A Word from Servant of God Isaac

Hecker, Founder of the Paulist Fathers

Gods Immanence: [The members of new Religious Institutions] will

study especially gods relations with the Creation: God as the Primary
Mover, Sustainer, and Upholder of all created things. They will be
penetrated with the truth expressed by the great Apostle of the
Gentiles: For of Him, and by Him, and in Him, are all things (Romans
11:36). The appreciation of this primary truth will lead them to take a
lively interest in all investigations and discoveries of the natural
sciences. On the Mission of New Religious Communities, 1876]
If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another person who
is ill, and you believe something miraculous has happened, please phone

Pastoral Corner
Unless you become like little children. . .
When Jesus says to us, 'Unless you become like little children you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.', what do you
think he is talking about?
Most of us have grown up with the view of childhood as being something we could not get out of fast enough. Most of
us couldn't grow up fast enough. Childhood was something we wanted to leave behind as fast as we could. How often
did we bristle with impatience and even anger when told, "No, you're too young for that." "No. Wait until you're older."
Here it is important to distinguish between being childlike and being childish. Being childish implies immaturity, throwing
tantrums, being silly, being irresponsible ... children are not angels. These are things we should grow out of.
But there are also qualities which children have that we should try to hold onto, or re-discover and re-introduce into our
life, and it is this childlikeness that Jesus is commending to the apostles, disciples and to us in this week's Gospel
passage: - openness, receptivity sense of wonder, ability to live in the present ...
Unfortunately, many of us, as we grow up, tend to lose the good while holding on to the worst. We cease to be childlike
but continue to be childish.
Imagination is infinitely stronger in childhood. And the sheer joy of just being alive. A child greets every new day with a
smile and a sense of wonder.
Children can teach us how to live. They have not yet got into the ruts of living daily routine. Nor are they yet prisoners
of habit, and prejudice, or concerned about "looking good". They are always themselves. This is what makes them so
charming and unique. And they are often happiest with the simplest of things or toys.
We adults seem to want or think we need so much more. We need to rediscover the simplicity of living like children.
We need to rediscover our souls.
When Jesus says to us, 'Unless you become like little children you will not enter the kingdom of heaven,' he is recalling
us to our lost childhood, so that even if old and frail in body, we might be reborn in innocence of character.
Jesus says we can't enter the Kingdom unless we receive it like a child. The kingdom is a gift. Children are more suited
for the kingdom because they know how to receive a gift. No one can enter the kingdom who is not open to receive it
as a gift.
Fr. Charlie

PRAYER TREE
If you or someone you know would like to make a prayer request
contact BarbaraH@stphilipneripdx.org or call the parish office.
Our email PrayerTree (28 parishioners) accept all prayer requests
and continues to pray for your request for one month. If you are
interested in joining this spiritual work of mercy to be contacted
for prayer please contact us.

ANNULMENTS
Divorce and annulment: Marriage is a civil and religious
commitment. Once the State dissolves a marriage through
divorce, the ex-spouses are free to marry again according to civil
law. On the other hand, the Church examines the 'religious
covenant' of the two individuals to determine if there is 'cause'
for a declaration of nullity. An annulment does not affect the
legitimacy of children in any way. A declaration of nullity does
not dissolve or erase a marriage---but rather declares that a true
sacramental marriage did not occur. You are not required to
contact a former spouse. If you are interested in finding out more
about annulments or marriage validations, please call the parish
office at 503-231-4955. All information is confidential. This is a
healing opportunity!
