THE CHARACTERISTICS OF READING

1) Reading is a process of using our one or more senses to know, learn, understand
and express the meaning and the emotion of a written content.
2) Reading involves either seeing and understanding or seeing, uttering, listening
and then understanding and expressing the meaning and the emotion of a
written content.
3) The more senses we involve in the process of reading the more we are able to
remember the subject matter.
4) Before reading a subject matter, we need to have the ability to recognize the
letters of the Alphabet used in the content and ability to understand not only the
meaning of each individual word but also the comprehensive meaning of the
whole sentence and the paragraph.
5) With correct tempo, pause, rhythm and intonation readers will able to
comprehend literal meaning as well as the inner significance of a subject matter
6) Reading provides the readers to perceive the aesthetic and the sense of humor
of a literary content. It enables the learners to know the past of their country and
evokes patriotism among them through historical articles. Reading also let
learners know the many scientific facts about our universe, all living beings, the
mechanism of all human created machines and many more through science
books. It familiarizes the readers with the creativity process through the Work
Education books.
7) Proper reading helps us to understand the Writers feelings. So, students need to
develop the skill of good reading from the very beginning.
8) Reading enhances our verbal communication skill.
THE CHARACTERISTICS OF VERBAL READING
Definition: The reading where a Reader produces intelligible sounds is called a Verbal
reading.
1) From the primary level, students need to develop the habit of verbal reading.
2) In verbal reading one needs to concentrate a lot on the tempo, pause, rhythm
and intonation to understand the writers feelings and emotions correctly.
3) In Poetry reading verbal reading is a must in order to comprehend the poems
inner meaning. In this way one will develop a good skill of recitation.
4) If, any student is found to be mistaking while reading loudly, that has to be
corrected on spot.
To perform a proper verbal reading one has to
1) Know the correct pronunciation of the Vowels and the Consonants of an
Alphabet.
2) Familiarize with pronunciation of Short and Long vowels and Voiced and
Unvoiced consonants.
3) Take note of the Tempo and the Pause in a sentence.
4) Master how to use Intonation and the Special pronunciation patterns of some
words.
5) Avoid unnecessary speed reading.
Merits:
a) Students learn the proper pronunciation of letters and words.
b) To a learner, verbal reading is always enjoyable.
c) It makes the children lively.
d) It helps to understand Phonology.
e) With proper articulation, any fault with the pronunciation will be rectified.

f) Proper diction helps to be an Elocutionist.


g) It helps to save a language from its degeneration.
Demerits:
a) It takes longer time to complete.
b) Exhaustion may occur to the readers due to extra effort.
c) It disturbs others in thinking and in concentrating their jobs.
d) Its hard to recognize any faults, an individual makes if all are verbal reading
at the same time.
e) It also hampers the readers own concentration.******
THE CHARACTERISTICS OF SILENT READING
Definition: The reading where a Reader does not produce any sound is called Silent
reading.
