Pre-marital Sex: A Narrative Report

With the social patterns constantly changing over time, it is now difficult to find
out just what exactly is the right thing to do. What was right back then might be wrong
now or the other way around. Such was the case with premarital sex. Premarital sex by
definition, is a sexual activity practiced by unmarried people. This definition alone
implies that aside from being a social issue, premarital sex also poses as a social
problem. To better understand this idea, a causal loop was drawn revolving around
premarital sex.
On the first loop (1), premarital sex was linked to unwanted pregnancy, abortion
and morality. Biologically speaking, sex between a male and a female (both assumed in
healthy conditions) will result to giving birth to an offspringplanned or otherwise. With
premarital sex as the subject under discussion, this therefore will result to unwanted
pregnancy. In this context with the pregnancy being unwanted, it is thus convenient to
consider the possibility of abortion. Abortion, in effect will then have a moral impact to
the society. This is because abortion creates the idea that one can just simply get rid of
the responsibility of parenthood whenever they feel like it. Thus, this implies the decline
of the sense of morality among people in the society. This will then close the loop due to
the reason that this declined sense of morality will in itself, promote premarital sex.
Branching from the unwanted pregnancy in the first loop, another loop was then
drawn. Due to unwanted pregnancy, the person concerned will have to decide between
(but not limited to) abortion and forced marriageboth of which will link connections to

premarital sex. Analyzing Loop 2, unwanted pregnancy can lead to forced marriage if
both parties will consider the demand of society regarding this situation. We say 'forced'
because although they have both agreed to have sex, the pregnancy is not something
they have prepared for. And as the norms dictate, they have to seal now their shared
responsibility of raising a child by marriage, whether they like it or not. One can then
infer that this forced marriage will somehow affect the parenting of persons involved. On
the positive note, the parents having learned their lesson from their experience, will be
able to introduce to their child/children the importance of sex education being talked at
home. In this way, the child/children will be open to the idea of using birth control upon
engaging sex. Although it can be understood as being practical, one cannot rule out the
moral issue it poses. Yes, it does prevent pregnancy but at the expense of making sex
convenient, even for unmarried couples or casual partners. This again, will lead us back
to premarital sex.
Looking at its negative effect in parenting, unwanted pregnancy can lead to poor
family structure. By poor family structure we mean two things: (1) broken families and
(2) families but with negative family values. Either way, this will create an issue of
morality, as far as family in the truest sense of the word is concerned. Again, this
warped image of morality will draw us back to pre-marital sex.
Investigating the causes of premarital sex, we can analyze the third loop (3). This
shows that prostitution, pornography and sexual addiction have something to do with
premarital sex. This is because prostitution serves as a quick access to sexpremarital
sex in particular. If we are to trace back its causes, pornography can be seen as one. It
is because pornography is basically just the answer to the demand of what we attempt
to satisfysexual addiction.

The cycle continues because sexual addiction,

pornography and prostitution reinforces premarital sex. Another loop (4) from sexual
addiction can be made. This presents the idea that with sexual addiction, STDs will
become prevalent. And as a way counter this effect, contraception will again be
considered as a resort. Further, the use of this birth control method will again promote
premarital sex.
Lastly, looking at the effect of premarital sex in the society at large, we can
connect the links starting with the effect of premarital sex to the population growth, to
the unemployment rate which will in some way contribute to cases of prostitution (Loop
5). Certainly, with the sex now becoming convenient, this will cause an increase to the
population growth. Unemployment will then come to the picture. This is because of the
scarcity of resources (including jobs) that comes with increase in population. This
problem on unemployment will then cause some of the affected people in the society to
resort to prostitution. And again, this will point us back to premarital sex.
