1.1 Who is Gayatri?

Gayatri, the five-faced Goddess, is said to have domain over the five senses or pranas,
and protects these five life-forces of those who chant the Gayatri Mantra. In her role as
the protector, Gayatri is referred to as Savitri.

1.2 What the Gayatri Mantra is and does? Origin, benefits and Chanting
The Vedas are widely considered to be the source of all true knowledge, the word
"Veda" itself meaning "Knowledge". Gayatri Devi also gave to mankind the "Gayatri
Mantra", also known as the "Guru Mantra" or the "Savitri Mantra".
It is one of the oldest mantras, and generally thought of as being amongst the highest
and most powerful of all (ancient Sanskrit) mantras in Hinduism, inspiring wisdom.
This mantra is considered as Vedasara "the essence of the Vedas, and is therefore
often referred to as "the Mother of the Vedas". In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna had
proclaimed to Arjuna - "Among all the mantras, I am the Gayatri".
Its meaning is that "May the Almighty God illuminate our intellect to lead us along the
righteous path". The mantra is also a prayer to the "giver of light and life" - the sun
(savitur).
This prayer fosters and sharpens the knowledge-yielding faculty. As a matter of fact,
the four mahavakyas or core-declarations enshrined in the four Vedas are implied in
this Gayathri mantra. So the Gayatri mantra has been given to you as a third eye to
reveal to you that inner vision by which you may realise Brahman (spiritual
awakening). Chanting it helps sanctify our lives, and give meaning to it.
The words of the Gayatri Mantra are arranged so that they not only convey meaning
but also create specific power of righteous wisdom through their utterance. The
syllables of the mantra are said to positively affect all the chakras or energy centres in
the human body - hence, proper pronunciation and enunciation are very important.
It has been found that the vibrations produced by this mantra when recited with the
correct accent as contained in the Vedas, illuminates the atmosphere around.
So Brahmaprakasha, the effulgence of the Divine, will descend on you and light up
your intellect and your path when this mantra is chanted. The Gayatri promotes the
acquisition of Daivasakthi (God-power). The attitude of surrender will grow in us as we
recite regularly the Gayatri mantra.

Gayatri is a mantra of physical, emotional, and mental healing. Chanting of Gayatri

Mantra removes all obstacles in our path to increased wisdom, spiritual growth and
development. Gayatri will protect your body, grow your intellect and power of speech,
and like sunrise after the night, it will dispel the darkness of ignorance (Dhiyoyonah
prachodayaath)". For this it is considered to be very important. It will protect you from
harm wherever you are traveling, working, or at home. This Gayatri has the subtle
power of removing evil tendencies and implanting virtuous habits. In the practice of
the Gayatri mantra, one should realise that everything is within one and thereby
develop confidence in the Self.
It is considered that the:

Gayatri is the reliever of all diseases (Sarvaroga nivaarini Gayatri).

Gayatri wards off all misery (Sarva dhukha parivarini Gayatri).

Gayatri is the fulfiller of all desires (Sarva vancha phalashri Gayatri).

Gayatri bestows all that is beneficial.

Chanting serves to reduce the effects of the wrong acts one does every day. It is like
buying goods for cash, instead of getting them on credit. There is no accumulation
of karmic (result of action) debt, since each days karma (action) is atoned for that day
itself by reciting the Gayatri mantra.
To those receiving Upanayam, Gayatri is like the milk from the four teats called
four Vedas of the udder of the Cow that is Godhead; it has in it the sustenance that will
make you shine with spiritual health. You must now carefully use it for your good; do
not spill it or spoil it; instead, boil it, make curds out of it, churn it and get the butter
that is immanent in it. It will become curds by means of your contemplation on the
Lord; with the churning rod of discipline, collect the butter of ananda (bliss).

1.3 When to recite the mantra?

Gayatri is a treasure you must guard throughout your lives.
Never give up the Gayatri; it is essential to recite the Gayatri mantra at least three
times during the morning at sunrise, at noon, and at sunset. These are called
"sandhya kalam" the time of coming together of night and day, of morning and
evening, and of day and night. The maximum benefit of chanting the mantra is said to
be obtained by chanting it 108 times. However, one may chant it for 3, 9, or 18 times
when pressed for time.
You do so many things. Why dont you chant this Gayatri?
Time, like man, has 3 qualities: sathwa, rajas, and thamas (poised or pure or
serenity, passion, and inertia). The day is divided into three parts:

4am to 8am and 4pm to 8pm have the sathwic (equanimous) quality;

8am to 4pm have the rajasic (passionate) quality;

8pm and 4am have the tamasic (inaction) quality.

The hours from 8pm to 4am are used mainly for sleep, while from 8am to 4pm are
employed by all beings, including animals and birds, in the discharge of their day to
day duties and are regarded as rajasic (active pursuit). It is during the sathwic period
(4am to 8am and 4pm to 8pm) that the Gayatri mantra should be recited. When the
sathwic hours of the morning are used for engaging oneself in good actions like
worship, virtuous deeds, and keeping good company, one is sure to raise oneself from
the human to the Divine level.
Besides these times, it makes sense to recite the Gayatri at least a few times a day.
Recite when you bathe, the body is being cleansed; let your mind and intellect also be
cleansed, and it is then also like offering ablutions to the Goddess. Recite it as well
before every meal (to sanctify the food and as an offering to the deity), when you
wake from sleep, and when you go to bed. The repetition of shanthi (peace), three
times, at the end of the mantra is considered to give peace to the three entities in you
body, mind, and soul.
Supplying the calories for the spirit is as necessary a process for happy living as
supplying calories for the body. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, morning worship, noon
worship, and evening worship all six are equally essential. You miss any one of the six
at your peril.

AUM/OM: Absolute reality. That which encompasses the three states
of waking, dreaming, deep sleep, represented by AUM, the three
levels of gross, subtle, causal, the three levels of conscious,
unconscious, subconscious, and the three universal processes of
coming, being, and going. Absolute silence beyond the three
levels is the silence after AUM.
Bhur:

Physical realm or plane; earth.

Embodiment of vital spiritual energy (prana)

Bhuva:

The subtle or astral plane.

The first nine words describe the glory of God, thereafter meditation dheemahi
on God, and then prayer to God Dhiyo Yo Naha Prachodayat. Hence the Gayatri is
unique in that it embodies the three concepts of stotra (singing the praise and glory of
God), dhyaana (meditation) and praarthana (prayer).
The prayer form of the Gayatri be used to pray to Lord Shiva is called Rudra Gayatri.
Similarly, one may sing Ganesha Gayatri for Lord Ganesha, Hanuman Gayatri for Lord
Hanuman, and Saraswati Gayatri for Goddess Saraswati.
1.5 References to the Gayatri Mantra in Scriptures
The Upanisads (secret texts) of Hinduism contain several references to the Gayatri
Mantra.
Chandogya Upanisad 3.12.1, 2, 5 (Qualities of Gayatri)

1. This entire creation is Gayatri. And the Gayatri is speech - for speech sings
(gayati) and protects (trayati) this entire creation. Gayatri indeed is all this,
whatever being exists. Speech indeed is Gayatri; for speech indeed sings and
removes fear of all this that exists.

2. That which is this Gayatri, even that is this earth; for on this earth are all the
beings established and they do not transcend it.

5. This well-known Gayatri is four-footed and sixfold.

Chandogya Upanisad 4.17.1-6 (Origin of Bhur Bhuvah Svah)

1. Prajapati (the progenitor of the worlds) brooded on the three worlds. From
them he extracted their essences; fire from the earth, air from the sky and the
sun from heaven.

2. He further brooded on these three deities. From them he extracted their

essences: the Riks (Rg-veda) from fire, the Yajus-mantras (Yajur-veda) from air,
and the Saman (Sama-veda) from the sun.

3. He brooded on the three Vedas. From them he extracted their existences;

Bhuh from the Riks, Bhuvah from the Yajus-mantras and Svah from the Samans.

4-6. Therefore if the sacrifice is rendered defective on account of the Riks (or
Yajus or Samans), then with the Mantra Bhuh Svaha (or 'Bhuvah Svaha' or
'Svah Svaha'), the Brahman priest should offer an oblation in the fire. Thus
verily, through the essence of the Riks (or Yajus or Samans), through the virility
of the Riks (or Yajus or Samans), he makes good the injury of the sacrifice in
respect of the Riks (or Yajus or Samans).

Brahadaranyaka Upanisad 5.14.4 (Gayatri as the Protector)

The Gayatri Mantra is based on truth. For truth is based on strength. Strength is
breath, and is based on breath. So, Gayatri protects (tra) the wealth (gaya) (the
breath!) of those who speak it with earnestness and devotion. When one recites
Gayatri on behalf of someone, it protects that person's breath too!
Brahadaranyaka Upanisad 5.14.5 (Four 'foots' of the Gayatri)
This verse talks about the unbounded wealth contained within the four 'foots' of the
Gayatri Mantra.

The first foot (aum bhur bhuvah svaha) is said to be equivalent to the wealth
contained in the three worlds put together.

The second foot (tat savitur varenyam) is said to be equivalent to the wealth
contained in the three main vedas.

If one were to receive a gift extending as far as there are living beings, that
would equal the third foot (bhargo devasaya dheemahi).

The fourth foot (dheeyo yo nah prachodyaat) is based on the glory of the sun,
whose power and wealth remains unequaled and unrivaled. Hence, there is no
amount of wealth that can equal the fourth foot of the Gayatri!

The "sarveshaam mantra" is one of the peace or shanti mantras which may be used to invoke harmony
and tranquility in the environment in which puja or prayers are performed. This shanti mantra may be
repeated three or eleven times, as time permits. The mantra may perhaps be used as a closing prayer for
the puja, to bless all those in attendance.
AUM sarveshaam svastir bhavatu, sarveshaam shaantir bhavatu

Summary of the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra

We worship Shiva - The Three-Eyed (tryambakam) Lord (yajamahe);
Who is fragrant (sugandhim) and nourishes (pushti) and grows (vardhanam) all beings.
As the ripened cucumber (urvarukamiva) is automatically liberated (bandhanaan) (by the intervention of the "farmer")
from its bondage to the creeper when it fully ripens;
May He liberate us (mokshiya) from death (mrityor), for the sake of immortality (maamritaat).
We pray to Lord Shiva whose eyes are the Sun, Moon and Fire
May He protect us from all disease, poverty and fear
And bless us with prosperity, longevity and good health.

Nama ivya is the most holy name of God iva, recorded at the very center of the Vedas and elaborated
in the aiva Agamas.
Na is the Lord's concealing grace, Ma is the world, i stands for iva, Va is His revealing grace, Ya is the
soul. The five elements, too, are embodied in this ancient formula for invocation. Na is earth, Ma is water, i
is fire, V is air, and Ya is ether, or ka. Many are its meanings.
Nama ivaya has such power, the mere intonation of these syllables reaps its own reward in salvaging the
soul from bondage of the treacherous instinctive mind and the steel bands of a perfected externalized
intellect. Nama ivya quells the instinct, cuts through the steel bands and turns this intellect within and on
itself, to face itself and see its ignorance. Sages declare that mantra is life, that mantra is action, that mantra
is love and that the repetition of mantra, japa, bursts forth wisdom from within.
The holy Natchintanai proclaims, "Nama ivya is in truth both gama and Veda. Namah ivya
represents all mantras and tantras. Nama ivaya is our souls, our bodies and possessions. Nama ivya
has become our sure protection."
Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami[citation needed]
The book The Ancient Power of Sanskrit Mantra and Ceremony, Volume I defines Om Namah Shivaya as:
"This mantra has no approximate translation. The sounds related directly to the principles which govern each
of the first six chakras on the spine...Earth, water, fire, air, earth. Notice that this does not refer to the chakras
themselves which have a different set of seed sounds, but rather the principles which govern those chakras
in their place. A very rough, non-literal translation could be something like, 'Om and salutations to that which I
am capable of becoming.' This mantra will start one out on the path of subtle development of spiritual
attainments. It is the beginning on the path of Siddha Yoga, or the Yoga of Perfection of the Divine Vehicle."
"Na" refers to the Gross Body (annamayakosa), "Ma" refers to the Pranic Body (pranamayakosa), "Shi" or
"Chi" refers to the Mental Body (manonmayakosa), "Va" refers to the Intellectual Body (vignanamayakosa)
and "Ya" refers to the Blissful Body (anandamayakosa) and "OM" or the "silence" beyond these syllables
refers to the Soul or Life within.

Goddess Parvati is the consort of Lord Shiva and is worshipped as Shakti. Puranic literature describes her as
having many forms, including Durga, Chandi, Kali and Uma. While Shiva symbolizes the efficient cause of
the creation, Shakti symbolizes the material cause.

This famous mantra, known as the Namaskara Mantra, comes from the Devi Mahatmyam, the epic tale of
Mahadevi, the Great Goddess. She has many names in the story - most famously Durga, but also Chandi,
Kali, Chamunda and others. This mantra is one of seven said to encapsulate the power of the entire 700
verses of this text, which is also known as the Durga Saptashati, or Seven Hundred Verses of Durga. It can
also be heard echoing through Kali temples and other temples of the Great Goddess throughout India. If you
repeat just one mantra in honor of Mahadevi, this is definitely a powerful choice.

Lord Maheshwara, O! Lord Vinayaka who is all the above and he who removes all impediments
(vignas), we worship your Divine Feet.

We meditate on Lord Ganesha - who is clad in white (representing purity), who is all pervading
(present everywhere), whose complexion is gray like that of ash (glowing with spiritual splendor),
who has four arms, who has bright countenance (depicting inner calm and happiness, smiling face)
and who can destroy all obstacles (in our spiritual and worldly path).

6. Agajaanana Sloka

Meaning
I worship day and night that elephant faced Lord Ganesha who is like sun to the lotus face of
Mother Parvati. Giver of many boons, the single tusked Ganesh, I salute Thee to give e a boon.
