january 1948. He was the prominent leader of the India independence movement in british
ruled nation. Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and
freedom across the world. The honourable and high souled Mahatma Gandhi is well known
as the Father of the Nation or Bapu because of his greatest contributions towards the
independence of our country. He was the one who believed in the non-violence and unity of
the people and brought spirituality in the Indian politics. He worked hard for the removal of
the untouchability in the Indian society, upliftment of the backward classes in India, raised
voice to develop villages for social development, inspired Indian people to use swadeshi
goods and other social issues. He brought common people in front to participate in the
national movement and inspired them to fight for their true freedom.
He was one of the persons who converted peoples dream of independence into truth a day
through his noble ideals and supreme sacrifices. He is still remembered between us for his
great works and major virtues such as non-violence, truth, love and fraternity. He was not
born as great but he made himself great through his hard struggles and works. He was
highly influenced by the life of the King Harischandra from the play titled as Raja
Harischandra. After his schooling, he completed his law degree from England and began his
career as a lawyer. He faced many difficulties in his life but continued walking as a great
leader.
He started many mass movements like Non-cooperation movement in 1920, civil
disobedience movement in 1930 and finally the Quit India Movement in 1942 all through the
way of independence of India. After lots of struggles and works, independence of India was
granted finally by the British Government. He was a very simple person who worked to
remove the colour barrier and caste barrier. He also worked hard for removing the
untouchability in the Indian society and named untouchables as Harijan means the people
of God.
He was a great social reformer and Indian freedom fighter who died a day after completing
his aim of life. He inspired Indian people for the manual labour and said that arrange all the
resource ownself for living a simple life and becoming self-dependent. He started weaving
cotton clothes through the use of Charakha in order to avoid the use of videshi goods and
promote the use of Swadeshi goods among Indians. He was a strong supporter of the
agriculture and motivated people to do agriculture works. He was a spiritual man who
brought spirituality to the Indian politics. He died in 1948 on 30 th of January and his body was

cremated at Raj Ghat, New Delhi. 30 th of January is celebrated every year as the Martyr Day
in India in order to pay homage to him.Inspite of his death this hero , legend will live forever
in our hearts for what all he has done for the sake of our nation and humanity.
He was the man to be followed for his great and ideal principles.
He fought bravely till his last breath . He was killed at last by NATHURAM GODSE and the
last word that he uttered at his death was nothing but an extended ... RAM............
He was a very religious person too. He believed in non voilence rather than violence and he
fought throughout his life by the means of non-violence only. He never carried weapons. his
rule was that if someone slaps you on the one side of your face then you should be calm
instead of being aggressive and ask him to slap on the other side too and so in this way he
will learn a lesson.
He himself always wore khadi clothes. He had a simple living. He also gave many slogans
during the time of freedom struggle,,,, out of which one is "quit India". He always followed
the path of "satya" and "ahimsa". This two words were only his's base of living and thus
made him a great personality to be idolised in everyone's life. During freedom struggle he
launched severel campaigns like the famous "salt march' from his "Sabarmati ashram' to
"Dandi". He also launched non violence civil disobedience movement in order to boycott the
foreign goods. Htried to unite all muslims and hindu in order to drive away the british. For this
he merged op with Shaukat Ali the "brothers". He always said that "if you want to change the
world the first change yourself". Whenever anyone came to him with his/her problems he
said the same. One such incident is that once a women came to him telling that her son
always keeps on eating jaggery please tell something to help him avoid that. Mahatma
Gandhi asked her to come the pther day. On next day the lady came but Gandhiji again told
her to come next and he kept on doing like this for about 2 weeks. One day on getting
impatient the lady couraged to ask him that why is he doing so. Mahatma Gandhi on
listening this told her that I myself am in a habit of eating jaggery the how come i tell your
son to get rid of it . I was trying to cope myself out of this habit first . How can one change the
other person's habit if he can't changge his too. So from all this we conclude that mahatma
gandhi was really a great personality who will never be driven out of Indian's mind.
