MULTIMEDIA

I, Robot?
Theyve been up here several times before, but we never tire of the wonderful automaton
creations that come from SHARMANKA [1] in Glasgow. Their name translates as barrelorgan in Russian and theres something of that mechanical skill from days gone by at
the heart of their astonishing contraptions, but its invested with something entirely fresh
and rarely less than captivating. The company was founded by sculptor-mechanic Eduard
Bersudsky and theatre director Tatyana Jakovskaya in St.Petersburg in 1989, but they moved
here in 1996 and theyre celebrating their 20th anniversary in Scotland with Merry-Go-World,
a new show at INVERNESS MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY from 17 OCT 02 JAN. It includes
ten new kinetic sculptures made of the remnants of domestic machinery and populated by
menagerie of hand-carved animal-like-humans and human-like-animals. It is reflecting on the
modern world where the different countries and cultures are involved in perpetual movement
- amusing, funny, scary and faster than ever.
Also at IMAG, from 17 OCT14 NOV is Re-adjuster by BEN SKEA [2]. The film installation Readjuster was triggered by Skeas memory of a chart, seen in childhood, of the geological ages
of the planet. Themes of mass extinction or biotic crisis and the crucial role it can play in the
evolution of life were reinforced by visits to the two locations that form the basis for the project
- Green Loch/Lochan Uaine, Cairngorms and the Volcanic Green Lake, El Golfo, Lanzarote.

WILL MACLEAN: VEERING

WEST, 03 Oct to 01 Nov,
A new exhibition containing
new and retrospective work
from Will Maclean, developed
in association with Art First,
London and An Lanntair,
Stornoway. This powerful and
lyrical exhibition of work from the
artist laureate of the Highlands
and Islands, comprises of
drawings, constructions,
assemblages, free standing
sculptures, as well as the poetic
collaboration with John Burnside,
The Catechism of the Laws of
Storms a publication of poems
written in response to Macleans
collaged images. Maclean is
internationally recognised as
a foremost exponent of box
construction art. Using found
objects which he deconstructs
and reconstructs in a display of
visual thinking that is compelling,
he has developed a unique
visual and poetic language.
Reductive and honed, his
metaphorical art is based on
the histories and mythologies
of those who live and work by
the sea. His deep interest in
Highland culture reaches out to
universal themes of navigation,
emigration, whaling and fishing,
and global exploration.

KILMORACK GALLERY

SARAH CARRINGTON,
COASTLINES, to 24 Oct,
including a range of works from
her large triptychs to her smaller
more intimate works.
PAUL BLOOMER, FLIGHT, to 24
Oct, The show includes some
of his monolithic Black Country
woodcuts and drawings. This is
figure painting, or to be more
precise drawing, at its best
and includes works like his
wonderfully powerful crucifixion.
It is hard to think of many other
paintings in the canon of British
art that are so moving and
humane. The exhibition also
includes the best of his new
Shetland woodcuts of birds, the
landscape and people. Here
we see Bloomer embracing a
natural more harmonious world.
We also see composition and
draftsmanship at their best.

The Long Run to the Oscars

begins in earnest this month. Whilst some of us may hope to see Mad Max: Fury
Road and Inside Out pick up some nominations (and we simply cant imagine Paul
Giamatti and Paul Dano not featuring for Love & Mercy) the real movers and shakers
start releasing this month: Top tips would include MACBETH [1] finally a good
screen adaptation, with Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard; SUFFRAGETTE [2],
with a heavy-hitter line up including Meryl Streep, Carey Mulligan and Helena Bonham
Carter; Stephen Frears Lance Armstrong scandal, THE PROGRAM (with Ben Foster
and Chris ODowd); Robert Zemeckis THE WALK about the high-wire artist (Joseph
Gordon Levitt) walking between the twin towers; and drugs war-cum-horror, SICARIO
[3], in which Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin star. Kerpow.
But bigger news than any of these will be the latest Daniel Craig Bond outing.
SPECTRE [4] is perhaps unlikely to bother the Academy but will bother the box-office.
Considerably so. Especially with the wonderful Christoph Waltz as the baddie
We live in a golden age of young-ish screen actors so much so that releases featuring
ace Brit-screen types Tom Hiddlestone (Guilermo Del Toros visually fantastical gothic horror
CRIMSON PEAK [5], with added attractions of Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain and
Charlie Hunnam) and Benedict Cumberbatch (NT Live: HAMLET [6]) will not catch as many
viewers as they might in times gone by, such is the competition from the above titles. Still
seems strange that out of all the top talents of Gyllenhaal, Hardy, Fassbender, Bale, Phoenix
plus Tom and Benny (and plenty more), none of them have an oscar but Eddie Redmayne
does
Elsewhere, there are myriad new interpretations of such classics as the boy who
refused to age in PAN [7] with Hugh Jackman, Rooney Mara, Garret Hedlund, Amanda
Seyfried and (best of all?) Kathy Burke; UNDER MILK WOOD with an all-Welsh cast
including Rhys Ifans and, erm, Charlotte Church; and David Suchet hamming as Lady
Bracknell in THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST live from the West End.
Robert De Niro long seems to have stopped attaching himself to anything oscar-likely and
the turn-the-idea-upside-down of THE INTERN, in which the old person is the intern to Anne
Hathaways boss, is distinctly unlikely to change that. Films for the masses action, comedy
and horror come in the form of SOLACE, MASTERMINDS, MISSISSIPPI GRIND, THE LAST
WITCH HUNTER, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 5 (Ghost Dimension) you decide whats for you.
And in case you hadnt noticed, its Halloween - and InFiFa have got together with Eden
Court to put on a HALLOWEEN SCREAMATHON with films and activities all day for
all ages. The films line-up includes: MONSTER HOUSE, BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN,
THE MUMMY, A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT and HXAN: WITCHCRAFT
THROUGH THE AGES and ROSEMARYS BABY. Brrrrr. More on P15 and online...

NB: In addition to Bennys Hamlet from NT Live, there is a rash of other stage on screen films - from the likes
of MET Opera, ROH Live, The Bolshoi Ballet, NT Live, ENO and RSC Live. Wow. See listings for details >>>

Judith Kerrs THE TIGER WHO CAME TO TEA is, along with The Gruffalo, one of the most-loved
of modern childrens stories. And its also proved to be just as successful when transferred
from page to stage. Of course you miss out on Kerrs lovely illustrations, but the sheer energy
of the tale about well, have a guess ensures a delightful experience. This production, at
EDEN COURT on 11 & 12 OCT was nominated for an Olivier award back in 2012 which is hardly
surprising since it was adapted by David Wood, widely acknowledged as the countrys leading
writer and director of plays and musicals for children.

Better Together?
The long awaited Smiths reunion might have to be put off for a while, but at least we
get to see JOHNNY MARR [1] on the same stage as Morrissey. Admittedly, the latters
appearance at IRONWORKS was over a year ago, whereas Marr is appearing on 13 OCT,
but thats as close as theyre going to get to bringing the gang back together. And there are
bound to be a few old Smiths classics as well as plenty of Johnnys well-received solo stuff,
the man further establishing himself as one of the great British guitarists of modern times.
Technical excellence on show as well at BLAZIN IN BEAULY [2] from 1116 OCT. Now in its
fourteenth year, this week-long immersion in Highland musical culture involves masterclasses,
workshops, celebratory sessions and much more with the added bonus this year of the launch
of the new Blazin Fiddles album, a fitting centrepiece for that bands Bruce McGregor whose
idea BIB was in the first place. More details of all events at blazininbeauly.com
Its a great month for fans of folk in all its incarnations and, indeed, collaborations. It
doesnt come much better than the trio [3] at UNIVERSAL HALL, FINDHORN on 23 OCT
when, sharing their Celtic, Nordic and Appalachian cultures are ALY BAIN, Scotlands
supreme traditional style fiddler, Swedish multi-instrumentalist ALE MLLER, and
American old time fiddler, singer, guitarist and banjo player BRUCE MOLSKY. If youve
seen them play together before, youll testify as to what a fine ensemble they are.
Another fine musical meeting comes in the form of KATHRYN ROBERTS & SEAN
LAKEMAN [4], who play GLEN URQUHART HALL on 09 OCT. The latter is Seths older
brother and just as talented, while Roberts is from Barnsley like fellow folk nightingale
Kate Rusby with whom she started out as a duo. The twosome constantly win folk awards
the world over and heres a chance to find out why theyre held in such high regard.
Another duo for your delectation in BILL WELLS & AIDAN MOFFAT [5], two of the most reliably
unpredictable musicians in Scotland and rarely less than captivating. Having met while working on
Arab Straps Monday at the Hug & Pint, AS founder Aidan Moffat and jazz virtuoso (who actually
doesnt really make jazz) Bill Wells vowed to make an album together. The result was Everythings
Getting Older, an album of rare beauty and intelligence that picked up the inaugural Scottish
Album of the Year. Their follow up, The Most Important Place in the World, sees Moffat speaking,
snarling and singing candid stories of domesticity and devilry to exquisite jazz inflected melodies.
Their show at EDEN COURT on 13 OCT promises to be extraordinary and Wells may even play
some stuff from his forthcoming album of interpretations of nursery rhymes.
Finally, also recommended are the increasingly assured RACHEL SERMANNI [6] at
EDEN COURT on 05 OCT, mesmerizing Southern songwriter (and ex hubby of the glorious
Nanci Griffith), ERIC TAYLOR [7] at EDEN COURT on 11 OCT and the welcome return of
Scouse britpoppers CAST [8] at IRONWORKS on 17 OCT.

AUDIO DESCRIBED & SUBTITLED FILMS We endeavour to offer as wide a range of accessible film screenings

screenings (please ask box office for your headset). When a film is marked S this means there will be a
selected Subtitled screening/screenings. Subtitled Screenings will be highlighted on the timetable and
below the film entry.
AUTISM FRIENDLY SCREENINGS When a film is marked AF this means that there will be an Autism Friendly
Screening of this film. These screenings are especially for people on the autistic spectrum and their families,
friends and carers. During these shows low lights are left on in the auditorium and the volume of the
soundtrack is reduced. It is fine for customers to move around, make noise or take a break during the film.

Rivalries Renewed
Last month when we previewed the HIGHLAND DERBY on 03 OCT between ROSS
COUNTY and ICT, we suggested that the former looked to be trying to emulate that
latters success last season and in the intervening weeks thats looked even more
evident. The Dingwall team are on a roll, with lots of good things being said about gaffer
Jim McIntyre [1], whos proving to be one of the best coaches in the land. The recent
launch of Countys own online TV station (rosscounty.tv) gives you an opportunity to
find out more about how he thinks, along with loads of features and interviews with the
team. Caley Thistle meanwhile are going into this game on a dreadful run, the team
beset by injuries and a sense from many fans that the board have failed to capitalise on
the glorious opportunities presented by last seasons success. Inevitable though it may
have been, the sale of Ryan Christie to Celtic is a further blow, though at least hes back
on loan until Christmas, so get along and see his extended farewell.
More rivalry on show at the annual SCOTLAND V IRELAND SHINTY/HURLING [2] match
at BUGHT PARK on 24 OCT. This curious bringing together of the two sports does work
surprisingly well, even if the scoring system remains a bit of a mystery. The Scotland
Senior and U21 Men Squads will compete against their Irish counterparts in an attempt
to prove that theyre just as good at their opponents sport. And itll get physical.
It seems that every month theres a run worth watching/participating in and October is
no exception, the CULLODEN RUN [3] taking place on 25 OCT. And theres a clever link
with the place where its held as the 17.46k run pays homage to the Battle of Culloden in
1746, providing a scenic but testing route for runners as it passes the prehistoric Clava
Cairns and under the imposing railway viaduct over the River Nairn. The Culloden 10K will
provide a flatter and faster course for runners and joggers of all standards looking to run
in an historic landscape. Recognising the sanctity and historic status of the battlefield
the running routes will have no impact or presence on or near the actual battlefield
site or associated monuments. Its organised by Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland in
partnership with the National Trust for Scotland. More: tinyurl.com/ngkmpbs

A Great Month for Theatre

While its always good to see other companies bringing their shows to Eden Court,
some of the venues most laudable moments have come from their own productions.
Following success in recent years with Para Handy and Never Land, Eden Court is hoping
to impress once again with their latest in house production, NOT ABOUT HEROES [5].
Written by Stephen MacDonald and based on true events, the story centres around the
relationship between wartime poets, Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, who met in an
Edinburgh Hospital in 1917. It opens at EDEN COURT itself from 0103 OCT, then after a
brief sojourn to Glasgow, Edinburgh and St Andrews, it tours much of the Highlands from
1424 OCT. See listings for where and when to catch this compelling show
One company that can always be relied on to deliver excellent productions is SCOTTISH
BALLET [1] and theyre at EDEN COURT with a couple of interesting shows. First off, on 02
& 03 OCT is a double bill of Motion of Displacement and Elsa Canasta. The former is a
world premiere of a piece by rising star of choreography, the American Bryan Arias, inspired by
childhood memories of his mothers journey from her native land in pursuit of love with music
by Bach and John Adams, performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. The latter is a
Scottish Ballet premiere of a creation by Javier de Frutos, who has not only made a full length
ballet with the Pet Shop Boys and choreographed many music videos, but also been nominated
for a Turner Prize. Elsa Canasta is a dark, funny and sexy evocation of the music of Cole Porter,
including music hall magic, a live singer and some wonderful dance. Miss at your peril.
Scottish Ballet are touring Scotland in partnership with Dance Base to introduce the world to
PRIME [2], Scotlands first semi-professional dance company for the over 60s. This radical
new company enjoys performing progressive and creative choreography and empowering
other seniors to explore new possibilities in life and dance, challenging assumptions about
who can be a dancer. A tremendous initiative which you can catch at EDEN COURT on 04 OCT
with a bill that includes a piece inspired by Adeles irresistible Rolling In The Deep.
Finally on the ballet front, THE TROCKS [3], aka Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo
come to EDEN COURT on 23 OCT for a dragged-up mix of comedy and genuine balletic
skills. Should be fun.
It really is a great month for theatre, and theres barely enough space to sing the praises of
the highlights - two Scottish Opera productions, CARMEN [6] (EC, 27-31 OCT) and COSI FAN
TUTTE (EC, 17 OCT); Solar Bear Theatres play about a deaf young man adapting to a hearing
world, TRIBES (EC, 22 OCT); the high-octane cabaret of comedy, dark puppetry and more
that is BORIS & SERGEYS VAUDEVILLIAN ADVENTURE [6] (EC, 08 OCT), and MICHELLE
MCMANUS REALITY - THE MUSICAL [4] (EC, 21 OCT) in which the Pop Idol winner belts out
plenty of show tunes as well as recounting what Cowell and the rest are really like.

sacrifice, loneliness and how
reaching out to strangers can
completely change your life.

include tooth whitening, tooth coloured fillings, antiwrinkle treatments.

Before >

Six month smiles provides a simple and very effective
solution to improve your smile without having to
remove healthy teeth or wear braces for several years.

Some Advantages include:

Average treatment time is 6 months
Clear brackets and wires are barely visible
The specialist Six Month Smile patient tray kits mean
your appointment times are short and comfortable.
Low forces are involved meaning treatment is more
comfortable and your teeth are kept healthy.
Short overall treatment time means hygiene can be
maintained more easily.
Less expensive than conventional orthodontic
treatment.

We are trained to use botox and filler products to reduce

the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, gently plump
areas you have lost volume or give you that fuller lip if
that is what you feel you have always missed.

These treatments are very quick and easy and since we

can easily give you a little local anaesthetic you can get
the results you want without having to feel a thing.

are interested please do not hesitate to come in for a free

EATING
OUT

Fig & Thistle Bistro

4A6 Stephens Brae, Inverness
If Trip Advisor is good for anything
(other than chuckling at the
idiosyncrasies of professional
moaners), its a quick guide to the
make-up of people visiting and
eating in the worlds cities. In our
case it appears that the majority are
Americans from exotically obscure
parts of the mid-West, all united
by a single thing; the insistence on
calling a main course an entre. And
quite possibly demanding arugala,
mispronouncing aluminium and
asking for directions to the rest
room where they have absolutely no
intention of actually having a lie down.
The rest rooms at Fig & Thistle,
though immaculately clean, would
certainly not accommodate an
impromptu nap, being as tiny as
any weve seen in the land, but that
turns out to be one of the few minor
criticisms of a place thats also
united visiting American Trip Advisor
contributors, this time in unstinting
praise. So much so that within a
few months of opening, its already
ranked in the Top Ten of places to
eat in Inverness.

01463 712 422

The places location, up at the top

of the High Street opposite M&S
isnt the most obvious spot to find
an enclave of eateries, but over
the years thats what its become.
Girvans has been there for yonks
and while the disturbingly named
Chickgoo (chicken from round the
world) seems to have moved on,
the excellent family run Little Italy
seems to be thriving. Or at least
concentrating on what it does best
since the space where Fig & Thistle
is now and which used to be a
French restaurant/creperie was,
most recently Little Italys short-lived
Tapas and Prosecco Bar. It was a
joint we rather liked, but obviously
the punters didnt agree enough to
make it worthwhile, so while Little
Italy has gone back to being amongst
the best trattoria in town, maintaining
the family vibe Fig & Thistle has been
opened by Karen Smith and her
partner, chef Steven Dewart.
Having run a restaurant in Portugal
for a dozen years they obviously
know their way around the business
and have given the place a smart

new interior makeover, modern

without being gimmicky and able to
transform from daytime brightness
to something more intimate in the
evening. Its actually spread over
two floors, something thats not
immediately apparent should you
glance in the window and with only
half a dozen tables on the ground
floor you could easily make the
mistake of thinking theres no room.
Always worth popping your head in
to ask.
Especially since, if our visit is
anything to go by, youre bound to
get a warm welcome. Those years
in Portugal have ensured that Karen
has her hosting skills down to a fine
art, maintaining the perfect balance
throughout between attending to
our needs and leaving us in peace,
all delivered with a cheeriness that
suggests shes happy were there.
Might seem obvious, but youd
be surprised by how many places
are helmed by folk who treat your
presence as some sort of
unhinged intrusion.

My pal has an equally impressive
Butternut Squash Risotto, again
just right for this time of the year. A
simple dish, its all too easy to get
it wrong, but this had the perfect
slightly sloppy consistency and
impressive flavours. Definitely worth
coming back for.
An array of deserts is displayed on
a blackboard and I go for Chocolate
Profiteroles expecting something
unctuous and creamy in choux
pastry. Somewhat surprisingly said
pastry merely tops and tails three
balls of ice cream. Nice ice cream
mind, a wonderful chocolate sauce
and (despite the unnecessary
embellishment of a cape gooseberry
which is SO last decade) nifty
presentation. But cream versions
would have been better.
A twist too for my companions
Chocolate & Hazelnut Cheesecake,
with the chocolate in the
cheesecake mix itself. Unlike with
my profiteroles, you wonder why
more people dont do it this way as
it proves to be a triumph, particularly
served as it is with a scoop of caf
latte ice cream.
By the time we finish, the hustle and
bustle of lunchtime service is almost
over and the fact that all the tables
have been full is a sign of just how
successfully the owners have hit the
ground running. And you can see
why it deserves its place among the
best in town. Those Americans were
right after all.
