the tensile adhesion strength of coatings
in accordance with ASTM D-4541.
Aluminum test dollies are adhered to
the surface and a perpendicular force
applied until the test poundage is reached
or the dolly detaches the coating. Results
shown in psi. Instrument supplied with
dollies, epoxy adhesive and magnet
clamp to hold the dollies in place on the
vertical during curing, all housed in a
durable plastic case. (Now available
with 2 dollies - now specified for many
concrete applications).

Helpful Hints - Adhesion Testing

Tensile adhesion pulls are evaluated in pounds per square inch (psi) and visually, as follows:
1. Adhesion failure - defined as a failure between two distinct paint layers or between
the substrate and the first layer of paint.
2. Cohesion failure - defined as a failure or break within one coat of paint (the coating
breaks within itself).
3. Glue failure - psi exceeds the glue strength, and may require re-gluing.

Depending on the specification, the user may or may not be required to score around the dolly prior to
pulling.

Shear adhesion strength of coatings is evaluated in accordance with ASTM D 3359 Adhesion by Tape
Test. Method A. describes the X cut method. Method B describes the parallel lines - Cross hatch
pattern method.

Adhesion can be subjectively evaluated using a knife and probing into the coating. This requires
considerable experience.
