Gonorrhea by Acupuncture plus Drugs: A Case of

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted diseases
caused by bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The
bacteria can be passed from one person to another
through sexual intercourse, and one can also catch
gonorrhea from the infected clothing, bed-sheet and
quilt cover. It often can be treated with antibiotics in
modern medicine and drugs of clearing away heat
and toxic material in Chinese medicine. The authors
adopted acupuncture and moxibustion combined
with oral administration of western medicine
Ciprofloxacin and Chinese herbs Longdan Xiegan
Wan (Pill of Gentiana for purging the liver fire) to
cure a case of gonorrhea, now it is reported as
follows.
Medical History
A male patient of 38 years old, driver, first visited
on December 26 of 1999, he complained of redness,
swelling and itching at the tip of the penis and felt
a burning and stabbing sensation around the
urethra for 5 days, accompanied with frequent and
painful urination. When the glans penis is squeezed,
the ropy and purulent discharge may ooze out of
the urethra, the smear cytologic examination
showed white cells in the discharge, the bacterial
culture showed Neisseria gonorrhoeae was positive.
The above symptoms occurred 1 day after he had
sexual contact with an infected person one year ago,
and was cured after receiving treatment of
Ceftriaxone Sodium for 15 days. Now he got infected
again, as his business has been bad and can not
afford to the fee for the Western medicine
treatment, sought the treatment of acupuncture and
moxibustion.
Therapeutic Methods
(BL 67) were selected and pricked with three-edged
needle to cause bleeding of 15 drips, then the
filiform needles of 40 mm long were rapidly inserted
into the acupoints Guanyuan (CV 4), Zhongji (CV
3), Huiyin (CV 1), bilateral Ligou (LR 5), and
bilateral Sanyinjiao (SP 6), 0.5 cun deep
respectively, and manipulated continuously for 3
min and retained for 15 min. In the meantime, the
patient was asked to take oral Ciprofloxacin (2
tablets each time, and 2 times a day) and Longdan
Xiegan Wan (a pack each time, and 3 times a day)
for 10 days, he was also asked to perform
moxibustion with moxa-stick on acupoints
Guanyuan (CV 4), Zusanli (ST 36) and bilateral
Sanyinjiao (SP 6) for 10 min in his own home. After
3 days of treatment, the symptoms were improved
obviously, and after 12 days of treatment, all

symptoms disappeared completely, and he returned

to normal work.
Experience
Gonorrhea, called syphilis in TCM, can be
successfully cured with antibiotics if the patients
seek timely treatment, but they can become infected
again If they don't have a mutually monogamous,
steady, or lifelong sex partner. It's better to prevent
gonorrhea than to treat it, and the surest way to
completely prevent the infection is to abstain from
all types of sexual intercourse. Acupuncture and
moxibustion can improve the body resistance so as
to achieve anti-infammation, and speed up cure of
gonorrhea together with the Chinese and western
drugs.
