Aims
Target audience
Diabetes and hypertension are growing epidemics in the most of the African
continent that are rapidly adopting western lifestyles. The EXCEMED
Excellence in Medical Education, has an ongoing, long-term educational
project to provide additional focused training workshops for health care
professionals in the host countries. EXCEMED hopes that by prioritising
diabetes and hypertension it will be possible to increase understanding and
the awareness of the opportunities for preventing these conditions.
The CME tour will provide a mixture of taught and interactive sessions. The
taught lectures will be presented by a speaker supported by slides, but will
include ample opportunity for students to ask questions.
The interactive sessions will centre on discussions of individual cases, and
each will be presented by a participant with a faculty member who will discuss
the case interactively with the participants by eliciting the ideas on differential
diagnosis, investigations and management strategies. Sessions will be taught
not only by the visiting faculty but also by teaching staff from the host
universities.
Participants will have the opportunity during this live educational course to
reflect on the factual knowledge that has been provided and will be able to
deepen and extend their knowledge through direct contact with the faculty.
Learning objectives
By attending the CME tour, participants will be able to:
Describe the developing epidemic of obesity, hypertension and diabetes and
their sequelae
Interpret the nature, aetiology, diagnosis and cardiovascular complications
and treatment of (i) hypertension and (ii) diabetes.
Identify the specific chronic complications of diabetes that will contribute to
its major health burden
Differentiate acute metabolic presentations of diabetes and their inpatient
treatment
