Installation
Please check the package of machine immediately upon receipt. If there is any damages,
take necessary claim action accordingly.

1. Unpack the package & check the Voltage setting of Power Supply to confirm its
conformity with local power settings (115V or 230V).
2. Connect the power cord properly.
3. Connect the optional 3-color alarm lamp by locking it by screws behind the machine, if
purchased. The signal wire must be connected also to the ALARM port on rear of
machine.
4. For TA-2000, please install the clip to stabilize the hard drive at each slot on machine, if
2.5 NB or slim 3.5 SATA HDDs are used. For normal type of 3.5 SATA hard drive in
thickness, the clip must be removed to prevent the damage of clip.
5. On TA-2200, if 2.5 SATA hard drive is required to be copied, the optional 2.5 to 3.5
housing adapter will be needed to convert the size of 2.5 SATA hard drive into 3.5. If
the TA-2200 will be used to copy 2.5 SATA hard drives dedicatedly, 15 pcs of the 2.5
hot-swap drive bay for TA-2200 is suggested to replace all the 3.5 hot-swap drive bays.
6. Switch on the power of machine, you will hear from the machine two Bi sounds and see
series of testing on machine. Also, you can see from the LCD display the following
messages in sequence: manufacturers name (Wytron Technology Co., Ltd.), model
number & firmware version. The Fan of power supply will not rotate when the machine is
powered ON as standby mode and will only rotate when the GO button is pressed to
start real operation.
7. Factorys default function, Quick Copy, will be ready for operation. Press the Up (^) and
Down (v) button to switch to other function, if required.
8. Connect the SATA data/power cables on all ports of machine, including power and data
connectors to copy SATA hard drives.
9. Restore to default settings: Press to hold down the Down button (v) and turn on the
power simultaneously. Do not release the button till the Clear setup message is shown
on the LCD display (this message will be shown shortly after testing of LEDs is
completed). This reset procedure is normally used when first receipt of machine, after
updating BIOS program, machine runs abnormally or simply to restore the factory default
settings after somebodys special testing.

TA-2000/TA-2200 Hard Drive Duplicator

Concept
Good concept is important to perform satisfactory duplication and to get expected results.
1.

Please prepare & check carefully the Master hard drive. Any bad sector or error may
cause unsatisfactory duplication and the data copied in target hard drives might not be
exactly the same as that in master hard drive.
2. There might be some cases that the master hard drives are created through restoring
procedures from third-party software utilities such as Symantec Norton GhostTM. Such
master hard drives can run correctly in an individual PC but they are not identical with
the original master created by formal installation procedures prescribed by the original
system such as Microsoft or other OS system. Thus, the contents of targets duplicated
from restored master will not be the same as that of original master. Please make
sure that proper original master is used for duplication in mass production.
3. Master hard drive must be inspected or scanned periodically to prevent bad sector from
occurring in later operation. Targets duplicated thereafter will also have trouble if
original master has bad sector.
4. The contents of a hard drive can be divided into two main parts: the Operating System
(OS) and the Partition. But there are many combinations such as single OS with single
or multi-partitions, multi-OS with single-partition for each OS or multi-OS with multipartition for each OS. While Wytron acknowledges the necessity to make unique
software by different system integrators but Wytron may not be fully aware of these OS
system software and that the hard drive duplicator may not be 100% compatible with
certain special software stored in master HDD. However, Wytron is committed to
providing best solution to customers satisfaction. Please contact your vendor or Wytron
directly if there is problem in duplicating any special software. Wytron will do her utmost
effort to meet the requirement.
4.1. Operation System (OS): Currently, Wytrons hard drive duplicators are
compatible with many known OS in the market, such as Microsoft Windows
95/98/METM, Windows NTTM, Windows 2000 and the latest Windows XPTM
Professional or Home version, Linux/Unix, FreeBSD, BeOS, MacintoshTM OS,
Novell NetwareTM, IDE RAID system, etc.. Some customers may want to
combine different OS into one hard drive. In most cases, multi-OS can be
duplicated by Copy or Quick Copy function if the target(s) is exactly the same
as master hard drive. But for targets with larger capacity, it may be difficult to tell
how the machine will handle the extra capacity. Therefore, it is suggested to use
same size, same models/brands of targets as those of master for duplicating
multi-OS.
4.2. Partition number: for single OS, duplication is easy to handle if there is only one
partition, no matter whether the target hard drive is same size/model as that of
master or larger. For targets with larger capacity, there are two choices:
A. Keep the partition size of targets same as that of master and leave each targets
extra capacity as free space which can be used for other OS system.
B. Expand the partition size of target to maximum capacity and copy data area from
master to it.
14

Wytron Technology Co., Ltd.

Single OS with multi-partition structure: In the case of same size, same model/
brand of target hard drive as that of the master, duplication is easy and can be done
by using Copy or Quick Copy function.
For targets with larger capacity than the master, one way of duplication is to leave
the targets extra capacity as free space for other OS. The other is to expand the
last partition to maximum capacity. The best function to duplicate targets with larger
capacity than master is Quick copy. If Copy is used instead of Quick copy, the
PC will not be able to read the data on the targets under hard drives Auto setting
(PC motherboard configuration setting for hard drive). In order to read from those
targets, you have to change in PC their parameters such as head, cylinder,
sector to those of the master.
With multi-OS, no matter how many partitions there are in the master, it is
suggested to use same size, same model/brand of targets as that of the master.

***** Please bear in mind that if the capacity of master is larger than that of target hard
drives, duplication will not succeed. Make sure the target hard drives capacity is
equal or larger than that of mater hard drive.
Customer should therefore always make a sample Master and duplicate to target by
Copy or Quick Copy function and use the target to run in PC to confirm if the targets
duplicated are identical with and fully functionally as that of the master. This step helps
avoid possible mistakes and interruption of formal mass duplication.

TA-2000/TA-2200 Hard Drive Duplicator

Operation
Pay attention to the followings during operation:
1. Operators should always wear gloves and avoid touching the hard drives by naked
hands. Anti-static wire is needed to remove potential static electricity around and
machine should be grounded correctly also.
2. Moving of the hard drives during operation is prohibited to avoid damaging of hard drive
itself.
3. The hard drive should be packed in anti-static box or anti-plastic bag and should not be
stacked over one another during transportation.
4. Check all cable connections before pressing GO button to start the operation.
5. Operation is started by pressing the GO button & only at this moment, the power will be
transmitted to hard drives. It will be cut off automatically when the operation is finished
or abort. After the power is cut off and LEDs light up, the connected hard drives can be
removed or replaced for new run of operation. Do not use the power switch on power
supply to control power ON and OFF for hard drives as this will damage the switch
shortly.
6. Both the power & flat data cables should be handled with care. Loose plug-in to &
especially improper un-plug of the cables from the hard drives will cause damages to
the cables and thus bad duplication results.
7. Cables connected between machine and hard drives should be replaced regularly as
they will wear out during usage. Frequency of replacement will vary & depends on to
actual usage conditions.
8. Different functions in either Main or Sub Menu can be selected by pressing the Up (^) or
Down (v) button. Each press of these buttons will switch the function to the next in
circular sequence and you can go back to the original one at the end of sequence.
Each function can be entered for setting or started the shown operation by pressing the
GO button.
Also the switching of Main Menu to Sub Menu or vice versa can be easily done by
pressing GO button when either menu function is shown on the LCD display. E.g.,
when you are at either function in Main Menu, press the GO button when the Sub
menu function is shown to enter the Sub Menu. Or, when you are in Sub Menu, press
the GO button when the Main menu function is shown to return to Main Menu. The
Set button on the LCD panel is a quick button which will lead you to switch between
Setup (in Sub Menu) and Copy (in Main Menu) function.
9. Button operation in Setup: When Setup function is shown on the LCD display, you
can press the GO button to enter into the settings selection menu. In this menu, there
is a sign of > at lower right corner of LCD display to show you that it is a menu
mode, pressing the Up (^) and Down (v) buttons will enable you to select specific
16

Wytron Technology Co., Ltd.

setting in circular sequence . When the desired setting is shown on the LCD display,
you can press the GO button to enter and there will be an asterisk (*) sign shown at
lower right corner. It is the change option mode & users can press the Up (^) and
Down (v) buttons to switch the option for that setting. After selecting the option, you
can press GO button to exit that setting and return to the settings selection menu. The
sign at lower right corner will be changed back to > as menu mode. If all the
settings you need to change are done, you must exit the Setup function by pressing
the GO button at Save setup to save all changes or Set button on LCD panel directly
to bring you out of Setup function, those changed in settings will also be saved.
10.During operation, the LCD display will show current function at work at the upper left
corner and the capacity of master at upper right corner. The counter is shown at bottom
left corner and the elapse time at bottom right corner. The current running speed per
minute in megabyte will be shown in digits (1, 2 etc.) in the middle of LCDs 2nd row.
11.Operation can be terminated simply by pressing the Down (v) button when required.
Try not to turn off the main power of machine during operation as it may cause
unexpected damage to hard drives, except for special case such as Hang of machine.
12.During operation, 3 big fans built inside the machine will start to blow upward to hard
drives to reduce the heat generated in operation.
13.If the optional 3-color alarm lamp is installed, during operation, the Yellow alarm will
light up to represent the machine is IN-USE status. When there is any interruption like
reading failure of master or writing error to targets, etc., the Red alarm will light up to
warn users. When finished successfully without any target failure, the Green alarm will
light to show operation is passed. If any failed target mixed with passed ones in the end
of operation, the Red and Green alarm will light up together. In the mean time, LCD
display will show message such as OK 14 NG 0 TOK 28. The numbers of OK xx
and NG xx mean the passed and failed target respectively for the operation just
finished. The number of TOK xxxxx means the total passed target for the current
function. It will be reset to zero if current function is changed or reboot of machine.
14.Machine can be reset and restored to factory default setting by pressing & holding the
Down (v) button and turn on the power of machine simultaneously. The Down (>)
button can be released when message of Clear setup is shown on the LCD display.
15.In case of trouble during operation, please always provide Logfile to Wytron for
evaluation. It can shorten the responding time and solution can be provided rapidly.
16.For TA-2200, user just needs to slide in the hard drive and close the door, no need to
connect the SATA cable manually. When door opens, the hard drive will be ejected.

Function
Main Menu
Main Menu includes functions that are normally used by users daily. To use these functions
correctly, please read the explanation listed below carefully:

Copy
This function performs duplication of masters full capacity to target hard drives of same size,
regardless of bus/models/brands. Due to copying whole capacity of master, it will take longer
time to finish the duplication process than Quick Copy does, especially for those masters with
very large capacity.
By Copy function, if capacity of target is LARGER than that of master, the targets capacity
will be shrunk to same as masters. In this case, the targets extra capacity may not be
recognized in PC if the hard drive settings (BIOS hardware configuration) in PC is set to
Auto. Since the data arrangements in this target is exactly copied from the master which
has entirely different parameters from that of target, in order to identify this target in PC, users
have to change manually corresponding settings of the hard drive in PCs BIOS parameter
such as head, cylinder, sector to match those of the master.
Any shrunken target can be restored to original capacity by Quick Erase function. Please
refer to the description of Quick Erase function in this manual.

Copy + Comp
In addition to Copy, this function performs additional full comparison between master &
targets when the Copy is finished. It will take longer time to finish the operation than Copy
function alone; almost double the time of Copy. Comparison is necessary for duplication that
requires high reliability and accuracy.
Same as Copy function, any shrunken target hard drives can be restored to their original
capacity by Quick Erase function since the first part of this operation is Copy function.

18

Wytron Technology Co., Ltd.

Compare
This function performs full comparison between master and target hard drive. If the target is
already copied successfully through Copy function and data integrity/accuracy needs to be
secured, running the Compare function additionally can fulfill this requirement.

Quick Copy
This function is used to copy only the data area from master to target hard drives. So-called
data area is the area with those data created/written by users but identified by machines
BIOS itself. It is applicable to master and target hard drives with same or different capacity (it
does not work if masters capacity is larger than that of target), same or different
bus/type/models/brands.
Quick Copy can copy from smaller capacity master to larger target hard drives effectively &
efficiently, even the targets are mixed with different sizes/bus/type/models/brands. The less
data stored in master, the less time will be taken to duplicate the data onto targets. It is most
suitable for PC manufacturers to replicate the pre-installed OS to the hard drives for PC.
By Quick Copy, free space (the space except identified data area) on master will not be
copied onto targets and, the free space on target hard drives (depends on data area of
master, each target may be different) will be left/remained intact in original format. Therefore,
if there is any confidential information kept originally in these target hard drives, there is
chance that the information will be revealed by special tools. So, for those target hard drives
which were used to be storage device for confidential usage such as in those PCs for
Government, Military unit or secured laboratory, etc., it is not suggested to use Quick Copy
function.
There are several types of Quick mode controlled by Quick data settings located under
Setup function. Each type of Quick mode manipulates the behavior of Quick Copy function to
satisfy different duplication requirement. As explained earlier, the data area is the area
identified/defined by the machines BIOS. If there is OS which is rare or not common or with
different partition structure that doesnt come to Wytrons knowledge, the machines BIOS
may fail to judge/locate the data area and then duplication will be failed as well. To
overcome such disadvantage, Wytron sets several Quick type to control different mode of
Quick Copy function. Please refer to Quick data for more information.
There are more detailed explanations on OS system and partition number in relation to Quick
Copy function in the section of Concept.

19

TA-2000/TA-2200 Hard Drive Duplicator

Q Copycomp
This function performs Quick Copy and Quick Compare of data area from master to target
hard drives with same or different size, same or different bus/type/models/ brands. Different
target hard drives can be mixed in same operation but capacity of all targets must be same or
larger than that of master (please also refer to Quick Copy function). After Quick Copy is
done, data area in targets will be compared immediately with those in master to ensure data
integrity/accuracy.
First part of Q Copycomp operation is Quick Copy function which is also controlled by Quick
data settings located under the Setup function. Please refer to Quick copy function and
Quick data settings for more detailed explanation.
Second part of Q Copycomp function is same as Quick Compare (Quick comp) function. It
will run data area comparison between master and target hard drives.
The less data in master, the less time will be taken to duplicate onto targets. Q Copycomp is
suitable for professional PC manufacturers who require speedy duplication and data
integrity/accuracy. However, Q Copycomp function will take roughly double of the time of
Quick Copy as comparison (data area) is performed after Quick Copy.
Similar to Quick Copy function, if there is any confidential information kept originally in these
target hard drives, there is chance that the information will be revealed by special tools. So,
for those target hard drives which were used to be storage device for confidential usage, it
is not suggest to use Q Copycomp function.

Quick Comp
This function performs comparison of only data area between master and those copied
targets that are replicated by Quick Copy function.

Select
This function will only be shown in the Main Menu when the DD image settings under
Setup is activated. This function performs several operations listed below.
1.
2.

When the Rename File is shown, users can press the GO button to enter and a blinking
cursor will be placed at the first digit of filename (8+3 format such as abcdefgh.xyz).
Users can change the digit by pressing the Up or Down button (range from 0~1, A~Z)
and GO button to confirm the choice for each digit. The cursor will be moved to next digit
when previous digit is chosen. After all digits are confirmed, the operation will go to file
selection mode (File) for next file selection.
When the Disk Usage is shown, users can press the GO button to enter and then the
LCD display will show the information of total and free spaces in Big Master. Press any
button will bring you back to file selection mode.
When the Disk Format is shown, users can press the GO button to pre-format the hard
drive connected to the machine as the Big Master. When formatting is finished (roughly
few seconds is required), the LCD display will show Pass and bring you back to the
Select function in Main Menu. If there is something wrong with the connected hard drive
and cannot be pre-formatted as the Big Master, there will be Error message on the LCD
display and bring you back to Select function in Main Menu.
Before running the Disk Format, please make sure the hard drive is new or there are no
21

TA-2000/TA-2200 Hard Drive Duplicator

valuable data/files stored in it. Any image files stored in the hard drive will be erased after
this operation is done and there is no way to recover them.
If there is no master image loaded previously in Big Master or a new unformatted hard
drive connected, the operation of Select File, Delete File and Rename File built under the
Select function will not be shown and only three operations will be shown which are Quit,
Disk Usage and Disk Format. Press the GO button when the Quit is shown on the LCD
will bring you back to Select in Main Menu.

Load
If the DD image settings under the Setup function is not activated, the Load function will not
be shown in the Main Menu.
Load function preloads the entire capacity of master hard drive and stores it as a master
image file in Big Master. It will work with major functions such as Copy, Copy + Compare,
Compare or also for Quick Copy, Q Copycomp and Quick Compare functions.
Operation (for six functions mentioned above) from master image file in Big Master
(preloaded by Load) to target hard drives is exactly the same as the operation of on-the-fly
that directly from master to target hard drives.

Quick Load
If the DD image setting built under the Setup function is not activated, the Quick Load
function will not be shown in the Main Menu.
Unlike the Load function to preload the whole capacity of master, Quick Load will identify the
masters data area and preload them as the master image file in Big Master. This master
image file will only work for Quick Copy, Q Copycomp and Quick Compare functions but not
for Copy, Copy+Comp or Compare since only identified/partial data area was preloaded.
When master image file preloaded by Quick Load is chosen as the current image file in
machine, LCD display will show you the error message if running Copy, Copy+Comp or
Compare funciton.
Operation (three Quick functions mentioned above) from master image file in Big Master
(preloaded by Quick Load) to target hard drives is exactly the same as the operation of onthe-fly that directly from master to target hard drives.

Wytron Technology Co., Ltd.

Quick Erase
This function will erase the FAT (File Allocation Table) area by specific code on target hard
drives by only taking less than 30 seconds. The master hard drive will not be erased /
overwritten even if connected to Master port on which is protected. Quick Erase can erase
those hard drives that cannot be re-configured on PC due to mess-up of data in FAT area.
Capacity of those shrunken target hard drives (originally with larger capacity) duplicated by
Copy or Copy + Comp function can be restored to their original capacity by this Quick Erase
function. The FAT area of these target hard drives will be cleaned/erased as well.

Verify
This function performs verification on target hard drives no matter they are of the same or
different size, same or different bus/type/models/brands. It will verify each bit of each target
until that with largest capacity is verified; verification of targets with smaller capacity will finish
earlier in the same run. This function will only verify if each bit of capacity is readable and
cannot verify correctness of data. It is a good tool to find out whether there is bad sector in
the targets or not.

Easy Erase
This function will overwrite physically to each bit of entire capacity of target hard drives by
using specific code. The master will not be erased/overwritten even if connected to master
port. Overwriting each bit of entire capacity of target hard drives by this function is actually
same as a real sequential write test. Among the Erase functions provided on machine, Easy
Erase is the simplest and quickest solution to wipe out data stored in target hard drives.

Strong Erase
This function will overwrite physically each bit of the entire capacity of target hard drives by
three specific codes in three different/sequential runs to ensure that data is 100% removed.
The master will not be erased/ overwritten even if connected to Master port. Overwriting each
bit of entire capacity of target hard drives by this function is similar to a real sequential write
test on target hard drives but it takes triple time of Easy Erase.

23

TA-2000/TA-2200 Hard Drive Duplicator

DoD Erase
This function overwrites physically to each bit of entire capacity of target hard drives by three
different specific codes in compliance with Federal Document of DoD 5220 in three different /
sequential runs. The master will not be erased/overwritten even if connected to Master port.
Overwriting each bit of entire capacity of target hard drives by this function is equal to a real
sequential write test on target hard drives but it takes triple time of Easy Erase.
To run three loops of overwriting onto targets is to ensure the data stored in target hard
drives will be 100% removed/cleaned and to prevent those data ever stored before from
being revealed or stolen for malicious purpose, especially for those hard drives installed in
PCs that were used before in Government, Military unit or data secured laboratory, etc..
To secure the data, it is strongly suggested to run the DoD Erase to overwrite entirely the
used hard drives that ever been installed in PCs of data secured units before using those
targets for any operation or before discarded.

DoD EraComp
This function, in addition to DoD Erase, will run an extra loop of data comparison for security
purpose. The master will not be erased/overwritten even if connected to Master port.
Overwriting each bit of entire capacity of target hard drives by this function is actually same
as a real sequential write test on target hard drives but it takes longer time than DoD Erase
does as full comparison is performed additionally to make sure entire capacity in targets is
100% cleaned.

NIS Erase
This NIS Erase function will overwrite physically each bit of the entire capacity of target hard
drives by three different specific codes in three different/sequential runs to ensure that data is
100% removed. The master will not be erased / overwritten even if connected to Master port.
Overwriting each bit of entire capacity of target hard drives by this function is similar to a real
sequential write test on target hard drives but it takes triple time of Easy Erase.

Quick test (Option)

This function performs random write, random read, sequential write, sequential compare for
specific data area in target hard drives. The data written onto the target hard drives is
assigned by Data pattern setting under Setup function. The testing area of this function will
cover the first 1GB capacity of target hard drives and please note that existing data in target
hard drives will be overwritten. The setting of Erase loop under Setup function will control the
running loop of this Quick Test function. Compare to Full Test function, Quick Test is a short
and brief test on target hard drives.

Full test (Option)

This function performs random write, random read, sequential write, sequential compare for
specific data area in target hard drives. The data written onto the target hard drives is
assigned by Data pattern setting under Setup function. The testing area of this function will
cover entire capacity of target hard drives. Please note that this Full Test belongs is a
destructive test and all existing data in target hard drives will be overwritten. The setting of
Erase loop under Setup function will control the running loop of this Full Test function.
Compare to Quick Test function, Full Test is a complete test on target hard drives whereas
Quick Test is a short and brief version.

Show Drives
Show Drives function will show, on the LCD display, the information of each connected hard
drive detected in the machines last operation. The information includes the model, brand and
also the version of each detected hard drive at respective port.

Sub menu
Sub menu function will lead/bring you to the Sub Menu by pressing the GO button. Setup
function in Sub Menu will be shown as the first function on the LCD display when entered.
Alternative way of entering into Sub Menu is by pressing the SET button on the LCD panel.
Press the SET button at any function in the Sub Menu will bring you back to Copy function in
the Main Menu.

25

TA-2000/TA-2200 Hard Drive Duplicator

Sub Menu
There are several functions that are not used frequently during normal operation, in order to
separate these functions from those commonly used and to avoid accidental modification,
they are grouped and placed in Sub Menu as below:

Setup
There are many settings built under Setup function, to manipulate and control the behavior of
operation in the machine to reach different requirement:

Quick Data
Quick Data setting controls the duplication action according to the data storing position
in master hard drive.
There are many different OS in the market with different partition arrangements and
combinations. We can change the setting manually to instruct/teach the machine on
how to operate correctly on those precise data storing position so as to shorten the
time required to analyse master and speed up operation of Quick functions involved,
such as Quick Copy, Q Copycomp and Quick Comp functions.
Options in Quick Data include, Keep, Blocks and Expand. All of them can be used
with the above-mentioned three Quick functions:
Keep
Keep option maintains the partition number and their sizes on the targets same as
that of master during Quick Copy. Even the targets have larger capacity than
master, the extra capacity will be left as free space and can be accessed for usage
by other OS or can be created as new partition manually.
Blocks
Two options of Blocks are available for use with Quick Copy:
Scanning block method:
For those unfamiliar OS system in the market that might not come to Wytrons
knowledge, normally it is not possible for customers to use the Quick function to
quick copy such OS system within short time, except to use Copy function which will
take much longer time. Via Scanning block method, customers might have chance
to do it. For this method, it is not necessary to make change for any setting but have
to use Fill Data and Scan Data in Sub Menu to accomplish it, accompanied with
Data Pattern setting under Setup function

26

Wytron Technology Co., Ltd.

Before using this scanning Block Quick Copy function (or hereinafter call it scanning
Block Copy), the maser hard drive must be handled specially by the following ways:
1. Execute Fill Data function to write (fill) special data pattern specified by Data
Pattern setting to each bit of a hard drive that will be used as the master hard
drive. If possible, it is better to fill more hard drives for preparation.
2. After finishing Fill Data, install the required OS system/software into this hard
drive from PC/System and then the master hard drive is created.
3. Double check this master to avoid mistake and unexpected trouble. Connect
master hard drive at Master1 port on machine and execute Scan Data function
to scan the data pattern filled by Fill Data and thus the location of real data
area (counter-data pattern) will be recorded.
4. After finishing the Scan Data, return to Quick Copy or Q Copycomp function to
quick copy the master onto target hard drives. You will find the word at upper
right corner on LCD display is changed to Blocks automatically.
5. Scanning block information done by Scan Data will not be lost even power of
machine is off but will be lost if master or function changed. You will have to run
the Scan Data again if such master is required for copy again.
Fixed block method:
After option for Quick Data is set to Blocks, one extra setting of Block size MB
will be shown under the Setup function, located right after Quick Data. Users may
set it to specific capacity that wish the Quick function to copy as the data range of
1/2/5/10/20/50/100/200/500/1000/2000/5000/10000 MB. When running the Quick
Copy or Q Copycomp function, only the specified data capacity assigned by Block
size MB will be copied/compared onto targets. For example, if option of 1000MB is
set in Block size MB, then the Quick Copy function will copy only the first 1000MB
and stop. This function is suitable for those hard drives that contain data only.
Expand
Expand, the factory default option for Quick Data, will expand the last partition on
larger targets (compared to master) to utilize their maximum available size during
Quick Copy. When the capacity of target hard drives are larger than that of master,
the extra capacity of each target will be merged into the last partition of respective
targets..

Drive Config
Drive Config setting controls the configuration of target hard drives themselves. Four
options are available: setmax protect, setmax master, DCO master and None.

setmax protect:
It is the factory default option which will make Quick copy function to copy as much
data as the machine can identify from master. For known software designed by third
party such as FirstwareTM of Phoneix, it will make a special partition (HPA, Hidden
Protected Area) either visible or invisible by OS which can store the recovering system
data. With this option, the original capacity of target hard drives will be maintained
27

TA-2000/TA-2200 Hard Drive Duplicator

under Quick operation such as Quick Copy or QCopycomp function and the format of
extra capacity will be controlled by Quick Data setting explained in last section.
setmax master:
This option will disable the scanning of special partition in special location and
machine will quick copy only the normal visible partition that regular OS will normally
create. For example, HPA in FirstwareTM of Phoneix will not be copied by this option
and targets capacity will be made/shrunk to the same as that of master. If larger target
hard drives are connected for Quick Copy operation with this setmax master option,
the targets capacity will be shrunk to the same capacity as that of master and users
cannot recover the original capacity on targets by themselves, except by running the
Quick Erase function to recover it.
For example, if master is 80GB and the target is 120GB, after the Quick Copy function
with setmax master option, this target hard drive will become 80GB, instead of original
120GB. Other spec. of this shrunken target such as LBA mode, Transfer mode, etc.,
will not be altered even they are originally different from those of master. To recover
the original 120GB on this shrunken target, connect it at target port on machine and
run Quick Erase function.
DCO master:
This option will also disable the scanning of special partition in special location and
machine will quick copy only the normal visible partition that regular OS will normally
create. For example, HPA in FirstwareTM of Phoenix will not be copied by this option
setting and targets capacity will be made/shrunk to the same as that of master. If
larger target hard drives are connected for Quick Copy operation, with this DCO
master option, the targets capacity will be shrunk to the same capacity as that of
master. And even the spec. (such as LBA mode, Transfer mode, etc.) of hard drive
itself will be altered to same as those of master, if the target hard drives support the
DCO feature.
Users cannot recover the original capacity on targets by themselves, except by
running Quick Erase function. For example, if master is 80GB and the target is 120GB,
after the Quick Copy function with DCO master option, this target hard drive will
become 80GB, instead of original 120GB. If original transfer mode of master is
UDMA66 and the target is UDMA100, the shrunken target will become UDMA66,
instead of original UDMA100. To recover the original 120GB on this shrunken target
and also the UDMA100 spec., connect it to target port on machine and run Quick
Erase. It will bring the original 120GB capacity and UDMA100 specification back to this
target.
None:
This option is similar to setmax protect option except that the scanning of special
partition in special location is disabled. The machine will quick copy only the normal
visible partition that regular OS will normally create. For example, if there is HPA
(designed in FirstwareTM of Phoenix) in master, Quick Copy function with this None
option will not copy the HPA partition but only copy those normal partitions created by
regular OS.

Wytron Technology Co., Ltd.

RAID support
RAID support activates duplication of hard drive components by group (every two
targets) in RAID#0 or RAID#1, especially for those RAID created by Intel chipsets
installed within PC motherboard that are common in the market. When RAID support is
activated, users can quick copy or copy the RAID#0 with 2 masters at same time in
one operation or RAID#1 in single master operation .
For RAID#0 with 2 masters, users can place them at Master1 and Target2 ports and
copy to respective targets (Target3 and Target4) as the first target RAID, Target5 and
Target6 will be another target RAID group and so on. Max. of 6 groups of target
RAID#0 (total 12 pcs target hard drives) can be copied in one operation. In the
meantime, duplication speed of RAID#0 will be twice that of normal one master
operation. Target15 port will not be used in RAID#0 duplication.
For duplicating the RAID#1, users only need to place either master at Master1 port and
can copy max. up to 7 groups of target (every 2 ports from Target2 to Target15, total
14 pcs target hard drive). Target2 and Target3 will be the first target RAID group in
RAID#1 which is different from RAID#0 where Target3 and Target4 are first target
RAID group.

Power Control
Power control setting has four options to control power output: Normal, PSW4, PSW4
6 sec. and always on.
The standard option is Normal which uses the standard ATX power supply to control
power output directly.
PSW4 power controller is not a standard device in machine. It is used specially to
supply the power to target hard drives separately in several stages. When using the
PSW4 power controller, you should change the option of this setting to PSW4
accordingly. If you are not only using the PSW4 power controller but also want to
separate the power output into stages of 6 seconds interval, set to PSW4 6 sec.. If you
need to have power output all the time for special purpose, change to always
on option.

Power On Wait
This setting controls the waiting time when the GO button is pressed prior to starting of
operation (real accessing from/to hard drives). The duration can be changed from 0
second to 12 minutes to stabilize the reading/writing situation. The default value is 15
seconds which means operation will only start 15 seconds after the GO button is
pressed. Some hard drives may need longer warm-up period prior to starting of
accessing data from them.
29

TA-2000/TA-2200 Hard Drive Duplicator

Power Off Wait

This setting controls the delay time when operation is finished. In most case, Power
Off Wait time is to wait for discs in hard drives to cease rotating so as to avoid damage
or improper impact between heads and discs. The default value is 15 sec.. Some very
large capacity or heavy duty hard drives (with higher power consumption & higher
rotation speed) may need longer delay time until the discs rotation is fully stopped.

Power Cycle
This setting controls the power output cycle. For example, if this function set to 15, it
means the power output from power supply to hard drives will be turned on and off
repeatedly for 15 times in short interval. This action will activate the Bypass Certify
function built-in in some new hard drives since some of them will be in certify mode for
first-time usage at very slow writing speed. Different cycle setting by trial and error will
be required for different brands of hard drive. The default setting is 0 and the power
supply will output the power normally.

Check same model

This setting controls the duplication on same model of hard drive. Set to Yes will
restrict the operation on same model/brand hard drives only to prevent mixing of
different models of hard drive during operation. Default setting is No to allow
duplication of different hard drives at same time.

Check same capacity

This setting controls checking capacity of connected hard drives to be exactly same
as that of master. If any of the targets capacity is not the same as masters, the
corresponding target will fail immediately at the stage of detecting hard drives and
only those targets with same capacity as master will be accepted for operation.
So-called same capacity means the real capacity such as 38952MB, not the 40GB
capacity arbitrately named by makers of hard drive.
Factory default option of this setting is NO.

Check same LBA mode

This setting controls the detection during duplication of same LBA spec. on target hard
drives with master. Yes option will detect target hard drives to see whether they are
equipped with the same LBA spec. as master or not. If the LBA spec. are not the same,
duplication will terminate as Failed. For example, if master is only equipped with
LBA-28 spec., the targets must equip with only LBA-28 spec. and cannot possess
LBA-48. Default option is No which will not detect the LBA spec. on target hard
drives.
30

Wytron Technology Co., Ltd.

Checksum mode
Checksum mode defines the type of calculated checksum used in machine during
operation of Quick Copy, Q Copycomp, Quick Comp, Copy, Copy + Comp, Compare,
etc.. Two types of checksum are provided, one is the CRC32 and the other is MD5.
The MD5 option provides 128 bits of long checksum calculation which will drop the
performance of machine by at least 20%. Default factory option of checksum is CRC32
which can also be restored when reset of machine is executed.

DD image
DD image option controls the activation of Big Master. When being set to Yes
option, the Select, Load and Quick Load functions will be shown in Main Menu for
selection. With No option, these functions will be hidden in Main Menu.

Large Heads
Three options, master, 255 and 240, are available for setting of head parameters.
There are various motherboards with different BIOS characteristics. For example,
When the BIOS of motherboard cannot identify the change of head 255 to 240 during
Quick Copy or Q Copycomp, users will have to change this setting manually so that
the targets can be recognized by the motherboards.

LBA48 support
This setting controls the support of Phoenix FirstwareTM 3.0 on large capacity hard
drives with LBA-48 command. Default is Yes where the duplicator is capable of
copying Firstware 3.0 from master onto those target hard drives with LBA-48
command. If the Firstware version on master hard drive is below version 3.0, please
set the option to No since versions of Firstware below 3.0 program are not
compatible with the target hard drives with LBA-48 command. For example, if your
master is installed with Firstware 2.0 or 2.5 (below 3.0), please change the LBA48
support function to No.

Data Pattern
This setting specifies the data that will be filled in by Fill Data function. Available
patterns are E5, F6, 00, FF, C9, 5A, A5, AA. The selected pattern will be
shown at right side of Fill Data for reminding purpose.

31

TA-2000/TA-2200 Hard Drive Duplicator

Erase loop
This setting controls the loop of erase when running function such as Easy Erase,
Strong Erase, DoD Erase and DoD EraComp. Default setting is 1 and can be
added up to 10.

SMART enable
This setting controls the detection of bad sector count recorded in hard drive itself.
Under Yes option, the duplicator will first activate the S.M.A.R.T. function on target
hard drives. Secondly, it will check whether the relocation table recorded in target hard
drive is 0 or not. Thirdly, it will check if the SMART status is pass or not. Any failure on
these three action will render duplication failure on target hard drive. The default
setting is No for this function.

Skip Read Error

This setting controls bypass of reading error in master hard drive during operation.
Normally the master hard drive must not contain bad sectors or bad tracks. Default
setting is No; operation of the machine will stop when there is reading error from
master. But in some situations, when the master hard drive is valuable and must be
kept for backup purpose, in reality, no matter how serious the damage is, the master
hard drive is valuable and must be kept for backup purpose. Users can set the option
to Yes to copy the problematic master. Corresponding error position in targets copied
from master will be filled with specific code.

Test loop
Test loop setting controls the number of running loop for Quick Test or Full Test
function in the machine.

Buzzer mute
Buzzer mute setting controls enable or disable of sound from buzzer. When it is ON,
the pressing of button will have sound.

Transfer mode
This setting specifies the data transfer rate. There are six options which are auto, PIO
3.3M, PIO 16M, DMA 16M, UDMA 33M, UDMA 66M and UDMA100.
The default option is auto which will identify and adjust automatically the transfer rate
according to the devices connected and detected by the machine. Some hard drives
with old or inferior specifications may respond with wrong parameters. In this
circumstance, adjust the option manually to lower transfer rate for these type of hard
drives.
32

Wytron Technology Co., Ltd.

Language
Several languages are available in machine and users can change this setting to
select your language requirement. Factory default option is English.

Show drives
Show drives setting can be used to display the information of each hard drive
connected to the machine in last operation, such as model & version. Users can also
select this function after duplication to display the information of detected hard drives.

Change Password
This setting restricts unauthorized person to use the duplicator. Once set, password
is required to boot up the machine. Therefore, only those users who know the
password can use the duplicator. Factory default option is No.
The password has 4 digits. Press the MODE button to Yes to activate the Change
Password setting and quit by pressing the GO button. LCD display will prompt
message of New Password? and then ask you to input the digit for Password 1.
Users can press the Up (^) and Down (v) buttons to select the number as
Password 1 and after selection, press GO button to quit. Message of Password 2
will be shown on the LCD display and you can select the second digit as you have
done for Password 1. Input two more digits for Password 3 and 4 in samy way.
After completion of changing password, machine will save 4-digit password into the
memory. Hereinafter, in each time of booting, machine will ask to input the current
password for identification or need to change the password again.
Password can be changed again by Yes option to the Change Password setting
but the current password must be input correctly first. If user wants to disable the
password function, simply set the password to 0000 (0000 cannot be set as
password).
Wrong password input during booting of machine will cause hang up of duplicator.
User must restart the machine to input correct password or, Reset the machine to
clear the password.

Startup Command
This setting specifies the first function available for execution after booting of machine.
It will save time for operator to switch to the required function repeatedly every time
after turning on the machine.

33

TA-2000/TA-2200 Hard Drive Duplicator

Save setup
Save setup setting will save the changes upon each setting under Setup and bring you
out of Setup function. Leaving the Setup function without going through the Save setup
will lose the changes to the setting that you have modified. Press the Set button at
either setting under Setup will also work for saving the changes and leaving the Setup
function.

Scan Data
This function must be used with Block setting in Quick data.
It performs scanning & keeping of the specific data that assigned by Data Pattern in the
master hard drive.
For scanning data, the master hard drive that needs to be scaned should be placed in any
one of the target slots and just only one hard drive should be connected.
When finishing scanning, go to Quick Copy or Q CopyComp function to start duplication. The
location information of the specific data area stored in the machines memory will disappear if
the machine is switched off. Operator will have to run the Scan Data function again if the
Block Quick Copy is required again.

Fill Data
This function performs the specific data filling operation to each bit in the hard drives that is
intended to be used as master hard drives. The specific data is assigned by Data Pattern
setting under Setup function.

Burn in
This function performs a burn-in copy operation to test the motherboard of the duplicator. It is
used in the factory before shipment, not for end users.

say 50MB, on it and make it the primary partition. Format this partition and store the
xxxxxxx.bin file in the root directory. Connect the hard drive to the master port of
machine and select Update function. Press GO button and the machine will detect the
BIOS program from the master hard drive and perform upgrade automatically.
Machine will reboot itself when completion of upgrade process. Do not turn off the
machine during updating process or you will need to change the BIOS chipset
manually to save your machine.

Main menu
Main menu function will lead/bring you to the Main Menu by pressing the GO button. Copy
function in Main Menu will be shown as the first function on the LCD display when entering
the Main Menu. Alternative way of entering into Main Menu is by pressing the Set button on
the LCD panel. Press the GO button at any function in the Sub Menu will bring you back to
Copy function in the Main Menu.

35

TA-2000/TA-2200 Hard Drive Duplicator

Reset
Machine can be reset to the factory default option by pressing & holding the Down (v) button
and turn on the power of machine simultaneously. The Down (>) button can be released
when the message of Clear setup is shown on the LCD display.

Big Master
When using the Big Master feature, users must first activate the setting of DD image under
the Setup function to bring up those hidden functions such as Select, Load and Quick Load
which are only used for Big Master feature.
After activating the DD image, one hard drive must be used as Big Master to store preloaded
master images. This hard drive must be initialized / formatted by using the Disk Format
operation built under the Select function. The whole steps of using Big Master are listed
below:
1. Activate the DD image setting beneath the Setup function to Yes.
2. Connect a new hard drive with very large capacity to Master1 port on machine.
3. Run the Disk Format operation beneath the Select function to setup the Big Master.
4. Switch the function to Load or Quick Load function first. Then put master hard drive that
intended for preloading at any target port on machine and press the GO button to
proceed the preloading (Please refer to Load and Quick Load to choose appropriate
loading function.). If there are different master hard drives connected at other target
ports, the master at first target port connected with hard drive (smaller target number,
e.g., Target2) will be used for preloading and all other masters will be idle during
preloading from Target2 master.
To preload master hard drive into Big Master, it is strongly suggested to switch to Load
or Quick Load function first and then connect required master hard drives at target
ports. This can avoid the accident of switching to functions other than Load and Quick
Load pressing the GO button will overwrite all the master hard drives connected to
target ports. This will be a disaster as all masters will be overwritten by current master
image in Big Master.
5. After preloading, original master at target port can be removed. The master image
preloaded just now will be the current image file in the machine and is ready for
operation. You can switch to Quick Copy or other functions and connect target hard
drives at target ports for operation. If there are already many master images stored in

Monitoring from PC
Operation of machine can be monitored by any communication program on PC through PCs
COM port with linkage to the built-in RS-232 port on TA-2000.
The linkage can be done through the RS-232 cable shipped with TA-2000. Before making the
linkage, switch off both the power of the TA-2000 and PC. Connect one end of the cable
to the COM port on duplicator and the other to the COM1 or COM2 port on PC. The
monitoring software used on PC can be any communication program or the Super Terminal
program built-in in Microsoft Windows system.
Open the Super Terminal program in Microsoft Windows XP, there will be a window pop-up
to ask you to create a new linkage by specifying a name, say LOG for example. When the
name is input, another window will pop-up again asking for Country, Phone & Communicating
port, etc. Change the setting of communicating port to the correct port that connects to the
duplicator (COM1 or COM2 port). Press Yes when the setting is finished. There will be
another window pop-up to configure the communication parameters: use 9,600 baud rate as
the transfer rate, 8 for data length, None for parity check, 1 stop bit and none for flow control.
With these settings, you should receive the message shown on the Terminal window through
the RS-232 connection form the duplicator in operation.
Also you can store all the information into a text file. Click the Transfer above the Terminal
window and select the Capture text function (Be noted that it is not the ******.HT extension
format). Name the text file and confirm by Yes. Please always send this text file to us by email for quick evaluation of the problem occurred in duplication.
Step 1: Run the program of Hyper Terminal in Windows 2000/XP or Terminal in Windows
98/ME.

Step 2: Name the profile for connection in pop-up Connection Description window.
Hereinafter, the profle name will be stored in the directory of HyerTerminal and can
be used directly/repeatedly.:

Step 3: Change the port option of Connect using according to the real port you use on PC
to connect with duplicator. HyperTerminal will not receive any output message from
duplicator if with wrong setting.

Step 4: Set the Port setting as baud-rate 9600 for Bits per second, 8 for Data bits, None for
Parity, 1 for Stop bit and None (or Hardware) for Flow control and then press OK.

Step 5: Though you may see the message directly in HyperTerminal, its buffer is small and
the captured message might be gone if you dont capture/store it into the logfile. So,
capturing the message into logfile is always suggested and please set the capturing
by selecting the Transfer function in the function menu and then the Capture Text
in the pull-down bar.

Step 6: Name the logfile and/or assign the location to store the captured logfile by pressing
the Browse button. When all set, press Start button in pop-up windows of Captured
Text to start the capturing.

Step 7: Turn on the power of duplicator and the messages such as model number, BIOS
version, etc., will be shown in the HyperTerminal. Many customers turn on the power
before setting the capturing of logfile, this will cause the captured message
incompleted, missing valuable information such as BIOS version, model number, etc.

Step 8: Arrange correctly the necessary physical connection of master and target hard drives
on duplicator and then press GO button to start the operation. While the operation is
started, detailed operation message will be output to the HyperTerminal.

Step 9: After finishing the operation, you may end the capturing of logfile by pressing the
Transfer function in function menu and then the Capture Text in the pull-down bar
to Stop the capturing. Captured logfile will be stored in the specified location you
assigned in Step 5 and you may use the WordPad, one of the bundled software in
Windows XP, to view logfile correctly (Notepad in Windows XP is not compatible to
view the logfile). Be noted, in the middle of a long, normal operation, duplicator may
not output signal to HyperTerminal and if the PC enters the sleeping mode during the
catpuring, the output message might be lost since the connection is interrupted.
