ANNUAL
PROGRAMME

2015
Esterhzy Palace, Eisenstadt

NEW PATHS
AT AN HISTORIC LOCATION
The unheard and the unseen can emerge in places where opposites
collide. An historical, cultural site on the one hand, a five-year-old
concert series aspiring to be current and contemporary on the other.
The concert series classic.Esterhzy is embarking upon exciting paths
in partnership with other event organizers. They are paths with vision
and goals: quality and character every weekend between April and
November. World stars such as Isabelle Faust, Marlis Petersen, Franois
Leleux and the Cuarteto Casals will be making guest appearances.
Orchestras like Camerata Salzburg, Concerto Kln and the Munich
Chamber Orchestra promise marvellous musical experiences.
The programme focuses on the works of the former Hofkapellmeister
Joseph Haydn and Johann Nepomuk Hummel and will be performed
in part on historical instruments from that period. The string quartet,
so central to classic.Esterhzy, will be given even greater prominence.
Each season, excellent musicians are invited to form the quartet-inresidence at Esterhzy Palace. In 2015/16 this is the award-winning
Schumann Quartet, who in 2016 will be premiering a specially
commissioned piece. With its many rooms and corridors and its large
park, the palace is a magical setting for a strolling concert with a wine
tasting as well as the summer picnic concerts. New ventures, such as a
master class with acclaimed soprano Marlis Petersen, and a Pannonian
Youth Orchestra, supported by the Esterhzy Foundation, widen the
musical spectrum and highlight Esterhzy Palace as a centre of vibrant,
contemporary culture.

Ludwig v. Beethoven:
Sonata for Piano and Violin No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 12 No. 3
Her sound has passion, grit and electricity but also a disarming warmth
and sweetnessthat can unveil the musics hidden strains of lyricism,
raved the New York Times about the outstanding violinist Isabelle
Faust. For years now, Germanys smartest violinist (Der Tagesspiegel) and pianist Alexander Melnikov have formed a fabulous duo. The
Russian pianists subtlest touch, absolute technical command and
perfect intellectual permeation (kulturradio rbb) have also garnered
much praise. Together they are the perfect combination for music
that is simultaneously spontaneous and carefully thought-out. In this
programme the two musicians demonstrate their passion for intricate,
virtuoso dialogues, bold clashes as well as harmonious cantilenas that
Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven seem to have composed especially for
these performers.
Exceptional works will also be played on exceptional instruments:
Isabelle Faust will be playing the Sleeping Beauty Stradivari of
1704, Alexander Melnikov the Mller fortepiano from the Esterhzy
Foundation collection (1803/04).

Johann Nepomuk Hummel:
Theme and Variations for Oboe and Orchestra, Op. 102
Wolfgang A. Mozart:
Symphony in C major, K. 551 Jupiter
His playing was the prototype of the highest purity and clarity, the
most graceful elegance and delicacy, with all difficulties calculated to
arouse the greatest amazement... This was how Carl Czerny described
Johann Nepomuk Hummels pianist brilliance. And Mozart praised his
colleague Ignaz Pleyel, twenty-one years older than Hummel, with the
following words: It will be a lucky day for music if, when the time
comes, Pleyel should replace Haydn! Yet both Pleyel and Hummel are
rarely encountered in concert programmes today. Reason enough for
the Munich Chamber Orchestra and world-renowned oboist Franois
Leleux to combine outstanding works by these two composers with
Haydns dramatic symphony La Passione and Mozarts brilliant
Jupiter Symphony. A fest of virtuoso classical music with
Hungarian composer Sndor Veress adding a thrilling modern touch in
his Passacaglia Concertante.
The new CD by the Munich Chamber Orchestra and Franois Leleux
will be presented at this concert evening.

Picnic

t
concer

The awakening of cheerful feelings upon arrival in the country, as

conjured up in the Pastorals first movement, is a perfect sentiment
for the musical and culinary delights provided by the popular picnic
concerts. The idyll by the banks of a stream, rustic dancing, and
after a brief, dramatic storm the gratitude of refreshed nature are
wondrously rendered in Beethovens music. The programme also
includes Johann Strauss Jrs hymn to the landscape of home in his
Stories from the Vienna Woods, with their hint of melancholy and
noble sounds, as well as the threatening, mysterious murmurs and wild
storms in the Bohemian Forest in Carl Maria von Webers Freischtz
that still have a compelling immediacy. The French horn, that
quintessential Romantic instrument, is everywhere to be heard
on this evening, and is invited to take centre stage as the virtuoso
star in the second concerto by Richard Strauss.

PANNONIAN YOUTH
SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Jochem Hochstenbach, conductor

One of the Esterhzy Foundations initiatives has been to establish a

youth orchestra in Burgenland. The aim is to bring together young musicians from Austria and its neighbouring countries of Slovakia, Hungary and Germany. Music, a language that transcends borders, is an
ideal medium in which to explore cultural identity and tradition. The
first project week will culminate in a concert in the Haydnsaal in which
the orchestra will perform their repertoire from the week.

Picnic

t
concer

The endless fascination of water has always pervaded music. Robert

Schumanns Rhenish Symphony celebrates the sacred river and
the inhabitants living on the Rhines banks in festive, rustic and also
mysterious, solemn melodies. Felix Mendelssohn based his rendering
of an alarmingly calm sea, finally relieved when the wind blows into
the sails, on a poem by Goethe. By contrast, in Brittens Peter Grimes
the sea is a mirror of the human soul with moving, expressive sounds
that veer between lashing squalls and resigned calm. Max Bruch was
bowled over by the torrent of young violinists who played him his first
violin concerto time and again as if he had never composed anything
else! Yet these have been swept away by the current of music history.
The Concerto in G minor has withstood the passage of time: a beautiful
island in the midst of musical waves at this picnic concert.
In their performance of this
popular violin concerto, violinist Sara
Domjani and the Pressburg Symphony, conducted by Jochem Hochstenbach, are also sure to be on the same wavelength.

LIEDER AND ARIAS BY

HAYDN, MOZART AND
BEETHOVEN
Marlis Petersen, soprano
Camillo Radicke, piano
Florian Mayer, violin

Lieder and Arias by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven

Coloratura soprano Marlis Petersen not only bedazzles in styles ranging from Baroque to modernism, but is also exceptionally gifted at
portraying her characters. These have been as diverse as the furious
Electra in Mozarts Idomeneo, the fragile Violetta in Verdis La Traviata, who perishes for love, Alban Bergs seductress Lulu, and Aribert
Reimanns Medea, so deeply hurt that she is driven to murder.
Her passion for historical styles of performance not only helps infuse
her characters with enthralling credibility, down to the last detail, but
also to pour powerful emotions into a finely crafted form. This tremendously versatile German singer will perform powerful music on this
evening of arias, including works by Mozart and Haydn. In collaboration with the Joseph Haydn Conservatoire in Eisenstadt, she is also
holding a master class to give young talents the opportunity to benefit
from her expertise.

HAYDNS VIOLIN
CONCERTOS AND
ORCHESTRAL MUSIC
BY THE BACH SONS
Midori Seiler, violin
Concerto Kln

Johannes Matthias Sperger:

Symphony in C major, Meier A2
Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach:
Symphony No. 1 in D minor, Wf 1/3l
Joseph Haydn:
Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in G major, Hob. VIIa:4
Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in C major, Hob. VII1:1
Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach:
Symphony in E minor for Strings and Basso continuo
Wolfgang A. Mozart:
Divertimento in F major for Strings, No. 3, K. 138
Joseph Haydn once confessed to his biographer Griesinger: ... whoever
knows me thoroughly must realize that I owe a great deal to Emanuel
Bach, and that I understood him and studied him diligently. Mozart
was also convinced: He is the father, we are the boys. Those of us who
know anything at all learned it from him. This exciting evening traces
the importance Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and other composers held
for the Classical style. The performers are a further attraction the
brilliant Concerto Kln and virtuoso violinist Midori Seiler, who will be
interpreting two of Haydns (unjustly) rarely played violin concertos.
Symphonies by Johannes Matthias Sperger from Lower Austria, who
was also a travelling contrabassist, and the frequently overlooked
Bach son Johann Christoph Friedrich, who composed in the somewhat
provincial Bckeburg, cast new light on works by Mozart and Haydn.

STROLLING CONCERT
IN THE CHAPEL, EMPIRE
HALL AND HAYDNSAAL
Schumann Quartett

Wolfgang A. Mozart:
Duo for Violin and Viola in G major, K. 423
Gideon Klein:
Duo for Violin and Violoncello (unfinished)
Ludwig v. Beethoven:
String Trio in E-flat major, Op. 3
Joseph Haydn:
Quartet in D major, Op. 20, No. 4
Robert Schumann:
Quartet in A minor, Op. 41, No. 1
They are young, fresh and are creating a splash, the Sddeutsche
Zeitung recently wrote. The three brothers Erik, Ken and Mark Schumann have already been awarded prizes as soloists. Together with violist Lisa Randalu they form the Schumann Quartet. And far from
confining itself to the works of its Romantic namesake, this quartet
has a wide repertoire ranging from classical to contemporary music
and can already boast many successful performances at prestigious
festivals. At Esterhzy Palace the Schumann Quartet invites its audience on a small journey of discovery in two senses. In impressive
rooms, compelling works will be played by two duos, a trio, followed
by quartets to make up this strolling concert. Enjoy music by Haydn,
Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann, as well as by the talented Gideon
Klein, murdered by the Nazis at a subcamp of Auschwitz when he was
twenty-five.
The Schumann Quartet is the classic.Esterhzy 2015/16 quartet-in-residence. During this residency it will perform a number of concerts,
premieres, and special programmes.

QUARTET AND MORE

Cuarteto Casals
Luigi Attademo, guitar

Joseph Haydn:
String Quartet in F minor, Op. 20, No. 5, Hob. III:35
Wolfgang A. Mozart:
String Quartet in C major, No. 19, K. 465 Dissonance Quartet
Luigi Boccherini:
Quintet No. 4 in D major, G. 448 Fandango (for guitar and strings)
Ludwig van Beethoven:
String Quartet No. 12 in E-flat major, Op. 127, etc.
There is a tension in Beethovens evolution between adherence to
and a rebellious need to dissolve or at least to reshape the Classical
style. This was how his biographer Maynard Solomon described the
composer and this certainly applies to his late quartet, Op. 127, which
thrillingly strays from the key E-flat major. Haydn had already sought
out the most remote keys, as his capricious, bold String Quartet in F
minor, Op. 20/5, demonstrates. And in his notorious introduction to
his Dissonance Quartet, Mozart raised this disruption of harmony to
a principle, finding echoes in the entire work. In Boccherinis rousing
Fandango Quintet, the Cuarteto Casals remains true to its passion for
the unusual. The guitar introduces original Andalusian flair, enhanced
by adventurous cello soli, and resonates with the stirring Fandango
melody to be found in Mozarts Le nozze di Figaro.
