Accuracy Assessment to Evaluate a Classified Image

"Accuracy assessment allows you to evaluate a classified image file (thematic raster layer). The
CellArray for this utility lists two sets of class values for the randomly selected points (random points) in
the classified .img file. One set of class values is automatically assigned to these random points as they
are selected, and the other set of class values (reference values) is input by you. These reference values
should be based on ground truth data, previously tested maps, aerial photos, or other data. The
Accuracy Assessment CellArray is an organized way of comparing your classification with ground truth
data, previously tested maps, aerial photos, or other data."

Here is a brief description of the steps required:

Following the classification process, you need to create an ASCII file containing X, Y coordinates of
check points for which you wish to assess the accuracy and a reference value for each of these points.
The reference value for each check point should be the same value as the class value for that type of
ground truth. This reference value can be manually entered into the cell array at a later stage if not
included in the ASCII.
From the main Classifier menu, select Accuracy Assessment.

First, open the appropriate classified image file

(File, Open).
The ASCII file can then be imported but before doing so the columns that data will be imported into need
to be highlighted. These are the X,Y and Reference columns. The ASCII file can be imported using
'Import User-defined Points' from the Edit pull-down menu.

The import options will allow you to assign a format that matches the text file. The Input Preview tab
allows you to check that your input file is being imported properly.
The imported points will be listed in a cell array.

If the reference points were not entered when importing from the ASCII file, the reference value for each
point needs to be entered manually.
The class column also needs to be populated. To do this, link the cell array to a viewer (View, Select
viewer)

Then using Edit, Show Class Values the cells in this column will be populated with the class values
from the classified image.

Once the cell array is completely populated, the accuracy statistics can be generated. Various options can
be chosen.
