had an Essex, as the family car when they moved to Rossville in 1927.
Bert owned a garage in Rossville and they stayed there a year. Bert had been promised that if AI Smith were
to win the election for President in November of 1928 that he would be given a good job working for the
Government. AI Smith, who was of the Catholic religion was defeated badly by Herbert Hoover and this of
course dashed any dreams that Bert may have had to further himself in politics.
The family moved back to Westmoreland in late 1928, living first in a big two story house down by the creek,
close to the crossing that the Grutzmacher's often used to get to town. This house had been occupied at one
time by Mrs. Kate Hooven and her children. This was a temporary stop for the Kersey's, while waiting to
move into the house (Cree's) that they had bought from Clara and Fritz. Before too long though Bert and his
brother Ross, who's family was farming in Onaga made the decision to take their families and move to
California. Ruth, a graduate from Westmoreland High School and just seventeen, soon to be eighteen, was
teaching in Rossville and really hated to see her family leave. Sarah who was working at the courthouse for
Mrs. Hooven, decided to stay with her sister Clara and her husband Fritz. The older children, Ernza, Fleda,
Bob, Clara, and Howard also remained in Kansas. Bert and Rebecca in their Essex, along with daughters
Agnes and Esther left for California in October of 1929. Ross and Bessie (Hutchison) Kersey had four
children; Argell, Jessie, Willard and Ruby Elizabeth. Argell had remained in Kansas and when Ruth and Sarah
were free to go they all drove in Argell's Chevrolet (the girls each agreed to pay him twenty dollars for the
trip) to join their parents in Coronado, California.
The Kersey brothers, Bert and Ross found employment in various fields in the beginning. The girls started
work in San Diego. In those days the only access to Coronado was by ferry or a long drive around the south
bay on the silver-strand and through Imperial Beach, Otay, Chula Vista and National City in order to get to
San Diego. The girls worked at The Retail Credit Association and commuted by ferry each day. I think it cost
a Dickie each way. Eventually the girls moved out on their own to live in San Diego.
In 1934 or 1935 Bert and Rebecca moved to Chula Vista to be near many long time friends who had migrated
to that small town from Pottawatomie County, Kansas. The Buffington's, (Joe and Oda) the Laughlin's (Ted
and Mary) and the Perry's (Lillian and George) and many more fellow Kansans were in the area. This led to
many "Oldtimers Picnics", card games and gatherings for reminiscing about the "Good Old Days".
Bert became interested in real estate and went to work in the Daisey Bigelow Real Estate office. He was
always a "people person" so he proved to be a great help to Mrs. Bigelow. Her office was on the main street
and close to home so this was ideal for Bert and he delighted in this endeavor. When his eyesight began to fail
him he could no longer drive his automobile, however he still went to the office most everyday.
In 1932 Howard and his wife Opal moved to California and eventually settled in Chula Vista. In 1937 Ernza,
with her husband Wayne and family, joined the clan in Chula Vista. They all remained there where they raised
their families and contributed much to the growing community.
Bert died in Chula Vista in 1947 and Rebecca joined him in death in 1955. They are interred, along with
Ernza, Howard, Agnes and Esther, in Glen Abbey Memorial Park. Their children Fleda and Robert who
remained loyal to their native Kansas are buried in the Kersey family plot in Wamego, Kansas. Daughters
Clara, Sarah and Ruth remain living in California at the time of this writing.
This information was compiled in January, 2000 and comes from various people beginning with a conversation
between Ruby St. John Kersey and Sarah Domeny Owens, in Wamego Kansas in 1981. This conversation
was mainly about the early years of the marriage of Rebecca and Bert Kersey. Sarah was a younger sister to
Rebecca Jane Domeny Kersey and was born in Laclede, Kansas. Sarah was born October 7, 1890 and died
November 2, 1984 at age 97 in Wamego, Kansas where she is buried. Bob Grutzmacher the oldest grandchild
of Rebecca and Bert Kersey has many fond memories of his grandparents during their years (1920's) in Kansas
as well as their later years in Chula Vista. The daughters of Rebecca and Bert Kersey, Clara Fritzler and Ruth
Hart, also helped Rebecca Jumper, their niece in compiling this information and telling about their years of
growing up in the family.

Martha Emza Kersey
Notes
MarthaEmzaKerseywasthe oldestof ten children, nine of which lived to adulthood.Shewasnamedfor her two Grandmothers.
Shewasborn Septan$r 22, I 898 and at an earlyage(about2 l/2 years)shewastakento Newkirk, Oklahomaby her parurts in, a
coveredwagon. Her fatherhad relativestherebut I'm not sureif theyplannedto stayor visit. Emza'ssisterFledawasaboutsix
monthsold at the time and her mother'ssister,Alzira, wentwith them. Her b'rotherBob wasborn thereon JuneI l, 1902. They
returnedto Kansasshortlythereafterby train, I think.
Westmoreland wasa very smalltown and Emzawaswell known for her takechargemanner. Everyonefelt freeto call her when
theyneededa friend. I canremembermanytimeswhenshewentto sit with peoplewho weredying, helpingwhenpeopleweresick
or if therewasan accident.Shewasalwaysoneof the first to bethere. I think Emza'srecreationswerethe quilting beesor playing
bridge, duringthe earlyyearsor canastapartiesand squaredancing in her lateryears. Shewashappybeinga peoplesperson....She
left her family manyquilts that shehad quiltedandwool rugsthat shehad braidedbut morethan that shepridedherselfbeinga
teacher.Shehelpedmanyyoungneighborchildrento learngoodwork ethicsnot to mentionher childrenand grandchildren. One
of her main goalsin life wasto bea goodexample.
Emzawasa businesswomenlong beforeit waspolitically correct. In the early 1930's,shespent3 yearsas Supervisorof the Adult
EducationProject,which waspart of the WPA.
After the war andthe USO wasno longerin existence, the building becamethe ChulaVista CommunityCenterandBmzabecamea
caterer.Shehired about3 or 4 womenwho helpedher prepareand servemealsto the localRotaryand Lion's Clubseachweek. I
participatedin everyone of theseventures. I servedlunch to the RotaryClub the day Kimber wasborn.
Wayne andqmza did havea few yearsfor weekendgetawaysand a few specialtrips to parts of the countrythey had neverseenas
well asgoingbackto Kansas,beforeWayre startedhavinghealthproblans.
They were alwaysa team and they alwaysput one anotherfirst. Emza could do nothing to changeWayne'shealth problemsbut she
wasalwaystherefor him. He in turn wastrying to takecareof her up until the eveninghe died. Emzawasa widow for l8 years.
Eventhoughher eyesighthad beenbad from the early 1950'sand shebrokea hip in 1971,which did not healproperly, shelived
aloneuntil the last six monthsof her life.
It wasnecessaryfor her to usea wheelchairfor aboutthe last sevenor eightyearsof her life. Shehadtwo strokesand complications
from her diabeiesbeginningNovernberof 1978which madeit necessary homefrom time to time. It
for her to be in a convalescent

Julius Wayne GmEmacher
Notes
Julius Waynewas the seventhsonhrn to W.F. and Laura Ann Grutzmacher. Threesonsdied in infancy. leavingfour sons
to live into adulthood. Wayne,as he was called, wasthe youngest child who helpedwith all choresaroundthe housewhile
his olderbrothershelpedwith the farming.
During his youth, the city of Westmoreland, dug a very large well on the propertythat joined the Grutzmacherhomestead,
whereWayneand his brotherswereborn and grew up. It waspoweredby a pump, that requiredconstantmaintenancefor
this waterwasto supplythe city. Waynewasgiventhisjob. which perhapsled to his life long work asan automechanic.
When Waynewasjust a few daysshort of being seventeen, when the areain which he lived had a terrible flood. Walne was
askedto go along with a group of men aboardthe local " WestmorelandInterurbanMotor Car", which traveledto some
smallcommunities.on a railroadtrack,sotheycouldseewhat the waterwasdoing.Theysq)n foundthemselves in trouble
and not ableto withstandthe water which sweptthe car and the nine men down the creek. Four of the men drowned.
Walne and the othermenwereableto catchhold of somelrecswherethey hadto remainovernightbeforebeingrescued.I
neverheardmy dadtalk aboutthis howeverI havea newspaper articletelling of this disaster, which hasprobabl.v
never
beenequaledin this little community.
Waynewasthe only oneof his family who wasableto graduatefrom high school. Hejoined the Army on Octoberl. l9l8
(WWD shortlybeforethe armisticewassignedon NovemberI l,19l8 sothereforehe wasdischargedon December9. 1918.
He then went to KansasStateCollegein Manhattan.Kansaswherehe took a coursein AutomotiveMechanics.
During his high schooldayshe met my mother,MarthaEmzaKerseywho gladuatedin 1916,at which time shebecamea
teacherin variousschoolsin Pottowatomie. County,KS.
wherethey lived until
They marriedin 1920and first lived in Topekafor a shorttime, then movingbackto Westmoreland
1937.
Wayneownedand operateda garagein Westmoreland from 1929until sometime in 1934.The depression yearswere
diffrcult for most peoplein the little farm communities so Waynechoseto closehis businessand work for other people.
This took him to KansasCity, working for a roadconstructionfirm. wherehe wasin chargeof the maintenance on all of the
heavyequipment. This separationfrom fte family wasdiffrcult for everyone.so it asdecidedto packup and moveto
CaliforniawhereEmza'sparentshad movedin 1929.
Wayneand his family left for CaliforniaJuneI lth, 1937and arrivedin ChulaVista on Junel7th. 1937. Their friends,
Albert and SelmaMayer madethe trip to California with them, but only as a vacation. Albert workedfor the PostOffrce in
Westmoreland and it wasnicelo havethemfor companyon the trip. During the trip afterenteringCaliforniathe old 1929
Nashbroke down out in the desert. We weretowed into town to a garagewhich had to sendto fuversidefor a part. lt was
terribly hot there and it took a long time and when the part did comeWaynehad to replacethe pafl becausethe peopleat the
garagecouldnot.
Wayneworked at oddjobs after first arriving in Chula Vista. He wasevenan extra in a movie named"TestPilot" , which
starredClark Gableand SpencerTracey. He wasa mechanicat a Ford Dealerin EncinitasCaliforniafor awhile. Then
backto ChulaVista wherehe wentto work at the MOD LemonPackingPlant. It wasduring this time Emzastartedtaking
in laundry. This turned into a very goodbusiness.which Wayne,Bob & Beckyall helpe.dwith.
In 1939theypurchaseda placeat 319F St. which wasmoresuitablefor their businessaswell asliving quarters. This
building also had roomsupstairswhich wentually were rentedout to peoplewho cameto the areato work in the defense
factoriesduring WW II.
The big drawbackto this building was the renovationthat was necessary but, Waynewho was "Jack of all trades"could do
all of that too. which entailednew floorins hereand there. new walls hereand there. as well as a door or window hereor
there.
During the fo(ies Wayne andEmza workedvery hard, howeverthey werevery involved with the AmericanLegion (Jean
FrederickLoba Post 434)in Chula Vista. They hel@ to build the building, which still stands. Onceagain, Waynewas
The Commanderof the Postherein California. He wasvery active in the Chula Vista MountedPolice. He purchaseda
beautifirl Palominothat he named"Bullet" and they rode in manyparadesall aroundSouthernCalifornia. Wayneand Emza
becamemembersof the Forward8 SquareDanceClub and through all of theseactivitiesthey formed manywonderful.
lastingfriendships.
In 1940Waynewentto work at the"Destroyer Base"(32ndSfeet Naval Station),in SanDiego. This Civil Servicejob, was
what Waynehad alwayshopedfor. It offeredhis family the securityhe had alwaysstrived for. The laundry wasa success
howeverit was morediffrcult to hire help, aswell aspurchasethe equipment, due to the war efforts. The laundry business
eventuallybecameolerwhelming. It becametoo involved for the family, sothe-v-choseto closethe business.
Wayneand Emzaplayeda big part in Kimber'syounglife. During the time that Beckywasa singlemotherandworking'
from sometimein 1954until shemarried again in 1957they lookedafter Kimber for many hours, eachday. Kimber was
very closeto both of them and only thirteenwhenWaynedied. With his fatherout of the picture, this wasa secondbig loss
in his younglife.
Wayneworkedat the Naval Stationuntil suchtime his healthforcedhis retirement. They soldtheir placeat 319 F St. in
ChulaVista and purchaseda threebedroomhomeat 243 GuavaAve..just a few blocksapart. Wayne'shealthwasterminal

at SharpHospital in the KearneyMesaareaof SanDiego. It wasdeterminedat that time, he had dweloped Cancerof the

Carl Robert McNulty
Carl Robet McNulty was born in Petluma, California. His parents divorced when he was about thirteen years old and he and his two
brothers were raised by their father, Wayne W. who worked for PG&E. The boys mother's name was, Ruth. Carl's older brother
whose name was Harry played a big role in the upbringing of Carl and his younger brother, Kenny.
Carl was aU. S. Marine during WWlI when he met Kimbers mother, Becky. Becky's mother was the manager ofthe USO in Chula
Vista, California, which was a bus stop for the servicemen who were stationed at NAAS Brown Field close to the US border. Becky
spent many hours there helping to run the fountain where they served sandwiches, coke's, coffee and ice cream. Becky made a lot of
good friends, did a lot of dancing and Emza could keep a close eye on her.
Carl was shipped overseas with his unit Marine Air Warning Squardron 7. They went ashore with one of the early waves during the
invasion of Okinawa and remained there for sometime. They eventually went to Tientsin, China where they stayed for awhile, too.
Hopefully sometime Kimber can fill in the details.
It was sometime after Carl returned from overseas and went home to Petaluma after his discharge from the Marine Corps that he and
Becky married on February 7,1947 in Chula Vista, Califimia. He worked for Wilson F. Clark Wholesale Hardware Co. in San
Diego as an outside sales man. I think he liked the work and was very good at this job.
Kimber was born in the Chula Vista Hospital on December 16, 1947 and we lived in an apartment at 351 Third Ave. in Chula Vista
(the same apt. that Bert and Becky Kersey had lived in for many years). It was around 1950 that we purchased a home on a comer
of Parkway near 5th Ave. in Chula Vista. It was about 1954 when Becky and Carl decided to divorce, with that being final in 1955.

Robert George Kersey
Robert George Kersey (Bob) was named for his two Grandfathers and born in Newkirk, Oklahoma. He was the only child in his
family who was not born in the state of Kansas. His family moved back to Kansas when he was very young, where he grew up in
and around Westmoreland. He and his friend and future brother-in-law Wayne Grutzmacher attended Kansas State around 1918
or 1919 where they took courses in auto mechanics. Bob worked for his dad for awhile in his garage and automobile agency. He
ran for Sheriff ofPottawatomie Co. Kansas in 1936 and was defeated by Joe Dixon. He did however serve as deputy sheriff for
many years (forty-four years in all) under many different sherifI's He was in the automobile business and owned The Kersey
Motor Co. from the late 1930's to about 1950. The dealership sold Buicks and Studebakers. He owned several parcels ofland in
Pottawatomie County and lived most of his adult life in Wamego. He was a very successful business man and highly respected
throughout the State.
Ruby Louise St. John (Ruby) was born in Louisville, KS and was one of eight children of Charles and Lena St. John. She and
Robert Kersey were married in Ordway, CO on July 18, 1922.

Horace Howard Kersey (Howard) was born on a farm northwest of Wamego, Kansas referred to as the Schuler place. Three of his
sisters were born there also. He went to different schools as the family move around with high school being in Westmoreland. I
don't believe that he finished high school which was true of many young men during those years. I'm not sure why. Howard
worked in Topeka during his younger years and that is where he met and married Opal Huss. They traveled around the States
with his work but they lived for the most part in the San Diego and Chula Vista areas. He was engaged in sales work and then in
ownership and operation ofliquor stores, restaurants, and motels. He is buried in Chula Vista in the Glen Abbey Cemetery.

Agnes Bernice was born on the Schuler place when the family lived there, which was located northwest of Wamego. I have been
told that she weighed 14 pounds. She attended various schools in the county ofPottawatomie and graduated high school in
Westmoreland. She was diagnosed with diabetes at around the age of 13, I believe, by an old country doctor named Brunner. She
moved with her parents to California in 1929 where she spent the rest of her life. She worked in various fields and had many
friends. Perhaps the highlite of her life was a trip to Cuba, by ship, where she visited her sister Esther and brother-in-law Bobbie
Bolton who was a Naval Officer stationed at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. Her health was never good as the diabetes took its tole
in many ways. She was blind for the last two years of her life however she had a positive outlook and tried to be cheerful around
others. I was twenty at the time of her death and I remember her living with our family at the time. My memories of her are very
pleasant and I remember what a lovely, fun loving person that she was. She died much too young at age 38years and 5 months.
She is buried in Glenn Abbey Memorial Park beside her parents.

Bill later worked for the California Highway Patrol for many years as a patrol car and motorcycle uniformed officer. Their home
was in Encinitas for many years where they raised their children. He was a highly respected officer and man who was the original
"Poster Boy" for the Highway Patrol in their efforts to slow traffic down and make the highways safer.
Sarah and Bill moved to Escondido while he still worked for the Highway Patrol and after his retirement from the Highway
Patrol, he worked as a projectionist for local theaters in the Escondido area. Sarah and Bill were very acctive in various civic
groups and took a number of vacation trips They eventually sold their home and moved into a lovely mobilehome. The park was
centerally located and had lovely surroundings where they had many happy years together.

Robert Bolton Jr. was a retired Navy Capt:ain, he graduated from the US Naval Academy and spent 30 years in the Navy. His
Social Security number is SSN 312 32 0266 and his service number was 056060 USN Retired.
During World War II a few of the things that I remember about his career are that he was in command of a Flotilla of LST's in the
south Pacific. It was during the battle of Tarawa that he had to be evacuated from his command ship and returned to Balboa
Naval Hospital because of a bleeding ulcer, which required the removal of a large portion of his stomach. I recall going with
Aunt Esther to the hospital to visit him. This operation at that time was a very serious operation. He was not sent back to sea at
that time. He later served on Admiral Chester Nimitz Staff which was quite an honor. He had numerous other duties on both the
East and West coasts. I the late 1930's they lived in Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba for a few years. He and Esther divorced
in September 1947.
Bobby joined the Culver Military Academy at Culver, Indiana in 1949 and retired from there in 1961.
His address at the time of his death was 381 Academy Rd., Culver, Indiana.
He and his second wife, Frances Moore Bolton, the mother of his children (who died 2 weeks after he did) are both interred at
Pelham, New York, Christ Church at The Bolton Priory.
I believe that Robert and his second wife had two children. I was told that the first child was a down syndrome child. The second
child went to the Naval Academy as did his father. He may have been at the Academy at the time of his parents deaths. I think
that he must have been born about 1949 or 1950 and if so he would have been at the academy some time during the years from
1968 through 1973. I have not figured out how to locate this young man. I do not know his name other than Bolton however I do
plan to try again one day. I have a few things that were about his fathers Navy career that I think that he would like to have.
I remember Uncle Bobby with fond memories. He was especially good to my grandparents, Bert and Rebecca Kersey and the
whole family loved him. I have treasured these momentos from his career however I feel the rightful owner should be his son if I
can ever locate him
