According to many case studies, students percpective on
biotechnology varies depending on the amount of knowledge they have
about it. Some studie are: A study examined university students knowledge of and attitudes (n = 378) toward biotechnology in Slovakia, a conservative country where the distribution of genetically engineered products are banned by law. They found a significant positive correlation between attitudes and the level of knowledge; however, although students enrolled in biology courses have better knowledge of biotechnology, their attitudes toward genetic engineering were similar than those of students who do not study biology. Overall, Slovakian students have poor knowledge and numerous misunderstandings about what genetic engineering means, which suggests that science curriculum with respect to this topic should be greatly re evaluated and teaching strategies should be improved accordingly. ( International Journal of Science Education, University of Trnava , Slovakia) Another study is about an Australian biotechnology degree programme as a case study, 69 undergraduates from all three years of the programme were administered a questionnaire that asked them to rank the importance of 12 components of a biotechnology curriculum, including two science communication items. The results were compared to the responses of 274 students enrolled in other science programmes. Additional questions were provided to the second year biotechnology undergraduates and semi structured interviews were undertaken with 13 of these students to further examine their views of this area. The results of this study suggest that the biotechnology students surveyed do not value communication with non scientists nor science communication training. The implications of these findings for the reform of undergraduate biotechnology courses yet to integrate science communication training into their science curriculum are discussed.( International Journal of Science Education, Department of Education , Murdoch University , Murdoch, Australia) As for my perspective as a student about biotechnology, I am totally on the side of biotechnology since not only it helps our country to prosper but it also broadens our field of knowledge that may lead to greater discoveries, inventions and developments. But the main problem as to why many still oppose on the idea of biotechnology is because the understanding on the biotechnology process is still superficial and the attitudes toward shopping genetically modified products are therefore negative. This leads to the conclusion that programs on teaching about biotechnology should be implemented or teaching strategies should be improved to have a more informed and supportive public.
