Rafael Escamilla, PhD, PT, is a distinguished professor of


physical therapy at California State University, Sacramento
(CSUS). He is also the co-director of the CSUS Biomechanics
Laboratory, where he studies the science of the movement of the
human body in an attempt to better understand performance
enhancement and injury prevention. He teaches many courses in
the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program, such as
pathokinesiology, therapeutic exercise, and a certified strength
and conditioning certification course. The DPT program is part of
the College of Health and Human Services at CSUS.

Rafael Escamilla, PhD, PT, has been active in


athletics since his early teens. In high school, he
was a wrestler, football, and track and was the
awarded the most valuable player in football, the
most inspirational players in both wrestling and
track, won an award in boxing, and was chosen the
Outstanding Athlete at Clarkston high school. In
college, he was a conference champion in football
and track. After college, he became involved in
powerlifting. From 1993-1995, he won two National
Powerlifting Championships, and at 179 pound
bodyweight performed in competition a full squat of
just under 650 pounds, a deadlift of 630 pounds,
and a bench press of 400 pounds..
