Pastoral Letter
Dear friends.
We are now really looking forward to arriving in the
benefice and being with you all. However, the
excitement of this new venture is, naturally, tinged
with sadness. Leaving is tougher than we imagined.
Goodbyes are really hard. When I was appointed to
serve you I was elated but then the realisation
quickly dawned that we would have to say good bye to many, many
dearly loved friends. I believe it is important to both live in and
through the elation and excitement of new horizons and challenges
but it is also important to acknowledge the grief of parting; of
diverging paths. It is equally crucial, though, to realise that in most
instances endings are also new opportunities and beginnings.
It is essential that we realise too that transitional spaces, between
endings and beginnings, are not simply vacuums in which we stand
vacant and inactive. Whether we can see it or not God is there. He is
the God who understands parting and loss; the God who walks with
us in the wondering, waiting and exploration and the God who fills
the vacuum with his love. His people are a key element in the
revelation of his love. In the first of Johns letters to the Early Church
in the New Testament he makes it abundantly clear that one of
the most profound ways to experience Gods love is through each
other (1John: 7-12). It has always been my experience that the
space left when we leave loved ones or by the departure of a loved
one is, in time, filled in a different and unique way by the God given
friendship and love of others if we will allow it.
So whilst we feel the sadness of separation we also joyfully
anticipate the many beautiful and amazing things that God will do
with and in all of us as we enter a new phase of life in your company.
Our path converges with yours and though we have no idea of what
is ahead we are very confident of Gods constant presence and
guiding. Our prayer is, Lord Jesus, as we journey together with you,
lead us to where you want us to be. Heavenly Father, your Kingdom
come in us and your will only be done in and through us so that
everyone will know just how much you love them. Amen.
Until we meet, the peace of the Lord be always with you.
Stephen.

TEXT FOR THE MONTH

Matthew 18 : 3
And Jesus said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change
and become like little children, you will never enter the
kingdom of heaven. The NIV Bible
Prayer for the Month.
Loving God, as we see around us the signs of autumn and regret
the passing of summer, we find the idea of change difficult to
accept. In our worship also, we find it too easy to lose the sense of
joy and privilege of knowing you.
As we face new challenges in the coming months rekindle in us the
spark of the hope and enthusiasm that your gospel message brings
to us. Revive in us a picture of your kingdom and an understanding
of the part you would have us play in bringing it to fruition. Help us
to live and work for Christ. Restore us through your love and renew
us in your service
In Jesus name we pray.

Amen

Prayer Points for Octoberpray for:

The people of Syria that we and the world will not forget their
desperate troubles, as the refugees flood into Europe and we
consider how we should respond to plight.
The induction of our new priest Stephen Ball that he might inspire us
and lead us to a greater knowledge of God and increase our love for
Jesus.
All who attend the various home groups this autumn that they may
enjoy warmth and fellowship as they study your word.

WOMENS INSTITUTE
Reported by Ilene Iles
Glenda Holder, our President for the September
Meeting in the absence of Doris LEnfant, welcomed
everyone to our Meeting in the Liddell Hall. She said that, hopefully
we would be back in the main Hall for our next Meeting in October and
we would be able to have a real tea once again!
The Business Meeting took place and Members were reminded about
our Cookery Competition in November. Glenda advised those present
that Schedules had been prepared and were available: bring back to
the October Meeting and she hoped that we would have lots of
entries! This part of the Meeting closed at 2.30 p.m.
Glenda then introduced Dr. Alick Jones, our
Speaker for the afternoon. His subject was Birds
and Gardens: Perfect Partners a very interesting
and informative talk with slides. He explained that
his talk was on behalf of The British Trust for
Ornithology (BTO) which deals with the science side
of ornithology and works closely with the RSPB. The BTO relies on
thousands of volunteers carrying our surveys for information
concerning bird numbers etc. Dr. Jones went on to say that gardens
constitute 10% of UK land and provide a very important, varied and
diverse habitat for our birds as we are losing so many fields and
hedges, and sadly some species are in decline (song thrushes, tree
and house sparrows etc.). We were treated to some lovely slides of
our common gardens birds (blue tits, robins, blackbirds, bull finches
etc.) and visitors such as the field fare and wax wings and Dr Jones
encouraged us all to grow plants that will provide seeds for the birds
and to put up bird feeders. Ilene gave the vote of thanks.

Birds
and
Gardens

Dr. Jones then judged the competition of bird ornaments/post cards

and the winner was Joyce Griffin with her lovely ornament of two
kingfishers on a plinth. Tea/coffee and biscuits followed and the raffle
was drawn.

Police Beat Report

In early July there were a number of theft related crimes
in Sherfield Park, in the early hours of 28th and 29th.
An insecure van and an insecure garage were entered
and had items stolen from them.
On the same night there was a 'smash'n grab' of a wallet from a car in
Elvetham Rise and another attempt to enter a vehicle in the same
road.
Please ensure you secure your vehicles and do not leave valuables
inside.
PCSO Nicole Wheatley has now started on the Sherfield Park and
Chineham beat, taking the place of Richard Strauss. You will see her
patrolling the area helping to keep Chineham and Sherfield Park safe.

New Clinical Chair for North Hampshire Clinical

Commissioning Group
North Hampshire Clinical Commissioning Group
(CCG) announced the appointment of Dr. Nicola
Decker to the position of Clinical Chair (Interim).
Dr. Decker takes over this key position from Dr.
Sam Hullah who has returned to practice full time
as a GP.
Dr. Decker will continue to work part time as a GP at the surgeries in
Overton and Oakley.
Dr. Decker qualified at the University of the Witwatersrand in South
Africa in 1990 and completed her post-graduate GP training in England
in 1995. She joined the Oakley and Overton GP Practice in March
2002 after moving to Hampshire from Bury St Edmunds and became a
partner in 2006. She was appointed as a NICE fellow in 2013 and this
role has facilitated the Dementia Friendly Practice initiative which she
launched with Overton and Oakley surgeries in April 2014. This work
has now been cascaded by the Wessex Academic Health Science
Network and is strongly supported by the Royal College of General
Practitioners and Alzheimers society.
Dr. Nicola Decker said; I am very excited about this opportunity to
lead our CCG, to improve outcomes for our patients and to deliver the
best value for money. Over the past nine years I have developed my
leadership skills through experience gained as my practices
management partner and commissioning lead as well as in my role as
Dementia Lead for our CCG.
Dr. Matt Nisbet, chair of the CCG Membership Senate said; "Dr.
Nicola Decker is an experienced and respected local GP. The CCG
needs a strong clinical leader to continue its work to improve the health
services provided to the 218,000 patients living in North Hampshire. I
am sure Nicola will be an excellent leader and clinical advocate.
Graham Wallis the Accountable Officer for North Hampshire CCG
said;
I am looking forward to working alongside Nicola in a true partnership
bringing the best out of the CCGs clinical and managerial skills as we
lead North Hampshire CCG out of recovery.

Basingstoke Civil Service Retirement Fellowship

In welcoming 52 members to the monthly meeting held on 2nd
September John Lambeth, the chairman, commented on the
recent enjoyable visit to Sissinghurst Castle and Gardens.
Christine Broadbent gave her welfare report and Tony Brazier,
the Secretary, reminded everyone of the forthcoming Mystery
Trip in October which includes lunch and tea.

Views of Sissinghurst

The guest was Jean Sheppard who presented a 50 slide

pictorial quiz covering a wide range of subjects from art,
geography and history through to horticulture, sport and
zoology. Her detailed and often amusing description of the
answers made up for the fact that no one managed a full
score.
At the next meeting on Wednesday 7th October the speaker
will be Rachel Baughen from the charity Kipepeo Designs.
The group meets on the first Wednesday of each month at
Brookvale Village Hall from 10 am 12 noon and all retired
Civil Servants and their partners are welcome. Further details
about meetings can be obtained from the Secretary Tony
Brazier on 01256 418770 or at bjmapbr@ntlworld.com and if
you would like to join us on any of our trips please contact

Basingclog Morris Side

Basingclog are Basingstokes friendly local Clog Morris
side comprising members from Basingstoke and
surrounding areas. We dance the North West style of
clog performing dances from the North of England
originating some 300 years ago in and around the
cotton mills. We are a mixed side so male and female

generated by our band.
We are coming to the end of another successful Summer season, you
may have seen us dancing at local pubs, Festival Place, Sherfield on

Neighbourhood Plan Consultations

In progressing the Neighbourhood Plan the
Working Party has involved members of the
community who have signed up for the Forum,
as well as groups using the Village Hall and
places of worship within the Neighbourhood
Area. This has helped with building up a vision, objectives and
policies reflecting how local people would like to see Sherfield
develop over the next 15 years.
We would now like to ask local landowners whether they
wish to be consulted about any aspect of the Plan. Is there
any specific information, circumstance or constraint that you
wish us to take into account? We would welcome any input
you may have.
Please contact Peter Hayes, Neighbourhood Plan
Administrator on 07711 643151 or email
sol_planning@yahoo.co.uk to put your views forward.
Thank you very much.

Sherfield show 2015

Family Fun for All Ages!
Its brilliant! I had no idea it would be like this.
Theres so much to see, said a new resident.
Held on a sunny Sunday this year, in the
beautifully refurbished village hall, this was a bumper 49th year
for Sherfield Flower and Produce Show.
The two halls were bursting with colour and brimming with
people and the sound of her harp,
beautifully played by young
Charlotte Farrugia, filled the
Garden Room.
We rely on our regular entrants
and standards were high across
all classes but the committee was
especially thrilled to see so many
new people and so many entries
from the 30 children who took
part. Well done children! said
the judge. The quality, creativity
and quantity of entries was
impressive.
Our thanks to parents and
grandparents for encouraging and supporting their youngsters.
Thanks also for the great jobs done by our stewards, judges,
auctioneer, teas team, stallholders and raffle sponsors and we
look forward to welcoming you all to our Golden Anniversary
Show next year, again on a Sunday, 4th September.

If you go down to the woods today

Users of the village green may have noticed some strange sightings
over the past year fairy doors, dinosaur bones, pirate treasure and
even a collection of teddy bears picnicking, to name but a few.
This is because over the past year the village green and village hall
has been host to a Monday-morning toddler group called Wild Child,
which celebrates its first birthday this month. A year ago this month I
was tentatively stepping out into the village green (in a torrential
downpour!) with a group of bewildered-looking toddlers and their
enthusiastic parents. We pretended to be hedgehogs, made a
massive pile of leaves (which we then took great pleasure in kicking
about) and created our own hedgehogs from playdough and sticks
that the children collected themselves.
Since then weve had very many adventures on the green and I often
reflect on what an ideal setting it provides for our sessions. It is not
only beautiful, ecologically diverse and situated conveniently next to a
lovely village hall but, perhaps more importantly, it is safe and used by
friendly and considerate people. Not once has any of my equipment
gone walk-about and not once have any of our children been greeted
by anything other than a friendly smile by other users of the green.
So I would like to say a very big thankyou to the people of Sherfield
for enabling us to create a really rather special playing and learning
environment for our toddlers.

Our most recent meeting was our annual

play reading. The play chosen was Star
Quality by Noel Coward, a little-known
play about a play. This was Cowards last
play, but is unusual in that it was originally
a short story written in 1951. It was re-written as a play in 1967,
but not produced on the stage until 2001. Its first outing was at
the Theatre Royal, Windsor before being performed on the West
End stage where its premiere was in October 2001 starring
Penelope Keith and Una Stubbs. It was adapted by Christopher
Luscombe, the plays director. It is about a play called Dark
Heritage and features a well-known actress by the name of
Lorraine Barrie, a very temperamental lady who thinks a lot of
herself and clashes with the plays ruthless director. She is
loosely based on Gertrude Lawrence, a friend of Cowards.
The cast also features theatre veterans and a young nave
playwright. From the first rehearsal to the
opening night, there is a clash of personalities
Star
and egos. It follows the processes involved with
Quality
staging a play including castings, read-through,
re-writes, dress rehearsal and finally the opening
night. We enjoyed reading this play which was
quite humorous and interesting in that it was previously
unknown to most of us.
We have recently welcomed a new member to our group and
there are two other ladies who are keen to join us. We meet
once a month in members houses, although sometimes hire a
room for talks or special events. If you are interested in coming
along to see what NWR is about, please give me a ring on
882106. Our next meeting in early October is another annual
favourite, Wine, Women and Song, where over a glass (or
two!) of wine we each choose songs which may or may not link
to a theme and which we obviously like. Later in October we
will be discussing Freedom of the Press. Our November
meeting will be our annual telephone quiz, then into December it
will be our Christmas Celebration

Meeting dates
The next Full Parish Council meeting dates are 14th
October and 11th November at 7.30 pm in the Liddell Hall.
Housing Survey
By the time this is published, the housing survey should be
underway in the parish. Please can you take the time to respond
and give your views as this will feed into the report to define
requirements for future housing.
Dog Fouling
Once again this matter has been brought to our attention. It is
particularly concerning that dog owners allow their pets to foul
areas which are dedicated to sports and play activities. All dog
owners should be aware of the requirement to clean up after their
pets and should make sure they have the appropriate equipment
to do so. Owners who fail to clear up after their dogs could be
fined up to 1000 in court, but there is also a fixed penalty scheme
that allows authorities to issue 50 spot fines for the offence. Not
only is it illegal not to clear up after your dog, it is unpleasant,
antisocial and can be dangerous to children and those taking part
in sports on the Village Green. Please clean up after your dog and
dispose of any mess appropriately.
Allotment Holders AGM
The Allotment Holders AGM will be held in the Liddell Room on
Wednesday 7th October at 7.30 pm.

Cat carers desperately needed for local feline charity

Cats Protections Basingstoke & District Branch is
looking to recruit fosterers to care for unwanted and
abandoned cats while they wait to find a new owner.
Cat fostering is hands-on cat welfare work looking after
felines on a short-term basis, either in cat pens in their garden or a
spare room in their home.
The Basingstoke branch, which is run entirely by volunteers, needs
people who can offer a temporary home to one or more cats whilst
they get back on their paws.
Cat fosterers play a vital role in our charity by caring for cats in their
own home until a new owner can be found, said Hilary Wells, Branch
Co-ordinator.
No special equipment is needed but cat fosterers do need to have
either a spare room or an area in their garden where a cat pen can be
housed and, of course, a love of cats is a must. The charity will
provide plenty of assistance and support materials for all fosterers.
Offering a temporary home to a cat in need can be an incredibly
rewarding experience, and becoming a volunteer for Cats Protection
is a great way to meet new friends both human and feline!
One cat currently requiring a new home is Willow who is a lovely
friendly cat. He is approximately 3-4 years old
and is really affectionate and loves a fuss. He is
looking for a new home without very young
children.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for
Cats Protections Basingstoke & District Branch
then please call 0845 177 1364 or email
adoptacat-basingstoke@hotmail.co.uk}.

SHERFIELD PARK MATTERS

The Sherfield Park Community Association (SPCA) is supporting a
Voluntary Community Good Neighbours Scheme that will help
individuals who need transportation to hospital or to doctors
appointments. If you could really use the service, are interested in
volunteering or just want more information, contact our scheme leaders
Kathy and Graham Ling at 01256 882 584 or email: kling@btinternet.com
SHOPS The time has come to get the shops we have all been looking for!
To help make that happen the SPCA is looking within its community for
support from those willing to assist with relevant legal and commercial
leasing expertise. Look out for our notices on the SPCA web page or on
Facebook. Or simply email your ideas and questions to:
communications@sherfieldparkcommunity.co.uk
SPEEDWATCH Speeding through Sherfield Park has become an ever
increasing problem and residents now fear that it is only a matter of time
before a serious accident occurs on one of our roads. Gaiger Avenue,
Rockbourne Road and Allington Rise have been identified as the worst
roads at this time. As a result, there is now an intention to introduce a local
SPEEDWATCH programme. Promoted by our Borough Councillor, this
programme would be manned by local residents - trained by police to use
specialist equipment that would record speeding offenders. Thereafter
there is a reporting system that initially issues written warnings to all
drivers shown to be speeding. If these offences are repeated, more
serious actions are taken by the appropriate authorities. Volunteers
interested in joining this scheme are being sought via the Sherfield Park
Neighbourhood Watch. To record your interest or for more information
email Peter Howe of the NHW Co-ordinating Team at:
pandphowe@hotmail.co.uk
Remember, the SPCA is a registered charity whose sole purpose is to
support the community. It is not part of the government and is certainly
not government funded; neither is it associated with any political party.
Simply put its a group of volunteers responsible for the Community Centre
and its recreation fields. So, if you are interested in joining in and helping
to serve the community, or just have questions, then do let us know at:
communications@sherfieldparkcommunity.co.uk/ or why not drop in for a
chat?
All residents of Sherfield Park are more than welcome to attend SPCA
Committee Meetings held on the last Wednesday of each month at 8:00
pm at the Sherfield Park Community Centre. Howard Perkins

Borough Councillor Update - Joyce Bowyer

October is set to become a very busy month with the Inspector
arriving to scrutinize the Local Plan for Basingstoke as well as
receiving discussions from interested parties.
Until we get this plan approved, without a 5 year land supply,
we are totally open to speculative Developments across our part of
Hampshire and we have seen more than our fair share in our corner of
the Borough.
Along with colleagues from Chineham and Bramley I have attended a pre
planning meeting for a development at Redlands off the A33 roundabout
opposite Taylors Farm for up to 150 dwellings. There is a Pop up Caf at
Sherfield Park Community Centre on Sunday morning 4th October
between 10.30 and 12.30 where the plans can be viewed and a
representative will be available to answer any questions though I stress
this is NOT a consultation but an exchange of views and ideas.
I will also be attending a meeting concerning detailed planning for Razors
Farm and hope that concerns expressed by Councillors at the last
meeting will have been addressed.
Although both these Developments are in adjoining parishes they have a
huge affect on the residents of Taylors Farm.
