KEEFERS KORNER
Alone With God
I might have shared recently my dismay about David Letterman retiring from
his late night television show. I was comforted in learning that he would be
replaced by Stephen Colbert who had hosted his own show on another cable
channel. I have enjoyed Colberts wit and political punditry and have longed for
his debut. Finally, last week his program began. Dotti and I have never been
able to stay awake too late, so when these programs come on at 10:30, Dotti is
already out and I only have a few minutes left until I am asleep as well. So, if I
watch any of the late night show, it is only for a few minutes.
So why am I sharing my viewing habits with you? On last Thursdays show,
Colbert had vice-president Joe Biden as a guest. That stimulated my interest
and I made the effort to stay up and watch the interview. Knowing Biden has
recently lost his son to cancer, I wondered if that might be addressed or if the
interview would focus more on politics (or since both Biden and Colbert are
rather clownish at times, would they just be horsing around!).
The interaction and discussion between the two men gave me a foundation for
this letter. Biden was asked how he was dealing with his sons loss. If you did
not know, many years ago Biden lost his first wife and a daughter in a serious car
accident and his two sons were critically injured. Now, he has recently buried
one of those sons. How are you getting through this? How are you dealing with
the loss? Colbert asked.
Biden replied that, in addition to a remarkable support network of friends and
family, it has been his faith that keeps him strong. He remarked that, as his son
lay dying he told his dad to focus and know that whatever was going to be, he
would be alright. Biden then commented that, in his worship attendance, he finds
himself alone with God even in the midst of a packed congregation. In spite of
all the people surrounding him, he is alone with God. That just blew me away.
I think of my preparations for worship, or for a wedding or funeral, or for
preparing a message like this one. I sit alone in the kitchen with soft instrumental
classical music in the background. I read our scriptures. I study commentaries. I
read other peoples papers and get their thoughts on the scripture. In essence
though, I am alone with God. Through prayer and study, I do my best to hear His
Word for our worship. I related to what Biden had said.
So my thoughts today are this when we are in worship together, I hope that
we can establish an environment in which we settle in to be alone with God.
Our fellowship together is a remarkable aspect of our Sundays. It is good to
catch up with friends we may not have seen for a week or so. But what I am
asking you, as well as reminding myself, is this in all of our congregational
worship, lets make every effort to focus all our thoughts away from the activities
and concerns of the week, and focus purely on God as we read His word, sing
His praises, and, I pray, hear His message for us in the words He gives me.
By the way, being alone with God is not merely to be practiced in Sunday
worship. It is a practice that can be employed every day of the week, when we
find ourselves with a little extra time for a refreshing sip of the cool water that
brings eternal life. The refreshing taste and aroma of Jesus Christ. May you be
blessed this week with the grace of Jesus Christ. May you find the time to be
alone with God. See you in church. Pastor Mark

Apostles Creed
The Chapel congregation will recite the Apostles Creed every first Sunday of the month
before communion. It is a meaningful statement of what we, as Christians, believe. It
would be good for all of us to memorize!
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and was
buried.
He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Chapels youth, grades 7-12, are collecting money for CROP, an agency that provides
food and resources to needy people all over the world. Also, join in the CROP Walk on
Sunday, October 4, at 2:00 pm at the Peace Church in Gladbrook. The Walk is for all
ages, and you will walk on the bike trail. A supper will be provided afterwards by the
Garwin UMC, but you may want to skip it so you can eat the Chuck Wagon meal at
Chapel at 4:00 pm! Please give your donation to any YF member or put a check made
out CROP in the offering plate by October 4. Thank you.

All-Church Bible Study
All adults are invited to a Bible Study group each Sunday from 6:00-7:00 pm at Ron &
Lois Groths home. They will be using the book, The Good and Beautiful God: Falling in
Love With The God Jesus Knows, by James Bryan Smith. This loving book will help us
discover the narratives that Jesus lived by to know the Lord that Jesus knew and to
practice spiritual exercises that will help us grown in the knowledge of our good and
beautiful God. Everyone is welcome!

given their required forms to her. The nominations committee has been working on their
slate of nominees and will present them at Charge Conference. Chapel officers and
chairmen of committees are especially encouraged to attend but everyone is welcome. If
you would like to carpool to Dysart, contact Stan & Sue Koster.

To All the Members of Chapel Church,
Thank you so much for hosting the green shower for Brent and me. It means so much to
us to have such a wonderful community behind us and supporting our marriage. We feel

Chapel Email
The Chapel Church email address (chapel@iastate.edu) is a great way to stay in touch
during the week with our Chapel family and friends. Many find this is a very handy way to
share exciting news, prayer requests or announcements about activities happening at
Chapel. If you would like to be added to the list, please let Linda Svendsen know at
lsvends@mail.iastate.edu. Please keep this email address for future references and
limit the number of forwards that are sent to this address because some people are
unable to open them. Thank you.

Pastor Appreciation Month
October is Pastor Appreciation Month. Thank you, Pastor Mark, for sharing Gods
love and your wisdom with us! This poem is for you:
Proud To Call You Our Pastor
A man who teaches the word of God,
the word of truth that gives the people power...
the power of love....the love of God!
A man who not only hugs the sheep,
But touches the heart of his flock.
The sheep know his voice and are blessed by his presence.
A man who teaches the medicinal benefits of laughter,
and the financial benefits of giving.
A man whose singing brings light into dark places
and pierces the heart into conviction.
A man whose smile actually means "I love you;
A man whose eyes say "I'm praying for you;
A man whose lessons from the pulpit make you jump up
and say, I can take on the world, bring it on!
A man who everyone has heard of, most people know,
who many people want, but we have him
because he chose to be our shepherd...
A man we appreciate and love, and who we are proud to call "Our Pastor!

Promotion Sunday
Promotion Sunday was held August 30. Jr SS superintendent Heidi Langenbau
introduced the children, who then played Jesus Loves Me with their bells. Thank
you, Marla Hlas, for being their director. Last years teachers and helpers received
plastic cups filled with treats and a message about TEACHERS: insTruct, Encourage,
prAise, influenCe, sHare, guidE and inspiRe. Thank you, Heidi, and all those who
help with Jr. SS during the year. Matt and Ann Jackson came up front to present first
grader, Violet Jackson, with a Bible. Afterwards, the Fellowship Hall was full as we
enjoyed rolls and drink. Thank you to the Volunteers for serving the lunch.
Elementary students are encouraged to put stickers on an attendance chart
when they come to opening exercises at 9:30 am each Sunday. They may also put
stickers on if they go to a different Sunday School. On their birthdays, they may bring
pennies to match their age to put in the cake and then choose updated birthday
prizes. We hope many of our children will make it a weekly habit to head to Chapel
as well as bring a friend. A big thank you to Heidi Langenbau for her leadership, to all
of our Sunday School teachers, and to Chapel for your wonderful support of our
Sunday School activities.

Fill Some Shoeboxes!
Chapel is invited to participate in Operation Christmas Child (www.samaritanspurse.org) again this year. You may take
as many of the flattened 10 x 6 shoe boxes as you like, fill them with supplies, and return them to the narthex by Sunday,
November 8. Please take labels that indicate if the box is for a boy or girl and ages 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14. You may view the DVD that
is enclosed in the green folder. Gift ideas include (in next paragraph are alternative ideas from a woman overseas): School
pens, pencils, sharpener, crayons or markers, stamps & ink pad sets, writing pads or paper, solar calculators, coloring & picture
books; Toys small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, small Etch a Sketch, toys that
light up or make noise (with extra batteries), Slinky; Hygiene Items toothbrush, toothpaste, mild bar soap (in a plastic bag),
comb, washcloth; Other hard candy & lollipops (double bag all candy), mints, gum, T-shirts, socks, ball camps, sunglasses, hair
clips, toy jewelry, watches, flashlights (with extra batteries). Do NOT include war-related items such as toy guns, knives or military
figures; chocolate or food; liquids or lotions like hand sanitizers; breakable items; or aerosol cans. In a separate envelope, you
may write a note to the child and include a picture of yourself or your family. If you include your name & address, the child may
write back. Place a rubber band around each closed shoe box. OTHER GIFT IDEAS WRITTEN BY A FEMALE WHO LIVES IN
SENEGAL:
Soccer ball - Get the best quality mini soccer ball that you can fit into the box when it is inflated (or send a deflated ball with a
pump) and you can basically forget about anything else!
Brand new nice short-sleeved shirts (with no writing on them) for boys and girls.
Small flashlight with batteries (Most families dont have electricity so a working flashlight is gold!)
Good quality melamine plate, bowl, and/or cup (Practical and also special.)
Soap and a plastic soap dish that has a cover. When you bathe standing on a big rock in the dirt as kids do here, you really
need the soap holder. And families never have enough soap.
Toothbrush in a toothbrush holder. Again, the plastic case for the toothbrush is really great when you dont have a sink/counter/
tiled bathroom but rather brush your teeth outside squatting over dirt and need to keep it in your room.
Pencils, erasers, colored pencils, and sharpeners for all school-aged kids. And good quality pens for kids aged 10-14, in black,
red, green, and blue. All of these are required for school and the ones from America last so much longer than the cheap ones
available here.
Jump ropes, Band-Aids, hard candy & gum, comb, hair elastics or head bands for girls, marbles, harmonica, simple watch,
sunglasses & solar calculator for older kids, socks
For the youngest girls, a baby doll with light brown skin and no hair (good for a child of any color)
Toy car, truck or airplane for the youngest boys (Bigger wheels; Matchbox wheels dont work well in dirt.)
DO NOT BUY:
Anything with instructions in English, even if it seems simple to you.
Any toy that is not universally recognizable.
Yo-yos (They dont know what it is here.)
Gloves, winter hats (You dont know whether your box will end up in Siberia or Senegal.)
Play-dough (Kids here have no idea what it is for.)
Stuffed animals (Little ones are afraid of them.)
Stickers or temporary tattoos
T-shirts with words or pictures on them
Anything cheap or fragile
Approach filling a shoebox like you would approach picking out a gift for a friends child, not as an opportunity to unload stuff
you dont want.
If possible, please donate $7 per box to cover shipping & other project costs, or its possible a church organization may want to
donate the shipping costs, or some generous person may write one check for all the boxes! Contact coordinator Marilyn Willits,
641-486-2244 from Evangelical Free Church, Marshalltown, if you have questions. The boxes, which are in the narthex, need to
be returned by November 9-13 to E Free Church so please return them to the narthex table by Sunday, November 8. Over 8.5
million boxes will be given out to needy children all over the world. We hope Chapel is successful in filling all of our boxes!

Administrative Council
September 13, 2015
Members Present: Vaugn and Carolyn Kloster, Bill Backoff, Bill Ormston, Ann Jackson, Pastor Mark, Stan & Sue Koster, Chuck Rosacker,
Heidi Langenbau, Linda Havelka and Amy Niedermann.
Pastor Mark opened the meeting with a prayer.
In the absence of Chair, Lori Somers, Stan Koster called the Administrative Council meeting to order on Sunday, September 13, 2015 at
12:10. Sue Koster and Amy Niedermann provided the delicious lunch. Bill Backoff made the motion to approve the minutes of the last
Administrative Council meeting as printed in the Chapel Chimes. The motion was seconded by Ann Jackson and motion passed.
Treasurers Report: Vaugn Kloster- A print out of the treasurers report was distributed to the council. The balance on hand as of August
31, 2015, was $21,754.03 with $12,000.00 put into a designated canopy reserve fund, and $185.38 removed for the noisy offerings, which
leaves a balance of $9,568.65. Motion was made by Heidi Langenbau to accept the report and seconded by Bill Ormston. Motion passed.
It was approved that Vaugn Kloster, treasurer, would disperse the Ice Cream Social money of $1145.67 to each of these three groups: LCA,
YF and the Church budget. Motion to disperse these funds was made by Sue Koster, seconded by Linda Havelka. Motion carried. After
dispersing the ICS funds, this leaves a balance of $7277.31. (See Mission report below for further detail.)
Pastoral Report: Mark Keefer- Pastor Mark mentioned that after confirmation class, he drove home feeling comfortable. There are 11
kids attending confirmation class this year. Pastor Mark recommended moving the order of the worship service so that offertory will be
done during the hymn right after special music. Pastor Mark mentioned that in the next two weeks he has two weddings in Garwin and a
th
baptism at Chapel on October 4 . Stan Koster asked if we could recite the Apostles' Creed a couple times a year, and Pastor Mark said
that it was a good idea as it keeps us tied to who we are.
Trustees Report: Stan Koster Leon Lamer provided a drawing for the proposed canopy. Hay Construction will install the canopy when
they have an opportunity to do so. Stan asked Vaugn Kloster to set aside $12,000.00 in reserve for the canopy. It was also mentioned that
when Hay is doing the canopy that they were going to see if they could replace the glass doors on the southeast and northwest sides as
they leak when it rains and they are not efficient. Stan is going to look into a blind for the window by the piano. Schendels Pest Control has
been spraying and setting traps for mice. If you see or smell any signs of them, please notify a trustee. Discussion was held about cleaning
a room in the basement nursery so that there will be four rooms to have non-church organization meetings and have all four youth groups
adhere to meeting in the basement. Ann Jackson mentioned that we should have a list of rules for all to follow and have the team leader
sign, acknowledging the rules. Stan and Sue Koster will work on the rules. Once rules have been established, Ann Jackson will talk to Kim
Cox and make sure her Boy Scout group is aware of the new rules. If there is a need to use the Fellowship Hall, they will need to contact
th
Amy Niedermann to have this authorized. The Volunteers group will meet on September 17 and discuss fixing up the nursery upstairs. If
the Volunteers decide not to do this project then the trustees will. There have been issues with the circuit breaker going off for the lights in
the sanctuary; Stan thinks he has it fixed. He also fixed a bad cable in one of the microphones. We now have two new lights in the
overflow, donated by an anonymous donor in memory of Richard and Donald Burt.
PPR: Darrel Burt- A PPR meeting needs to be arranged so they could get the Charge Conference forms completed before harvest starts.
th
Charge Conference has been moved from Traer to Dysart, October 27 at 6:30 pm.
YF: Marla Hlas- N/A.
Sunday School Superintendent: Vaugn Kloster- The members that are listed for Sunday School Superintendent are Randy Beichley,
Lynn Handorf, Vaugn Kloster and alternate Mike Vint. The M&M class is enjoying "The Story" which has 31 lessons.
Sunday School: Heidi Langenbau- Ann Jackson and Heidi Langenbau cleaned out the closets and labeled everything, and these are in
the NE room of the church. Tina Mann spoke with Heidi about getting books for Jr/Sr class so they have something to follow instead of
winging it. There seems already to be books in the YF room that at least one teacher is using. It was suggested that the teachers meet to
discuss the material. Sunday School has diminished in number so it was brought up to put Sunday School on hold for the summer of 2016.
If this does not work we can always reverse it. Bill Backoff moved, Ann Jackson, seconded and after much discussion, the motion passed.
There will be no Jr formal Sunday School, ages 3-grade 12 the Sunday of Memorial Day (May 29) through Labor Day Sunday (Sept 5). We
need to welcome any Jr Sunday School youth who do come during the summer and make sure they know where to go. There is easy-touse material in the NE classroom if someone wants to lead or they can join another class. Everyone needs to be on the lookout and
th
welcome children who come during the summer! Promotion Sunday will be on September 11 , 2016 and we decided that it would be a
great way to kickoff Sunday School with some kind of celebration rally, such as a pizza party. Stan mentioned that we need to make sure
that we listen to our young adults. Life Application Sunday School class has not had a good turn out but will give it some more time and
decide later on what to do.
Childrens Church: Ann Jackson- Children's Church is going with a Lego theme. As of right now they have four kids who had so much fun
they are going to tell their friends. They had a lot of fun building Lego crosses.
Sunday School Treasurer: Rick Bessman- Sunday School income for the quarter was $207.43. Sunday School expenses were $788.39.
The Sunday School income for the year was $683.73. Sunday School expenses for the year was $1406.30. The ending balance for
Sunday School was $2,063.40. Motion was made by Heidi Langenbau to accept the report, seconded by Bill Ormston, and it passed.
Lay Leader: Allen Burt- N/A.

th
Witness Ministries: Kathryn Burt- Her committee has samples for materials for Advent, which will start November 29 . They will evaluate
and recommend a study book.
Missions Committee: Linda Havelka- The church mission at Wolfe Ranch only required a few people. They repaired some fences, a gate
and did some mowing. The committee designated $3300 to various mission groups with an additional $700 set aside for emergency issues
in the community, such as fires, tornado, etc. These funds will be paid soon, leaving a balance of the undesignated general balance of
$3977.31. The Transformers went to Belize in July.
Age-Level Committee: Marla Hlas- Information was given by Sue Koster that the Volunteers will be sponsoring "Chapel's Christian
th
Cowboy Chuck Wagon Celebration" in our Fellowship Hall on Sunday, October 4 at 4 pm. Age-Level will be helping. We are hoping for a
100% turnout from all Chapel people, their friends, and all ages.
Nurturing Committee: Bill Backoff- Bill created a print-out for Graduation Sunday, Memorial Day Service and a list of Deceased Veterans.
Bill gave the forms to Sue Koster and Amy Niedermann for future reference. Thank you, Bill.
Old Business: Heidi Langenbau mentioned that they purchased too much coffee, cups and lemonade and do not have an issue using it in
the kitchen all year round. No money exchange is needed. Stan Koster mentioned that the wooden freezers were recently put in the shed.
He will check with Ron Groth to see if there is still a need for the prayer room as they have been meeting in the nursery at 8:30 am. Sue
Koster and Amy Niedermann will be encouraging those who have forms to turn in for Charge Conference as time is getting closer. We need
to give Amy Niedermann plenty of time to process the information.
New Business: Pastor Mark brought up the suggestion of new hymnals. There is information about Apostles Creed in the back of the
hymnals, kids could bring to confirmation class, and there are programs in the front for baptism, new membership, new songs which the
praise team might enjoy. He thought the cost of the hymnals were around $9 to $10 dollars a hymnal. Noisy offering will be every third
Sunday of the month. Before Noisy Offering Sunday, Amy Niedermann will start the weekly email in all capital letters to remind people to
bring their spare change. If people forget, they can also put in bills. Sue Koster moved to use the noisy offering money for missions. Bill
Backoff seconded the motion and motion carried. Mention was made of getting a Sam's card for Chapel as that is where we buy our bulk
supplies. There should be no need for people to pay for supplies and then get reimbursed later. Options will be investigated.
Pastor Mark led us in a closing prayer. The next meeting will be Sunday, November 15, 2015, with Nancy Peshel and Kathryn Burt providing
the meal. The meeting was adjourned at 1:55 pm.

The Chapel Ladies Cemetery Aid met for lunch Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at Ocean City Chinese Restaurant.
We gathered at Iowa River Hospice House at 1:30 pm for a guided tour of the facility. Jo Gilmore led us through the building and showed us
the many different areas. We stopped at the conference room where Jo told us of the history of hospice and the history of Iowa River
Hospice. She answered our many questions along with Angie Bessman who stopped by to say hello to us.
President Connie Appelgate opened the business meeting. Seven members answered roll call. The minutes of our July meeting were read
and approved. Correspondence was read from Janice Hoing. The treasurers report of $2540.11 in checking was presented and placed on
file. There were no bills presented.
Old Business:
Vivian LeVier has all the plot numbers and names in a database.
Smiths would be glad to trim the bushes and peonies, but are very busy with mowing since we have had a lot of rain.
We need to identify the gravestones that need repair. We will meet at the cemetery on Monday, September 28 at 1 pm to take photos of
those that need repair. We will then determine whom to contact.
New Business: None
Committee Reports: Flags: Center flag was flown for Earl Hoings graveside service on September 4. The next occasion will be Patriot
Day, September 11.
Cards: Six cards have been sent. Phyllis Mann expressed thanks for the cards sent to Donald in the last several weeks.

UMW
The Chapel UMW met on Thursday September 3, 2015 at 7 pm in the church fellowship hall. Cindy Krull introduced our shepherdess,
Linda Frazer, who presented a program on racial justice. In 2019, the UMW will celebrate 150 years as a mission organization serving
women, children, and youth around the world. Racial justice is an issue that was part of the UMW heritage and is still relevant today.
Linda helped us to see racial justice implications of the media that we use and experience here in the United Sates. Her example was
two pictures taken of the same activity when Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005. One showed a black man walking through chest high
water carrying a black garbage bag. The medias description read he had been looting a grocery store. The other photo showed two
non-black residents also walking through chest high water carrying bags. The medias description read they had found bread and soda
at a local grocery store. Her program was enlightening about this important topic.
Susan Beichley opened the business meeting. Thirteen members and one guest answered roll call by telling of one new thing they
learned this year. The minutes of our June meeting were read and approved. Correspondence was read from the Shouse family and
from House of Compassion. The treasurers report of $439.18 in checking and $1003.61 in savings was presented and placed on file.
There were no bills presented.
Marcia Wiese presented a Spiritual Growth report, reading todays entry in Jesus Calling. There have been six cards sent.
There was discussion on a project for this month. Claire Handorf made the motion, seconded by Cindy Ormston, that we purchase $50
worth of items for each of these preschools: Crayon Corner in Gladbrook, and the GMG Preschool in Green Mountain. Motion carried.
Karen Handorf will check at Crayon Corner and Connie Buchman will check at GMG.
The nominating committee presented their report. The people holding the positions of president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and
the three mission areas agreed to continue serving. Lois Groth will join the Membership, Nurture and Outreach committee with Shirley
Svendsen. Sue Koster nominated Kathryn Burt for the nominating committee. Claire Handorf seconded the nomination. Cindy Ormston
made the motion, seconded by Karen Handorf, to cast a unanimous ballot. Motion carried.
Karen Handorf reported on sites for our September trip. Our choices are: Iowa Falls, Colo-Boone, Fort Dodge, Winterset, and Des
Moines. After much discussion, we are going to Iowa Falls Saturday, October 3. We will have lunch, take a boat ride on the Iowa River,
and do some shopping.
Susan Beichley reviewed up coming dates: September 18 is the District meeting in Osage, October 10 is the Conference meeting in
Council Bluffs, and October 16-18 is Mission U at MCC in Marshalltown.
Janice Collins sent verbal thanks for all the thoughts and prayers after her surgery.
Susan read our scripture reading for September. Prayer requests were expressed. Susan closed with prayer.
Sue Koster and Karen Collins served a delicious dessert on tables decorated in a book theme.
Respectfully submitted,
Carolyn Kloster, secretary
