BEDFORDSHIRE MEMORY WALK 2015

Autumn is in the air and that can only mean one

thing: its time for Bromham Apple Day! This
homage to the humble apple is one of our favourite
events of the year; where else can you watch ferret
racing while drinking calvados? Also this month were
bringing you the BedPop Fun Palaces. Were really
excited that Bedford is taking part in this nationwide
celebration of art, culture and science and you can find
out how to take part on page three. Have you caught
any of the offerings from Bedford Film Festival so far?
The festival continue this month with fringe screenings
and a very special event at the Quarry at St Lukes on
21 October. Theres more info on page 10.
As usual, pages 6 and 7 feature our essential edit of the months events, so if youre in
need of inspiration, take your pick from our October choices.
Finally, congratultions to Chris and Kate Temple, the new custodians of Goldings.
Weve interviewed them for this months Unique Bedford feature on page 11 and were
certain youll join us in wishing them well for the future. Use it or lose it, Bedford!

DOES A YOUNG
PERSONS FUTURE
LIE BEHIND YOUR
FRONT DOOR?

YMCA Bedfordshire is committed to helping young people

achieve their potential and believes that everyone should have
the opportunity in life to make a difference and build towards a
brighter future. Of course, for some young people, their family
circumstances might prevent this and thats why the YMCA
developed the Supported Lodgings Scheme; finding homes in the
community, for the community.
It is our opinion that in a world of adversity and challenge,
family is extremely important, said Sarah Collins of YMCA
Bedfordshire. Families today often look a lot different to even
just a few generations ago; they can come in all sorts of shapes
and forms; but the good ones all have common characteristics;
they are a safe harbour in the storm, show love in the face of
difficulty and welcome in the lonely. Healthy families are kind
and unifying; they live by example and are quick to forgive.
We have noticed that care leavers and vulnerable young people
today can find themselves lonely, in poor housing situations and
struggling with education or employment. They often face a
challenging transition into adult life. We want put an end to this
downward spiral and create sustainable solutions.
Supported Lodgings depends on people in the community
who have a spare room to invite a young person into their
home. Offering a roof over their head could change their
future forever. Therefore, we encourage you to ask yourself
the questions: Do I want to make a difference? Could I host a
young person in my home?
If you answered yesthe YMCA would love to speak to
you. Hosts are provided with vetting checks and training
and are matched with suitable young people. For more
information go to www.ymcabedfordshire.org or email
sarah.collins@ymcabedfordshire.org

HOWARD READ PRESENTS

ANNABELLES SKIRTINGBOARD ADVENTURE

28 October 2.30pm. Tickets: 10 (concessions 7). Age guidance: 3+
Howard Read, creator of the hugely successful LITTLE HOWARD shows, brings to Bedford Annabelles Skirtingboard Adventure, his brand
new theatre show for young children which combines animation, film and music, all created live before the audience.
On stage is the furniture from a childs bedroom, and Arthur, a boy whos stuck at home, bored and wants an adventure. With the help of the
audience, he imagines a tiny elephant called Annabelle, and her friend Icarus the moth. Initially, Arthur cant understand Annabelle. She just
sounds like someone trying to talk through a trumpet (to be exact, she sounds like the musician Steve Pretty trying to talk through a trumpet).
But, with the help of the audience, Arthur, Annabelle and Icarus start to understand each other.
And the best thing is, when youre as tiny as Annabelle a little bedroom becomes a huge mountain range. So the quest to reach the top of the
bookshelf begins!

SPEAR OF DESTINY
POST-PUNKERS, SPEAR OF DESTINY ARE RETURNING TO
BEDFORD THIS OCTOBER. LLOYD LUGSDEN CALLED UP
KIRK BRANDON TO ASK HIM SOME QUESTIONS:
Bedford Clanger: Can we expect any new material?
Kirk Brandon: Weve got a new EP out in October
plus stuff from last year plus of course all of the
classics, spanning 30 plus years and a few tracks
from the archives.

BC: Recommend a book?

KB: 1984 by George Orwell (Rob Birch of Stereo
MCs chose this too in the last Issue of Clanger).
It eerily predicted things as they are today,
surveillance, wars in the Middle East.

BC: Memories of Bedford?

KB: yeah, a good crowd - edgy

BC: Youre famous for your blonde hair. Ever had

black hair?
KB: Ha ha! Yeah, for about a week, my wife
didnt like it, said I looked sinister, so I went back to
blonde - always take their advice!

BC: Oh?
KB: yeah, good, lively, not like in London sometimes,
where they just stand there quiet. Good guys, the
promoters in Bedford (Kirk starts laughing) there was
one time we played Bedford way back and a chap got
on stage and took all of his clothes off! Im all for
freedom of expres-sion but! He was escorted off and
stood by the bar naked!
BC: Were there any other names in the running before
Spear of Destiny? (named after a bibli-cal painting, art
history fans)
KB: Yes. I chose Russian State Circus topical at the
time...but it was done on votes in the band. And Stans
choice SOD came up.
BC: Best decade for music?
KB: Id say late 70s to 80s, when punk got more
experimental, not just the three chords...

Oxjam Bedford will take place on Saturday October 24th on five stages around town at Esquires,
The Bedford Arms and The Pad. Rhiannon Shades, a media lecturer at Bedford College, is this years
Oxjam Bedford Takeover Manager. She said: I love the local music scene and the Oxjam festival is a
massive part of that Bedfords live music fans love it and every year they look forward to it.
The full Oxjam lineup is yet to be announced, but it is sure to highlight the quality and diversity of
live music in Bedford. Were still always looking for acts, said Rhiannon. If we get more acts
we get more venues, so please get in touch if your band would like to perform.
Of course, the easiest way to get involved is to buy a wristband and go along to support the bands on
the day. As Rhiannon says: Oxjam has always been a great festival with local music, but global impact.
Pre-sale tickets are available to buy for 8 from Dannys Bar at Esquires and The Oxfam Shop

The picturesque setting of Bromham Mill is once again the

Griffith, a unique vocalist with echoes of Sandy Denny & Janis
Joplin and deliciously rustic fiddle playing is appearing alongside Will Hampson, offering driving melodeon and dancing.

to watch this duo in an intimate setting with fine local food and
beers on offer as well. For more information check out the Mil
Wheel Playhouse Facebook page. 10th October, tickets 8 from
Bromham Mill or tel: 07580 183205

BC: New bands youd recommend?

KB: Yes, a while ago I produced an album for a group
called Folk Grinder. Theyre just great! Bangor, fiddles
and skiffle, really original, check them out...
BC: Looking forward to playing Whitby Halloween?
KB: Oh yes, its sold out a 2000 capacity ballroom,
and the people are always so nice there...
BC: And finally, favourite meal?
KB: King Prawn Balti hot! You did ask!

J.M.W TURNER
& THE ART OF
WATERCOLOUR

10th October 2015 10th April 2016

This autumn, for the first time, all nine of Bedfords watercolours by J.M.W
Turner will be displayed together. The exhibition spans Turners career,
showing the development of his unique, unparalleled work, from Cote House
near Bristol, painted when Turner was aged just 16 and already a skilled
draughtsman and watercolourist, to The Town and Lake of Thun, painted
during the final phase of his career, when he produced some of his most
innovative works.
One of the highlights of Bedfords Turner collection is The Great Falls
of the Reichenbach, painted in 1804. At over a metre tall it is a spectacular
exhibition watercolour and a technical tour de force; Turner had by this point
in his career broken free of traditional methods. Working on a large scale
allowed him to depict the soaring perspectives he had witnessed on his tour
of Switzerland in 1802.
The Reichenbach Falls are the scene of the final showdown between
Sherlock Holmes and his nemesis, Moriarty. The painting has developed
added significance in recent years, appearing in the BBC series Sherlock
and recently returning from the Museum of London, where it was the final
exhibit in their blockbuster exhibition Sherlock Holmes The Man Who
Never Lived and Will Never Die.
Alongside the works by J.M.W Turner there will be an exhibition drawn
from the internationally renowned watercolour collection held at The Higgins
Bedford, including some of the great names from this enduring medium. It
includes works by Edward Dayes, Thomas Hearne and John Robert Cozens,
who enhanced the young Turners vision, to his contemporaries Thomas Girtin
and John Sell Cotman. Also featured will be works by some of the artists who
followed in his footsteps, through the 19th century and up to 20th century
watercolourists such as Paul Nash & David Jones.

Theres a nip in the air, the leaves are turning

and the nights are drawing in, which can only
mean one thing: Apple Day! Bromham Mill and
Gallery hosts their hugely popular annual Apple
Day this year on Sunday 18th October, from
11am - 4.30pm.
Thousands of visitors are expected to attend the
event which celebrates all things apple related. As
always there will be a wide selection of food and
drink, including local apple juice and cider, lots
of fun-filled family activities, morris dancing and
local bands will be performing throughout the day.
If you have an unidentified apple from your
garden, experts will be on hand to identify the
variety and provide tips and advice. Bromham
Mills Caf at the Mill will also be offering a
range of cakes alongside stalls selling everything
from jams and chutneys to fudge and pumpkins.
Entry to Bromham Mills Apple Day is 5

Poirot star and Olivier Award winner David Suchet returns to the West End as

you laugh out loud!
Two bachelor friends, the adorable dandy Algernon Moncrieff (Philip Cumbus

their deceptions - and with the formidable Lady Bracknell (David Suchet - Hercule

GISELLE

A performance of Giselle by the world-renowned Bolshoi Ballet will be

screened on Sunday 11 October.
The young peasant girl Giselle dies when she learns that the man she
loves, Albrecht, has betrayed her. Against her will, she joins the wilis,
vengeful spirits who now turn against Albrecht and condemn him to
dance until he dies of exhaustion. This gem of Romantic ballet is one of
the oldest and greatest in the classical repertoire, touching upon the great
Romantic themes: a doomed love affair ending in tragedy, a dive into
fantasy, and ultimate redemption through the power of love. The Bolshoi
is renowned for its intimate and emotionally intense interpretation of this
beloved drama.

Its 10 minutes from Bedford to Cople in the car. It says so on the Dog House Kitchen
website. Its 25 minutes by bike from Castle skirting the marina, following the river, taking
the bridle path on the right which leads you straight to the Georgian house. The setting is
bucolic: horse in the field, apple trees and chickens in the large garden. When we arrive its
7.30 and most of the diners are already seated in the pop-up restaurant. This is an event which
happens twice a month, Liz in the kitchen, Chris the matre d, a friend or two helping out.
The pop-up restaurant is in a long outhouse: view of an enviable garden, a sense of
permanence, a feeling akin to sitting in a dining carriage on some long-forgotten continental express. We order a small glass of the house red, with an eye on the rhubarb and
custard martini. The house wine is as good as any and, unless youre a wine buff, I say
stick with it at a very reasonable ten quid a bottle.
Starters arrive within a few minutes of sitting down. Weve already ordered three
choices for starters and main and everyone has emailed in their pick for the evening.
Weve skipped the chicken liver parfait served with oatcakes and home-made chutney
and gone for a tomato and herb salad and melanzane alla parmigiana. The latter is
made of oven-baked layers of griddled aubergine with tomato sauce and parmesan
cheese. Its straight out of the oven and has that wonderfully pungent mix of ruby red
and dark yellow. The salad consists of sun-ripened tomatoes, macerated red onions and
home-made vinaigrette. Its fresh, cleansing and cool.
We order the martini between courses. It arrives with a sugared rim and a boiled sweet
rhubarb and custard at the bottom of the glass. The dry vermouth reins in the sweetness
and the balance between childhood and grown-up is perfectly maintained. For main course
weve ordered a butternut squash risotto and chicken puttensca. The ox cheek carbonnade,
braised in Belgian beer with bacon and root vegetable looks stunning and, until my main
arrives, I wonder if I should have been more adventurous. But the chicken breast appears,
smothered in a rich tomato sauce, and second thoughts vanish. The plate is dressed with
garlic roast potatoes and green beans, all artfully casual, all Italian and Elizabeth David in
taste: a deep, sonorous dish with the best of British ingredients. The risotto, with crispy sage
leaves, is wholesome, delicious and worthy of Brightons Terre-a-Terre.
Then theres the perfect palette-cleansing apple sorbet with a shot of bramble liquor
apples from the garden, liquors homemade and then were on to dessert. Lucy nabs
the salted caramel chocolate pot and Im left with the apple & blackberry pavlova. Im
far from hard done by and throughout the dinner weve been thanking our lucky stars.
To picture the Dog House Kitchen think Georgian house, think the final of Masterchef.
See Chris and Liz to enjoy the best of British fare, to be inspired by their cooking and
their produce. The last thing we try is a shot of their gingerbread liquor - one for the
bridle path which, after such a glorious evening, looks awfully dark.

THI UPDATE

Bedford High Street has seen a lot of activity recently, not least through the investment of the
THI initiative. Recently completed projects include the double front of 99 101 and Gunns
bakery at number 51. The building work at 99 101 was carried out on both properties at
the same time, despite having different owners. The work includes the reinstatement of the
historic stone colonnade plus restoration of the beautiful brickwork on the upper floors.

At number 51,
Gunns Bakery home to
the original Bedfordshire
Clanger has taken up
residence. The shop
boasts a refurbished
1920s granite and
bronze frontage.

Sir Frank Whittle, the inventor of the jet engine, is a name
we all remember, but he would not have been able to fly
without Bedfords (WILFRED) GEORGE CARTER, who was
commissioned by the Ministry of Aircraft in the Second World
War to design a brand new aircraft for Whittles engine, the result
was the Gloster E. 28/29 Pioneer.
George Carter was born in 1889 at Howbury Street, the son
of a journeyman carpenter/builder. Twelve years later the young
George together with his parents and younger sister Gladys
were living at 101 Tavistock Street, with his cabinet maker
grandfather. He was probably educated at Harpur Central,
becoming an apprentice at W H Allen at age seventeen and was
at the works when the generators were made for the Titanic. In
1912 aged twenty-three he changed jobs to work on the design
of internal combustion engines and transmission units for the
Saunderson Tractor and Implement Co, Elstow Works, Ampthill
Road. In 1915 he started his career in the aircraft industry by
becoming chief draughtsman at Sopwith Aviation, Kingston on
Thames, designing the Sopwith Schneider. This was a racing
seaplane for the first post-war Schneider Trophy, to be held at
Bournemouth in 1919, it was the fastest entry, but the race was
called off because of fog. The Sopwith Company struggled after

The Cochin

the War and was wound up in September 1920. Carter came

back to Bedford to WH Robertsons on Ampthill Road, returning
to aircraft, as chief designer at Hawker Engineering in 1923,
getting the Woodcock fighter into production, the first British
fighter after the War and also working on the Horsley bomber.
Resigning in 1925, he returned again to Robertsons for six
months, then joining the de Havilland Company for the design
of the DH77 interceptor, another high performance monoplane
with a new engine. Carter moved to Gloster Aircraft Company
in 1927 taking over as their chief designer in 1937. On a visit in
April 1939, he was unimpressed by Frank Whittles Power Jets
Company, but in September the Air Ministry issued Gloster with
the order for the worlds first jet powered prototype, carrying
Whittles engine. The resulting E.28/39 designed by Carter, flew
for the first time on 15 May 1941 for 17 Minutes at Cranwell.
He went on to design its successor the famed twin engine Gloster
Meteor, the first jet aircraft in operational service. A total of 3875
Meteors were built, in over 34 versions, for 14 different nations
and it changed the course of military aviation across the world.
In 1947 he was awarded the CBE for his work on jet aircraft and
received the Royal Aeronautical Societys silver medal. He died in
1969 aged 79.

21 October 2015 is the future date that Marty McFly travels to in the Back to the Future series, and has been dubbed
as Back to the Future Day by fans across the world with events planned to celebrate reaching the date. The event
itself will include Paul Kerensas comedy set, Back to the Futon Pt 2 followed by a screening of Back to the Future.
In between there will be Back to the Future related activities and maybe a few surprises along the way too.

A SURPRISE UK PREMIER FOR

BEDFORD FILM FESTIVAL
Bedford Film Festival is well underway after an incredible
opening weekend, which saw a UK premier come to Bedford.
The audience at the opening screening, A Walk in the Woods, were told they were part of a UK
premier by co-founding Director Paul Hutchinson: We received a call early this morning to tell
us that this is the first public screening of this film in the UK. Were so pleased weve brought the
UK premier of a major new film to Bedford.
Launching as part of Bedford Film Festival too is Cults for Cats a joint project with The Pad
Nightclub and Chloe Tilford. Were really excited about Cults for Cats, adds Paul. Chloe has
worked really hard to select some cult classics, starting with The Big Lebowski on 26 September.
The screenings will continue monthly, with Scream at Halloween and Elf and Die Hard at
Christmas. The screenings will raise funds and awareness for animal charity Cats Protection.

GARDENING: PERFECT POTS FOR EVERY POCKET

BY JANE PERRONE @JANEPERRONE
PERRONE.BLOGS.COM

It seemed like a good idea at the time: just pop into the garden
centre, pick up a few plants and spring bulbs to stick in a pot
for a display that lasts through winter and into spring. But
youre sidetracked by the fudge, charmed by the chickens and
befuddled by the rainbow array of tulips: you end up cowering
in the cafe with a tea and a carrot cake and leaving without a
single plant.
But just like making a cake, you can follow a recipe for
planting up a container. Here are three recipes for pots that will
see you through to late spring, with a couple of minutes of care
a week. Theyre all designed to be tough enough to survive the
winter and come out fighting in spring: choose a sheltered spot,
though, to protect them from the worst extremes of wet and cold.

Edible and upcycled

Total cost (including container) 20

Thyme Archers Gold x 2
Viola Black Delight x 6 plug plants
Lettuce Bloody Warrior
Crocus Grand Maitre
Crocus Jeanne DArc
A fancy pot at a garden can cost upwards of 20: save your
cash and upcycle something that started life as a metal bucket,
a bin or a basket (if its particularly holey, line it with an old
woollen jumper or some plastic sheeting). I bought an old metal
tool box from Bargain Alley on Castle Road for 2: it had some
holes in the corners, but if yours is watertight, drill some in. I
also added a layer of grit at the bottom to aid drainage.
This is an edible display, excepting the white and purple
crocus that should poke up in February and March, once
the lettuce is either all eaten or looking the worse for wear
- they most definitely arent something to be chomping on.
I dug up some lettuce seedlings from my veg patch, but any
colourful lettuce will do. Heres a cheat - buy a pack of lettuce
still rooted in compost from one of the supermarket veg
aisles, tease the seedlings apart and plant them. If you arent
interested in a harvest, you could substitute with colourful
ornamental cabbages (which look good, but you cant eat).

10

Pretty in pink

Total cost (for two pots) 25

Bugle Black Scallop x 2
Wallflower Sugar Rush Purple x2
Tulip Shirley x 10
Heather Lilli x1
Pink or red are great choices over winter: warming colours
that glow out of the gloom. The dusky pink of the wallflower
and heather Ive chosen match the tulip, which is white with
a rosy edge. Bugle is a fab container plant with dark purple
leaves, but its also great as ground cover, so once the tulips
have gone over, replant it anywhere you want to clothe bare
soil. Tulips should be planted deep: at least 30cm, so plant
them first then add the other plants on top, leaving some space
between for the bulb stems to come through. Heathers like
acidic soil so add a few handfuls of ericaceous compost or
some sulphur chips to your normal compost if you can
be bothered.
If you do want to buy new containers, nows not a bad
time, as garden centres want to offload their summer stock
and concentrate on vital gardening items such as, er, dancing
Santas. I bought these two terracotta-look fibreglass pots in the
Wilkinson sale for 5 each. They are frostproof to -5C and are
lighter to move about than real terracotta - and more durable.

Tough and green

Total cost 15 (not including the pot)

Harts tongue fern x2
Trailing ivy x2
Euonymus Kathy x 1
Tulip Spring Green x 8
If youre looking for a display that is tough and classy, and
wont let you down even if you neglect it, this is the one for
you: the green and cream foliage will stay fresh throughout,
and the green and white tulips will arrive to add a new accent
in spring. The green glazed pot is one from my garden. This
pot is also the most enduring, and could potentially last several
years, provided you keep it well watered and fed. Once the
plants outgrow the pot, they could be planted in a shady border.

THE BEDFORD CLANGER

UNIQUE BEDFORD:
GOLDINGS

It is with great relief that we can confirm that recent reports of Goldings demise have
been greatly exaggerated. While the current custodian (well explain that significance
later) Vic Warner will definitely be retiring at some point he is handing the reins of
Bedfords favourite High Street shop onto Kate and Chris Temple to carry on the tradition.
I always intended to sell the business as a going concern, said Vic.
Ive worked here for 55 years and it was never going to close. Goldings
is a household name in Bedford and Ill be the first to wish Kate and
Chris every success for the future.
However, its not just Bedfordians who love the shop. We often have
day-trippers popping in during their visit to the town to see the Higgins and
John Bunyan Museums. They always comment on how lovely it is to see a
proper old-fashioned ironmongers nowadays. And we couldnt agree more!
We wondered what was the most unusual item in stock? Every department
has something obscure, said Vic (with barely disguised pride). Theyre too
numerous to mention. The kitchenware department is the most popular,
particularly traditional cleaning products, followed by general ironmongery
and key cutting. Airfix kits are as popular as ever and Vic says there has been
a revival in the last few years that we for one will be joining.
So, what is it that has allowed Goldings to weather the storms of
numerous recessions and the rise of the out of town superstores. Chain
stores dont have the breadth of stock that we have, says Vic. We are
able to hold more unusual products, so customers know that when they
come here, theyll definitely find what they need, no matter how quirky.
We are also renowned for our customer service and product knowledge.
A lady had just moved to Bedford and the first thing she was told was that
she just had to go to Goldings to get everything she needed. Wise words!

New owner, Chris has a connection to Goldings, as he previously

worked on the model making counter 15 years ago. A friend had posted
something on the We Are Bedford facebook page to say that Goldings
was up for sale, he says. I was immediately bombarded by friends and
family telling me to buy it. Kate and I contacted Vic, had a chat about our
plans and here we are. Were hoping to do Vic proud and will be retaining
the charm of the shop while introducing 21st century technology.
Were not the owners of Goldings, says Kate. Were merely the
custodians of a very well respected and cherished institution. It belongs
to Bedford, not us.

FALL INTO
MUSIC

By our regular columnist and fabulous singer/songwriter,

Kristine Hughes
There are TWO great music series beginning in Bedford this fall
(as we Americans like to say). Jacqui Dankworth, locally loved
jazz vocalist, has curated a jazz music series called A Song For
You. I attended the first one in September featuring young talent
Alice Zawadski and I can say you will enjoy any of the nights you
attend. The next one is October 2 and features Natalie Williams
and Charlie Wood. There are two further dates in November and a
Christmas charity gala in December. Visit www.quarrytheatre.org.
uk for more information.
The other series is for the more intimate music experience at The
Place Theatre with a folk, Americana, singer/songwriter feel. The
BIG House Concert series features one unforgettable show a season
bringing audiences an artist that you might find at the Stables.
Carefully chosen for their ability to embrace the house concert
vibe, the launch date is October 13th and features the exquisite
stylings of songwriter/storyteller, Jonathan Byrd. You do not want
to miss it. Supported by local artist, My Girl The River, find out
more at www.theplacebedford.org.uk. These music series aim to
draw people into two great local theatres, both offering a slightly
different feel to their programmes. I suggest booking early for both.

RIVERSIDE TENNIS CLUB

Just when you think that summer is over and the tennis season
is coming to a close, were busy getting ready for another
season of tennis undercover in our bubble and were firing up
the floodlights as the nights draw in.
The Autumn season has just started and there is plenty
happening at Riverside for all the family to get involved in.
Weve once again hooked up with the local Council and are
running 7 x Re-Active8 sessions for adults of all ages and
standards this term. These include two sessions of Cardio
Tennis which is a great fitness session to melt calories and
whack balls around! There is a real mix of players that join the
club as members and plenty of opportunities to get on court
whatever your level. Get in touch with us if you want to find
out what we can do to help you get on court with.
For kids, we run training seven days a week for players
aged from three upwards. The youngest players learn their
FUNdamentals on smaller courts with low bouncing balls
for wicked fun. Our squads for junior players training on

the full size court follow a bi-weekly theme which ensures

that no stone is left unturned throughout the year. If youre
into competitive play, we run junior friendly matches every
Monday evening and organise more formal events every
Saturday.
Diary date #9 Clanger fans - throughout the October Half

THE LAST WORD

BY REVEREND SHARON GRENHAM-THOMPSON,
PRISON CHAPLAIN, HMP BEDFORD
When I heard that this
months edition of the
Clanger was all about
Fun Palaces I had two
immediate thoughts
flash through my mind.
The first was that
Madness song from
the 80s, which went
welcome to the House
of Fun, now Ive come of
age, welcome to the lions
den and the other was
Benedict Cumberbatchs
Sherlock who solves
crimes by visiting his
Mind Palace.
Well the Madness
song was about s.e.x ,
and Benedict is rather
gorgeous (ahem, in
my humble opinion!) but no, my thoughts were not travelling
down THAT line. Instead, both images conjured up a sense of
a palace as a huge, rambling place, full of confusing corridors

and hidden corners, all with a slightly overwhelming tinge.

Think hall of mirrors, overdone gilt-edging, and a ghost or two
lurking in the shadows.
And you know, sometimes I think our approach to the idea
of fun can be as off kilter as those odd images. In these driven
times, letting our hair down can be a real source of guilt. Im
guilty of it too very rarely do I take a lunch-break, stuck
to the computer as I am, and all too often I can only see
the chores to be done when I get home. But if we do allow
ourselves some fun time, many of us feel cheated if it isnt a
four-star glittering occasion: think about all the pressure to
have a weekend long, Hollywood-standard hen or stag do, even
if we cant really afford it; or the minefield thats childrens
parties these days. And we all know that sinking Facebook
feeling when it looks like the whole worlds having a ball and
we dont have much to report. Even our younger generation is
picking up this habit if it doesnt have a screen, a celeb or a
photo opportunity its boring. Now thats madness!
But fun doesnt have to be a lions den or a bewildering tumble
into bankruptcy. This time of year can give us so many opportunities kick the leaves, make some jam, light a fire. We could all do
to just take some time, and instead of filling it with stuff, lets
enjoy the company of our friends and family, see what our great
town has to offer, and have a ball!
