Module

Human Security, Rights and Development

Preliminary Information and Preparation
guide

General Information
During this module you will follow lectures and workshops for a total of 32 hours. In these hours
there is a mandatory attendance. Next to this we expect you to do self-study and work on
assignments for 28 hours. We expect you to do much of this self-study before you come to the
summer school and you will have to hand-in some assignments before arriving at the summer
school. You can read more about the assignments and their deadlines here.
There are 3 ECTS (study credits) reserved for the module. This correspondents with 84 hours of work
for each student.

The assignments
Preliminary Assignment
You should put yourself into the shoes of an UN diplomat that wants to draw the attention
of your colleagues to a specific problem with international implications on peace and
security. This might be a conflict, a terrorist attack, an environmental issue or a
humanitarian crisis that occurs or might occur in a place in the world. To do so, the UN
diplomat has to explain how this problem is about to place international peace and
security at jeopardy. How will the UN diplomat convince his counterparts to take a specific
course of action?
To this end, you, playing the role of UN diplomat, have to perform a 10Power Point
presentation (that entails around 5 to 6 slides). Each slide should be assigned to addressing
the following questions (you decide upon how you order the questions):
-

What is the problem all about? Briefly narrate the historical and geographical nature
of the problem?
Why should we care? Why should the international community (UN or other any
other regional or global organization) be involved in tackling this problem? What are
the international implications of this problem?
What has the international community (UN or any other global or regional
organization) done so far to tackle this problem? What will happen if it does not do
anything?
What (else) should the international community (UN or any other global or regional
organization) do to tackle this problem?

The presentations should not include full texts or quotes. They should include bullets with
key words and/or images, shapes, charts that give us an idea on what you are about to say.
The presentations should be submitted to Vasileios P. Karakasis via
email: v.karakasis@gmail.com. The deadline is before the start of the program, meaning
5.7.2015 (23.59 CEST).
