MEE40004- Assignment 2015

Teach_21_org.xls is elementary CFD software for two dimensional flows. Download this from BB.
You can run this by pressing CTL and A key together in Excel. The following menu will pop up

1. Domain is the physical dimension. Change length to 10.

2. In Flow section, you need to change, use both Couette and Normal flow separately.
3. Relaxation parameters are used for converging the solution and you do not need to change
any parameters.
4. Equations: You will check u, v, p as well as temperature equation
5. Display: You will select u, v, p and T (dont consider residual parameters)
6. Graphics: both select x-y and vector plot for u, p, T and dissipation (dissipation- is the loss of
kinetic energy during flow)
7. Obstacle: Use 2 obstacles, put obstacle in symmetric fashion (dimension: 2 x 1) and consider
temperature (600+last two digit of your student id)0C.
Note: if last digits end with alphabet, then take previous two digits.
Note: you may not put two obstacles at a time. You need to do separately
8. Model: Select k epsilon model. There are different models available based on different
hypothesis. K epsilon models state that the turbulence is calculated with respect to
turbulent kinetic energy and the dissipation rate.
9. Press Solve button and the information will be compiled and the results will displayed in
data as well as graphical form.

Running Activities:
1. Take velocity value as last two digit of your ID divide by 10 (if last two digits is less than 10,
then add 10 with it, if ID contains character at the end, consider the 2 digits before the
character as example, for ID, 324068X, velocity will be 68/10=6.8 m/s).
2. Use same velocity for both Normal and Couette flow
3. Run the software for Normal flow with and without Obstacle
4. With Obstacle, run the software with and without temperature. Put the temperature
(600+last two digit of student id)0C
Note: You need to write some comments on the observation during running the software.
Report Activities:
Velocity data in y direction (V), temperature data at room temperature (250C), kinetic energy data,
dissipation data are all for information purposes. You can play with this and get some understanding
of their variation/interaction in the flow. At the end of run, the velocity profiles at different points
are also being displayed. You need to show the velocity (U) and temperature profile at points, x=1.5,
x=5.5 and x=8.5
1. Compare the velocity profile from package with analytical method (hand calculation, using
equation from chapter 9) for Couette flow
2. Compare the velocity profile of Couette flow with Normal Flow
3. Compare the velocity profile with and without Obstacle (without heated Obstacle)
4. Compare velocity profile with obstacle considering heated and normal obstacle
5. Compare also the effect of obstacle by different positioning.
6. Draw the temperature profile with heated obstacle
7. Check where the velocity has no effect of obstacle for the case where you put obstacle in the
domain.
8. Write your comment on the variation of velocity and temperature and put some reference if
you can to support your logic
9. Submit all information in report form

Note:
Submission: individual submission,
Submit on or before 30st October (Friday), 2015 in Pigeon Box (54) of Durul Huda (8th Floor
of ATC).
No submission will be accepted after 5 PM, 30st October (Last day of week 12), 2015.
