China = the PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA

Taiwan's official name is REPUBLIC OF CHINA
OBOR = One Belt One Road = Silk Road Economic Belt + Maritime Silk Road
What?

Why?

1. Chinese economy is slowing down --- exports are down, demand is down
2. China needs to find NEW markets
3. Growing disparity b/w coastal China v/s Inland China = creating social proble
widening rich poor gap etc. Therefore, inland areas need to be developed.
4. Sorta like an olive branch to all the countries in East Asia which have been in
aggression in the South China Sea
5. To counter USA's PIVOT policy & USA's TRANS PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP (TPP) in
6. To set up base in Indian Ocean via Maldives, Lanka etc.
7. Straits of Malacca = vital choke point; more than 80% of China's trade passes
these are pirate infested --> China wants to secure these
8. China wants to promote its currency the RENMINBI as a global currency.

India?

Ambiguous stand. Lanka, Pakistan, Maldives are ALL IN. India's worried about S
theory.
+
China's got that CPEC thing going on with Pak which ends in Pak's GWADAR por
close to our own interests in Iran's CHABAHAR port.

Apart from that, we've got "PROJECT MAUSAM" and "SPICE ROUTE" projects (b
our glorious culture --> better understanding --> less disputes):

Project Mausam would allow India to re establish its ties with its ancient trade
Indian Ocean = east Africa, along the Arabian Peninsula, Iran to the major count
Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia.

A key aim of this project = nomination of maritime cultural landscape across th

transnational property on the UNESCO World Heritage List + To challenge Chin
the global Buddhist agenda:

India is aware of the Dalai Lama's mortality

India is also aware of the Sino-Tibetan debate over his reincarnation and the pu
Lama being propped up to rival the Dalai Lama's influence.
This is why the Indian Prime Minister has frequently highlighted the Indian orig
the India-China Buddhist links. (recent Buddhist conclave + promotion of Bodh
and what not)
+ We have a role in protecting Tibetan culture and the Indian PM's trip to Mong
this approach.

"By converting the Silk Road story into one that of trade, Beijing is ignoring the
flow of ideas through which Buddhism spread from India to China."
BCIM

Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar corridor. Good for us. Why?:

--> Reduce distance b/w Kolkata and Agartala via Bangladesh else we got to tak
CHICKEN NECK (350 kms v/s more than 1200 kms!)
--> Develop our NE region, thus will help in curbing separatism, extremism etc.
--> Bangladesh has RICH NATURAL GAS RESERVES
--> Promote tourism in S.E. Asia etc.

INSTC

From Iran's Chabahar port which we are developing, we've got another initiativ
INTERNATIONAL NORTH SOUTH TRANSPORT CORRIDOR or INSTC.
It's a ship, road and rail route for moving freight between Russia, Europe, Iran,
India has asked Uzbekistan to be a part of INSTC.

Way ahead JUST IMAGINE WHAT A GREAT ECONOMIC SUPERPOWER THIS REGION COULD
OF THESE INITIATIVES: OBOR, CPEC, BCIM, INSTC were JOINED TOGETHER!

If there were good relations b/w Ind, China, Pak, then we could've perhaps see
in our states of Punjab and Rajasthan, and an extension of our INSTC in Pak.
