echnically, what I do is called

Stippling though some
people know it as Pointillism. Its a form of art that
simulates varying degrees of shading in a drawing using small dots of
ink on paper to create the whole image (a picture made of dots).
I never took art at school, so I discovered the technique by accident
while I was still in my twenties when
I was doodling with a pen but never
thought much about it until I came
across a book by New Zealand artist
Rei Hamon and realized it was an actual art form. Sadly he has passed but
is still my inspiration for not just art in
general but Stippling as a true craft.
Although I did some pieces back
then, there was nothing I would say
that was of any significance or even
still have and 20 years passed until I
started drawing again in 2005. What
you see here then, is basically, my
body of work up to now.

I HOPE YOU CAN

ARTIST PROFILE

TATTOOD LIFESTYLE n FEB/MAR 2013 n 19

20 n TATTOOD LIFESTYLE n ISSUE 9

My name is Roberth Svensson,

Im 33 years old and Ive been working as a full time tattoo artist since 2008 at True Skin Tattoo (Sweden), together with
my master and colleague Kenneth Persson. I have always liked to draw and paint and I started up at a early age with my
interest for this. Now and then I try to go back where I started and do some realistic drawings, and not just do this new
school style every time I grip my pen, but I do love colours! I have never done a painting or drawing without music in my
ears, not even when I tattoo people, and its mostly black metal that inspires me to do these colourful pieces.

I wouldnt say that Im a social person outside the doors of True Skin Tattoo. I usually just go home and do my paintings,
but one needs to put that to rest sometimes, cause without my friends I wouldnt have come this far.

TL: Tell us about your shop and

where its located!
A: My shop kicks ass! It is Venom Ink Tattoo
in Sanford Maine. Its a full custom shop
with no flash on the walls. Instead the walls
are covered with paintings by ourselves
and other friends and tattoo artists. We
have paintings by myself, Chris Chubbuck,
Dan Kelley, Dan Hazelton, Brenne Freemantle, Adam Gordon, Matthew Brown, Brian
Soldano and a bunch of high quality prints
by various tattoo artists.
We have three tattooers, including myself,
and one great piercer, Brett Castner. Chris
Chubbuck is my right hand man and Dan
Kelley is my apprentice/up an coming tattooer. My wife Kelly runs the whole show,
handling everything on the business end of
the studio. We are a well oiled machine and
a great place to come for work.

TL: How did you get into tattooing and how long have you

been tattooing?
A:My Dad got me interested in tattooing.
He was always covered in work and I was
always intrigued by it. He even helped
foot the bill on my very first round of tattoo equipment and the opening of my
first studio. I started tattooing in 1995 and
opened my first studio in 1996. So about 16
years now Ive been working hard to make
a name for myself.

TL: Who/What inspires you?

A: My family! My girl and my two awesome
daughters. Other than that I am inspired
by every great tattooer out there. Also any
artist, digital or brush, that blows me away
with great artwork.

TL: Do you dabble in other styles

of artwork besides tattooing and
if so, what?
A: I mess with oil painting occasionally,
though I am pretty new to it and fumble

26 n TATTOOD LIFESTYLE n ISSUE 9

around blindly. I enjoy painting but only if Im

doing it for myself and I dont have to paint.
Otherwise it just ends up being work to me.

TL: Do you have a particular style

that you enjoy tattooing over
other styles?
A: I guess you could say realism is where I
dwell the most. I like doing a painterly and
saturated type of tattooing the most.

TL: What do you enjoy most

about tattooing?
A: The idea that every day I alter someones
life/appearance by putting my art on them.
At any point in the year someone is healing
a tattoo they allowed me to put on them.
Its really amazing when you think about it.
I really enjoy the end of a piece when you
and your client are sure you really nailed it.
Also, the fact that I go to work and draw on
people for a living on my own terms and
my own hours. Its the best job in the world.

TL: We know youve probably

been asked this 1,000 times, but
what is the worst tattoo youve
ever had to do?
A:Wow, I really dont know. There really isnt
a worst tattoo Ive ever had to do. Theres
difficult tattoos and things like that but
worst-not sure.

TL: If you had to change your profession, what would you change
it to:
A: Rich and unemployed. Yacht owner. Muscle car builder.

TL: Tell us anything about yourself and your work that we

havent already asked you!
A: I bust ass 6 days a week at this. If you
dont eat, sleep and breathe this profession
youll never get anywhere. A huge shout

out and thank you to Formula 51, Chris 51

and Joshua Southe for allowing me to be a
sponsored artist. They are a great company
and I love being a part of it. I have my own
signature color coming out soon through
them. Very excited for that. Check em out,
you wont be disappointed.
Also, myself and Rich Pineda are looking
forward to continuing our seminar The
Quickening. We held our first one last summer at the Live Free or Die convention in
New Hampshire and it went really well. Big
plans lined up for that!
Keep in touch with our website-www.venomink.com for convention info. Right now
all I have planned so far is Oregon Ink Show
in April and the Live Free or Die show this
summer.

Tell us little bit about yourself:

I am 34, from brazil, married , and i have 2 beautiful children. I have been
tattooing for over than 12 years and been drawing since I was very
young. Im a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
(Mormon). Some of my principles among others are to not make use of
smoke and alcohol.

What is your background?

I became technician of telecommunications and later went on to the
Army. When I got out of there I started Science of Computers courses
at the University Catolic of Santos. After that I quit on favor of my tattoo
passion. Today I am an art school student in Boston and eventually want
to do animation as well.

What is your favorite style?

I believe realism and color is what I do best, however I love to do traditional japanese and black & gray as well. Brazilians dont have very light
skin such as people from the north hemisphere, and as I like to work with
colors I had to develop a technique where I use lots of contrast working
deeper on the shadings and solid colors that make the color tattoo stand
out on even darker skin tones.
I consider myself as a versatile artist and feel comfortable doing pretty
much everything but with my personal touch and style.
Very often, customers come to see me to get tattoo covered up and I
believe I do those very well, however it is not my favorite thing to do. The
last Boston tattoo convention I won a best cover up award of the event,
which was awesome. I am aways trying to push myself to do works that
I like most.
I still like to see tattoos as art on skin and not as a competition.

What are yours influences?

When I was younger I used to play role playing games a lot, such as Dungeons & Dragons and Middle Earth. I have great admiration for the painters that illustrated those medieval fantasy art books. Like Clyde Caldwell,
Jeff Easley Frank Frazetta among others. During that time, way before I
start tattooing, was when I developed my artistic side for drawing.
Even though I didnt have many resources, I learned enough through a
drawing course that I watched on tv many years ago.
I also really like of the writer J.R.R.TOLKIEN, the descriptions in his books
make you feel deeply the scenario with a such richness of details that
feels like reality, however it is just an exercise for your imagination.
The same way is the creation of a design, you go get in the deep of your
imagination whatever you can create, then translate that into a form of
drawing on paper or skin. Tolkien did that in the form of words.

How is the tattoo industry in Brazil?

Its better than ever, very talent artists have started to appear more and
more, customers are willing to pay higher prices to get tattoos. Its trendy,
the media says that. Tattoos are the thing there.
Comparing with here I believe that the biggest difference is in the tattoo
supply companies. We dont have many and the ones that are there have
a kind of monopoly.
It is only allowed there to work with national products with exception
of a very few imports and the prices are ridiculously high. For example a
brazilian 1oz ink bottle cost us about 20 bucks and once you unseal the
bottle you have got to use it for no longer than 3 months and after that
you have to throw it away. Even worse they dont offer you bigger bottles
because they want to hold you to buying from them frequently.

How do you deal with the religion and the tattoo?

Its not easy at all. Feels like they are in opposite ways, especially in the
option of theirs and their followers. But not for me,I love tattoos I actually
dont see anything wrong tattooing and I had a great spiritual experience that shows me Jesus lives and wants me with him, no matter what
people think about it. To deal with that is part of the process.
Right now I am living in Boston, however, I go to Brazil frequently cause I
still own a couple of tattoo shops down there, where I attend to my old
respectful clientele and my brazilian friends.
I am working at The Painted Bird Tattoo in Medford Ma. The shop is just
crazy busy and we have a such nice ego free environment with a huge
brazilian community around the area.
I want to thank all the customers that in one way or another pushed me
to be here, my lovely family that supports me in whatever I do, and God
for showing me who I am, the purpose of my life and where I will go to.
