Compare and Contrast Outline

I. Though comprised of varying views on religious beliefs and the different

economical outcome of the their own respective colonies, the Spanish and the
English shared a similar political standing that developed into exclusive
results of colonization of the Americas.

II. Although not a very successful trait of colonization, the Spanish and the
English contained many corrupt political rulers and people including the
viceroys.

A. The government in Europe had little control over the colonies so they
appointed the viceroys. However, the viceroys were so far from Europe
that they enjoyed vast power over their jurisdiction
B. Both the Spanish and the English subjugated the Amerindians and brought
over African slaves. This brought to an end of a huge number of
Amerindians that would forever scar the Amerindians forever.
Analysis: The European countries lay waste to several Amerindians allowing
easy and successful domination. This in turn helped to further destroy any
chances of rebellion

III. The Spanish and the English also differed on views of religion, with the
British bringing along several different sects attracting many more from the
Old World while the Spanish stuck strictly to Roman Catholicism which was
extremely disliked among the natives as well as immigrants.

A. Being more religiously open, The British attracted many more immigrants
obtaining the biggest population of a colony of the time. Many of the
English colonials were attempting to escape religious persecution in the
mainland.
B. The Spanish used religion as an excuse for conquest in the Americas.
Many of the Catholic clergy attempted to force the leaders into becoming
Catholic but somewhat gave up after discovering them to practice their old
beliefs.
Analysis: Complete domination and coercion are unsuccessful methods of
colonies. Having more religious freedom like the British resulted in the multi-
cultural colonies in the Americas. The Spanish were overall much more
aggressive in terms of conquest.
IV. Another major point that the British and the Spanish diverged is in their own
economic income sources as well as the way to produce their wealth.

A. The Spanish used a mainly a free source of labor by using the Amerindian
salves to do their bidding. Many would farm sugar plantations or mine in
the silver mines, which was the biggest source of wealth for Spain. The
British however used indentured servants for quite some time and not all
of the British colonies needed slaves drawing their wealth from lumber
B. Because the British arrived much later than the Spanish, they depended on
private companies and individual proprietors which led to more economic
activity as well as culture, political institutions, and culture development
Analysis: The Spanish mainly acquired wealth for the sake of acquiring
wealth and becoming more powerful. Meanwhile, the British not only
obtained wealth, but even greater economic activity along with political
institutions and culture.
