0.1 Course Description

ECE440 (EET 416) Microwave Engineering
Introduction to microwave engineering which include: frequency allocations,
typical MW system, microwave applications advantages and disadvantages
of using high frequency. Derivation and solution the plane wave equations to
determine the wave characteristics and parameters (phase velocity,
wavelength and wave or intrinsic impedance) in different media: Free space,
lossless, lossy dielectrics and good conductors. Investigate the power
carried by a wave. Understand the reflection and transmission of plane wave
between two different Media. Study theories and applications of the
transmission line. Elaborate the Smith chart to determine the input
impedance, Impedance matching, reflection and transmission coefficients.
Impedance measurement. Derivation and solution the wave equations in
waveguides to determine the wave characteristics. Analyze various MW
Passive Components such as: power dividers/combiners, couplers,
resonators and cavities. Lab measurement of different MW parameters .

Course goals: Ability to understand the principles of microwave engineering

and technology. Perform the basic microwave measurements.

Course prerequisites: GEEG332 Electromagnetic Fields

Derive and solve the plane wave equations to determine the wave
characteristics and parameters in different media.
Derive and solve the wave equations in many microwave structures such as
transmission lines and waveguides to analyze the wave propagation along
them.
Use of Smith chart for determining the wave characteristics on a
transmission line and determine the input impedance and calculate perform
the impedance matching.
Investigate different passive microwave components such as: power
dividers/combiners, couplers, resonators and cavities.
