Session Inputs
Database System and its Applications
An introduction about the Database Management System
is given to the learners during the presentation.
o The details regarding the data, database,
management of database, system, and the need
for the database are explained in the session.

Suggested Activity: Brain Storming

The learners are asked to watch a scene in the boys movie in which
actor Senthil tells a boy that he has the database of all the temples
where the prasad is distributed on a particular day. After watching the
scene the learners are asked to find out the relevance of the scene to
the subject title. Further, students are asked to answer the following
questions:
1. What are the possible details stored in the senthils database?
2. Why does he maintain the database?
3. What will happen if he does not maintain the database?
4. What will happen if the database size is too large to store in his
brain?
5. What he needs to do in the said situation?

Database Management System (DBMS) is a set of computer

programs that controls the creation, maintenance, and the use of a
database.
DBMS allows organizations to place control of database development in
the hands of database administrators (DBAs) and other specialists.
DBMS is a system software package that helps the use of integrated
collection of data records and files known as databases.
DBMS allows user application programs to easily access the same

Database System vs File Systems

The difference between database system version file system is
explained with an analogy.

Suggested Activity: Analogy and Brain

Storming
In India in 1980s, to reserve a berth in a train one had to go to the
railway station, fill a form and hand it over to the reservation clerk. Fixed
number of berths had been allotted to each station and clerk used to
allot the seats from this local quota by entering it in the manual register.
Now the learners are asked to tell the merits and demerits of this
system.
The answers will fetch the following details:
Once the local quota is filled, clerk cannot allot the berths from
any other stations quota. Further, there were limited manual counters
and the concurrent reservations were not possible.
As a result the process was slow. Therefore people were yearning
for a new system that remedies the existing problem.
Now the learners are asked to tell the merits and demerits of the
new sytem. The answers will lead to the following summary.
In recent days, the scenerio is different. One can avail the
unallotted quota of other stations and concurrent reservations are also
possible. The reservation process speed is much faster than the previous
system. The old system can be called as file system and the new one
can be said as DBMS.

In file system the following demerits are observed:

Data are isolated.

Concurrent actions cannot be carried out.

Maintaining the files is difficult.
There is a possibility of inconsistency.
In DBMS the above problems are rectified.

Views of Data
Different views of a data stored in a DBMS is explained with
analogy.

Suggested Activity: Analogy

When we see an object, first we see it with coarse details. For example,
when we talk about a bus a normal person visualize its cubic shape with
breadth less than its length. It has 2 Glass panels, a driver seat and
many passengers seats. But a mechanic visualizes it as a cubic shape
made of metals and glasses, fitted with rivet or welding. The designer of
a bus visualizes in different way. Therefore views varies person to person
based on the approach.

There are three views of data viz. user view, logical view and
physical view.

Summary
In this session, we learnt to:
o Give examples of various applications of Database systems.
o Write the different views of the data.
o Distinguish the features of database systems and file systems.
