Survivor calls brain surgery a bump in the road

By Mardi Suhs
Cadillac News

CADILLAC At the
Stehouwer Free Clinic,
Director Cheryl Baders
mission is to help clients
receive free medical
treatment. Her resume
is a treatise on helping
others, something she
learned at the dinner
table, where everyone
discussed social causes.
Both of Baders grandfathers helped organize the
labor movement in 1930s
Detroit.
In Cadillac, Baders leg-

acy of giving back speaks

for itself. Shes the founding director of OASIS and
the Second Chance Resale
Store; a founding member of Project Christmas
and helped develop the
Wexford-Missaukee Family Violence Task Force.
In 2014, she became the
director of the medical
clinic, a job that fulfilled
her passions.
I like working for a
small, nonprofit, where
you feel the benefit of
what you are doing ...
where I can put my hand
on a project, help some-

one, and really feel the

difference it makes,
Bader stated. My whole
career has been a series
of jobs that combine
social work, community
organizing and helping
people get the medical
care they need.
Two months after starting the job, she was diagnosed with several brain
tumors, complications of
a 2012 breast cancer diagnosis. In 2013, she was
told she didnt have long
to live.

The Miracle Queen of the Stehouwer Free Clinic battling breast cancer
Continued from E1
Throughout surgeries
and treatment, Bader has
guided the clinic with a
calm, steady hand, with coworkers celebrating every
victory along the way.
Shes our miracle
queen for what shes been
through, said co-worker
Karen Zenner, administrator of the Stehouwer Medication Access Program.
She has created a happy,
uplifting atmosphere here.
Shes a strong, loving person. Shes our rock.
She keeps the clinic
going, stated Becky Cotter, clinic nurse. Shes an
angel, and a ball of fire.
She follows a person, making sure the cracks dont
widen beneath them.
The clients are devoted
to her, added Zenner. But
for the days Cheryl has to
go away for appointments,
we pray she has good news
and comes back ... and
things feel on an even keel
again.
At work, Bader doesnt
discuss her illness. But
with her office doors
closed, she opened up
about the life-threatening
battle that changed everything.

train that started when the

Bader spent her last two

Treatment Timeline
In January 2012, Bader
scheduled a mammogram
after finding a lump on her
breast. She was diagnosed
with triple negative, stage
two cancer with a 14 percent chance of survival.
She had a lumpectomy and
began chemotherapy. In

October, she began radiation.

In January 2013, cancer
progressed to stage four.
Although she had health
insurance, friends organized a crowd funding site
for financial support to
help defray costs not covered.
Cheryl Bader has given
so much to our community, the post said. Now its

Choosing to stay positive

August 2015 Bader
again celebrated an anniversary at U of M for her
third brain surgery after
an MRI revealed spots
deep over the occipital
nerve. She underwent
an MRI guided laser procedure done for the first
time at U of M by Dr. Jason
Heth, neurosurgeon.
Formerly an inoperable
surgery, the new technique
was successful and she
went home the next day.
The tumor is gone, she
said. It shrunk but hes
watching.
The timeline doesnt
include deathly illnesses
from chemo, pic lines, hospitalizations, hair loss, the
scars on her head and
the debt that follows them,
even with health insurance. Or that her husband
is ill and that she has been
living under a death sentence for two years. Bader
chooses to stay positive,
searching for silver linings.

Silver Linings
Bader has learned the
gift of letting friends
know what she needs.
Its tough for people to
know what to do, she said.
I had friends pull back,
they didnt know how to
approach me and others
plowed through my barriers. But it was my fault
I held people at arms
length. I didnt want to be
the woman with cancer. I
wanted to be strong.
Early after her diagnosis, she withdrew from people, stated friend Pegeen
Smith. It was really hard
as a friend . . . no phone
calls, no lunches and
although you understand
,you feel like youre not in
a position to help if you
are not let in.
I think during the fundraising, we helped her
understand how important
she is to everybody, Smith
added. If you love her,

Mammography is
still the best way to
detect early stages
of breast cancer.
Yearly testing is
recommended.

We can think of several

reasons you should
stop procrastinating:

Help lower your risk.

Consult with your
doctor and make an
appointment today.

(1) Mammograms can detect lumps

in the breast long before they are
discernible any other way. (2) Properly
performed by trained technicians, it
takes only minutes from your day. (3)
Its covered by most insurance plans,
but if yours doesnt, special financial
arrangements can usually be made.
(4) It can save your life.

Something so simple
can give you peace of

your life.

We can think of several more reasons

why women 35 and older should
have regular mammograms. But we
cant think of a single reason not to.
Can you?

Do it for your loved ones and yourself.

onions and celery until tender. And the
ginger, thyme, butternut squash, broth,

Wholesome Dinner
Chicken teriyaki stir fry

Ingredients:
1/2 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast,
sliced
1 1/2 teaspoons teriyaki sauce
1/8 cup chicken broth

1/8 cup soy sauce

1 teaspoon rice wine vinegar
1 teaspoon sesame oil
2 tablespoons canola oil
1/2 medium onion, peeled and chopped
Two cloves garlic, peeled and chopped
1/2 teaspoon peeled and minced fresh ginger
1 to 2 carrots, peeled and sliced fine
1 to 2 cups broccoli florets
1/2 to one cup mushrooms, sliced
1 small can water chestnuts, drained
1/2 teaspoon cornstarch
2 cups cooked brown rice
Directions:
Add the teriyaki to the chicken and
let it sit in the refrigerator for 15 to 30
minutes. In a small bowl, combine the
chicken broth, soy sauce, rice wine
vinegar and sesame oil, set aside. Heat a
skillet or wok and add one tablespoon of
the canola oil. Then stir-fry the chicken
until cooked through, remove from heat
and set aside. Add the remaining tablespoon of canola oil to the pan and stir
fry the onion for one to two minutes, followed by the garlic and ginger. Then add
the carrots, broccoli, mushrooms and
water chestnuts, one type of vegetable
at a time. Continue stir-frying for four to
five minutes. Return the cooked chicken
to the pan and add the reserved sauce.
In a small cup, mix the cornstarch with
a tablespoon of water and then add this
mixture to the pan to thicken the sauce.
Serve over the cooked brown rice.
