2. GLOBAL TRADE - KEY FINDINGS


Indonesia dominates in the global margarine and shortening trade. In 2014,
Indonesia exported 807 thousand tonnes of margarine and shortening totaling
778 million USD, 30% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was
China, where it supplied 33% of its total margarine and shortening exports in
value terms, accounting for 73% of Chinas total imports.
Overall, the global margarine and shortening trade reached 6,180 million USD,
with a CAGR of 7% from 2007 to 2014. In physical terms, it increased from
3,250 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 4,116 thousand tonnes in 2014.
In 2014, France (8%), China (7%), Germany (7%), the Netherlands (5%) and
the United Kingdom (4%) were the leading destinations of margarine and
shortening imports, together making up 31% of global imports. The share of
the Netherlands increased (+2 percentage points), while the share of Chile
illustrated negative dynamics (-5 percentage points).
Belgium and the Netherlands were among the other main global suppliers of
margarine and shortening in 2014 with a combined share of 24% of global
exports. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were
Indonesia (+16% per year) and the Russian Federation (+12% per year).
Indonesia strengthened its position in the global export structure, from 7% in
2007 to 13% in 2014.
