WATER POLLUTION

Water Pollution
Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies
(e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater
). This form of environmental degradation occurs
when pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged
into water bodies without adequate treatment to
remove harmful compounds.

Water pollution affects the entire biosphere plants

and organisms living in these bodies of water. In
almost all cases the effect is damaging not only to
individual species and population, but also to the
natural biological communities.

Effects Of Water Pollution

Death of aquatic (water) animals
The main problem caused by water pollution is that it
kills life that depends on these water bodies. Dead
fish, crabs, birds and sea gulls, dolphins, and many
other animals often wind up on beaches, killed by
pollutants in their habitat (living environment).

Disruption of food-chains
Pollution disrupts the natural food chain as well.
Pollutants such as lead and cadmium are eaten by
tiny animals. Later, these animals are consumed by
fish and shellfish, and the food chain continues to be
disrupted at all higher levels.

Diseases
Eventually, humans are affected by this process
as well. People can get diseases such as
hepatitis by eating seafood that has been
poisoned. In many poor nations, there is always
outbreak of cholera and diseases as a result of
poor drinking water treatment from
contaminated waters.

Controlling Water Pollution

Although water pollution is quite bad,we should at
least try our best to do something to control water
pollution. The following are the steps we can do to
control water pollution:-

1)do not throw chemical substances, oil and medicines

into sinks.Instead,we should dispose off properly.

2)NEVER EVER throw rubbish or even chemical

substances into rivers or water treatment plants.

3)Use organic fertilizer.Or you can make it yourself

by decomposing vegetables left overs or animal
wastes.

4)The authorities should higher up summon fees

for polluting river and water reservoir areas.

5)Educate kids from small to always be ecofriendly.

6)Use non-toxic soaps,detergants and cleaning

products.

Purification Of Water
Water purification is the process of removing
undesirable chemicals, biological contaminants,
suspended solids and gases from contaminated
water. Most water is disinfected for human
consumption (drinking water.The methods used
include physical processes such as filtration,
sedimentation, and distillation; biological
processes such as slow sand filters or biolically
active carbon; chemical processes such as
flocculation and chlorination and the use of
electromagnetic radiation such as ultraviolet light.

Examples:Filtration

It separates solid particles such as clay, sand and

plants from the water but does not removedissolved
salts and chemicals from the water. It cant get rid of
microorganisms too.

Distillation

It does not contain any dissolved salt or

chemicals. It is also free from solid particles and micro
organisms.

Ways To Protect And Its

Quality
1.Dont use antibacterial soaps or cleaning products.
Most of these contain trichlosan, a registered pesticide
that has been found to harm aquatic life.Use of
antibacterial agents may lead to superbugs that will
be antibiotic resistant. Regular soap and water kills
germs just as effectively.

2. Dont put anything except water down storm drains.

These drains carry storm water to our local waterways.
Used motor oil, detergents, lawn fertilizers, pesticides,
and other contaminants get carried by stormwater to
local waterways and cause unnecessary harm.

3. Dont pave your property.

The more pavement there is, the more rain water
will simply run off down the storm drains, picking up
pollutants on the way and causing flooding. Allowing
water to soak into the ground can prevent flooding,
recharge groundwater supplies, and dilute
contaminants. Planting native plants that do not
require much water also helps save our precious
supplies.

4. Avoid using pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

They pose a serious threat to your health and safety
and they pollute both ground and surface water

5. Farm animals can also pollute water supplies.

Animals like cattle, sheep and goats are often left to
feed on grass in open fields bordered by streams or
rivers.

Ways Of Saving Water

1. Take shorter showers.
One way to cut down on water use is to turn off the
shower after soaping up, then turn it back on to rinse.
A four-minute shower uses approximately 20 to 40
gallons of water.

2.Watering plants
Watering plants early in the morning or late in the
evening reduces the loss of water in during
evaporation

3. Check your toilets for leaks

Put a little food coloring in your toilet tank. If, without
flushing, the color begins to appear in the bowl within
30 minutes, you have a leak that should be repaired
immediately. Most replacement parts are inexpensive
and easy to install.
4. Turn off the water after you wet your toothbrush .
There is no need to keep the water running while
brushing your teeth. Just wet your brush and fill a glass
for mouth rinsing.
5.Washing your car
Wash your car with a sponge and bucket rather than a
hose or pressure washer.
