Some people come into our lives, leave footprints

on our hearts, and we are never the same.
- FRANZ SCHUBERT
As a little boy, my grandson, Austin, attended Wichita State
University Child Development Center. As a toddler, he loved
and adored his teacher, a student aide. Each morning he
arrived at his classroom, Austin would peek in and ask,
Wheres Yumi? Is Yumi here? If the answer was yes, he
would smile and hurry in happily.

As a young man and Engineering major at WSU, Austin

chose to take Japanese as his language elective. The first
day of class, he walked in and the professor had a familiar
face. Her name was Yumi!
This young woman, who provided a toddler with much
affection and loving acceptance, shaped not only his young
life but his very future. Austin will be traveling to Japan
this summer to further study the Japanese language and
Japanese culture. He plans to live and work in Japan when
he graduates.
Never doubt that you, as a child care provider, leave
deep and lasting footprints on the hearts of the children
who come through your doors.

FAMILY FOCUS
Brainy Benefits of
Emotion, Affection, and Relationships

by Brett Schmidt, Child Care Aware of Kansas, Infant/Toddler Specialist

It is critical for children to know that they are surrounded by people that accept them, want to
assist them in being successful, and celebrate their accomplishments. The three pillars of love;
emotion, affection, and relationships - create a climate for both children and adults to learn.
By focusing on developing strong relationships with infants and toddlers, you can help them
develop the skills that will have lifelong benefits. Relationships take time and work to develop,
but the benefits are rewarding for all!

Being sensitive to childrens needs, shows them that they are
valued. Sensitivity will help them see how sympathy,
empathy, and proximity help in developing stronger
relationships. By being aware of an infants reactions, it
helps you create an understanding of different emotions
and in turn allows you to form an appropriate strategy
to soothe and support him/her.
Childrens exploration is important for their
discovery, learning, and problem solving skills.
Simply by being present and engaged, you will
assist their exploration, their excitement will
increase making their experiences even more
powerful.
Using loving language helps create
communication with children that builds their
brains and helps them learn. The benefits
begin even before infancy and will continue on.
Loving language is thoughtful, uses sensitive
words, and celebrates their successes.
Children need support to be successful! They
need you to show them how important they
are. Show them that you are there, whenever
they need help. Enjoy their successes, celebrate,
have fun and love them!
Do you know somebody interested in becoming a child care provider?
Have them call their local Child Care Resource & Referral Agency at 1-855-750-3343 for more information!

Welcoming a New Infant

weeks of bringing their new infant into
child care for the first time. Here are
some tips to help with this transition:

Communicate effectively
Understand attachment and
separation
Commit to ongoing professional
development
Build strong relationships
Respect individual differences
